Standalones usually end up being some of my favorite books, I really wish more fantasy, and retelling type books were standalones. I feel like now everything is a series, and I CAN'T KEEP UP! XD
neverlandbooks You should read 'The Night Circus' It is an absolutely beautifully written fantasy stand alone. I'm not even a huge fan of fantasy, but this was wonderfully, yet maturely whimsical and I adored every word of it.
I agree completely with your thoughts on The Martian. I just filmed a wrap up, and I said a lot of the same things. The humor added so much to the story, and it helped me like Mark Wattney even more. And I also love the Book Thief! The fact that it's narrated by Death gives the book a totally new and different perspective, and makes for an interesting read
I´m loving your everyday videos!!! And this one in particular, cause often we get caught in series and kind of forget about the standalones, so thanks for the recomendations :)
Ok, I have added most of the books to my to-read list, because they sound pretty intriguing. A few of my favorite standalones: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier The Casual Vacancy by J. K. Rowling It Can't Always Be Caviar by Johannes Mario Simmel Tracy's Tiger by William Saroyan Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder Kind of random choice, but they're all great :- )
The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August YES!!! I got a copy from a secondhand bookstore. The synopsis did a very good job in intriguing me. The ending is the best! It was the only ending that got me screaming "Hell YES! Finally!" It was so satisfying. Loved it so so so much.
I really like how there are books from a bunch of different genres in this video! I really want to read George! Ready Player One is definitely one of my favorites too!
Ready Player One (narrated by Wil Wheaton - whom I lovvvvvve) and The Martian were so good and two of my favorite books of all time. The Book Thief is on my list!
The Book Thief and also Wonder are two books which would also be on my favourites list! And there are a lot on my TBR here as well, like More Happy Than Not and also Ready Player One!
I also read Ready Player One via audiobook and it was amazing! Wil Wheaton is the narrator, which is especially incredible, because he's the funniest nerd ever and he's even mentioned in the book itself.
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese is BEAUTIFUL! It's been over three years since I've read it and it won't leave my mind. It's a family saga about two twin boys who grew up in Ethiopia
Book Thief gets points for the best closing sentence ever. Fall into this book. The Martian draws you in keeps you going you can't wait to see what happens next, and how will it end. I really must pick up a copy Sister Rosa and Narrow Road North
I'm so glad you like The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. I read it last year and it was one of my favourite books of all time. Maybe one day I will reread it as an audiobook!
The Book Thief and The Martian were wonderful! I highly recommend Station Eleven and The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender. Both of these books were beautiful. Love your videos!
My favourite stand alone book is "Donde los árboles cantan" by Laura Gallego. Is such an awesome book, I love it. It's not in english though, but if some of you understand spanish, I would highly recommend it to you
I Am the Messenger by Marcus Zusak. Its completely different from the Book Thief, but an amazing amazing read that will stick with you for a long time. Entwined by Heather Dixon, my favorite fairy tale retelling I've ever read. Beautiful story.
Some of my favourite stand alones are Otherbound by Corinne Duyvis, This is Where it Ends by Marieke Nijkamp, Cut me Free and The Row by J.R. Johansson.
The MArtian audiobook is my favorite audiobook I've heard. Yes, the original material is hilarious and great by itself. But the narrator did an amazing job!
Trying to think what my favourite stand alone books are made me realise how few I've read when compared to series. Some of my favourites include Looking for Alibrandi, Jane Steele, The Sidekicks, The Ghost's Child and Sister Heart.
The Magicians Lie by Greer Macallister has been one of my favorite novels for 2016 and The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner these were the books that left a big impression on me. thank you for all the recommendations :)
Through The Woods looks really awesome! I have been wanting to listen to Ready Player One on Audiobook. I also have My Sister Rosa on my shelf, and your thoughts are pushing me to pick it up soon. I also plan on reading The Book Thief for Tome Tople!
One of my favorite stand alones I actually read in high school, called Girl in Blue. Its a historical fiction by Ann Rinaldi, that is somewhat based on the life of Sarah Emma Edmonds who disguised herself as a man so she could serve in the army during the civil war. Its a fast read, but really good especially for middle grade/teens. ~ C
My favourite standalones are Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Jane Eyre, The Woman in White, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel, Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian, Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys, The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. I probably have more but I'll leave it there 😂
try Max Havelaar by Multatuli (unless the English version is sold under hits real name : Eduard Douwes Dekker). or has a couple of long lists in it and one thing that repeats itselfs to often, but it is sooo good. Also Dances with Wolves if you haven't already read it. And In Lucia's Eyes by Arthus Japin, The Angel Maker by Stefan Brijs, Darwin's Dreampond by Tijs Goldschmidt
Thank you for another lovely video! My favorite of 2016 was The Martian. I read it early, my third book or something close and nothing ever got close that year. It left me buying all the sci fi and with a huge bookhangover. Have you read Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro? My favorite book of 2015 and one I will probably re-read this year and never forget. Highly recommended.
I read Far Far Away by Tom McNeal last year and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it! I haven't heard too many people talk about it, but I thought it was quite good!
The one book I always recommend is Made You Up by Francesca Zappia. It came out two years ago, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. It's the only book I consistently re-read, and is my go to for when I'm in a reading slump. It's about a girl named Alex, who has paranoid schizophrenia. She moves to a new school at the beginning of the book, and there meets a gut who she thought she made up when she was a kid. It takes off from there, and it honest to god, my all time favorite book. Ever. I could talk about it for hours and hours. The writing is excellent, the characters are fantastic, and it just is extremely good.
Have you read "The goldfinch" by Donna Tart? It is amazing! The writing, the story, the characters, the topics everything is just beautiful, captivating and important. Fantastic read! Also heard a lot of great things about it.
oohh so many books here that I absolutely love. The Martian is definitely one of the best books I've ever read, as is The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. My personal go-to recommendation for standalones is The Song of Achilles, I just love that book so, so much.
Quick list of some cool books 1) Girl Last Seen 2) Dorothy Must Die 3) Warcross 4) Book Thief I have a darker taste but can pretty much love any story. :)
Two of my favorite stand alones are Dave At Night and When Marine was There, they're both really wonderful and touching stories and I think you'd really enjoy them! ^_^
My own MOST favorite standalone titles are, oddly, NOT Urban Fantasy, which is mostly what I love to read. *gasp* I know, right?! But I really just LOVE these six stories: 1) Absolutely, Positively by Jayne Ann Krentz. This is romantic suspense title (sort of paranormal, as Harry - male lead - has a psychic ability) by my most favorite author ever. :-) 2-3) Getting Rid of Bradley *and* Manhunting by Jennifer Crusie. These are non-paranormal Romantic Comedies and I just really-really love them. :-) 4-5) A Little Fate *and* A Little Magic by Nora Roberts. Both of these books each have three fantasy-romance short stories in them. ("Winter Rose" in A Little Fate is my FAVORITE!) :-) 6) Ravished by Amanda Quick (also known as Jayne Ann Krentz writing historicals). This is an historical romantic suspense, not paranormal in any way, but I really just love it. Harriet and Gideon are a to-die-for couple. :-) Most of my other reread-a-LOT stand-alone titles are also by Jayne Ann Krentz. Books like Falling Awake *and* All Night Long (contemporaries written as JAK); and Lie by Moonlight (technically book #4 in her Vanza series, but I read it most often as a stand-alone *and* Wait Until Midnight (historicals written as Amanda Quick). :-) Apart from the above-named books, the books I most often read and reread *are* Urban Fantasy series books. I'll go add a reply to my comment on your "favorite series" video to name my own favorite series. :-)
I'll definitely try My Sister Rosa, sounds like an awesome book. I have just finished the book entitled The Other Einstein and I thought it was a pretty good one. :)
I haven't read any of these, but they all sound so interesting! One of my fave stand alones would have to be The Things I Didn't Say by Kylie Fornasier :)
Have you read The Sudden Appearance of Hope also by Claire North? I read it last year and I really liked it and recommend, I haven't heard almost anyone talk about it. (:
Yes, she does, even tho that's the only book by her I've read so far. But I want to read all of the others including Harry August and the new one that is coming out. I'm very intrigued.
We almost have same favorites!! The Book Thief More happy than not. The Martian Some of my favorites too are: Song of Achilles and More than this I'm currently reading Ready Player One and the next book I will read is A List of Cages

Do you prefer stand alone or series? I always feel I could never get enough of stories I love haha. But I do appreciate having stand alone as intermission between series or when I want to get through something fast. The Martian is an excellent recommendation.
I just bought Adam Silvera's other book, history is all you left me. Have you read it? I recently got really into audio books so will definitely check out the Martian on Audible :) Wonder and The Book thief are on my TBR. My Sister Rosa sounds fantastic.
