Using one of these older Dell's to build a gaming PC might surprise you. You can check out the entire build process where I turn one of this into a gaming PC that beats out a console for the same money. Also, I've made an updated video talking about the current prices. Check it out for some alternatives to an xx20 with an i5, since they're selling for absurd prices currently, as of (Aug. 2020).

I so excited for this upcoming video.i have optiplex 9020 i7 pc.thanks in advance.
I’ve been wondering do I need a monitor with a VGA cable to use this pc
@@wilsonbatuyong1147 Well, the next video is up about removing the HDD cage to install a bigger graphics card and I'm filming the next video on installing a front fan for better airflow.
@@Ivory805 If you're not going to add a dedicated graphics card you will need a VGA or DisplayPort cable. There are adapters that will go from VGA to DVI or DisplayPort to HDMI, which would be my recommendation. If you're going to add a dedicated GPU, most have HDMI and DisplayPorts. Lower end cards still have DVI. However, I'm not seeing any that have VGA on them anymore.
Great timing finding this video. I’m going to pick up a couple 9020s tomorrow! 👍
Excellent video, only 3 minutes in and you've provided more and better information than most other videos on this exact topic. Good Work!
Thanks! I really appreciate that and I'm glad you found it useful.

@@frankimaserati1395 me too!!!
Definitely
Totally agree, thank you.
After two years and price jumps, this video and screw it, this whole channel is still extremely useful on this topic, mainly with the hardware itself since prices have changed, but also what prices to look out for. It even helped me to understand that older generations aren't worth it. Thanks a lot, earned a new subscriber.
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful.
Subscribed! Every question and concern I've had about these affordable computers was addressed in this one video, and that is something that dozens of others here on youtube don't even attempt to do! I am beyond impressed by the amount of incredibly useful information included in this video. This no nonsense, practical and intelligent approach to modern computing is exactly what i've been looking for. Thank you so much for sharing this valuable knowledge with us and please keep up the excellent work! I appreciate the effort you're putting into these videos far more than i'm able to express in this comment. BRAVO!
Thanks, I really appreciate that. That's exactly what I started making these videos. Seemed to be so much misinformation, and left out information.
Niq here. Pretty detailed and in depth. As a budget conscious guy, I love these kinds of videos. Keep em coming!
Hey man! Thanks! I should have the build video put together in the next few weeks.
ayy we have the same name lmao
I’m a new subscriber. I just saw the title of the video, and I knew I had to watch. I haven’t purchased a PC in over 15 years. I just purchased a Dell Optiplex 780 minus of the power cord and the HDD for $20. I added an old legal copy of Windows 7 Pro, a 240gb SDD, added 8 more gd of DDRAM up from 4gb to a total of 12gb and now I’m upgrading the current dual CPU to 2 Quad Q9650 3.0 Intel Core GHz 12M 1333MHz 4-Core Processor for $23. The MOBO also have four slots for ram. It surprisingly has a fast boot up speed. I due plan to build a really sweet rig but this old Dell is just for fun and for general surfing and school even though I have a few laptops. This is my learning PC because I’m study for a COMPTIA A+ cert and other skill sets. I also upgraded my video card to a none exciting 2gb Radeon RX550 too. Overall I’m happy but I realize this is not a gaming rig but it can do emulation of course. Once I workout a few bugs this old Dell will be gtg and even better!
How many watts does your power supply carry?
Too long before upgrades, you missed out alot (properly used English contraction).
I have been doing Dell Refurbs for a while now and I have done 5 now and this video is the most comprehensive I have seen....good job!! Thanks
Thanks! I really appreciate the positive feedback.
I’ve watched almost all of your videos on the Optiplexes multiple times, and they gave me the confidence to make my own budget gaming build. Thank you very much for the hard work you put into your videos!
Glad I could help! And there are more on the way.
So glad I found this video.
I got a 7020, want to upgrade it but am so lost about everything.
This was a nice, calm and thorough video that really helps me feel more confident about messing with the insides.
I'm happy that you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
This incredibly informative video helped cement my choice of a 9020 I7-4770 for my first build- a video editing machine without spending the big bucks. I wanted something I could use to eventually make a new system out of, minus the motherboard, ram and chipset. The opti appears to have the most user friendly case and most upgradeable system of all the older computers. Thanks game bench guy!
Glad I could help!
I got a 7010 DT with an i7 and 8GB of RAM that was only $140. Even included all the cables, keyboard, and mouse.
That pretty good. I really wanted to elaborate on the xx10's with the 3770. For a little more money, the 3770 will blow away the Haswell i5's. It does have a few compromises still, but I bought one and I plan to go over how to get around the SATA and USB3 slots blocking the GPU.
@@TheGameBench Looking forward to that video.
@@urmomsahoe1 I think I'm going to tackle that one just after the new year.
@@TheGameBench This relates to the comment I just left about the 7010 being still a desirable box over any that are limited to 16Gs of ram. Please go into the 7010 towers (not SFF of course) details, and let us know if this is just not up to the 7020 in too many other ways. My investment into new PSUs and GPUs is worth it to me if I can move them to other Dells as I see a deal on a better new used Optiplex.
Great video! I'm actually guilty of making videos on this exact subject and not giving enough technical details. You did a great job of giving a large amount of info without being too wordy. Keep it up, I love seeing these systems get a new life!
Thanks! I just stumbled into these. I've generally been about building new systems, but I've really enjoyed converting these, and flipping them.
definitlly subscribing, as a reseller of these older optiplex systems you did a great job outlining them and the things to look for
This guy is legit awesome 👌😍. He does the explanation way better than others. This is a hard working man..
I didn't realize you changed your channel name until I happened to spot you in the thumbnail or beginning. Good to see you back making content.
Thanks man. This one took quite a bit of work to get done. Far more than the type of videos I was making. I should be able to streamline things and hopefully get them up more often. I saw your update and I hope things are starting to get better for you.
@@TheGameBench Thanks, major life changing things on my end, my back is really bad waiting for surgery & I've lost the use of both legs from it. My wife's younger brother just died who she was very close with & his wife is in very poor health, so we may be raising his kids in Idaho down the road if things don't get better. Because of this I've taken some time away from YT. I love your subtle production values on your video, the various bullet points neatly lined up on the left side of the screen look top notch, terrific job editing & arranging your main points, quite impressive bud.
Thanks so much man. I used to stress out way too much and now I feel like I'm doing much better even without focusing on trying to be perfect. And man, that kills me to read that. I'm so sorry and I want you to know I'm really pulling for ya'. Sucks that it's come to surgery, but hopefully it can give you back your mobility and quality of life.
Thanks man! I was going to pick up an Optiplex to turn into an Emulation PC and this guide came in real handy!
I've spent hours researching this subject, and yours explained more than any of that time and other videos. Thanks so much!

love the bloopers, great video mate, your honesty is what sold me, i was going to buy one of these systems, but re-thinking my options, I subbed as well, great work.
Finally one video with All my questions answered! instead of seeing like 20 videos
You are Awesome! Thank you for this! 👏👏👏
The first adventure I ever took into these OptiPlex machines was a couple years ago when I bought a 780 for about $100, added an additional 4 GB of RAM and threw in a GT 730 graphics card. Put Linux on it and it's still running. (I know a GT 730 isn't all that great, but it plays old compatible Steam games decently enough.)
Thanks, helped me buy my first entry level gaming pc.
Glad I could help!
Thanks so much for this, I went from nearly pushing the button on a SFF 3020 to spending a bit more on a MT 9020. No immediate intention to update the system but I want to keep my options open. Great video!
Thanks! Always good to have options.
i really payed attention this time and this vid clarified A TON
One point you missed about the 7010/9010's is that it's one of the last systems to support XP drivers. So if you want to run older games you could configure a dual boot to run XP and a newer OS as well.
I just ordered a 9020 since I have watched all your vids now. Thanks for all your advice.
No problem!
Absolute best video about optiplex I have seen so far, provided exactly the info I was looking for. Earned a sub! Keep the great work buddy.
Awesome, thank you!
I've been looking around for someone to provide detailed info on low-budget Dell PC. I've just picked up a Dell 7020 with i7 and 8GB ram with 1TB HDD for $90fj. I've just installed a GT 430 with 2GB ram as that is the only CPU that I could afford as PC parts in Fiji are just daylight robberies and online shopping is not an option here. All I can do is watch these kinds of videos and dream of what parts can help my build "it's free".

Thank you for you video. I have a 7020 that was hit by lightning. I had it tested, and it's said only the motherboard. I have to choose between a 7020 with I5 and 9020 with I7 and $75 difference in price (I already have the I7 CPU). Your video makes it clear there's not much the 9020 does more so my choice is made. Thank you for clearing up the muddy waters. Incidentally you were also my coach to mod the original 7020 to fit the Nvidia 1080 and your instruction was my masterpiece. Thank you kindly.
Only just come across your videos, but enjoying how 'to the point' you are

You said the 7020 & 9020 use the Q81 chipset, didn't you mean Q87?
BEST EBAY BUYER ADVICE EVER: "...patience...you're going to have to wade through alot of crap to find a good deal..."
Soooo true, but with patience, persistence and diligence you can find some epic deals.
Holy crap! I can't believe I did that. That's a huge typo. Yes, the Q87 chipset. Thanks for pointing that out. And that's so true with eBay. Patience and persistence is the key to getting good deals in eBay.

Hello! Thank you for providing this incredibly informative video.
Last night I won a bid on eBay for an Optiplex 7020 for approximately $108 including shipping. The machine does not have neither an HDD or caddy in its case, nor a power cable, and I did not want to begin regretting the purchase at that point. Personally I did not want to interpret these missing components as serious issues, as the machine-according to the seller-had been tested beforehand, and is in virtually mint condition. As for the seller, they are reputable and the auction or purchase is supported with buyer protection.
Fortunately I have a spare power cable laying around, but I had been searching on eBay for Optiplex 7010 HDD caddies since this one is missing, although I do hope that I can find a cheap one. The machine is equipped with a proprietary 3.30GHz Intel Core i5-4590 and 8GBs of RAM.
It has no dedicated graphics card, and the machine instead uses its integrated graphical hardware. I just wanted to ask you, though, whether or not you personally thought that this purchase at its price point was worth it at all, and whether you thought that any further maintenance would be necessary before operating this machine.
I've spent as much as $120 on these with a HDD and 8GB of RAM with i5's. I would say you didn't get a bad deal. Adding a HDD is cheap. You could find a 1 to 2TB drive for $20 to $30. I also highly suggest adding a 250GB SSD for about $30 as it really will make it feel like a newer computer. As for the HDD tray, I remove the HDD cage so I can put whatever GPU I want in these, but you can find the trays for pretty cheap on eBay. Also, if you want to add more RAM, another 8GB is about $15.
I think it's totally worth it. If you're gaming, you can toss a dedicated card in there and with all these upgrades, have spent under $300 for a decent gaming computer. You can run up to a 1060 off the factory power supply with a SATA to PCIe adapter. I feel like that's wroth it and to get a similar system with new parts, you'd be looking at a Ryzen 3 1200 and the cheapest it would come in, is almost $600.
Made a great purchase ... Here in Brazil I found an HP ProDesk for 104 dollars without HD and ram, but I had SSD and 16GB ram Here spare. HPs are also good ... But of course there is a lack of a graphics card and a decent font, but still, it's worth it!
Man this is incredible. So much fat to trim here, you’ve made it sooo much easier and more clear. It’s a convoluted market for these now that there is so much content about it being a “gaming computer”
Thanks! I really appreciate it.
thanks
just ordered mine, cant wait!
Bro youre the optiplex Guru!!! Jesus!!
I just picked up 4 different optiplex units for $50 each. Lots of businesses get rid of them because they are out of warranty, but that's not a problem for us, is it?
*looks up from cracking open a brand new GPU...
Damn right!
Did you find them on a website or go around to local business asking?
@@jammygiinger625 looked for keyboards on craigslist. Saw the computers when I showed up. Asked him how much...
WHERE DO YOU BIY THEM FROM 😥
@@datnoob9095 I picked them up on a very touristy island. Go someplace with lots of hotels and start asking around the local E-cycle shops. All these PCs are now out of warranty so the hotels ditch them ASAP. It's all a business write-off for them so it's our gain. They work great.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
I just found your channel! Thank you so much for sharing. It taught me the difference between the opti-plex models I was considering. I am planning on trying to start a plex server and a few old pc games I like to play nothing to fancy.

@@ishe570 Well, I put it in the 5.25" bay right below the optical drive and I mount the SSD to the side next to the front fan. I just need to film A-roll and edit and it'll be ready to upload.
hey! how’s ur pc doing? i’m planning on getting a 3020 too, what fps did u get? and was the rx 570 a good gpu?
Donut hey, my PC was running well but I ended up selling it for another pc. FPS was a mixed bag depending on the titles. I was able to play Fallen Order at 60 FPS in medium settings but it ran really hot (55C CPU - 62C GPU). It’s capable but you want to make sure to open the lid to allow air to escape.
Great insight on today's buying guidelines...You just answered several of my questions...
Awesome! So glad you found it helpful.
I'm not sure if you covered it because that was a lot of info, but if you're replacing the PSU on the 7020 and 9020, they have proprietary connectors for power instead of 20/24 pin power. You'll need an adapter to make another PSU work. I recently transferred a 7010 over to a flashy RGB case. The video card restriction is REAL. Kind of limited to a 470 mini ITX and a 1060 Zotac Mini for cheap options. I loved this video and this was extremely detailed for anybody looking for a foolproof guide. Great content. You have earned a sub.
Yep, I covered that briefly in the video. Something I definitely intend to expand on with future videos. Also, thanks for subbing!
tried this experiment a couple of months ago, i went to a local news paper business that were throwing away Optiplex 990 machines with an i7 2600. I bought a 430W PSU and an RX480 from Craigslist for $70, bought a new 256GB SSD for like $25, and 2 additional 4GB sticks of DDR3 ram for 16GB total, and bam; gaming PC.
It was a fun project. I gave it to my nephew as he'll get much more use out of it than I ever will though.
Yep, I will say that the 2600 and the 3770 are the exceptions to the older systems. Especially when they're throwing them away. When I first started doing this, I was doing it with the intention to flip them, but I've been having a lot of fun doing it.
It also keep me from building new builds that I don't need. Almost every one of them I've sold were to kids as their first gaming computers. It's pretty fun.
Playing BL3 on an i7 2600 1050ti no need to buy a psu, plug and play baby.
Yep, I have an HP G1 600 SFF under my workbench. I put a 4690 in it with a 1050 Ti. Thing doesn't pull more than 180 watts at max load.
I was inspired once more. Got myself a 1050Ti today for $40 which require no power cable, lets see where this will take me
After almost giving up on my 9020 conversion I just wish someone could have mentioned that Netframe with several additions must be installed on Windows to properly install chipset and audio drivers with the 'entry point error'. Damn.
I know it's not really the scope of this video, but older optiplex i3 sffs paired w those wimpy (by modern standards) oem radeon 7570/8570s are actually awesome retro xp machines! $50 out the door and your maxing out Doom 3, Half Life 2, F.E.A.R. etc.
And I have thought about that as a possible video idea. Hell, the micro could even make a pretty cool DOS gaming/emulation system.
@@TheGameBench - I'd love to see that. I have 2 uSFF 790s that I'd love to experiment with. I just can't make myself get rid of them, they were too cheap and take up so little room, so I'm waiting to figure out what to do with them. I might grab some dirt cheap mSATA and mSATA to 2.5" adapters to toss in them (less than half the cost of a 2.5" SSD) and go from there.
FINALLY SOMEBODY WHO GOES IN-DEPTH AND EXPLAINS EACH SYSTEM NOT JUST THE CARD
I have been trying to figure out the best budget friendly iracing setup and you may have just figured it out for me!!
a bit late, but since i just recently bought a 7020 without ever knowing this video existed. i got mine off of a auction, well 2 from a auction since i payed a bit much for 1 of them, this came with 1 keyboard, 1 mouse and 2 screens. without a HDD or SSD, it costed me 56$, i already had a old pc with LGA 775 so this was a well needed upgrade, the i5 4590 is a decent powerhouse, but i decided to spend 114$ on a used i7 4790, could have gone for a K for a bit more, but got stuck with this thing since i bid a bit high. Anyways, i was using a 1650 OC around 2000mhz core clock on my old pc which was bottlenecking my cpu, Even now this 1650 bottle necks my cpu on forza horizon 4 max everything. but either way i run max on any game i play with 0 fps drops.
TLDR dont bother replacing your PSU, just get a 1650 with the money you would save on buying a PSU, its cheaper in the long end and 1080p is all you would be able to play anyways
Still seems like a decent deal. $170 for a 7020 with a 4790. Best I've gotten those for is about $200. Toss in a 2TB HDD and and 16GB of RAM and you'd be at about that price. Also, I've found that the PSU can even run a GTX 1060.
Yeah same thing I did, just I bought a 9020 and then watched the video.
I ditched PC gaming years ago in favour of consoles once HD TVs came out (X-Box360). Too much trouble. Maybe it's time I took a second look...

Dude... I bought an Optiplex 3010 with an i5-3470 and 8 GB DDR3 ram for $60.
I added a 240Gb SSD($25), a PCIE extender($5), GTX 770 Windforce ($50), and an EVGA 600w PSU ($40)
I have a now have a very capable Gaming PC with almost no effort or money spent. A used XB1 is $200 my new PC performs better and cost me less.
Nice work. By all means, at $60 I feel like one of the xx10 series are worth it. You certainly can find good deals locally, depending on where you are.
God dammit man! Here in Indonesia, with i5/i7 3rd Gen, it can go way up to $250 or even $350 due to the processor branding, while the companion components (HDD, PSU, etc) is still working but very trash & low level shit! I wish I can buy these things with that kind of price over there!
Because of that, i finally took lower level by catching used G41 LGA775 Motherboard , Core 2 Quad Q9400, 2x4GB DDR3, a 120GB SSD + 1TB used HDD, 450 Watt 80+ PSU, Armageddon Infineon 1000 Case, and used Radeon R7 240 GPU for backup computer & little "casual" gaming rig. Still kickin though, CSGO & Dota still get 60FPS at 720P lowest settings.
Really good informative video! I am now a follower from Australia!
Thanks! I really appreciate it.
Great video, thank you. Looking forward to checking out your other content.

@@TheGameBench Is it worth paying more for an optiplex 9020 or whatever with an i7 instead of the i5?
@@michaelpenko7529 Considering the current prices that 7020/9020's with an i5 are going for absurd prices, it's worth considering. I've seen models with an i5 go for as much as $180 and I've gotten systems with an i7 for as little as $200. Hell, I would even advise getting a 7010/9010 with an i7 3770 for around $160 over a 7020/9020 with an i5 for the same price. I still wouldn't pay more than $120 for one with an i5 and I've stopped buying them.

this is so useful! i see you have more videos about dell optiplexes so i'm going to have to subscribe for this useful information!
Thanks for the sub! And I'll be sticking to OptiPlex's for a little while.
This is amazing, you really did your research, here's a new subscriber, thank you good sir! :)
I've buit in many 790's (I stick with the i7 2600 variants) Using 90 degree angle/ lower profile sata connectors has always allowed me to use longer GPU's .
I actually just built 3 as I got an amazing deal on 3 780ti's.
Love the content, keep it coming
Thanks! I had thought about that, and I've talked to people that say the right angled connectors don't work, and I think it's just a issue depending on the GPU. I actually picked up a 9010 with a 3770 to do a video about this. I wish I would have elaborated in this video that the 2600 and the 3770 are exceptions to the rule.
@@TheGameBench I've used 90 degree usb3 adapters in a few Acer OEM's that I put 390x's in. They worked great ☺️
@@stevenwilliams6638 Yep, I bought a low profile USB cable as well. I also found some low profile SATA cables that might work better than the normal 90 degree connections so people don't have to worry about GPU compatibility.
This is EXACTLY the video I needed. I've been looking into putting together a decent emulation PC for under 500 and feel like I've been mindlessly scrolling through PC listings forever.
Glad my video could help.
Hi, it is the best video of comparing different Optiplex series ! Espescially to note what kind of memory is installed.
I have bought a used 3020MT, i5, 8GB, 500GB-HDD, Multi-Burner (no bluray) in Dec20 at least for 120 EUR. OS is Win10pro/64 (incl.). Now contemplating to add the ATI-graphic card from this video...
thank you, this video helps a lot and clears up a ton
Thanks! Glad I could help.
Very informative. I've bought a couple of used Dells on ebay in the past for various reasons. Just no mini towers. One thing I can say however is that since this video was published it appears the prices have gone up somewhat. Sure seems like a sellers market in 2020. Currently around $250 upwards at this point. Stay vigilant. ;)
Yeah, I've noticed that as well. I don't want to presume that this video had anything to do with it, but I've still been able to find the i5's for close to $100 and the i7's for $200 to $250 still.
Ordered an Optiplex 7020 from Newegg and got shipped a 9020 with a 128 gig SSD instead. Only 4 gigs of RAM but I'm waiting on 8 gigs of DDR3 1600 in transit. I put in a GTX 1650 OC from Palit. Even with the limited RAM I do have I'm running Fallout: New Vegas at ultra detail settings at well over 100 fps in 1080p. I'm using a legacy 42" Toshiba Regza as my display and it works incredibly well. The entire cost? 475 bucks CDN which is less than the price of a PS4 Pro in Canada. I'm adding more storage next week as soon as I can get some extra SATA cables shipped. Thanks for getting me back into PC gaming my friend. Stay safe and all love from Canada.
You are the Optiplex king. Excellent videos! Just terrific.
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful.
Thanks for the clarification. It was on point
Thanks! Glad it was useful.
VERY WELL DONE. Huge thanks man!
Thanks! Glad you found it useful.
Thank you. Very informative and helpful !
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and I'm happy you found it useful.
Got a 9020 with an I5-4590 with 4GB and a 2TB Drive for $130 shipped. Upgraded the Ram to 16GB with some sticks I had and plan to run some distributive computing and possibly some low end GPU gaming with a 1050Ti. The only issue I had is that the fans run way too slow. I took a simple six channel NZXT fan controller I had lying around and put it in the 5 1/4" bay. Wired the fans so that the RPM could still be read on the MB. Now I have full control on the case and CPU fan. These Haswell chips are great. I would suggest applying new thermal compound for the CPU. Mine was dried up and brittle.
I found it's hit or miss on the thermal paste. Some I've gotten have been super dried out and some were still soft enough to be usable. I always replace it regardless and I'll definitely be pointing that out in the build video.
super helpful and relevant. thanks
I'm happy that it's helping people out, and thank you for watching it.
just had to pause the video right in the middle to comment what has been said countless of times already but idc :D
it's easy to follow for the most part while not being oversimplified (or literally leaving out crucial information like other youtubers do) and for once i'm actually understanding a bit of what is said even as someone who is COMPLETELY clueless about PCs and never has built one before lmao. great content
That's really my drive... to make these video digestible for people of all experience levels. I'm glad you found it helpful.
Thank you so much I was hoping to get the 9020 but i wasn't sure. This helped me though
Glad I could help!
Great video - you deserve to get more subscribers! 😊👍
You did great I learned a lot thanks I decided to go with a 9020 thanks so much. Subbed your channel
Thanks for the sub!
Thanks for the guidance. I just bought a Dell Optiplex 7020 MT Intel Core i5-4590 3.30GHz 12GB RAM 2 TB HDD Win 10 Pro for $100 plus $28 shipping. They said it has 1600Mhz RAM - but it did not. eBay Seller is shipping 1600Mhz RAM now. Great job.
Great video well paced.
Thank you so much, this video helped alot!
Glad it helped!
Great vid bro u cleared up a lot of questions i had
Glad I could help!
Hello from the quarantimes in 2020. Your video helped me work out that I got screwed on the RAM speed (mismatched 667mhz sticks in a 9020). The prices you gave seem like they need to be doubled for Australia, which is pretty normal. Fantastic video though, thanks.
Yeah, you guys get totally screwed on prices out there. Bummer about the RAM too man.
Great info! Great video!
Got a 7020 SFF Optiplex off eBay for $49 shipped. Added 32Gb of ram, an i7-4785T, a LiteOn 256 M2 Sata drive (via an adapter), along with a Quadro P1000 AND a Quadro NVS 510. Using it to drive 9 23in Monitors. Extremely compact, low power and crazy cheap for what it will do.
Hi man u rocked the info about gaming pcs in my mind
Very informative video. Subscribed.
