    I am a bit worried by the lack of overlap between the left pauldron and the cuirass. While the lower gap is covered by besagew, the upper one is unprotected and is traditionally a jouster’s favorite spot to hit as the lance can catch on to that part of the armor and deliver the full force.

    • @xboxprotogen95
      @xboxprotogen95 4 роки тому +34

      This isn't jousting armor. This is combat armor. If it were jousing armor then the would make the elbow armor be big plates in fixed positions one hand would be for riding the other for holding the lance. The shoulder armor would also be different as the arm holding the lance would be less armored then the one holding the horses reins to ensure that the jouster can hold and use his lance properly. His tassests would also be at an outwars angle so it could protect the riders legs better whilst on horseback and make it comfortable for the rider. Or he would atleast have a shield on his shoulders. Not trying to be rude or anything just saying.

    • @scottdick296
      @scottdick296 4 роки тому +10

      I think he was saying that if it's a favorite place for jousters to aim their lance, it's probably a favorite place for other people to aim a lance, spear, etc.
      I don't know either way of a gap that big is historically accurate, obviously it's a hard spot to protect without sacrificing mobility, but it still seems like the most vulnerable part of the armor.

      @Mr_Chode 3 роки тому +6

      You have your arming doublet which is padded and can have mail in the exposed parts or you could just have mail on underneath. Also remember that as someone (a knight) who has trained their entire life knows his weak spots and won't easily give them up. As would the other knight you would be fighting has similar spots.

      @lt.branwulfram4794 4 роки тому +8

      I look for practicality and style when I’m looking for a harness for myself. Getting your own harness shouldn’t have to depend completely on historical accuracy as long as you love how it looks and functions. Personally, I would want a Gothic style, a bit less ornate than others but still complete with the obligatory fluting, but I’d also want a sallet with a visor heavily influenced by the Great Helm and the Frog Mouth designs, so no bevors for me. For that extra flair, I may also want darker armour, maybe a smoked chrome finish, to reinforce that “Black Paladin” look I’m going for.

      It looks to be a late transitional Sallet. Near to the end of 15th-century, sallets began a transformation into the shapes known as "transitional". This particular example looks to be based on a piece known as A72 from the Wallace Collection dated on 1520 and is attributed to have been manufactured in the north of Italy. It was likely used with a gorget without bevor and belonged to the collection of the Count of Nieuwerkerke, and acquired by Sir Richard Wallace in 1871. This style of sallet can be seen in the painting by Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc in his piece “Castles and Warfare in the Middle Ages”.

      It weighs only about 40-50lbs and renders you nearly invulnerable against sharp, bladed weapons. Furthermore, the weight is so well distributed it won't slow you down much (especially if you are trained to use it and very physically fit as a knight would likely be). I think you are seriously overestimating how important protection is in battle. History shows that less armor (like what an 11th century knight would wear) or even no armor (such as Celtic warriors who would fight naked) was stomped out due to the power creep brought about by technological advances in both arms and armor (which is why knights of this era rarely if ever used shields and used larger, more powerful weapons like a poleaxe, crowsbeak, or warhammer. Weapons shifted from primarily slicing open flesh to cracking open cans.
