Tod's Workshop explored this and that there are spanning devices like the all wood gaffe lever and all iron goat lever. They we're however not integrated like the Da Vinci one but at least the use of gaff and goat lever means its a simpler system to make.
How could we achieve a longer draw length with this reloading mechanism?
