I own an 18 WRX. I work at a Subaru dealership, and have driven many 15's. Savagegease is the ONLY reviewer I've ever seen who's actually commented on the timing pulls, on the shifter, on driving dynamics, and more. Jesus, I've seen so many reviews] fail to mention any of these things. Sub'd for life.
SG is one of the best car reviewers on UA-cam imo. He's very honestly and detailed, love the underbody parts, and his filming is amazing. Super underrated.
SG is THE best car reviewer on UA-cam in my opinion. I've been following him since he began 2+ years ago so I have a good understanding of his "competition" as far as UA-cam goes. His passion and attention to detail really shows in all aspects (knowledge, honest opinions, exceptional camerawork & editing, etc.) Super underrated = so true!
He basically begged his fans for money so he could buy a brand new turbocharged Mustang... on top of his actual salary and youtube money. Imagine brad pitt asking his fans "hey guyz i really really wanna buy this humble $15million house and if y'all could chip in and donate some money that'd be kool, ty"
I think Saabkyle has much more detailed reviews but they're more of an overview than an opinionated review and this guy definitely has much better production than Kyle.
I won't be watching any more of his videos for one simple fact. He called this an Impreza WRX. That isn't a thing anymore. The Impreza and WRX are separate cars now. What kind of car reviewer doesn't know that simple little fact. They WRX and Impreza have been separate since 2015 for fuck sakes.
Your level of detail, stating all the pros and cons, and being genuinely unbiased is greatly appreciated. Just found you after watching several others reviewers for years. Thank you!
I have a 2017 and love it so far. A stage 1 tune fixes a lot of the issues most people have. It's a fun daily and a good value. I think I might be the only wrx driver that doesn't vape!
John's S2K omg.those who vapes are only the unhealthy people that doesn't care about their health and looks.they just think its cool and for some it became a hobby and a replacement for their cigarette buds addiction.
I just picked up a 2020 WRX Limited and I love it. The rawness that a lot of people complain about is what makes it a great car to me. It's the last of the old school affordable sports cars and the AWD makes is that much better. ALso, I agree about the owner stigma of the WRX. I'm 50 and I plan to keep my car mostly stock except for maybe a stage 1 tune eventually, to eliminate the timing pulls. I want to get at least 10 years out of this car, so I don't want to stress the engine by pushing it too far like most tuners do. Besides I mostly like the car the way it is...I don't think it's missing a whole lot.
Good all around car. I live in the Great White North and this will get you to and back from anywhere at anytime of the year. Plus it has decent gas mileage you are not filling up every 10 minutes like the STI. That thing has a fuel tank the size of a shot glass.
I bought a new 2017 WRX and '18. Both have more rattles from cheap plastic crap than any car I have ever owned. Notchy gears and a clutch so springy, I feel like I'm gonna burn it out or choke the car off at every light. I hate this car and can't wait to buy another German car.
@@nileyoung2589 What are you talking about? I owned and drove TWO of them. Not my fault it is a cheap plastic rat-trap. If they drop a stick shift in the new supra, then I'm going there.
I bought an 18 wrx limited about a month ago and honest review, I love it. I came from a modified fa5 Civic si and they are different and there are definitely some things to complain about like the power being inconsistent, speakers are meh but if these things bother there are plenty of fixes. I think most people would be happy with it. For me, a perfect daily in Colorado! :)
The best review I've seen, heard, or read on the 2018 WRX. I already got mine in June, but I still look for these reviews to see if there are any missed details. Yup! I can't thank you enough, Mr. Goose, for such an honest, thorough review. I've learned new things that I hadn't learned in any other review.
The mention of how timing is pulled is why i watch you! Never heard another reviewer mention this butnhave from owners. I love that you point that out! Thank you and fantastic review
@@taiwilson8966 Yeah dude, the STI starts at around 37,000 and if you want the nicer interior with leather/recaro seats its 41,000 (before tax!). I have a 2018 WRX with the premium sport package no regrets, only thing I did was get a Cobb tuner for it which fixes the issues with the power distribution. The only reason to get the STI right now imo is if you are bringing it to the track and will be making use of that superior suspension, clutch, and brakes.
The WRX is the first Subaru I’ve bought and I have virtually zero complaints period. Some people if not most are impossible to please and I feel unrealistic expectations get in the way of practicality, reliability and just raw fun. At first the shift to 2nd gear was a pain in the ass but I have now mastered it and couldn’t be happier with the WRX looks and all.
I know this comment is old but how did you master that? I bought my 2018 WRX Premium in March this year and shifting into 1 and 2 is still difficult, I can only get a smooth shift from 3 and higher
I didn't have to drive the 18' WRX to notice the timing pulls too being in the passenger seat. My current 11' Prius pulls harder and doesn't have any timing issues. I've owned 2 WRXes and 1 STI in the past and the first thing I told my co-worker who owned the 18' WRX is to go Cobb. That's the biggest upgrade that I recommend doing above everything else. He doesn't think a $600 game controller would make the car that much better. Well, he doesn't know enough about his car.
@Merl Klarhoelter Well the namesake of the WRX and inspiration for the car is from the World Rally Championship... which they withdrew from years ago. So sure there is history, but what is their current motivation?
You are probably the most calm person to talk about WRX, and I don't mean that in a bad way by no means. I can fall asleep listening to you talk about my new car, which is great :D
A lot of recent comments asking about the car "pulling timing". This is referring to ignition timing. That is to say, how quickly the spark plugs provide spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder. Ideally, you want this to happen when the piston is as close to top dead center in the cylinder as possible. This is when the air/fuel mixture is most compressed, and therefore will provide the biggest bang when ignited by spark, thus producing more power. As engine speeds rise, spark plugs need to fire faster to keep up, or they'll start igniting the mixture as the piston is moving away from top dead center slightly, therefore providing less bang and less power. So a car's computer will speed up the timing (advance) to keep the combustion process happening at the ideal time for maximum power/efficiency. There are various parameters the ECU is looking at when deciding how much to advance timing as the engine accelerates. At the same time, all engines, but particularly modern turbo engines, look at many many factors that can necessitate the ECU retarding timing (pulling). The primary reason would be to prevent knock (or in response to detected knock). Knock is when the air/fuel mixture combusts in the cylinder while the piston is still on the compression stroke (upward stroke during the intake phase). This puts a force on the piston that is counter to the direction it is trying to travel in, which can damage the piston, connecting rods, etc. In an engine like the FA20, you're dealing with the higher compression ratio of a modern direct injected turbo engine, and under heavy load (full throttle acceleration at high rpm) you get higher cylinder pressures, and high heat. Those things combined can cause knock since pressure + heat can cause spontaneous combustion. The issue many manufacturers face is that they need to create a stock tune or "map" for an engine that will work in many different conditions and be cost effective. So in the case of the USA, high altitude, low altitude, hot, cold, crappy 91 octane, good 93 octane, and on and on in many combinations. They need the tune to be reliable in a variety of conditions so they aren't paying out of pocket under warranty for frequent engine issues/failures, emissions compliant because the planet, and in the case of the WRX still have good power. That is a TALL order. Some companies can get it right (e.g. the Type R), and some companies like Subaru don't totally nail it. Luckily, the after market can easily "fix" this on the WRX while maintaining or improving upon reliability, and even mpg to an extent. Savagegeese is my father. In Dimension 3911-Xfthicc, that is.
Thank you for reviewing the Subaru WRX as a performance sedan instead of complaining about all the non-performance-related "missing features" that all the other reviewers obsess over.
LOVE the shirt with everything going on right now. Great review. At least you're honest about if you would have it as a dd with all factors considered. People like to make them seem like they're the end-all be-all for everyday driving, including non-snow climates, which always blows my mind.
I've been reading car magazines for more than 10 years, watching so many reviews on youtube but you are simply the best. I love the way you describe pros and cons of the car. You have my great respect
Why is there so much hate in the 18 wrx? Looks the same as the 15-17 wrx's and everyone loved them? And plus didn't they already announce that they will be chain g it up in a few years?
Aviator22 while I'm not too fond of the subdued styling of the newer ones, they have a nice sporty yet businessy look to it. But I think a lot of the issues people have with it is the powerband issues. Torque in weird places and power gets cut short up high. But I just drive an impreza wagon, lol. I don't know much about these.
Aviator22 the problem that people have with the car is 1 they haven't changed anything aesthetically, 2 the car looks like a 15-17 camry, 3 the powerband is weird and all the quirky styling queues are absent from the older Subaru's.
Brother, You have given one of the most concise, unbiased, and factual reviews of this car on UA-cam to date. Your articulate presentation is perfect. Keep up the good work. As for the car. I've started looking at buying a WRX and your review will stick out in my mind as I test drive the WRX. I've been an enthusiast since a very young age and now at almost 60 years old I'm contemplating purchasing this Subie. I've went thru a lot Euro stuff. Audi, BMW, Saab, Rover, some Japanese, Toyota, Mitsu, Isuzu, and Subaru. This car appears to have so much value for the dollar while only giving up little performance compared to the Audi's and BMW's. Thanks again, great job. Cheers.
Probably the best WRX review I’ve seen and I’ve seen a ton of them. Highly detailed, well informed and objective. Extra credit for going under the car and good point about the acceleration/tuning.
I'd say this might be the only car you'll find people, I for one, saying they know it's outmatched by car X under respect 1, car Y under respect 2, with car X and Y not costing more, but they still want, desire this WRX one. Both its aesthetics and handling are so characterful and one-of-a-kind that I have no problems saying that, while a Miata or a BRZ or a Cayman or a Type-R or an i30N handle "better", driving the WRX still gives me more joy.
I own a 2017, and blind spot monitoring would be nice to have. I agree that the rest is not necessary. But blind spot monitoring is not intrusive. I have driven other cars with it. Buy the base model. Mine new was $29k out the door.
Stock tune is weird -- torque dip at 4500, power falls flat at 5700, throttle mapping is all kinds of sensitive and wonky (35% input = 100% throttle), rev hang makes it chore to drive, puttering around a parking lot slowly makes the car quite herky jerky. This makes just about every owner want to get the off-the-shelf tunes. Not a fan of the cable-actuated shifter -- feels gritty, rough, like moving it through gravel (2015-2017).
All of this is totally spot on. I've got a 2016, and it is a blast half the time and a chore the rest of the time. I still love it, but it has plenty of quirks.
2017 owner here, Ive had the car for almost a year and still have issues with sloppy shifting and rev hang. Car has a super lumpy tune which cuts power, bounces around and falls flat in the middle and top of the rpm band. Its begun to feel very unrefined. The cable shifter is crap. Even with the Perrin Shifter bushing and shift-stop it is sloppy and rough. Aside from the long throws, My 25 year old shitbox commuter Geo Metro with a cable shift has a better feeling transmission. An Accessport is my next purchase for the car, but its annoying to potentially risk the warranty just to fix the huge flaws from the 2015-2017 batch of cars.
TheBongoman47 Ive been trying real hard to learn to love the quirks of the stock tune, but man it is real hard. Trying to ride out to end of bumper to bumper warranty...
Kai_001 when I first got my car it took some time getting used to but I don't know what review hang you guys are speaking of. Honestly it's not even noticeable. The power band can be fixed without a tune. I added axle backs and a charge pipe the dip isn't even noticeable anymore. Also I got a pitch stop mount , helps with driving slow in low gears doesn't jerk anymore. Perrin shift stop mount and bushing helped aswell. I had a factory short throw so all in all I like it. I'm afraid of getting a tune because I'm afraid I'll miss that punch you get from the stock tune. I don't want the smooth power I like the punch it gives
I wouldn't say it understeers...sure it's VERY EASY to understeer this car, but if you live with it and figure out how to chuck it in the corner and transfer its weight around, it's very neutral. You can understeer, oversteer, or just turn perfectly and it only depends on how you transfer the weight going into the corner...
It understeers. Subaru engineering has said in development they do it on purpose for safety reasons. They did the same with the BRZ when it launched. First tendancy is to push before it oversteers.
The honesty of your reviews is what I enjoy, just found your channel recently but seeing you rate cars completely unbiased and straight forward is something I’ve been looking for for a long time
Subaru manual calls for 93 octane for turbo motors (despite it not available at every station), so if you used 91 octane it could contribute to the problem. The exact words: "The engine is designed to operate at maximum performance using unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 93 AKI (98 RON) or higher. Unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 AKI (95 RON) or higher may be used with no detriment to engine durability or driveability. However, you may notice a slight decrease in maximum engine performance while using 91 AKI (95 RON) fuel."
Subaru's stock tune just behaves in this manner -- sharp torque dip ~4500 rpm, and the power falls flat on it's face at 5700 rpm, even though the redline is at 6700 rpm. Might have been done because Subaru thought (just a guess) that the average WRX owner is not going to be driving on the track often & will just daily the car -- which is why a boatload of torque is down in the low/mid range and the throttle mapping is all sensitive to make it FEEL quick puttering around town. If the power was also strong up top, it edges into the STI's stomping grounds, dinging the STI sales even more (the allure of the new FA20 has kept many from buying the STI, including me). So you have the WRX for the daily driver/occasional track, and the STI for the more hardcore bunch. I HATE the way Subaru approached the WRX's tune, but from a business & operations perspective (assuming that's why the WRX tune is the way it is), it makes sense. Owners will tinker & tune the car anyways, so why would Subaru go the extra mile to make the car that much better, at risk of cannibalizing their STI sales (which I'm sure yields a far larger net profit than the WRX) when people will be changing every thing on the car anyways. For such a small company, every dollar gained on the bottom line counts towards their future endeavors.
I own a 16 WRX and i vape lmao .I love my car everything abt it .You sit so low, visibility is awesome ,going around corners at speed it just sticks and turns like a go kart,no body roll at all .And the responsiveness of the FA20dit is why i chose this newer engine instead of the STI..Subbed savage geese your funny af but super knowledgeable
I'm a newbie when it comes to Subaru, but I've always liked the styling, the rumble, and the immensely capable AWD. Our main daily has always been a VW GTI (2006, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2015, and now 2017), but I'm looking at long-term alternatives. I was disappointed to find Subaru went with direct injection as well, and sure enough, the forums reveal low-mileage models losing as much as 20 whp due to carbon build-up. Great review as always, I'll have to keep looking.
Lmao, savage geese is a SAVAGE... I finally get why you've been using Subaru WRX's intro... because you're doing Subaru review (and the 02). Lmao. Real Savage Geese OGs remember him impersonating Subaru WRX fan in an ancient video lol
NO..Real OGs have been A1 since day1.....search "MCM | Regular Car Reviews | SubaruWRXFan | Jalopnik | Re-Created" from 2 years ago....Shit is SAVAGE lol...
Your reviews are spot on. I never comment on UA-cam channels, but with so much garbage out there, your ability to articulate each review is extremely refreshing. You deserve way more subscribers.
Another phenomenal review. I regretted selling my 2002 WRX till now. After seeing that this newer model carries over some of that older models DNA. I will look into purchasing one of these instead. Thank you.
I am a proud owner of a brand new honda civic si and i want to say i almost got this car. Savagegeese however stated all the reasons why i justified getting the si over the wrx. Its a great car and it is much faster (at least atm) but the interior quality and overall quality where not what i would expect from a 30k car. I could have gotten a used one for less but to me the si was a better deal then. New car > used car. Absolutely loved the review!
Great review. Can't believe it's coming to the end of this generation already. I remember picking mine up summer of 2014 when dealerships were still low in inventory. Hope the next generation includes some, but not all, new electronic technology at an affordable price.
Our '17 WRX has many of the same issues. The timing pulls and rev hang (that I can't believe you didn't mention) are mostly fixed with an off the shelf Cobb tune. It really smooths out the rev range and really doesn't add much boost or power. I can't believe they didn't update the UGLY chrome /halogen headlights for 2018. We opened ours, painted the housing all black and changed everything to LED and it makes it look so much more modern and appealing. Great review as always Mr. Goose
+Brandon Harlow The rev hang is sadly so common in all turbo manuals now that I just stop talking about it. As emissisons tighten its going to get worse. Thanks
i'm subscribed to dozens of car review channels, and i can honestly say that i get the most excited when i see new content from you. keep up the amazing work!
The WRX is amazing value. The STI is overpriced. You could drop 40k on an STI or get a base wrx for like what? 25k? and add 10K worth of mods and that thing will trash the STI for 5K less
glass transmission, wrx costs more than that and sti costs less than that (before taxes), no warranty, unreliable internals, cool if you wanna gap an sti a few times before your clutch starts to slip...
Lmfao. Why? These things are slower than your grandmother's Camry V6 and they are about as reliable as German cars. Hope you like filling oil, buying turbos, and fixing head gaskets
I like simplicity. Instead of fancy interior and advanced smart technology, I prefer something like the wrx which you twist the key and the engine always starts, and when you put it in gear it aways runs like a beast regardless of what's going on around it. Sure maybe spoiled teens around my age won't understand and will think that I'm either broke or stupid, but all I'm looking for is authenticity. I'm not attracted to fancy interior or luxury, instead I want to experience that last bit of fun and realism from a car while I can, before authenticity completely fades away as materialism dictates the future.
It's funny, I used my vape to help me quit smoking cigarettes for good, but ironically I bought a 2015 wrx a year after I stopped vaping. I have to start again to promote the stereotype. Gonna own a mustang eith my wrx in the future, I have to practice crowd hitting soon too.
I drove my friends WRX in that amazing red color, the way it sticks to the road is just sick...its a real joy to change lanes at high speeds, amazing car to drive...
Slowmo Wow I didn’t realised someone replied to my comment a year later. Well in accordance to your scenario, I won’t expect that someone driving like a racing driver would need an arm rest. So anyone (this reviewer included) who complains about that arm rest presumably be sitting back comfortably. And how close you can sit is still subjective to your height anyway. My comment was that if a taller dude has his seat adjusted as close to the wheel as his legs would allow him, he’ll still be able to use that arm rest no problem.
For the money, there is no better all around new car you can buy than a WRX. It's AWD all the time. 4 doors with plenty of cargo space. Looks classy yet sporty. Quick and fun to drive. Manual and simple. Comfortable to daily drive and for long road trips. Great gas mileage. You can get a base model for $27,000. And they hold their value extremely well. The WRX does nothing great, but everything good.
Patrick Burnett gti. I love the wrx on how it looks but the gti beats in wrx in almost every category. The power gains from modding that car are insane as well. Just of a tune alone you can get 300whp
Subaru come on get your act together. The WRX should have at least 310 - 320 hp. The STi should have at least 350-360hp or more. I remember when my STi was just as fast as a Camaro SS. Now the Camaro SS is so much faster running 12.3 @ 116 mph (bone stock with 455hp). You also have the Focus RS with 350hp that will smoke an STi in a straight line and around a track,
Yes, it pulls timing. Can't wait to install the basic tune in a few months. I think however the 2015-17 WRX ride is unsettled, bouncy, and actually a bit unpredictable on the street. It's the only part of the car that is unrefined IMHO. A few months ago I changed it out to a set of Ohlins and the car rides much more consistent, smoother, and planted without sacrificing too much in NVH.
huge false.. for 2015 and up models. I love that people under 25 typically hate the styling of it.. its very conservative, appearance wise, compared to the older generations. but still has a very aggressive look compared to other new sedans. so this appeals more to older crowds. Im almost 26 and have a 2016 wrx in dark grey and I freakin love it. It still turns heads but doesnt scream for attention and attract all the subie fan boys. it still sounds amazing with the FA20, has some rumble, and drives great. i see alot of guys over 25 and over 30, even 40, driving the 15+'s . i work with three other 2016 wrx owners, all about 30 years old, that could easily afford a car twice-three times as much. so take a seat. its a great car.
I wonder where Subaru is going with marketing these cars. Most of the cars I've bought since the late 80s have been GM compact crapboxes like Cavaliers. A couple of years ago, I got a Crosstrek built on the same Impreza platform as the WRX, and love it to bits, but when I'm done with it, I could totally feel comfortable in it. As a middle-aged, middle-class woman, it would not feel like driving a kid's car.
Has anyone else noticed the best cars today are usually the ones that have kept their original recipe. Ie: mustang, corvette, miata, wrx, Porsche, bmw, etc. they all execute their purpose very well. I don’t think it’s the manufacturer’s fault for struggling to maintain the same recipe, I think it’s more of the whole industry being forced to integrate new tech resulting in the loosing sight of the original purpose to be a driver’s car.
I had a 2009 WRX and now drive a 2016 WRX. I don't vape. I don't even let my friends vape as passengers in my car because I don't want to reinforce the stereotype.
I drive a base model. Everything you said is correct. I am what they consider an "older" driver, got the car when I was 30 years old. Aside from the guys with the mud-flaps, tow hooks and stanced cars, the community is pretty cool. Car is whole lot of fun to drive, if you live in snowy weather they are awesome. These engines are new and we have to see how their head gaskets perform over time (subarus are known for head blown gaskets around 130k miles) To me the car looks great, aggressive but subtle. cons- they come with summer tires; so, if you get them for winter driving you need to either get a set of winter tires or all-seasons. infotainment is terrible. laggy, bad Bluetooth connection, most of the apps on it don't work correctly. suburu interior, feels cheap, lots of plastic, no remote start and they still use the old style keys. No button to open the trunk, you have to use the key fob or opened from inside. Horrible rev hang on lower gears clutch feels heavy. pros- lots of fun, decent gas milage (depends on how you drive it, it can make a huge difference). Snow beast (with the proper tires). car is roomy. And my personal favorite, its very mechanical, you can hear the engine making noises the transmission feels very mechanical when you shift.
They need to redesign the back imo, looks like a fixed up Corolla/Camry! I always compliment the front design of this car, but the rear isn't there yet.
The rear of the car is boring, but I really don't care much about that. I don't care if the people following me are bored. ;-) The front of the car looks great, especially in white color. The black grill, hood intake and accents are in black and really pop. It looks nice from the side with the dark grey wheels, black accents on the mirrors and black strips on the roof.
Good review but dont agree with the price/value conclusion. It seems like you tested premium with performance package. Best bang for buck is the wrx base model which is around 27k. Yeah Recaro's are nice but... If it had Apple car play and Android auto that would be perfect. I would then get base model and spend money on nice set of wheels. I can paint brake calipers myself :)
You are the most savage of geese. That is all. Also, solid review as always. Continuing to talk about aspects of the car like reliability while cutting through bullshit that others refuse to is something that makes your content highly valuable.
I don't get why subaru doesn't sell vapes and vaping supplies. They might as well. Also make sure to include them with the purchase of any "sporty" car in their lineup. I haven't seen one that hasn't been lowered in ages.
I own a 2017 that is completely stock. It will stay that way as long as I own it. I guess that makes mine one of those so called "Unicorns". Maybe Savagegeese will want to drive it in 10 years as a rare example of an old WRX.
Most people I see here don't lower their WRX, because they need clearance for snow. I don't know why people buy these if they don't need AWD. If you lower it, it's going to be shitty for winter driving. If I lived in a warm state, I'd be going with RWD power. I've never heard of this vaping crowd with Subarus, I wonder if it's a regional thing.
I've owned my 16 wrx for 3 years and never had an issue with "destroying" the side skirts or rocker panels. Unless your 4ft tall I don't think anyone with have an issue scrapping those up.
WRX or STI what is the difference but the STI has more power. There the same car since 2002 for the most part and that is why there awesome. If you know how to MOD a 2002 then a 2018 will be cake. But look at the bigger picture the after market is strong with the WRX and STI because nothing for the most part needs to change. I just wish they would bring back a hatch, which prevents me to leave ford ST and move to another WRX which I would love, just space is more of a need then AWD. But the GOLF-R is being refreshed so I'll have to see what the future holds. However, I would get a STi before an RS, TS and Turning RAD is garbage not to mention the self explosion of the 2.3 block in the RS. Twice, Ford replaced my buddies block within 6K, WTF Ford. Ok, later bitches.
Transmission is different, suspension different, DCCD, etc. Engine different, though a carryover for years. I test drove WRX & STI back to back....very different cars IMO.
RexReese my thoughts,i just purchased the 2018 sti yesterday and its on the way for delivery.i test drove both 2017 and 2018 sti and parked them next to each other,2018 is quieter and smooter, and im surprised of how more sleek sharp looking on the 2018 in person which i thought the plastic trim in the bumper is a deal breaker specially that it aint no foglights but it has this huge brake caliper/rotor and 19" rims.im tellin u,check it in person and youll see what i mean.im waiting for mine to arrive next week.the one i test drove is RED,i paid for the WRblue base sti 2018.
Outdoor Layne ofcourse 2021 will be better (newer techs) we can also say the 2030 wrx will be better overall.but wait, theres 2040 or even 2070 model designs.
I own an 18 WRX Premium and my only complaints are: 1) shifting into 1 and 2 isn’t always smooth which you mentioned but I’m getting better every day, and 2) the loud interior! Seriously, I can’t even have conversations without shouting at the passenger while driving on the interstate. Everything else is perfect for me, I plan on holding onto mine forever and not make any modifications because it’s good right out of stock.
I own an 18 WRX. I work at a Subaru dealership, and have driven many 15's. I hope they fix it(rev hang) and the ''dead' spot around 5000 rpm !
Ethereous He says what he think sand it is often very much on the mark.
He played the SubaruWRXfan old intro song lmao!
An American Hero ikr? What a sick reference lol
oh right, that e-beggar piece of shit
The Moe can someone explain what went down?
He basically begged his fans for money so he could buy a brand new turbocharged Mustang... on top of his actual salary and youtube money. Imagine brad pitt asking his fans "hey guyz i really really wanna buy this humble $15million house and if y'all could chip in and donate some money that'd be kool, ty"
The Moe ohhh shit the ecoboost was fan funded? Wtf so did he set up a "fund my mustang page " or some shit? That's low
Can we please get this guy more subscribers? These reviews are so much better than about 95% of the rest of the garbage car "reviews" on UA-cam.
+Ted
Yet your're here commenting, watching and therefore supporting.
I think Saabkyle has much more detailed reviews but they're more of an overview than an opinionated review and this guy definitely has much better production than Kyle.
They'll come
I won't be watching any more of his videos for one simple fact. He called this an Impreza WRX. That isn't a thing anymore. The Impreza and WRX are separate cars now. What kind of car reviewer doesn't know that simple little fact. They WRX and Impreza have been separate since 2015 for fuck sakes.
Waas it really doesn't matter. ...its based on an impreza
Lets just take a moment to appreciate the cinematography and quality of this video... holy shit. well done
Damn strait! This shit Isn’t easy!
Savage geese is the most innovative car guy on UA-cam. Hope you take off on here man, you deserve it,
Your level of detail, stating all the pros and cons, and being genuinely unbiased is greatly appreciated.
John's S2K haha i own a wrx and i don't vape
I just picked mine up 10/11/17 and I also don't Vape lol😂🤣
I own a 17' WRX but i don't vape, i smoke real cigarettes. Am i cool enough?
West Finch no you're nasty lol.jk
People complaining about rev hang and I’m here just dreaming about owning the car. Saving for a down payment wish me luck.
its there, the car still rocks. good luck man
Good luck man. See you at the top.
Dang, you drive 30K miles per year??
JaguarSBA damn... that's a long trip. Glad you're liking the car though. I'm thinking about getting one
I have a 16 with 50k miles
“If you get the performance pack, you’ll lose your vape vent on top.” 😂😂😂😂
vent vape takes away too much headroom im 6 2 and i cant really stretch out my back fully
Besides I mostly like the car the way it is...I don't think it's missing a whole lot.
vape vent lmao
Good all around car. I live in the Great White North and this will get you to and back from anywhere at anytime of the year. Plus it has decent gas mileage you are not filling up every 10 minutes like the STI. That thing has a fuel tank the size of a shot glass.
I own a 2017 WRX and I would say your review is pretty honest.
I know this car is not for everybody but I must say it is for ME
I bought a new 2017 WRX and '18. Both have more rattles from cheap plastic crap than any car I have ever owned. Notchy gears and a clutch so springy, I feel like I'm gonna burn it out or choke the car off at every light. I hate this car and can't wait to buy another German car.
S T someone’s angry they can’t drive a subie
@@nileyoung2589 What are you talking about? I owned and drove TWO of them. Not my fault it is a cheap plastic rat-trap. If they drop a stick shift in the new supra, then I'm going there.
@@steventugwell6424 just a hating bitch
People are too uptight about the little things. Still one of the best do-it-all cars to this day.
short block assembly is only 2k too!
Minus the premium race package, you are looking at a $28,000 car... at that price, completely and utterly unbeatable.
premium race package?
Bought 15 Base for 25,500(before tax). Spent another 2900 aftermarket. Best car buying decision I have ever made.
where iam iit's 38, 000 or more
so whats the STI retail at now? 40-50???? fuck dude
Mitsubishi stop competing n subaru lost their inspiration
When 2 companies compete, the consumers win.
yeah, i miss my EVO 8
@Merl Klarhoelter Well the namesake of the WRX and inspiration for the car is from the World Rally Championship... which they withdrew from years ago. So sure there is history, but what is their current motivation?
You are probably the most calm person to talk about WRX, and I don't mean that in a bad way by no means. I can fall asleep listening to you talk about my new car, which is great :D
I lost it at the SubaruWRXFan intro lolz
It's a scarce car and it's kind is slowly disappearing. It offers a pure and "unplugged" driving experience. Thanks for the great review!
Big thanks for the effort you put in on this and other videos. They played a big part in my final car purchase.
Does it come with a Vape pen holster? If not, then Subaru has failed their demographic.
Says the guy that drives a ford escort..
😂😂😂😂 I’m dying
Sad that haters have to associate vaping of all things with a Subaru....Millions of people vape....shocking that it has nothing to do with subaru
@@davetrujillo2836 LOL
I wanna get a wrx because I need something awd and manual transmission, but I don't wanna be a vape God ... Alas...my choices are slim
Any of them after 2006 looks like shit IMO. Would it kill them to make another Blobeye?
No one likes those ethier
No one loved the 15-17 wrx what the fuck are you talking about
Brother, You have given one of the most concise, unbiased, and factual reviews of this car on UA-cam to date.
Both its aesthetics and handling are so characterful and one-of-a-kind that I have no problems saying that, while a Miata or a BRZ or a Cayman or a Type-R or an i30N handle "better", driving the WRX still gives me more joy.
holy crap .. the production value O.o !! wow - sub'ed !
One of the best review of wrx. And also that opening music reminds me of the old subaruwrxfan video
I watched this video about 20 times already 😎 your the review was reason I bought a 2019 wrx base and build it to my liking! Keep up the good work👊🏾
THE VAPE VENT! ROGLMFAO! Best name ever for a sunroof. Your dry sense of humor is definitely beginning to grow on me.
How do you not have more subscribers? I love your channel. You deserve more.
proud 17 owner. Love the way you addressed the review. definitely the best review on the new gen subarus.
I own a 2017, and blind spot monitoring would be nice to have. I agree that the rest is not necessary. But blind spot monitoring is not intrusive. I have driven other cars with it.
Buy the base model. Mine new was $29k out the door.
You got rocked. Buddy got a premium for 26k in 2015 in co springs
does your 2017 rattle like an earthquake like mine did? Cheap, plastic piece of garbage.
I have the 2016 Premium, had it for 3 years from new and absolutely still love driving it everyday.
I still love it, but it has plenty of quirks.
grubism Definitely a quirky car, the clutch damn near destroys my knee.
TheBongoman47
Ive been trying real hard to learn to love the quirks of the stock tune, but man it is real hard.
The honesty of your reviews is what I enjoy, just found your channel recently but seeing you rate cars completely unbiased and straight forward is something I’ve been looking for for a long time
Thanks for the great videos. Spent the last 2 weeks watching the reviews of the cars I was interested in and just went and picked up my 2018 wrx today
+greentjmtl we have extremely low ethanol content and 93 octane in Chicago
Hmm, then that's strange it's still suffering.
+greentjmtl it was a frustrating part of an otherwise really good car
I was looking at the manual for my 2018 WRX and I could've sworn that it recommended 91 Octane, not 93.
Best review I have seen on the WRX. Keep it real and no BS. Honest review while looking back to its roots. Perfect!
I hope savagegeese reads this! You are amazing...top quality stuff..just what UA-cam car reviews should be.
You're like the Maynard James Keenan of car reviews hahaha
exactly what i was thinking lmao

This is the one we've been waiting for👍👏
Man this is a whole new level of a review. Every of channel should take notes. Well done!! Great videography as well ... thank you!
Great review. Can't believe it's coming to the end of this generation already. I remember picking mine up summer of 2014 when dealerships were still low in inventory. Hope the next generation includes some, but not all, new electronic technology at an affordable price.
The 2018 Subaru WRX had an interior equivalent to a 2009-11 Honda Civic Si
At this point Turbowski is a bigger ball tease than dragons in Game of Thrones Season 1
Thanks
Buy the car, keep it stock and sit on it for good resale value like a stock integra or RSX.
Rsxs are dirt cheap where I live
Not enjoying the car to keep it for the future owner is like not fucking your girlfriend to keep her tight for the next guy. Drive the damn car man.
i'm subscribed to dozens of car review channels, and i can honestly say that i get the most excited when i see new content from you. keep up the amazing work!
The WRX is amazing value. The STI is overpriced. You could drop 40k on an STI or get a base wrx for like what? 25k? and add 10K worth of mods and that thing will trash the STI for 5K less
Less reliable
glass transmission, wrx costs more than that and sti costs less than that (before taxes), no warranty, unreliable internals, cool if you wanna gap an sti a few times before your clutch starts to slip...
Big fan of this guy... And his reviews... Subd... He's honest and detailed...
Others dream of having an aventador or a 488, or even a 911. I dream of having a wrx
Halo Fire I did too. Finally made that happen this past June. It's been a ton of fun so far. Simple car, and a great daily driver.
Great dream, me too!
pretty much more realistic/obtainable
Im gonna gonna be living it in a few days once the dealer preps it, I bought a Red 2017 WRX
Lmfao.
4:37 your seat is adjusted so much forward.. I'm guessing taller people won't have that issue with those arm rests...
There is an optional arm rest in the center console that will rise and move forward.
Kevbo75 That’s nice to hear. Options available for people who realise they need that feature!
You also have the Focus RS with 350hp that will smoke an STi in a straight line and around a track,
You are one of the best, if not the best car reviewer in all of UA-cam. I wish I could subscribe 100 times. Keep up the amazing work.
We have a 2012 and are also getting a 2019 love the Rex.
Subaru WRX..For when your almost 40 but want to get thru the snow & have fun without looking like a Boy racer.
TheeJoeyLee lmao no one over the age of 25 drives a wrx
huge false.. for 2015 and up models.
I'm 36, I got a 2011 WRX hatch at 29, then a 2015 WRX at 33 and a bugeye at 35 lol
Nick Beijer
Just saw a middle aged woman and then a middle aged man driving these, two days ago. One was silver and the other was black 😂
That subaruwrxfan troll is fucking epic #neversellout
After all the review videos I've watched on this suB, finally, one actually thats bearable to watch...and well put together..
Also, just bought one. Thanks for the vid!
I must watched this video about 30 times !!! Even tho I own 2019 wrx 😂 great job👊🏾
Legit honest review. I own a 2017 and couldn't agree with you more on all of your comments. Sub'd.
If I buy a WRX do I have to start vaping?
Yes otherwise you will void the warranty of your new car smell ....
Only if you're under 25.
Yes it was it bitch at 76 years old but kinda wanna look groovy.
These engines are new and we have to see how their head gaskets perform over time (subarus are known for head blown gaskets around 130k miles)
To me the car looks great, aggressive but subtle.
cons- they come with summer tires; so, if you get them for winter driving you need to either get a set of winter tires or all-seasons.
infotainment is terrible. laggy, bad Bluetooth connection, most of the apps on it don't work correctly.
suburu interior, feels cheap, lots of plastic, no remote start and they still use the old style keys.
No button to open the trunk, you have to use the key fob or opened from inside.
Horrible rev hang on lower gears
clutch feels heavy.
pros- lots of fun, decent gas milage (depends on how you drive it, it can make a huge difference).
Snow beast (with the proper tires).
car is roomy.
And my personal favorite, its very mechanical, you can hear the engine making noises the transmission feels very mechanical when you shift.
SUBARU BRING BACK THE WRX WAGON!!!
🤢🤮
They didn't sell
Yes please
Unknown User come to the northeast. They are evwrywhere
Best WRX review I've seen & I've looked at over a dozen of them!
I need a car with a nice ass... just like my women haha
Jayyy B - Who can argue with that? ;-)
the whole damn car looks like a Camry with a body kit
krispewkreme hey the new Camry came out after this generation wrx. Who looks like who?
Your videos are so friggin well made they are art, almost poetic.
I can paint brake calipers myself :)
ah11980 god damn 😂😂😂
You are the most savage of geese. That is all.
Also, solid review as always. Continuing to talk about aspects of the car like reliability while cutting through bullshit that others refuse to is something that makes your content highly valuable.
best suabru still is the hawkeye
🤣

Best wrx review I've seen. Love how you put your cars on the lift. The comment about the vape vent is hilarious but true....
I don't get why subaru doesn't sell vapes and vaping supplies. They might as well. Also make sure to include them with the purchase of any "sporty" car in their lineup. I haven't seen one that hasn't been lowered in ages.
hahahaha, smdh
Frany Netflix sells weed now so why not?
lol that's hilarious and awesome!
Same here. I am careful with all my cars though.
2016 STI Owner here...Would love to hear your thoughts on the new 2018 STI
2016 idgaf owner here...
Lmao @ the vape vent comment
I appreciate the thoughtful assessment and sarcasm.
It's no longer called the Impreza WRX/STi.
Just WRX/STi now.
Lol most fans will know that, deep inside we know it's still an Impreza so we don't care.
It just feels better to call it that way.
Honestly this is one of the best reviews I think I've ever seen. How have I not heard of this guy before? Definitely Sub'd!!
