All of this was helpful. As a single father going through a divorce after a 27 year marriage, I have found myself here for fashion advice but todays video really hit home and uplifted my day. The final message was key! THANK YOU!

I liked the whole video. Totally agree on moving away from toxic people, standing up for yourself, having a get up and started in the morning routine (mine is walking to Starbucks) and being positive/proactive about your life. I have been let go from positions and ended up having the best year of my life professionally at 55 years old, where I was one of the oldest in the company. Keep up the good!

Great advice! The first and BEST thing anyone can do for themselves is remove toxic people from their lives. It costs nothing but the rewards you’ll gain are less stress, less drama, less confrontation. This will improve your health, peace of mind, and strengthen the relationships you do value.

As a former airline employee, I carried a backpack to work everyday with extra cold weather gear, rain gear, gloves, eye and hearing protection, etc. As for all the hanging straps, which drove me crazy, I simply used some black hockey tape and folded the straps into little bundles. Worked very well!
Now that I am retired, and traveling more, I have replaced the backpack, with a more stylish and age appropriate canvas satchel. It can handle a lot of travel essentials, fits under the airline seat, and can be carried like a briefcase, or with a shoulder strap. It's rugged, but classy looking. All the best guys!

I've just by chance come across your channel today and subscribed. I'm 50 and struggling with motivation, self esteem, style (I cringe at some of the fashion I've subjected myself and others to) etc. Your videos are a much needed breath of fresh air!

That was one of your better videos. I feel like most of us probably know these things but putting it all together in this video is helpful. Sometimes we just need to hear someone say it.
I appreciate what you do and the positive attitude you always have. I know that's probably challenging some days. Keep striving.

Toxic people bring us down slowly, insidiously. Someone once said, "if you want to know who you are, look at the 5 people you spend the most time with..." If those people are negative and toxic, there's a good chance that...well, you know.
Be the one who, instead of complaining about some minor thing, asks the person serving your coffee or dinner how they're doing. Be nice. #dontbeadouche

Timely video for me. We've just moved into a new place and are due to have wardrobes (closets for you US people!) fitted soon. There's nothing like a house move and having to make the most of space to focus on having a clear out. To be fair, I do wear a lot of my clothes but I probably don't need as many as I have. Getting my other half to throw things out (not just clothes, but anything) is a whole different issue though!

I disagree about the duplicates, especially the kitchen example. As a single guy I run my dishwasher ever 4 days or so. Several items such as spatula's, spoons and thongs I have several duplicates of since it's either that or clean them by hand in between. Same with basic clothes such as white dress shirt. And with socks having several identical pairs worn in rotation tends to reduce waste. If one sock of a unique pair gets worn out (and it's always one) the other goes into the bin too. With my identical socks many can get worn out and it's not until 1 have only 1 left that I have to bin it.

John, you always provide insightful videos. As an older guy, I have learned and have practiced the things you discussed. Also, when people reach retirement from work, let it go. Don’t look back or reach back. Move onto the new phase in life. Don’t hold onto work stuff.
Nice backpack. But the only backpack I would ever use is a suit case type like the “Tortuga” travel backpacks. Or a backpack for hiking. I was a kid in the 1960’s and a teen in the 1970’s. I didn’t grow up in the school backpack era. We had lockers at school. So to me backpacks are for kids. I have always preferred a briefcase of some sort. I do however see the utility. But to each his own.

@@40OverFashion My pleasure. I only came upon your channel a couple of months ago. Appreciate your guidance for older men.
I use to dress well; a long, long time ago. Custom shirts with monograms, tailored clothes, and the latest styles. But 30+ years ago got married and became an off the shelf discount shopper. Costco and such have been my go to. But I never dressed sloppy, and I have always been coordinated and organized. Time to get back to what I know. Thank you for your perspectives.

I have a stockpile of old glass cookware, plastic storage items, pots, and kitchen utensils I've collected for donation. I still have clothes in my closet I haven't worn in decades that are scheduled for donation also. Most I can still wear but since I don't go to as many social events, I figured what's the point? Plus they need to be dry cleaned and since I haven't had the need for that service in forever, I wouldn't even know where to begin to find a reliable one. Most of the people I associate with now, don't use them.

Great video John. Sometimes it’s tough to look inward (or in the closet) to see where we could be doing a little better to shed habits or clothing that no longer work for us. That said, have you or could you do a video on wardrobe “Analysis Paralysis” ? You know, when you have a fair amount of clothing choices that work well w/ each other yet you can’t make a decision on what to wear. Happens to me quite a bit and it’s starting to bug. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!

Thanks, John! I too have a closet with stuff that needs to go... due to weight gain. I also know that once my mindset is 100% and I lose the weight again, well, I'll want to go pick out some new shirts! ( Which I just had to do because I'm taking a trip for biz to LV this Thursday and need something that will fit!! ) I also noticed the old T-shirts that I wear daily ( benefit of working for yourself and inside 90% of the time, or is it? ) needed to be replaced due to wear and tear, so I picked up some nice new solid Tee's to wear also. I'll be de-cluttering my closet when I return from Vegas!! #LEGEND

Regarding duplicate items (like spatulas): My wife has several friends who like to get her/us kitschy gifts. One just brought over a cutesy spatula that is slightly less functional than the four we already have. Unfortunately, I can't throw out my wife's duplicate items. Particularly the substandard ones that were gifts.
Regarding toxic girlfriends/boyfriends: Learn how to be happily single. If you master that, you will never stay in a relationship with a toxic girlfriend/boyfriend. As soon as you realize that being single is better than being with that person, you'll quickly jettison them. It's the people who are unhappily single who get in the most trouble. They may realize how miserable their current relationship is … but to them, it's better than being single.
