@@taelee347 yep I don't like how the new one looks, but what really matters is how it drives. @@v8_sami I haven’t had a problem, and I mean that quite literally, however, I have the split/dual screens. I will say, because I’ve got a ‘22, I don’t have wireless CarPlay. That’s probably my only gripe and I’m pretty sure they’ve solved that. When I purchased the vehicle I was test-driving GTI, civic si, Elantra n, Wrx, and brz/86. The way I saw it; si had my favorite interior all the way around (infotainment included), GTI had the worst (only because of their knucklehead infotainment) and the others were all in the same ballpark. I actually had the most fun with the brz, but I just couldn’t make the car work with my daily life (I can only own one car because of my apartment’s parking situation.)

Im gonna tell you what I was told when I was only mildly interested in a VB, go for a test drive. Subaru dealerships in my experience are a lot better to deal with than Hyundai and toyota. If they dont have a TR, test out a limited and justvimagine that car but with better brakes and seats. It took me 5 minutes of driving a premium to realize I HAD to have one as soon as possible. Originally wanted Grey, but ended up getting a WR Blue 23 premium for around 34.5k, and I never impulse buy anything. It's just that good. No issues except a cracked windshield, but that wasn't the car's fault. It's such a usable performance car, with all the modern amenities you want as an enthusiast, and none of the techy garbage you don't. Feels like one of the very few "oldschool" fun car's you can still buy new, but with Android auto/Apple carplay.
The TR trim can only be better than a premium, since the price differential is a lot smaller than if I were to try to upgrade everything on mine to something comparable. TR is a steal. But if you don't want to spend over 40k on a wrx, a limited, or premium with upgraded audio (stock stereo blows, I have it) is still a hell of a good bargain.

Yes. I loved owning a WRX in the past and would buy one again, but I now have dogs/family I need to haul around so I ended up going with the Outback Wilderness (which has the FA24 as well) instead. People's priorities change and unfortunately the number of people who can both afford a brand-new WRX and whose family situation allows for a fun sedan over a more boring/practical hauler-type vehicle is not as large as Subaru would like it to be. I can only afford 1 vehicle, and that vehicle has to be top-of-class in the winter and has to be able to haul people/cargo. Those are non-negotiable. If it's fun on top, it's a slam dunk. If they had offered the WRX as a 6MT wagon or the Outback as a 6MT I 100% would have bought one.

I bought a WRX new in 15. Always wanted one. Sold it in less than a year. Main reason, the timing pull/engine tuning was absolutely terrible. Second reason, the cable linkage for the shifter just sucked. It’s been 10 years, crazy to hear that the shifter still sucks. Maybe Toyota needs to lend them an engine/trans combo. Subaru's USP is being able to make their own engines (boxers) and trans. (both manual and CVT) to cut costs unfortunately! It's tough. I've owned a 2019 series gray WRX, 2019 FK8 Type R, and now a 2023 GRC. The seating position/seats are better in Type R/WRX. The space you get in WRX/Type R area also much better. Having said that, I like the much smaller size and look of the GRC. The engine/transmission like they said is much better in the GRC - it has a soul...charisma. The GRC is a *stiff* daily driver and while the cabin is a little bare and isn't my favorite, the infotainment is significantly better, and I love that it doesn't lag like the Subaru's does. For me to consider a WRX again, they would have to put out a an STI "like" version with a bespoke 6 speed/engine that makes at least 325-350 hp that has better exterior styling, but they're done with that. It would cost too much.

In terms of tuning, the engine/transmission is better in the WRX. Tuners are having serious issues tuning the GRC with engine overheating issues. There are also, engine code issues popping up with the GRC. Tuners like Engine Logics are making the wrx a 10 second car for less than 4.5k.

However, my experience owning one for just six months wasn't ideal due to the lack of steering feel and a light clutch, which made driving feel uninspired, more akin to a typical grocery-getter. Additionally, the plastic cladding and unappealing rear end led me to sell the car. I was in the market for a new car and as a first time manual buyer. Ideally I wanted a hatchback as the overall practicality of it makes sense to me. Additionally, I live in a region where it snows so AWD would be nice. I was looking at the GR chassis WRX/Sti years but those were so hard to find and just the money people wanted I wasn't sure I could justify it. That's before then having to worry about it blowing up due to previous owner(s) negligence. I saw a GR Corolla which didn't look bad in person. However, it just didn't hit the same for me as that old GR chassis even if its a better car overall. Then if I could find a GR Corolla at MSRP, the price was still a bit more than I wanted to spend.
Had this WRX been an evolution of the previous hatchback and it came without the cladding I would've been one of the first ones in line. But I just can't get past the looks of it. Even when you paint match it, the exterior still looks off. I think Subaru missed an opportunity here especially as I keep seeing others also wishing it had been a hatchback. So, contrary to what I just stated and really wanted, I ended up getting the BRZ and I could not be happier with that decision.

  • @boost331

The TR is just too much money. It goes against what the original TR was meant to be. It should be a stripped down, very basic model that is Tuner Ready. Meaning ready to be customized by the owner. Subaru is asking STI money for a regular WRX. Swapping seats, wheels and brakes is not worth an extra $10k. As mentioned in the video the wrx IS NOT A TRACK CAR. So this is all poser junk. With the wrx the premium trim is the way to go. Everything you need, nothing you dont. Do your basic intake, exhaust and tune and it is a great car for far less money that this TR. I dont know who this car is for.

I absolutely love the car overall, with a couple minor exceptions. First, its a Subaru, so interior trim squeaks and rattles, have been able to make most of them go away with silicone lubricant, but a couple persist. Also, the audio upgrade is 100% worth it as the stock stereo sucks. Ive tried my best to adjust the equilizer and bass settings, but its still not great.

I applaud your review of this TR version WRX with an engineering emphasis-as usual you folks have done a fine analysis of the driving characteristics, particularly in reference to ride quality with the revised suspension which I have not seen mentioned elsewhere. I have enjoyed my 20 VA base purchased new and have gotten used to the cladding issues of the VB and am thinking of getting this version in the near future. I want the Recaros, Brembos, suspension and steering upgrades with the fog lights, heated wiper blades and other premium version stuff missing on mine. The reason I got a base originally is because I absolutely did not want a sunroof. I use it for commuting and a bit of sporting driving and since the car is tunable with more displacement and lower boost as stock, there is room for minor tweaking while preserving reliability. I would like it better at 38K but will see how flexible Subaru will be on price. Thanks, as always for another great review.
