    Bald guy here. As soon as I started losing it in my late 30's I started clipping the whole thing shorter and shorter until I just clip it every few days with no guard now. It saves a fortune on barber costs, the time to get to a barber, *always* looks neat, doesn't need drying after a shower or swimming and shows you have the confidence to not care what others think of your hair. I sometimes wonder what I would do if offered the chance to get my hair back. But in my 50's now I really don't think I would go back to having hair. I certainly wouldn't pay the ridiculous cost of many treatments. It's who I am now. It's part of me and I don't see a need to change it.

    @40 Over Fashion - Now that I’m closing in on 69 years of age I’m hoping for a spin-off channel - say something like, “70 JustUnder Fashion.” I will declare that I am, without question, the most stylish gentleman in my small town (population: 76,000). No “Dad Jeans,” Crocs, cargo-shorts, ball-caps, or flip-flops. I am horrified how people present themselves (men & women) IN PUBLIC(!!) and generally go out of my way to wear something nice - as most men did “back in the day.” Thank you, John, for your continued efforts at educating & influencing.

    • @lisbetsoda4874
      @lisbetsoda4874 2 роки тому +5

      Style doesn't change much for 70-year olds than plus-forty. Don't wear collarless tees - a polo shirt is always better. Wear slacks out of denim rather than actual jeans if your body doesn't suit jeans anymore. Wear better clothes all around, quality-wise. And definitely own both a summer and a winter sport coat - tweed/wool for winer, and something light for summer. Never wear white socks, shortsleeved dress shirts or acrylic anything. Keep your shoes classic and we'll polished and yourself well-groomed including tending to nose/ ear hairs and frequent hair cuts - never longer than 6 weeks between barber visits. Grooming becomes more important the older people get.

    I go with nice flip flops from surf shops. In Northern California, especially in the valley, it gets well over 100 in the summer. Shoes just don't cut it. I've spent many years at the lakes up here, it's just a lifestyle like surfing is down south. If I'm headed to a show or dinner, then that's totally different.

    I am sorry for sounding old fashioned but backpacks are for backpacking. Men carry bags, boys wear them. Backpacks and even satchels crease your shirt and leave a wear mark on your suit, like a seatbelt does on knits. Especially if in sales or influencing your can use your bag/briefcase to anchor your position where you are visiting, for example in real estate brokerage I would always leave my bag in the kitchen/family dining area so I could return there, people buy insurance and funeral packages in the sitting room, friends talk in the kitchen. I just think a quality briefcase of any sort suggests you are carrying something important, no one knows it's only got a cheese sandwich in it.

It’s hard to accept in your 20s and 30s but the fact is that bald truly is beautiful. Own it and you’ll feel great about yourself. Also when you buzz cut your hair it will take 10 years off your appearance. That is as long as you follow John’s advice and up your overall style game. Have a great Sunday !!!

    I'm 60 and I wear what's comfortable. People's opinions are of no concern unless they feel compelled to buy my clothes. I miss the Levis Silvertabs from back in the day. They were perfect for my legs. I wear workout shorts, baggier or stretch denim jeans, and XL tees most if not all the time. I thankfully stopped working in a shirt -n- tie job decades ago. My job doesn't require me to wear dressier clothes. Which is just as well because designers insist on making pants for guys with chop stick legs, and shirts for guys with bird chests, pipe cleaner arms, and narrow shoulders. My physique isn't made for that. I mean what's with all this slim fit stuff? It's like they've never heard of the person who spent any time in a gym. Dress pants today are for skinny people. Shopping is a frustrating experience and often a waste of my time. I don't have money for more "custom" fitted stuff. It simply costs too much. I've had this conversation with several of my friends who are active and into fitness. That includes women. No one wants to make pants with roomier thighs or shirts for bigger arms and wider shoulders at an affordable price. So shorts become the uniform of the day on weekends and jeans w/ a tee, a polo, or pull-over long sleeve top at work. No one seems to want to address clothes for the lifting athlete or bodybuilder physique.

    I'm a surfer who has lived near the beach in Southern California all my life. Nothing worse than seeing a non-beach dude wearing flip-flops with pasty white feet and legs. Major no-no. And you nailed it with the "no dad jeans" and "no dad hat" policy!

      Most belts come with 5 holes, so I'd go for the buckle in the middle hole. Gives you a bit of movement for Christmas and slim down in summer

    YES, ditch the F-ing hats guys! It has always been such a huge pet-peeve of mine to go out to dinner at a decent place, look around and see half of the adult men wearing hats. Rule of thumb: If the restaurant doesn't have a drive-thru, you need to take off your hat.

    Are straight cut jeans better than slim? I find slim cut a bit feminine for men in our early 40s?

    • @40OverFashion
      @40OverFashion  2 роки тому +1

      I prefer slim. I suppose it depends on the brand, but sometimes the cut of straight jeans can get a little too floppy down towards your shoe. Not always though.

    Luckily I had extra Polo in car. Stunned us. Collars beats t-shirt in public.
    For me, t-shirts for home, not beyond since that golfing day.

    As for the receding hairline, have accepted it 😭, and have gone shorter. The best part is all the time and money I save... haven't used a comb, brush, hair dryer, or hair products in about 20 years! Just shampoo, lather, rinse, and towel dry! Voila! 🤗

    Great video!! It takes so little effort to not look like a slub. Folks are also so fat that it seems they have just given up on everything. It's sad. But your videos show, to stand out and look like an adult, takes no time. It's funny, teaching I show films and videos of America from the 40's-early 70's, folks dressed SO MUCH better. And they were VERY slim. We could learn from our fathers and grandfathers. Thankfully, we have you!

      One might be surprised at how inexpensive it is to get pants altered. I have had this problem all my life, and I have a person now who alters my pants and it has made all the difference in the world. It does add to the cost of the pants, but in my mind it has been worth it to get that pants that fit perfect instead of just well.

    I know for sure I am guilty about the jeans. I buy them from wal-mart or target cause they are affordable. I just need to go the extra step and get them tailored to get that right amount of tapper down the leg. As for shoes, I'm set on boots for sure. But daily footwear, I'm lacking in that area. I do love the comfort of my K-swiss shoes but I have been checking out the options on Thursday Boots for some of their daily footwear. That clean minimal white sneaker looks amazing. Just need to save up a bit so I can get a couple different pairs.

Would be nice to see contents that are risky, progressive, not so safe and siloed. Like people’s pallets, their fashion flavor senses have expanded and are no longer satisfied with just vanilla. Please receive this with the utmost respect. Anxiously waiting to see something from you with more flavor.

    I shave my head too. I miss my hair but I do like the bald look. Living in Seattle though if your bald 👨🏽‍🦲 you still need a hat. I try to wear flat caps to keep my head warm and in the summer to protect my head I wear a light straw trilby because I know I’m too old to wear baseball hats unless I’m doing yard work.

      NEVER with socks. A man always looks better in a loafer or boat shoe or sneaker than in sandals of any sort. If you MUST, then Birkenstock are obviously better than flip flops, except for in a public shower. But your feet must look nice, including welltended feet and nails.
