I align my left hand so that my knuckles are parallel to the neck and my 1st finger usually reaches A on the G string, and when the G string resonates I know my hand is right where I need it to be, depending on the key of the piece or scale I am playing. Aligning my knuckles this way also helps my intonation when shifting from 1st to 3rd position.

Thanks Joy. This was very helpful. I noticed that you seem to actually shift your whole hand from "half position" to first position with B natural on the A string

Thank you so much Joy for such informative videos! I have a question :Like how do you play natural harmonics(like A harmonic on A string or D harmonic on D string) like suppose I can play an A harmonic on A string with fourth finger like then I can't move back to G note with the fourth finger as well like i don't get the best transition from A harmonic with fourth finger to G note with fourth finger as well. Could you make a video on it? Thank you so much!

You're most welcome Sarthak! I'll try to make a video about it. Meanwhile here is a video I made about minor scales. Happy violin playing! ua-cam.com/video/peipEP8QZsQ/v-deo.html

PS, i love your channel! and i agree that yours appears to be the best on on youtube. (I get value from others as well but yours are across the board on a higher level. Topics are always relevant to me, or will be as i get a bit better) i also found fiddlerman to be very helpful. But my “how-to violin 🎻 “ playlist is becoming overtaken with your vids lol. 😃😁
Have u covered fitting a chinrest appropriately? Like if u have a long vs short neck, and how the chinrest is supposed to cup your jawline (recently found this out tho i’ve not yet seen any videos talk about that!! I only heard about it this week!) also center vs side for chinrests, how to tell what might be better for a person’s unique face. How to tell.
And more vids like this one please! Hoping it will be a series.
Do u do lessons through skype or online? Or just in person?

Is the spacing between the b flat and the b ( semitones) in first position similar to a tone in 3rd position in terms of length? And it’s there a small gap between the b and the c in first position? Thanks

Hi Mr Sheep, The distance between fingers become smaller as you go to higher positions. Therefore the distance between the note B and Bb in the first position would be greater than the distance between the note B and the note Bb in the 3rd position, even though they are both semitones. And for the note B and the note C in the first position, both fingers are placed pretty close. For players with thick fingers ,like me, have to put both fingers tightly together whereas players with skinny fingers might have a bit of room between the two fingers. I hope these answered your questions. Happy violin playing!
