I have owned about 10 Subarus. If you are considering a used one, be sure to do at least 2 things when looking at one. 1. take the oil dip stick out, and smell the oil. If you get any whiff of coolant, walk away. 2. Test drive the car till it gets up to temperature, then drive it a little longer to see if the coolant temperature gets higher than normal range - if it does walk away. You should also look under the car to see if it's leaking oil for older Subarus. Other than those issues Subarus are good cars.

These new FA engines don't have the head gasket issues the previous EJ engines had so most of this advice while not being bad is also not specific to the FA engine in this car. It's something to check for in ANY used car.

problem with used WRX is the clean ones are almost as expensive as a new one, and the modded out and tuned ones should be avoided at all costs...

Pretty much yes, but this one looks well kept with only the
STI OEM exhaust and aftermarket shifter. You still should always have a good mechanic check it out. This
One is nice, and the price reasonable. I would just want it in midnight blue.

True. I'd say it's not bad to buy a modified one if you're planning on modifying it anyway and it's tastefully done also I'd expect things to be wrong and if you know how to work on cars it wouldn't be so bad imo

I’d be nervous buying an even lightly modded WRX. So many kids rice these things out, and who knows what kind of beating the engine, clutch, and brakes have taken? This one looks nice, but I’d still be leery.

It’s a gamble to go used. I got my 17 WRX certified pre owned. A couple months later the clutch poops out on me and had axles seals leaking. It looked fine from the factory and I attributed the stiff clutch to just being a sports car. It wasn’t until I test drove a wrx a few months down the line that I found the clutch was shot. This one he is reviewing has some induction noises which are much louder than stock which leads me to think it has some type of after market air intake/bpv/air filter. Was probably modded and then returned to stock to sell 🤷‍♂️

@@yowadup1000 I believe only a small percentage of WRXs are probably CVTs. Reliability, durability snd longevity would probably depend on how you drive, and if you modded the enginewith high boost/compression, etc. Maybe not bad if you don't thrash and abuse it, but a 6 speed would be preferable, even for me, that would rather have an automatic.

At the end of the day, ALL used cars will need repairs. The biggest thing with a turbo-charged car is who owned it and how it was maintained. I'd personally never buy a WRX or STi used from a dealer. I've looked at 10+ WRX or STi's at dealers and they either needed a ton of work or were way over priced like "The Drake" pointed out. There are plenty of private sellers with good reputations deep in Facebook or Subaru forums. Just takes time and patience.

I ended up buying a 2020 wrx brand new, I’ve seen what others have done through UA-cam and I’ve also seen how they drive these cars. Personally I wouldn’t suggest buying a used wrx or sti. Not unless you want it as a project car. Most people don’t know how to maintain a Subaru wrx or sti properly, the mods are a whole other problem on top of all that. I’ve had my wrx since the 9th, I’ve done a few mods only 1 engine mod, just a boomba bpv, I have a sound system, ceramic window tint, license plate relocation kit, nameless license delete and I’m still waiting for my nameless muffler delete. I don’t plan on modding the motor for a few years, but I’m also keeping the car forever. The only other engine mod needed is a cai and a tune. I’m not interested in power gains, I just want bitchin sound lmao. I’ve had tons of fun working on this car so far, the bpv was a nightmare on the 2020 though. I had to go buy a new vacuum line just to reach the bpv. I’ve got a few other things done to the car but they’re all minor things

Joe, this is nice, with a good price for used, and seems to be in good condition with just the right additions. Many good points with all the comments. If I got an WRX, I would not mind one fixed up just like this, but in midnight blue. With some of the Subarus without the premium stereo, the Rockford Fosgate processor, amp and speaker upgrade is an available OEM accessory. I would get this on the 6 Speed over the CVT, which it harder to find, the opposite for the Corolla and Civic. I would not thrash and abuse it, so the longevity, reliability should not be such a problem, like an STi with many drivers, especially if the boost and compression is molded. Subaru has among the best AWD systems, aside from and durability problems the other negative factor is having replacing all four tires if one needs replacing. But those tires are still good to be used on non AWD cars if you can match them with tires of close tread wear.
The WRX is great for people like me that don't need and want the extra performance and price of the Sti, but wants sporty, but subdued and low key. The STi OEM exhaust and shorter, short throw shifter is perfect. Bomba racing make some nice stuff for the Honda Civics, and other cars. I would also prefer the keyed ignition if available with the options I want, but on the Corolla, it only cones with pushbutton start with the options.
