This HUGE Alienware gaming PC cost me just £40 ($50), but what's inside?...

  • After checking out some of the local PC deals near me I came across this fantastic looking old Alienware Area 51 PC. With the description brief and my knowledge of these older systems limited, I decided to take a chance and buy it anyway knowing that the cases alone sell for quite a tidy sum of cash on the used/collectors market.
So let's open up this mystery spec Alienware and see what hardware is hiding inside.
We'd better also see if it works!
    Thanks for watching :)

You should totally revamp that thing with modern hardware whilst keeping the classic case!

  • @DoomWalker42

Turn it into a high end sleeper PC with a full custom water loop. But definitely get a dremel and get rid of those hard drive cages. You could also spray paint the interior metal casing black or a different colour to suit the theme and even make your own PSU shroud from acrylic. It would be super cool to get an ultra budget water cooled PC like under £100 for a full CPU and GPU loop though that's probably impossible. It's a shame you couldn't upgrade it or play any games really. Alienware should just give up making PCs and should just sell their cases as standalone parts. People would buy them a lot just for the asthetic and because they have a named brand.

Remember the Water loops, on top, why that? You need to find that, not do a remake distorting it!

Don't go full modern with it. Upgrade it to an LGA 775 board with something like a Core2Quad. That will let you use PCI-E and you can still keep Windows XP on it as well. Plus that shouldn't be too much in terms of heat for the case. Hell, if you can get the right board, you can even use DDR3 with it. :)

Try to stay around $1000 - $1500 USD as low as you can keep it. I would paint the white parts of the case actual glow in the dark neon green and put some black light leds through the upper ridge line so they shine down onto the painted parts. And maybe some lighting under the case as well to make it look like its floating.

I run almost the exact same computer case accept I use the Area 51 Predator 1 EXTREME 3550 case the only difference between the two are the HDD cages and a Single 120x120x38mm exhaust fan. The stock GPU for this system was a 128mb ATI radeon 9600XT, the original PS was an Alienware branded 400w.
I know these machines inside and out and can help you get it sorted if you need any assistance. The case weighs in at a whopping 18.6 kg fully loaded as it is an all steel base chassis with a Plastic ABS shell. If you use a dremel then you will need reinforced cutting wheels and a drill to remove some rivets to modernize it.

Regardless, I’d build it all from second hand parts you can find online, with an aim to make maximum profit.

Back in 2011 I changed out all the components on my Area 51 which was a newer model than this one. I put new 1200 watt power supply, Intel I-7 Gen1, and Asus Rampage 4 MB, 16 GB of DDR 4 Dram, A Samsung Pro SSD Drive, and a new Nvidia Gforce FX card. I cant remember which one. Great improvement. Everything fit fine and ran great. Then Just this month I just finished another complete overhaul with this case. Intel I-9, Asus Maximus Hero XI MB, New SSD Nmv 2.0 Vnand card, 16 gb of 4000 mhz DDR 4 Dram, A new Nvidia GTX 2060 Super, and kept my power supply. Looking back I should have got a new digital modular power supply with less watts. These cases are what made Alienware what it was. Not what was in them. Yes, it is a heavy SOB to move even a few inches, but it looks bad! It is a nice quality case and well worth keeping and rebuilding in it. When Dell took over they turned Alienware into the joke of the industry. These cases were the very last of the good looking cases built by Alienware in Miami Fla. They have never looked bad ass since then. If you rebuild in your case, it would sell so fast your head would spin. People would buy it for the case and be happy that you rebuilt it. I put some of the best products in mine that totaled out to around $1,800 to build. You could put a 3rd gen Intel and lesser other parts and make a hell of a profit on it. What ever you do, dont let that beautiful case go to waste. Give it the honor it is due.

This is the PC that got me into PC gaming, and i still stand by it being my best memory ever. (this Alienware looks way early 2000's? mine was late 2008 ish era)
This is a very early revision to this version of the Alienware area 51 I had as my first pc, mine didn't have the lock on the front, didn't have these 4 lower USB ports, Didn't have the power/activity indicators and such in the front and the side of the case looks to be a slightly different design.
I used mine in its stock spec until September 2015, it had a Asus P6T deluxe V2, i7 920, two GTX 260 core 216 editions (1792mb vram versions) and 6GB ram and it originally came with two 500gb hardrives in raid 0.
I got the PC in the above spec for £850 in late December 2009 (ebay second hand)
In 2012 ish the hardrive setup died and i upgraded to a 120gb ssd like we all did back then and threw in a then huge 3TB hardrive as storage and another 6GB ram and overclocked to the best i could get the 920 too
That 3TB hardrive died in 2014 after only 2 years service, but i replaced it with two 2tb drives
In september 2015 when i got my first paycheck i bought a GTX 970 and slapped that in replacing the 7 year old GTX 260's
Then march 2016 I Upgraded all the internals to a Z170 Asus Pro gaming, i7 6700k, 16GB ram, Evo 212 cooler and a new power supply (this case actually has some weird over sized power supply that's larger than standard so there was a gap above or bellow the supply)
Whenever the NVME Samsung 960 released i got the 500gb model instantly as i was super hyped for it's release, it's still cool and damn, it's alot cheaper now lol
Then in April 2017 I wanted to give my then girlfriends PC my 970 as a upgrade so i got a 1070 for £320 New off some lad who won it in a competition (replacing her two GTX 260's (hint hint))
But that Alienware only had that 1070 for a breif time, only 2 weeks passed and i ordered a Thermaltake core P3.... and the Alienwares fate was sealed after me owning it for 7 years and 4 months :( now he sits in the original Alienware dust cover in the bottom of my wardrobe, gutless, waiting for me to get the PC parts back from my Ex Ex so i can rebuild it to it's OG spec

I have a Titan Black aswell, yes it does overheat, I can play alot of games with high settings using it but it would black screen and reboot, at first I thought I had a problem with my PSU as in it couldnt provide enough voltage long enough so I upgraded it (it was old anyway), then I started having the same issue again with black screening when playing games for a few seconds, so I did the usual furmark GPUZ, MSI afternburner etc and omg its heat ramp up was ridiculous, after a bit of tinkering I found out for some reason the fans werent ramping up with the heat change fast enough so i've set a custom profile in MSI that underclocks by about 7% and a custom fan curve and now it works perfect, all my games 60 fps plus, furmark ran at fullscreen for around 2 hours before I got bored lmao.
Also congrats on that awesome find, id love one of them cases.
