Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know that my new book, Things That Matter, is finally here. I put my heart into it, and I can’t wait to share it with you. You can pick up a copy at www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/676394/things-that-matter-by-joshua-becker/
When I was in 8th grade many, many years ago, my English teacher wore only black clothes with accessories in winter, and white with same the rest of the year. She always looked fantastic, and no one thought anything about her fashion choices. She was way before her time!
When I was a sophomore in high school I had a typing teacher that only wore black everyday, until unexpectedly she wore a red dress to school. The next day we had a substitute, and the regular teacher never returned to her job. We never knew whether she had gotten a new job somewhere else, or had died, or had cracked up and just could not function anymore. I am suspicious that people who never vary their wardrobes, no matter how chic they look, are just too gridlocked in some mental way. Limiting one's color palette isn't very imaginative.
@@elizabethrichards2085 Why change something that works perfectly? After many years I finally found out which colors look best on me (and which don't work at all) and I'm definitely done with experimenting. No use in wasting more time and money.
1. Start easy - remove clothes that are stained, ripped, faded (1:02) 2. Remove seasonal items from your closet (1:19) 3. Get rid of clothes that don't fit - if you're in between sizes, consider keeping both (1:39) 4. Reduce your need for additional accessories (2:10) 5. Consider the idea of "one" - if one can be enough, embrace it (2:40) 6. Re-assess current trends (3:09) 7. Physically handle every item (3:42) 8. If all else fails, pick a number - find [10] things you can get rid of (4:11) 9. Experiment with less (4:39)
I decluttered my closet 4 years ago, I actually decluttered the whole house. It’s amazing how easy it is to dress in the morning when you own less when your closet has all your favorite clothing. I donated all my costume jewelry, and only kept my fine jewelry. Purses, scarves, belts also donated.. I love my closet, and I am very mindful now what I buy and bring home. I can’t imagine living any other way.
Someone once told me she lives buy the code of if I buy a new piece something has to go ! Thought that was a good point. Don't know if I can do that.myself. haha
Number 10: chose a favorite color combination and stick to it. It will be easier to mix and match, creating dozens of outfits from a few pieces, and easier to replace items when necessary.
It changed my life to stick to my colorpalet and giving away a lot of my clothes. Until about 6 years ago I would buy new clothes thinking I had nothing to wear. No more. Saves me so much money and no more frustrations. Better for environment too. I rarely buy something new. When I go buy something I know what I need. Bought one sweater and a few socks this winter and that was it. This spring and summer I do not need anything at all. I kind of capsule now. Wearing a limited amount of clothes and not replacing when not wearable anymore.
I had over 200 items hanging in my closet. I bought new hangers. Set of 50. My new limit. And turning around hangers of things I'm really wearing! So I'll know what to get rid of next time.
I had someone comment recently when seeing my closet, where do you keep the rest of your clothes? I replied, this is all of my clothes and I’ve just done laundry so it’s all here. The puzzled look was priceless. Yes, do much easier to get ready. Plus with lots of space in between clothes, less wrinkling and no ironing. Steve Jobs wore the same thing everyday. Said it cleared his mind of that one decision every day so he could think about other things. As I’m typing this on one of those other things, an iPhone, I’d say Steve did pretty good at thinking less about clothes and on more important pursuits.
Most of all I appreciate Joshua’s presentation. He knows what he is going to say when he starts out, and he speaks well. I am amused and annoyed by those “declutter” videos where the speech is so cluttered with mushy language and repetitions that I can’t watch. This makes me believe Joshua knows what he’s doing in the realm of eliminating the unnecessary. I used to have 19 pair of black pants; I only have 13 now. Getting better!
And/or clutter their videos with unnecessary, annoying and distracting muzak running in the background, apparently for added production value, 'atmosphere'. No. It only adds noise (pollution) and makes the information, for some of us, harder to process. Thanks for a non-cluttered, clean video presentation mr. Becker.
I hear you, and agree. But I'm also glad that those with a different presentation style are out there, doing their thing. My bubbly, stimulation-happy friend is getting so much out of another well-known minimalist UA-camr and her more effusive style. I love that there is something for everyone out there. : )
@@aMoodWithaView Yep I go between three as they all have something to offer even if it’s something small as there seems to be more than one way to get there.
Excellent PRACTICAL advice. Thank you, Joshua. I was reminded of Isabella Rossellini (in the U.S. she may be best known as a model and actress) and of how she would wear a black blazer, white t-shirt, black pants, white socks and black shoes---the shoes being from the men's section. In her book "Some of Me" Ms. Rossellini wrote about learning that way of dressing from her boss who wore essentially the same thing all the time though with some differences in materials or shade. Ms. Rossellini also said, "My closet is just a certain size, and I don't intend to make it bigger".
Excellent advice. I reduced my closet significantly and still found that there were clothes that I wasn't wearing. One good test is to look at what you pack for a week away; for me, these clothes tend to be my favorite clothes. The other clothes that I didn't choose are not my favorite, and these clothes need to be reconsidered. I try to donate whatever I am not wearing. Someone else should enjoy these clothes. Many thanks for another great video!
Donated 70% of my clothes and still struggling with organising... I do wear all I have and I even gave away part of it that I wore. I haven't had a dryer until recently though and I can donate more now but I can't decide what. I have two dogs and every time I go out with them I'm dirty top to buttom and I can't handle with very few combinations but still... Forgot about packing... If I pack for 7 days it means that I go to the seaside and clothes I use there are not the same I wear while home. Never travelled anywhere else for more then 2 days. So, packing isn't solution for me.
@@Hugo_Mali Thanks for responding to my comment. I also have a dog whom I walk at least twice a day. I have pants and a jacket that I wear specifically for my walks with her. I wear these clothes first thing in the morning when we go for our first walk; I then change into my clothes for work. When I get home, I put on the dog walking pants again and wear them until bedtime. This has helped cut down on laundry as these clothes get and stay dirty for the week before washing on the weekend. I also have a clothes tree (a coat rack) in my bedroom, and I hang the dog walking clothes on the clothes tree during the day. The rest of my clothes are in the closet and a dresser. I keep only what will fit in the closet and dresser. I try to notice what I am not favoring as well. Again, thanks for replying; I enjoyed thinking about your comment.
@@Hugo_Mali though my suggestion comes from experience, it also comes from a purpose. When each of my parents died, I spent a week in making each trip. Packing meant I had to plan for the occasion and for the travel time, as well as the other things that might need to be done (thankfully my sister and my brother had already taken care of most of the planning). These trips had a purpose. But you don't have to visualize such a trip to try packing for a week; instead visualize a trip to anywhere you ever wanted to go. Across the country or on another continent, you would have to consider climate and activities you love or at least would like to try. Don't forget to think about arrangements for your dogs; do they stay or do you take them along? Depending on where you live, you might want an evacuation plan for weather events or natural disasters to include a backpack of necessities in your trunk.
Wonderful advice!! I’ve recently lost 50 lbs, so it has been a great time to cull my closet. I work from home now, so I’ve only purchased a few new items- jeans, some leggings, a few dresses, and about 12 tops. My goal is to buy zero clothing for the rest of the year (except for a good denim jacket). I think I’m going to find that I love a simplified wardrobe 🥰
@@create-hx7pe I had a health scare (pre-diabetic), so I went low carb and almost no sugar. I’m not keto. Giving up sugar was easy because I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. I still eat carbs, but they’re not my main course AND my side dish. I’m just more mindful because moderation is key. I also don’t eat out much, and cooking from home has made a huge difference because I control what goes into my food. You can do it!! Just make small, sustainable changes.
I found myself nodding to everything you just said. 😆😁 This video just came at the right time. Thank you again for all your tips in living a simple and cutter-free life, Joshua! Always appreciate it. 👍
My closet (in Germany) is still totaly full - so thank you for the great tipps! I want to add an idea: When I pack my suitcase, I always think, that these are the clothes I really like. So maybe try to pack a (big) suitcase three times: One for summer vacation, one for winter and one for transition season. Your closet ist still filled without all that suitcase clothes? Maybe you don't really need them... Thank you Joshua for your convincing and conclusive Videos 👍🏼
I narrowed my wardrobe palette to 2-3 colors that looked the best on me and that went well with each other. I purged all of my other clothing items. It made my closet much more visually inviting and it’s easier to put together an outfit since everything can mix and match. Also less stressful shopping since I only buy clothing and accessories in those 2-3 colors.
This is an excellent suggestion. I also limit my color palette to grey, blue, purple and pink, all in cool tones, with the vast majority of my wardrobe being grey. This still gives me plenty of color options but everything goes together and they are my favorite and most flattering colors.
Interesting. Mine usually casual clothes basic shirts/singlets/sweaters and jeans/shorts. Informal clothes nicer neutral blouse and grey trouser with simple heel. Formal black dress or depending on season lighter dress hit a little above the knee since I am short 😄. I need try my dresses see if any fit if don't going to donate them no point keeping them if they don't fit.
I did this intuitively 15 years ago. And then i started following some dressing program that said I should be wearing all sorts of other colors. It was fun at first. After 3 years, I felt so overburdened by the breadth of my wardrobe options. I decided I'm the best authority for what is right for me. My colors today are different than 15 years ago. I figured I must be needing those colors in my life right now. (black, dark purple, dark teal, and occasionally a deep pink)
New subscriber here. Wish I had seen your videos last month haha. I just ordered a lot of containers to get everything organized ... Oh boy ! Lots of small ones and I just want to say you are right. I have become an online shopaholic !! Everytime, I get rid of two or three boxes in comes 3 more. Yikes, I am going to stop watching TV. Haha ! My husband has dementia and I think I am stress shopping and I don't go out because of the covid thing. I was going to start this week to organize and get rid of a lot of things I had for awhile and I know no one else will care for, as I do. My family lives 700 miles away and I have no kids of my own, why I need these things, I don't know. I love pretty things but, know when I am gone someone else would be glad they didn't have to deal with it all. They won't need or want 95% of these things. Time to clean out and stop this. Thanks !
Sounds like you are having a rough time. Maybe you could focus on finding something positive to add to your life. It is so very hard when a loved one has dementia.
WOW! I'm even a better minimalist than Joshua! 😅 I decided to put nothing under my bed. I intenionally got rid of my previous bed with a container underneath because I decided I didn't need it: I don't want anything under my bed, to let energy flow and for a better and easier cleaning. And I live in a flat, which is very small comparing to USA houses! 😅 No garage, no basement. 70 mq and it's two of us, fast to clean and to keep clutter free🎉🎉🎉 I enjoy your video very much. Once you said you used to be a Pastor, I can see that, but I don't mind your way of speaking, it's very calming and conforting. Love from Rome, Italy! ❤
I remember being pregnant with my twins and having a lovely but decent capsule wardrobe the last four months. It was so easy. Flash forward 25 years and I’ve downsized everything including the work wardrobe as a lawyer. I simplified my jewelry scarves and purses. My 15 year old niece got a huge box including makeup and skincare items as well. I simplified everything. I still have way too much but I know what my next few rounds will probably look like. The rule of thumb I’ve learned is pretend you are going on vacation to a nice resort for ten days. What would you pack ???? I even simplified my linens.
I have to wear a uniform to work every day so that makes it easy to choose clothes im the morning. I wear mostly purple clothing, so I that keeps more wardrobe simple. I even keep my socks simple. I have black socks for work and white for other days. By doing all of this, it makes my mornings so much easier, which is wonderful since I am most definitely not a morning person!
I like that you keep on stressing to donate the removed items. One problem that I have is that it is often difficult to buy the exact same item again once it wears out (producers just keep on changing their products). If I like an item, I therefore end up buying several copies, just because of this issue.
I would also recommend getting rid of items that require complicated care. For example, I don‘t iron. But I realize that it depends on your job to an extent whether you can get away with that. 😊
I bought wooden hangers and donated all the plastic ones. I realized I didn’t have quite enough and contemplated buying more, until I channeled my “inner Joshua”. I thought “no, you have enough hangers and will declutter clothes to accommodate the hangers”; and that’s what I did!
It took me about 3 years to get from a packed walk in closet to what I currently have.... between 30 and 40 total items for a year round wardrobe. I need to replace a few that are wearing out, but am looking to do that with thrifted higher quality items.
How to declutter fast! The only decluttering rule I live by-the only one that works for me anyway-is to instantly put all of your items into a 'get-rid' pile, such as your clothes, jewelry, home accessories, et cetra, with an adamant mindset that you are about to rid of them all, only, you retrieve the items from the pile that you absolutely need or truly want to keep. This technique has helped me to sell or donate my things in great abundance than if I just spooled through my wardrobe and picked out only a couple of items. Another way to rid of your possessions is to look at an item and ask yourself, "If this were displayed in a store today, would I purchase it?" If the answer is no, get rid of it. I hope this helps!
I keep it simple stupid, every season I look at every article of clothing, shoes or anything. I look to see if it fits my style and asthetic. My style has changed since I'm 40. And I make decisions wisely not on impulse. 😃🤓
This is just the simple, straightforward way to tackle our obsession with having so many clothing options. No none needs more then 2 of anything other than underwear and socks. I’m inspired to go tackle my bedroom closet and dresser right now. Thanks for the gentle encouragement and honesty to energize me to do this right away, without delay 🎉❤
@@Fire-QueenI have 2 pair of black pants, and a pair if Black Jean's, I wear the black pants for two days in a row, you don't need to wash after 1 wear, unless you spill something on them. I only wash at the weekends.
Did my closet purge last Christmas, got rid of clothes and shoes that were worn out and donated some. Plus found a new pair of running shoes and socks that I didn't realize having. Also, since i use suit and tie for work, i did a nice polish on my formal shoes and realized I didn't have to buy more.
I’ve just filled a bag of close to donate, I’ve put of doing this for years and truthfully now they’ve gone could careless so now i have to tackle more you advice is going to be very helpful, because i know I’ll struggle, I’ve got to be honest I’ve just started to watch your channel and you give some cracking advice Thankyou x clothes 😁
I think you’ve just inspired me! After loss of mom, I feel I cling to my clothes and hers! Now my closet cannot be even walked into. Today you and this video are my inspiration to make my closet a happier place
I'm sorry about your Mother and I can understand you wanting to keep her near by holding on to her clothes. When our Mother died Daddy went ahead and sorted her belongings by himself (he didn't tell us until afterwards). He kept handbags, scarfs and gloves - only a small amount. In four weeks our niece gets married - Daddy and Mammy's first grandchild to do so. I will be using her favourite handbag so she'll be with us. Please be kind to yourself and take your time. Just a few things will make a difference I'm sure. xxx
Great video Joshua. I have lots of clothes that don’t fit and I need to get rid of after all - the sight of looking at things your have paid money for, that don’t fit, just makes you feel worse and is a negative reminder of money spent.
I have been wondering how to tackle this for about a week. This video has come along at the right time so will get started on what I imagine will be a huge task. Loving all the comments btw. Huge help to come to these for encouragement and help.
I have been reducing my clothing for a while, but find I have to wash way more often. Especially those things for which I only have one. :( Requires a lot more planning for me.
@@zeldamorgan9260 I have enough to get me through the week plus 3. That’s 10 outfits that I love that I also feel good in. I do wash day on Monday and have been doing this for over 2 years now. It took me a bit to figure out the amount of clothing that I needed, as I have no hang dry almost everything and it takes a couple of days for everything to dry. Someone who can dry their clothes in the dryer could possibly get by with less, as my husband does.
This is an excellent video. I’d add that there is power in letting go of the old big sizes of clothes once you’ve lost weight - otherwise a corner of your mind is expecting to gain weight back again to use those clothes. Also, my huge decluttering when we downsized led to big weight loss for both me & my husband. For us, there was a link between excess in our bodies and in our homes.
I can certainly see myself throwing out stuff that became too big. My problem is that I can't bring myself to get rid of clothes I would like to fit into again but I'm having a hard time losing the weight. It's kinda like if I were to throw them out, then (like always when you throw something out) I'd need them again and suddenly the weight loss would come easy. But I can't bring myself to throw them out because of exactly that... idk. What did you do with the too small clothes before you lost the weight? I'm assuming you had some that you'd grown too big for over time. Did you throw it out? Did you keep it for motivation?
@@TheFeldhamster I’d been torturing myself with a few too-small clothes in my cupboard and that never motivated me to lose an ounce! I did let go of those things and not going to lie, it was hard. It’s a bit hard to explain but when I let go of the things that didn’t fit, and started taking a pride in my appearance despite my size, (whatever my size, I deserve to feel nice and look good) then I had the self-care and belief to finally get to it with losing weight. I was overweight for a long time so there weren’t many things that I probably would have worn anyway, but the expensive things I’d once loved were hard to let go of for sure. I can only say it worked for me. Good luck!
Posies blessings I used to manage a charity / thrift shop and I know that good quality, fashionable garments in bigger sizes are always needed and greatly appreciated.
Could you make a video on down sizing on old family pictures. What questions should I be asking myself when tackling this very difficult task? Pictures now a days is easy because, they are on our phones. Should I just keep 2 or 3 of every event or is that, not enough? So hard please help. Your videos have always helped me in one way or another and I truly thank you because although I’m not a total minimalist everything I kept I use on a weekly basis. I feel so much better and way less stress by not having things stored way. Have a great year.
Omg...yes..I am struggling with photos also. The format has changed so many times just in my lifetime..tiny black/white snaps, paper photos, slides(50s/60s), movies, videos, dvds.and now phones...🤪 I have family photos going back 150 years...some huge in big frames. I know who most are in pics..but not all...why did people NOT put names on them? Actually 70s to 90s photos can be reduced down because we took more than one pic..in case someone "blinked" And I never took a scene pic without a person in it. Have done a gallery style display in stairwell area...incl 50s mirrors, a couple of grand plates, flying ducks and flying kookaburras and a couple of paintings..it does look eclectic...opposite wall balances it by leaving it blank. Sorting loose ones by dividing according to decade in those photo boxes..15 boxes in a larger box. Will give away some to distant family "branches" I'm not putting anything in a "cloud"...how long before that idea is superseded? 🙄👍🇦🇺
If you don't mind me chiming in....I have been scanning all my old family photos then made one real photo album with JUST my favorites and passing the rest of the originals on to my kids. For events I only save a few that best represent the occasion. And of course there is no point in keeping blurry or bad photos at all. Many of the scanned photos will be in photo books I create using Shutterfly! I love them so much!
If you have pictures you can pass on to other family member, maybe they would like them ! Get a usb card and take pictures with your phone or tablet and then you will still have the pictures digitally .
@@oneheart19 Thank you. Your right now that I think of it, my children have only have the newer events with they’re kids. It might be nice for them to have some of the old pictures when they were young. Have a great day
I never buy anything white because our well water turns the laundry orange! So, instead of spending thousands of dollars on water treatment and maintenance, I just buy dark, mainly black clothes! Keeps it simple and easy, plus, everything mixes and matches!
Thank you for such a clear cut and concise solution to declutterring! Amazed at how few words can do the trick, which ladies on other channels spent hours on explaining ! What a relief .. a BIG thank you again 🙏💕
ok Joshua, it's January 15th, I'm going to try your experiment and put 1/2 my clothing away for the rest of the month. Actually on the 1st I did the backward hangar experiment and think only half are turned forward so maybe I'll just keep the forward hanging...but I'll make sure it's only half. Fun! Excited to try it!I will also halve my drawers.👏

I have been on the decluttering path since 2019. It has been very freeing, and even helped me drop a lot of weight last year, despite all the crazy things going on in the world and in my life. Currently, my spouse has just started the path of letting things go. I had given over the largest closet to just his things because he is a saver and has stuff he can still fit into from high school....which was in the 1970s...things I would prefer he did not wear in public, if you know what I mean...: ) Thanks, Mr. Becker, for encouraging us all to live with less so we can do more living. God bless.
I have a hard time with thinning out clothes. Here’s part of the reason. My family of origin was 5 females and 2 males. We lived in a house with plenty of closets, but they were all jam packed. Our mother was fashionable , and preferred that her 4 daughters follow suit. I hated it. Not only did our schools have a dress code, but our mom did too. She would not let us out of the house until we were properly dressed and coiffed. It was stifling. She was so difficult to please, but i did the best I could to escape the house. I never bought in to the “if you look good you’ll feel good”. If I balked, she would say “just put on a little rouge. You’ll feel better.” Others saw humor, I saw criticism and emotional neglect. Now, I rid my small house of clothing about once a month. Either to a thrift shop or the landfill. I’m getting there.
I was a tomboy my mother wasn’t. To this day at 92 she will criticize my hair/dress. I put 1200 miles between us at 18. If your parents ruined your life as a kid shame on them. If they are still ruining your life as an adult shame on you. It takes though a lot of work!! 🥰
@@Dbb27 there's nothing wrong with being a tomboy. And I agree that a bit of rouge or lipstick won't deal with hurt feelings. I would say, however, that firmly guiding a child towards leaving the house looking suitable for the public is a far cry from "ruining your life", or something like "child abuse" (I know you didn't say that word). I'm rather a "wash 'n' go" type myself, but I have been at gatherings where young girls with lovely long hair looked like they just rolled out of bed- didn't comb or brush; and probably not the day before, either ("rats' nests"forming, as my grandma would have said), and their clothing wasn't fresh and clean, either; to say the least. That was before COVID, and no- no homelessness, nor mental health issue situation. And that's just sad. It's easy to go "don't care". I know- I look back to what I used to wear to work sometimes, and wonder what I was thinking (I wasn't thinking anything, that's probably what!). Plus, I know people who were passed over when it came to promotions on account of their outward appearance. Moms training you to look presentable is not a bad thing. Overdoing it might be, of course. But so is the opposite.
When you declutter clothes and want to donate them, preferably declutter at the beginning of each season. Nobody needs winter coats in spring and summer. The donation center will just chuck them in the landfill if they even accept them. Donate at the beginning or at least IN the season and people will actually be glad to receive those clothes. Win-win, you'll have an easier time to part with those clothes because you know they'll be appreciated (this is a big thing for me, I hate to trash things that are still perfectly good) and the people who actually need them will be happy. Same goes for other things, eg. kid's toys - best time to donate is just before Christmas, gardening tools or outdoor furniture are best donated in spring / early summer, skiing equipment in winter, etc.
The best tips to declutter clothes and other accessories. Great solutions!!! I'll definitely try some of them. Thank you so much!!! 🙏🏿💯🏆🌏🌱🍀🐞💫🌞👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿🎉👏🏿
Thank you so much for the inspiration. I really needed this. I’ve been holding onto things in my closet that I haven’t worn in years. Even though they fit me they no longer suit my lifestyle. I feel like my closet has transformed from a cluttered mess to a color and seasonal coded breath of fresh air! Suddenly I have more to wear than when I did before the clean out. It also feels awesome to give the stuff away. So many people are in need. Thank you 🙏.
Love this video and the message. And the most important piece of advice is probably just to buy less. I noticed that with more empty space in my closet I started buying more again so I really had to deal with the real problem which was more about the buying than the re-organizing and getting rid of items. Thanks Joshua 😊
In our rental house, I have 4 shelves for clothes and have greatly minimised & organised what I need: 1- black active shirts/ black shorts/socks + smalls (all shirts and shirts the same), 2- work shirts/jeans, 3- winter shirts/jumpers, 4- yard work clothes. My wife's clothes are overflowing and I hope one day she will join me in minimalism, but it's not easy!
Great tips and ideas. I put a hanging rail in my room and just filled that with things i wear. Now even it needs decluttering. Ive worn the same black and white adidas trainers all thru autumn and up to now.
I just did a quick run of the closet and removed around 12 pieces for the donation bin. I don't know y I kept those things. I will do the same this weekend too. Feels so much better in the closet already.
Thank You! I decluttered constantly & you have a few new ideas. I have a one year box for things I might want to keep. I usually take out a few & get rid of the rest.
I have already begun the process of decluttering clothes but I wasn't able to continue during the week due to having a full schedule and for me finding the time is the hardest thing about decluttering.
Organizers will advise you to set your alarm clock for 5 or 10 minutes and stop when the alarm goes off. Certainly you have that much time in a day, or every other day. Then if you want to keep going, of course you can. You'll be surprised how the little bits of time add up and your project gets done.
@@brg2743 Thanks for the tips. I prefer to do things all at once though and I find getting uninterrupted time works better for me for decluttering when I don't have other things to deal with. I did decluttering for a few hours on a Sunday but during the week days I don't even have time to stop to eat. 😞 Doing a little bit at a time is what I intend to do.
it's easy to get overwhelmed. hang in there. it is a process and takes time. try a timer for 5-10 minutes. what worked for me when I started was to take 1-3 things out every day, then 1 thing every time I went out. it does get easier as you see your space open up. now it's one in, 2 out. it really keep me in check!
@@pennynickels5216 I haven't managed to declutter every day because I'm only home on the weekends. So I end up having a tonne of housework and everything else to do then. It is overwhelming sorting through 4 decades worth of stuff! I'm in a small apartment so I don't have space leaving things out. Doing it in small chunks seems manageable because it's rare to get large chunks of free time. I have so much to do! 😭
These are great tips! I am in between sizes so I am keeping both. I gave away a lot of accessories and I sold quite a few. I am not getting anymore at this time! I do love scarves! That is a weakness, but I will go through and give away some! I try to stay away from trendy clothes that will go out of style quickly! Great video!!! I just purchased 144 wooden hangers and decided that's all I get for hanging space in my closet going forward. If I fill them up, something has to go before purchasing anything else. With any luck I can pair it down to less, but honestly my closet is just giving me anxiety vs. joy these days, I always end up wearing the same ol joggers & t instead of putting the effort in cause there's just too much stuff. My mom's the same size and loves when I go through my closet cause she rarely shops and always jokes she'd be naked if it wasn't for me. lol I can't wait to see the finished product, my clothes and I need some breathing room!
Everytime I see those minimized closets I wonder where all there clothes are? If you remove off season clothing it's still in a closet, drawer box or somewhere. We have very changeable weather so I like a variety of weights of clothing. I love having a closet full of clothing I will actually wear but don't like having clothes I won't wear again. Good video.
Every day i hang up a bag to donate. (The same bag) So when i go through the washing basket, closet I add to it daily. With my two kids *1yo and 5yo and me since losing weight after last pregnancy I can easily add to the bag daily and it's not so overwhelming or time consuming. 💃☕
Are used to have so many clothes it was absolutely ridiculous. I was always keeping clothes cause I figured that I would be able to wear them someday. Or I thought I paid good money for it so I should wear it. Finally I just gave up and got rid of over half of what I had. And the funny thing is I do not miss any of it. It's amazing how much you can live without.
Thank you for your video. This is the final, (and if I’m honest) avoided decluttering task I have to do. I have a full wardrobe of clothes, shoes and assessories, plus more in suitcases and bags under beds and spare room drawers, that for some reason, I struggle to give away. I shall follow your step by step guide today. Blessings to you and your family. 🙏
Personally I love the idea of picking a number…to put back in the wardrobe. Recently I took everything out and just put back the 10 favourite items. I filled in the gaps with a few more favourite items. Now I wear and wear these favourites without guilt (as I can’t see the other items I didn’t put back) and will ‘wear them out’ but that’s ok.
Am sure this has been asked before… the ideas sound wonderful, and when single so easy to do. Now married, with kids, and climate changes making days and nights more and more unpredictable I find myself dressing for 2 seasons a day, and various other throughout the week. How does one manage ‘less’ when faced with such a variety of weather and ppl in the household to manage too? 😟
I have 35 reversible skirts, so 70 patterns I can wear. Made in a fair trade factory in Rajasthan, sold by an independent woman in the south of England. Some are above the knee, some on the knee. The waistbands are poppers, so they always fit. I have a strict rotation system so I wear them all and I love them all!
Im decluttering as reflection of closing the door of old chapters of my life. i was required to wear dresses before as part of my 1st job. Changing companies & line of work, I no longer needed these skirts. What I need are slacks & jeans. I was holding on to these clothes for 10 yrs because they were expensive when I bought them in that timeline. I realized I dont need these skirts anymore.not wearing them for work. I have to let them go. Embrace the new stage of life & say goodbye to the old chapters of my life.
I have a large master walk in closet, with a small amount of clothing, my husband too doesn’t have a lot of clothing . I just had a hip replacement, and I hired someone to clean my home while recovering, and I actually felt a little embarrassed when she was cleaning the hardwood floors in my closet with all the empty space… 😂
Hi Josua, would it be possible to do the same video but for books? I have so many interesting books . Most of them I read. But it hurts to get rid of them. Sometimes nice too to re-open a nice book and re read passages. Many thanks.
Yea Joshua - that was a fun - even hilarious video - so many good ideas - I love the one idea - I have one cardigan - just bought last year! (Grampa's sweater- named by myself) and one "Christmas ugly sweater" - purchased ten years ago - for a Christmas Party - maybe it's time to lose that one. Thanks so much - I laughed alot- being from Canada you need sweaters - but only enough. Mennonite's have published books in Canada about having enough. I began to think about a timeless wardrobe about 40 years ago in my early 30's. Mountain Equipment Co-op (recently sold to a group in California) led the way. It's only common sense - eh? Cheers.
I've found that when I was working I was much better at having a few standard pieces & mixing /matching for different looks. I think now I've just gotten lazy. But when my primary wardrobe was business I needed less "in case items" because I already had them.
This is most difficult for me in decluttering. I have loads of clothing and love most of them. Since my mid 20s (I am 44 now) i have roughly the same size. Trends aren't really my thing and I take good care of my clothing. I always buy cotton or other natural fabrics and many outfits last extremely long. My closets are bursting from it but in some i can't bring myself to get rid of things that are still nice and fit me well. Sometimes I get compliments for a skirt I have had for over 20 year. And I keep buying new stuff...Ergo: I struggle with this because I would like a wardrobe closet displayed in the video. With accessories I have managed to only have a capsule collection that I love and wear almost everyday. Any tips for breaking the cycle in clothing? It's not a world problem and I am fortunate to be able to buy clothing in the first place but still I would like to own less. Also buying stuff and especially clothing is bad for the environment.
It sounds like a first good step would be to stop purchasing new clothes when you already have much more than you need. Perhaps deciding on a better use for that money would help to develop a new habit. Pay off any debt, put it against your mortgage, save as much as you can, and share as much as you can with worthwhile charities. Sell or give away all of the clothes that you don't love, and a lot of the ones that you do still like to help move you towards your goal of owning less. Lots of women would be so blessed to receive some of your excess! Would love to hear about your progress. 🙂
@@karenneiman856 thank you Karen for your great tips! I don't have any debt and I have been saving for a house for over 15 years since my divorce. It's very hard however to purchase an affordable house right now due to shortage of houses in my area. So even though I have saved quite a lot, purchasing my own house seems like a far away dream at the moment. Maybe because this saving goal seems a bit useless these days I have been less strict in saving lately. But apart from clothing I live a quite simple life and also my partner and children are not big spenders. So clothing is my only spending sin so to say. But I will take up on your advice and for example sell or preferably donate clothing. I have tried a no buy year several years in a row but usually after March I fail.. I will try again:)
@@simini1837 Maybe a no buy year is too extreme and more like a punishment. Be gentle with yourself. I find it is like peeling an onion and more comfortable and sustainable when done repeatedly in manageable layers. You might not be willing to part with some things on a particular pass through your closet, but maybe when you go through the next time you will realize that you haven't worn them and now you are ready to set them free for someone else to enjoy. Maybe a better goal is to go through your things every season and try to part with a certain number of garments (or whatever you want your goal to be). Just keep chipping away at it and be proud of your progress. Dana White says that "Less equals success!" I am cheering you on. 😀
I just went through all my clothes and eliminated probably half of everything in total. Moving towards wearing the same thing every day and it's pretty liberating.
I thinned out my collection of jumpers and put them in a box under the bed last year. Then Christmas morning I received 3 new jumpers. I have come to the mindset that in passing on my hardly worn jumpers from under the bed that I am gifting someone a present and keeping them warm and comfortable.

It was time to do a check-up on my closet because I got a few new pieces for Christmas. I last checked on it about 2 months ago. It was much easier to answer the questions "do/will I wear this?" because I knew what I hadn't touched. Said goodbye today to one of my favorite shirts of 7+ years. I've fixed holes on it several times and though I could still easily go on wearing it, I felt it was time to let it go as I have 4 other shirts in better shape with nearly same length of sleeve that I haven't had to fix any holes on.
Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know that my new book, Things That Matter, is finally here. I put my heart into it, and I can’t wait to share it with you. You can pick up a copy at www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/676394/things-that-matter-by-joshua-becker/
Can it be found in italy?

Don't know if I can do that.myself. haha
@@wandalanders8700 I do that as well
Even my fine jewelry, I gave some to my nieces as I don’t wear a lot of it anymore.
Awesome🙌🏼🌸
I organized my drawers and love it. Still working on my closets.
Number 10: chose a favorite color combination and stick to it. It will be easier to mix and match, creating dozens of outfits from a few pieces, and easier to replace items when necessary.
I do this. It’s helpful.
Yes 🙌
It changed my life to stick to my colorpalet and giving away a lot of my clothes. Until about 6 years ago I would buy new clothes thinking I had nothing to wear. No more. Saves me so much money and no more frustrations. Better for environment too. I rarely buy something new. When I go buy something I know what I need. Bought one sweater and a few socks this winter and that was it. This spring and summer I do not need anything at all. I kind of capsule now. Wearing a limited amount of clothes and not replacing when not wearable anymore.
I have 6 black tshirts and 6 black shorts for outside/activwear
And easier to accessorize
And he doesn't have to stop talking for long pauses while looking away from the camera in deep thought all the time.

Yep I go between three as they all have something to offer even if it’s something small as there seems to be more than one way to get there.

Yeah, dats wat she wore in the friends episode also.
I use to have so much black and black... my doctor started calling my Ms Johnny Cash haha
She’s a favorite of mine, I’ll have to check out her book. She reminds me of Audrey Hepburn, classic beauties.
@@wandalanders8700 that was a compliment no matter how he said it.
The idea of packing for a holiday is a great way to focus on your favourite items. Good tip.
@@sharonche5042 Thanks for responding to my comment. This strategy has worked well for me.

Decluttered my closet a year ago. Couldn’t be happier.
Please let us know how you lost the weight. Weight loss would be my greatest reason to “thin” out my closet.
LeMErin21 seems to be the most ideal way to restore good health. Low carbs and no sugar.
I must do it. Thank you 🙏
Firstly, congratulations on losing that weight. Now, enjoy looking good in your new attire 👍
Congratulations on your significant achievement. May you keep it going forward the rest of your healthy life.
I decided to put nothing under my bed. I intenionally got rid of my previous bed with a container underneath because I decided I didn't need it: I don't want anything under my bed, to let energy flow and for a better and easier cleaning.
And I live in a flat, which is very small comparing to USA houses! 😅 No garage, no basement.
70 mq and it's two of us, fast to clean and to keep clutter free🎉🎉🎉
I enjoy your video very much.
You did right
I find this too, buy 2 pairs of those great fitting trousers. Women's fashion changes so fast. I have favourite items I regret not buying duplicates.
I really appreciate that your videos don’t include ads at the beginning- thanks Joshua!
I would also recommend getting rid of items that require complicated care. For example, I don‘t iron. But I realize that it depends on your job to an extent whether you can get away with that. 😊
I have done all of these. And I’m a fan of black and gray so that’s 90% of my closet now. 🥰ty for all u do.
I have reduced my wardrobe to monochrome, base colour and a 30 piece wardrobe. I love it . If I buy a thrift item it is now one in and one out
@@minimalist5555life same🥰♥️♥️♥️ one in one out.
Dawn from The Minimal Mom brought me to your channel! Love this.
So, two of something? Does that mean you are doing laundry daily?

Great advice as always. I would also add that having less clothing means less washing, giving us more free time to do more enjoyable things.
I have been reducing my clothing for a while, but find I have to wash way more often. Especially those things for which I only have one. :( Requires a lot more planning for me.
less stress and more time for yourself and more time for your family and friends
Good luck!
@@posiesblessings what a lovely response! I relate to both of you. I see moving/ downsizing as a great decluttering opportunity.
The format has changed so many times just in my lifetime..tiny black/white snaps, paper photos, slides(50s/60s), movies, videos, dvds.and now phones...🤪
I have family photos going back 150 years...some huge in big frames.
Will give away some to distant family "branches"
I'm not putting anything in a "cloud"...how long before that idea is superseded?
@@oneheart19
Thank you. Your right now that I think of it, my children have only have the newer events with they’re kids. It might be nice for them to have some of the old pictures when they were young. Have a great day

Thank you. My nephew said, he could help me put them on a usb so, thank you for the advice.
Love your suggestions. I am stuck on items from difference sizes (smaller) that I can’t seem to eliminate…. Always enjoy your videos ❤️
ok Joshua, it's January 15th, I'm going to try your experiment and put 1/2 my clothing away for the rest of the month.

I had given over the largest closet to just his things because he is a saver and has stuff he can still fit into from high school....which was in the 1970s...things I would prefer he did not wear in public, if you know what I mean...: )
Thanks, Mr. Becker, for encouraging us all to live with less so we can do more living. God bless.
lol
Hiya Joshua, I love your videos and really great straight advice, which has changed my life for the better. Thank you very much, David.
My friend and I were just talking about this yesterday
The best tips to declutter clothes and other accessories. Great solutions!!! I'll definitely try some of them. Thank you so much!!! 🙏🏿💯🏆🌏🌱🍀🐞💫🌞👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿🎉👏🏿
I took your advice awhile ago about creating a uniform for myself. Best thing ever, thanks
If it’s not too personal, where do you buy your black shirts? Also do you dry clean them?
Very well explained. All the points resonated, were practical, and well articulated..thanks.
Hardest area to declutter in my house…. You and Dawn are the best in different ways! This helped, thank you for the final nudge😘
Yes, I really like how he’s short & to the point, it motivates me. Then I listen to Dawn while I throw stuff out.
I purge 2-3 times a year. I do very little shopping. I am so excited about how paired down my closets look.
I just did a quick run of the closet and removed around 12 pieces for the donation bin. I don't know y I kept those things. I will do the same this weekend too. Feels so much better in the closet already.
Love your ideas on minimalism....clearly the hair is a sign of your inner maximalist trying to break free!
Thank You! I decluttered constantly & you have a few new ideas. I have a one year box for things I might want to keep. I usually take out a few & get rid of the rest.
Picking a number of clothes to get rid of is a great idea for people like me who always find a reason to keep everything! Thanks!
I recently took out half of my closet clothes and put them in another room. So far I haven’t missed anything.
Just take first two items on the right and decide to keep or get rid of them. Do two a day.
This was so helpful, thank you 👏🏻
These are great tips! I am in between sizes so I am keeping both. I gave away a lot of accessories and I sold quite a few. I am not getting anymore at this time! I do love scarves! That is a weakness, but I will go through and give away some!
I try to stay away from trendy clothes that
will go out of style quickly! I have classic pieces like several pairs of jeans, white shirt, black pants, black skirt, a jean dress, blouses and dresses in solid colors, etc. Any suggestions or more tips will be helpful! 😎👍🏽🌹🌷❤️🩶💜🩷🩵💚🤍🌸🌼🌻
Inspiring and motivating me to embrace the concept of living with things you love.
Thank you I always appreciate your ideas because everything you say is true! Thank you again love your videos.
I am trying too to make minimalist closet . Whew hard to tie away all my favorites
You can do this!
Great advice! ❤️
Another tip I find useful, hang your clothes correctly, not inside out, or tossed over a hanger. U can see what u own when they are hung neatly
So true
I have 35 reversible skirts, so 70 patterns I can wear. Made in a fair trade factory in Rajasthan, sold by an independent woman in the south of England. Some are above the knee, some on the knee. The waistbands are poppers, so they always fit. I have a strict rotation system so I wear them all and I love them all!
I got rid of all my things but what I can get into my subaru. Happiness is coming my way!😊
Im decluttering as reflection of closing the door of old chapters of my life.
i was required to wear dresses before as part of my 1st job.
Cheers.
As always...GREAT suggestions!!!
Thank you!!!
😀😁😊😎👍
Makes so much sense!
I have only one hoodie I Looovvee and try to do t this for most everything.
I've found that when I was working I was much better at having a few standard pieces & mixing /matching for different looks. I think now I've just gotten lazy. But when my primary wardrobe was business I needed less "in case items" because I already had them.
I noticed you look strong too Joshua - whatever it is you have been doing keep it up - you look great.
Great advice I'm gonna try this
I agree. Congrats!
So GRATEFUL for all your great ideas!! Made a BIG DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE!! THANK YOU!♥️
This is most difficult for me in decluttering.
@@karenneiman856 thank you!
Good ideas! Organizer: ONE IN/ONE OUT for Time Saver 1.START EASY CLOTHES RIPPED/STAINED 2. REMOVE SEASONAL 3.Get RID of Clothes Not Fitting/Uncomfortable 4.REDUCE NEED FOR ACCESSORIES 5. Idea of 1 Tshirt/Black Dress/ Handbag 6. Re-Assess Fashion Trends re:$$$Fashion Industry 7. Physically Handle each item forcing decision 8. Thumb thru' closet/Donate at least 10 items 9.Experiment w/ less: Place half of clothing in different room for Simpler Fewer Choices10.
I need to get rid of more things lol I need prayer too jijiji
Very good ideas here. Thinned out closet really sums it up. Simple, practical, spacious :-)
