Dude you’re awesome. I literally just watched your video because I like your previous work and was planning to watch another video to have my question answered and like magic you answered it in the video and saved me a lot of time. Very awesome vid. Buying some gear through your links. Really need that cage and attachment thanks again :)
Thanks for the rundown Daniel. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can shoot with this combo. I have yet to test my Shogun Inferno with my GH5. This makes me look forward to it. Bravo good sir.
I'm using Lindy Cromo HDMI cable to transmit 4K 10bit 422 60p from my GH5 to Shogun Inferno. It's way more cheaper than that coiled Atomos cable, super slim and works best!
This was the most helpful gh5 // inferno video I've seen! Thanks so much man. 6,7,$8000 rig but a $100 little HDMI cable kinda stings. I cheaped out on an Amazon one, and I'm having problems with 10bit 4.2.2. Time to pony up. Cheers.
Great video Daniel! I just got my ninja inferno, super excited to use it with my GH5. I like how compact your rig is, can you share a link where you purchased that small rig bracket for your cage. I would like to make mine more compact without the articulating arm. Thanks D!
Thanks Brandon, that clamp was discontinued for some reason but they just announced a new one, link here: www.smallrig.com/smallrig-dslr-monitor-holder-with-nato-clamp-2100.html
Hi Daniel, really nice setup. I got myself the 50mm mft version of this lens with the 2x crop. The image you get out of it is really fascinating. So you got the PL version of this anamorphic lens to get more vertical information because of the 1.33 crop, right? I guess shooting in 4k will let you end up with a solid 16:9 resolution. If I wanna end up with a 16:9 fullscreen image, I'll have to go with FullHD to get rid of the black bars. This depends also on the fact if I record on the GH5 internally, or on the atomos. Because of the 4:3 sensor readout in anmorphic mode on the GH5, I get the full information and best resolution. The atomos can't handle the full 4:3 and scales that down in the 16:9 4k resoltuion. So you end up with black bars also at the left and right. I guess with the PL version you don't have that problem? Many thanks for your quick instructions. You helped me out before with the zhiyun recordbutton and now with the atomos. Really appreciate it. Looking forward to the anamorphic testfootage. :) Greetings from cologne
This is a weird one...I find if you should 4:3 anamorphic mode in the GH5 and de-squeeze to view in the Atomos 1.33x it doesn't look right as it needs to be 2x ana, you can always scale But if you shoot 4K or UHD in camera and de-squeeze in atomos it looks right and when you shoot without the inferno and modify in PP it also looks right. So I don't shoot with the 4:3 ANA in camera and just shoot UHD and it gives me the right aspect ratio when I modify it back to 1.33x in premiere pro Panasonic should have anamorphic options 1.5, 1.3 or 2x so people know what to select when filming with certain anamorphic lenses
Why not just filming in 4:3 mode with 1.33X anamorphic and deliver in 16:9 anamorphic? You can do it in cam, as you may already know. Is that feature not possible in the Atomos?
Thanks for the video Daniel. One question: Can we use a 1.33x adapter in the new 4:3 5K mode (4992x3744) and get a "wider" 6K 16:9 footage (6656x3744) than the internal 16:9 capture (5184x2916)? From what I understand, internally the camera crops the height of the 4:3 sensor, downscaling a 5184x2916 sensor grab to 4K UHD (BTW GH5's sensor is 5184x3888 or 20MP 4:3). That leads to about 25 percent information loss vertically. But, with a 1.33x adapter we will be squeezing a wider 16:9 image on the almost entire 4:3 sensor, resulting in a wider 16:9 than what's possible internally. Am I wrong in my assumptions?
Hey man thanks a lot for this. Do you know how you would also mount a Rode Video Mic Pro onto a GH5 along with the Ninja? I'm struggling to find a cage that would do this, as it looks like the SmallRig cold shoe would be blocked by the Ninja? Thanks!
I think most cages can mount the mic on the right side as it has an extra cold shoe mount. The tricky issue is with the Panasonic XRL1 as it needs the cameras connection so for that to work you will need a off camera flat connection cable
No one ever references Avid when talking about bringing in the files into a NLE. Yet Avid remains the film & TV standard NLE, harsh yet true. I would be interested to hear more on this.
Do you use the Ninja Inferno to also record audio through its XLR connection? If so, I was wondering how the quality was compared to that of the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 XLR Microphone Adapter. If practical, I'd like to avoid buying both the Ninja Inferno and DMW-XLR1. Thanks!
All honesty, I've never used the Atomos for audio so couldn't give you an honesty answer. I have used the XLR1 Plenty of times and I was happy with the results. Also love that it gets power straight from the camera.... I tried to power it externally via a shoe adapter cable but never did end up finding one
Great thanks! I like your setup with the MOVCAM cage w/the Atomos. I can't seem to find anything online reviewing the audio quality of the Inferno. If I were to also use the XLR1 adapter, the question would be where to mount it. I did find this, www.came-tv.com/products/came-tv-oc-e3-cable-adapter. Perhaps that could be an option.
Hi Daniel, thanks for video. Did you experience any micro jitters / judders when slowly panning the gh5 on a tripod? The external output as well as the internal recordings have the same jitters. I'm using PAL configuration and full hd 24 fps mode and have tried other frame rates and resolutions
Hey Daniel, looking at the feedback on the new gh5 firmware, and also the new 6K anamorphic feature ( which can't be output over HDMI ), I'm beginning to think that now, the only advantage the Atomos has is ... the great screen, 10bit 4K 60P, anamorphic de-squeeze, Pro Res recording. All that against the cons of it weighing a ton for gimbal use and eating batteries. I already have the super little Small HD Focus, so I guess what I'm really asking is how relevant is the Atomos Inferno currently for a GH5 user ?
Hi Barry, in all honesty I shoot a lot without the monitor. I like small camera to stay small as intended and you are right...only benefit is the screen and 4K60 10bit. Unless Im shooting a scene over and over with time/planned shoots I will use the monitor and nice for clients but other then that...it can be a hassle and eat batteries and be costly. Hope that helps
Cheers Daniel, totally with you on this, the Gh5 even with the Zhiyun, is so light and portable, it kills me to whack this massive weight on top and lose most of that portability. I was just checking with you to see if I was overlooking something, so thanks for your reply, wicked channel btw !!
its a Zacuto lens support www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&IWB=GB&O=&Q=&c3api=1876%2C90749819162%2C%2C&gclid=CjwKCAjw47bLBRBkEiwABh-PkZSS9GZulgDwqMhAf2Ptau0EceytrWdhXPbXfZIbKt8ty7o558rqDhoChuwQAvD_BwE&is=REG&pcur=XGBP&sku=615165 or smallrig have a similar one for less www.amazon.co.uk/d/Electronics-Photo/SMALLRIG-Light-Weight-Support-1505/B00RYKVETU/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1500362896&sr=8-2-fkmr2&keywords=zacuto+lens+support
Daniel in Premiere Pro right click the file in the viewer and select high quality playback and it won't do that crop in during scrub or playback anymore.
true but editing big session and playing back in HR 4K is slow and skips frames so I'd rather convert/record to prores. Plus prores is easier on the editing system anyway so its a win win. Even if I don't use the inferno I'd still convert to prores using edit ready. The new ALL-I codec (coming soon) is much better but Premiere still reacts to the footage the same way until they fix it
thanks for this video...... do you have any thoughts about the smallhd monitor? im thinking of using it with the a6500 possibly in the future. take care ... chris
Hi Dan. But how do you avoid picking up the noisy sound from the Ninja Inferno when recording sound? Do you use wireless mics for the talent or a long boom?
Heya...most of the time its a boom mic or lavs. Sometimes when using a sound guy they can complain about the noise. I sometimes get noise issues with my Razyr light too, but that depends on the room temp for it to kick in
Thanks Daniel. When you use the wireless Lavs with your GH5 and Atomos Ninja Inferno, I take you have the XLR breakout cable going from the Inferno to the Wireless Receiver? My next purchase it wireless lavs and that illusive XLR breakout cable.
HI Daniel, I have the GH5, XLR Adaptor and Ninja Inferno. If I want to capture audio from my Mics, i.e shotgun or wireless lavs, I use the XLR 1 Adaptor, but what difference or advantage would it be to capture audio from the multi-pin connector on the side of the Inferno with a pair or Atomos XLR Breakout Cable?
Apologies for the delay. To be honest I have no idea if its better or similar...I've never used the audio connection on the inferno, always go straight into the camera or with the XLR1
Hi Daniel, what's the rail your using to attach the Atomos to the rod adaptor? I can't seem to find this online and it looks like a much simpler solution than using the full Atomos cage.
I had this same question as I also can't find it on the smallrig site or via Google. It's the small slider bar (nato rail?) that looks like you've got screwed directly into the bottom of the Atomos which has smallrig and atomos engraved onto it. There is a close up of it at 3 min 59 sec.
Is it possible to mount a rod support on top of the MovCage as like as on the Skier Pro GH4 Lite Cage which makes things really easier for rigging the GH5 with Wireless Focus Motor on a ronin. By the way nice videos :-)
There is footage in here but if you blink you would have missed it haha I'm shooting something soon so I'm trying to hold out for that to share, unless I get enough time to get out and shoot something nice soon
Just a heads because I brought a HDMI cable after watching this vid based off of your link and recommendation but the HDMI cable you link to does not support 4k 60P through an Atomos. The ATOM4K60C5 would be the correct cable and cost just over £100 You link to the ATOMCAB010 which only supports up to 4k 30p. I can see you definitely have a ATOM4K60C5 based off the the logo on your cable in the video.
Watching your video, am I to conclude that the monitor is recording and the camera is also simultaneously recording? Not trying to be cynical, its just that I've never quite understood hot the set up works!! No one really talks about (I Wish They Would) what gives with the storage cartridges that can accompany the product. .... Thanks
yes correct, or if you don't put a card in the camera it will still sync record to the monitor if the monitor has a card. The ninja inferno takes SSD cards but you will need a Atomos sized caddy for it to work. I find for important jobs its best to record to the SSD/Monitor and SD in camera for safety so you have both haha
Please help. I've done the setting with HDMI and Timecode. Mine doesn't record and there's no red box nor a flashing red light when I press record from my GH5. any advice?
That were so many important infos. I haven't heared of that 16:9 anamorphic possibility elsewhere. Until now I only shot with bigger cams except the canon 5d mark II and III but I'm saving my money now for this gh5. Tested it on saturday and it was awesome and paired with that recorder.... 👍 why haven't you bought the shogun inferno. You could have also used it as monitor with the ursa mini.
Thanks man... At the moment I don't need a monitor/recorder for the Ursa Mini as I either shoot with the monitor or EVF. But the Inferno does have more anamorphic options so may look into that now
Daniel Peters so you mean the ninja inferno has more anamorphic options than the shogun inferno? I think about getting one of those but I can use the shogun inferno with all the cameras and the ninja inferno only with hdmi cameras. How about the weight of your package? I'm using a zacuto dslr baseplate with an old gh2 I've purchased a couple of weeks ago just to get comfotable with m4/3. I mounted a side handle to the rods and do a lot of handheld work actually. Do you think it is only a tripod option? Thx for your answers
Apologies if I made that sound confusing, I meant the inferno has more options then the monitor in the Ursa mini. Think the ninja and shogun are almost identical besides connections and 240fps HD, so the anamorphic options should be the same The weight handheld is fine but just keep in mind too much weight might interact with the stabilised sensor in the camera, sometimes to movement can be more bumpy compared to just camera and lens
Daniel Peters Random question. But have you done much with the FS5 before? The plan is to get the FS5 in a couple weeks with the RAW upgrade mixed with the Shogun. But the GH5 footage does look really good!
Daniel Peters I guess it's all perception for them.. Having you show up with the URSA Mini looks better. I was obsessed with the URSA Mini until I got to use the pro 2 months ago.. it's just not that practical for my style and clients
If you record in 4K + anamorphic lens with the intent to crop the sides off to output in 16:9, wouldn't the final resolution be less than 4K since you are cutting the sides off the original 4K image?
1 questions...slr magic anamorfic lens ... how do you use them with the vlogl? are you in 6k or 4k that bit rate tips? luts? last thing please, what slow? 35 50 0 70mm anamorfic slr magic? or all three which one is used more ... I am not anamorphic expert. thank you so much AE
Hi Anamorphic on the GH5 depends on what squeeze your lens is.... If you are using 2x anamorphic lenses then you should shoot 6K anamorphic 4:3, which the bit rate isn't as high as 4k 1,33x anamorphic but still looks great. If you are filming with 1,33x anamorphic lenses then 4K works nice. I find the 50mm anamorphic looks best, 35mm anamorphic is good but can create look issues and the 70mm is just too slow for me from slrmagic.
if I register with hell ninja the bit rate is prores 422HQ but it can not be 6k ... I think. if I turn in 4k it is not anamorphic 2x I'm only interested in anamorphic 2x. Thank you for your experience and advice..50mm TOP!
Battery life seems pretty good using a big V-LOCK battery but it does seems quite short using dual Sony batteries, dual Sony is around 2 hours tops with v-lock lasting at least 5/6 hours
Daniel Peters thanks. I'm a long time GH shooter but never worked with external screen. I think most of the time, I'll use it as a monitor. I'm just checking if it fits for run and gun shoot.
Did you mean 4:3 for 2x anamorphic or just 4:3?. Should be yes to both as the inferno desqeezes 2x and so does the GH5. Regarding viewing a 4:3 frame as long as the GH5 is set up to view in camera it should feed that to the inferno
Everything is listed in the description. Unfortunately the plate under the monitor seems to have been an early release that never came out (which is what I have) the best option similar is to buy the small rig ninja inferno cage, that way you have a nato rail on the bottom of the monitor, then you can just attach a nato rod on the camera and slide the 2 together hope that helps
I tried to set up the triggering mode with the timeline instructions I did it exactly the same as DP and I can't get it to work . I have to press on the ATOMOS to REC the GH5 won't do it. Anybody has this issue ?
Hey Daniel, does the Prores codec solve the problem with banding when color grading Vlog with clear blue sky? This banding is very-very frustrating and i'm looking for a solution.
you shouldn't get banding with the 10bit files so 10bit prores should be better too. So far I haven't seen banding issues unless I shoot 8 bit, but unfortunately even when I don't have banding, uploading causes banding in footage even thought its not in the original file
Yes, i shoot 8 bit now, haven't got Ninja Inferno yet. Is it possible to get some raw prores 10bit file to check it out? Atomos do not provide it at the website.
I just want to test and find out is Ninja Inferno worth buying and will it work for me. I'd like to check Prores, cause you mentioned, that it works better in Premiere. EditReady is great, but I'm a PC-guy and they have mac version only.
I don't really have enough space to upload a file or send a file across in UHD 10bit proves. What do you edit with? because FCPX is fine in proxies with 10 bit from the camera and some say premiere pro is ok on PC
they are very nice, bit too much blue sometimes around shadows in highlighted areas I only have the 50 so a review might not be very useful plus I don't have time right now for better testing
Thats what I was worried about, I've been testing wide open a 2.8 and even throwing a speedbooster on and its been fine for me I don't like overly sharp images but its definitely not too soft
Thanks for you input, also love working with your luts, use them in my GH5 and also at work on some projects... So now you can say that NYPD uses your luts
So I have a Vazen 40mm 1.8X. GH6 and GH5S + Atomos Ninja V. So what can I tell you guys. GH5S have 3.3K 422 10 Bit 24/25/30p on Card and 3.7K Raw on Recorder. If you take 3.3K on card, through HDMI output is not full screen VIEW. Its only 50% with this desqueeze. If you take 3.7K you have full screen View on Ninja. The same with gh6. BUT gh6 dont have 422 10bit. We have 420 10p on Card. And also non full screen view. If we want 60P on anamorphic mode we have to crop image...So Iam disappointed about this all.... And colors of Ninja are false.
Great review Daniel! I'm trying to attach my Ninja Inferno as securely as possible. Similar to your set-up, except I have this SmallRig cage. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. www.smallrig.com/smallrig-panasonic-lumix-gh5-dmw-xlr1-protection-kit-2017.html
Thanks man Your best bet it to get this piece www.amazon.com/dp/B077867R1J/?tag=wwwdanieljohn-21 then try and off set your handle somewhere, making sure the monitor and bracket is at the front Hope that helps
Hey Daniel, just purchased all your GH5 Luts + a couple of your music collections... owesome and versatile. Have a great day!
thanks man, much appreciated :)

Hi Daniel,
really nice setup.
Greetings from cologne
This is a weird one...I find if you should 4:3 anamorphic mode in the GH5 and de-squeeze to view in the Atomos 1.33x it doesn't look right as it needs to be 2x ana, you can always scale
But if you shoot 4K or UHD in camera and de-squeeze in atomos it looks right and when you shoot without the inferno and modify in PP it also looks right. So I don't shoot with the 4:3 ANA in camera and just shoot UHD and it gives me the right aspect ratio when I modify it back to 1.33x in premiere pro
Panasonic should have anamorphic options 1.5, 1.3 or 2x so people know what to select when filming with certain anamorphic lenses
I'm wondering why do you use the anamorphic 1.33x PL mount lens when the cheaper 2x for MTF mount are available?
Hey man thanks a lot for this. Do you know how you would also mount a Rode Video Mic Pro onto a GH5 along with the Ninja? I'm struggling to find a cage that would do this, as it looks like the SmallRig cold shoe would be blocked by the Ninja? Thanks!

it all should be in the cage from movcam www.productiongear.co.uk/movcam-panasonic-gh5-cage-kit.html
I had this same question as I also can't find it on the smallrig site or via Google. It's the small slider bar (nato rail?) that looks like you've got screwed directly into the bottom of the Atomos which has smallrig and atomos engraved onto it. There is a close up of it at 3 min 59 sec.

you can but you'd have to create your own way of rigging it as I think the movcam rod system is intended for underneath
Awesome man....

I'm shooting something soon so I'm trying to hold out for that to share, unless I get enough time to get out and shoot something nice soon
Just a heads because I brought a HDMI cable after watching this vid based off of your link and recommendation but the HDMI cable you link to does not support 4k 60P through an Atomos.
The ATOM4K60C5 would be the correct cable and cost just over £100
You link to the ATOMCAB010 which only supports up to 4k 30p.
I can see you definitely have a ATOM4K60C5 based off the the logo on your cable in the video.
Thanks for pointing that out Andre, all links fixed now.
Mine doesn't record and there's no red box nor a flashing red light when I press record from my GH5. any advice?
Disregard, I found out the problem. Make sure you guys switch the input on the Ninja Inferno to HDMI. Great video anyways.
Think the ninja and shogun are almost identical besides connections and 240fps HD, so the anamorphic options should be the same
The weight handheld is fine but just keep in mind too much weight might interact with the stabilised sensor in the camera, sometimes to movement can be more bumpy compared to just camera and lens
Daniel Peters thx a lot always nice to get first hand information.
love your rig, I really want to get a inferno soon.
its a lovely monitor/recorder
Thanks for this! Do you know if the output from the inferno retains that de-squeezed image? ie. If I wanted to transmit to that a client monitor.
yes it should de-seqqueze in camera and to the monitor as long as you select the squeeze ratio on the inferno
Can we use the ninja 5 now? It's not as bulky or heavy..
Nice one! I just got the inferno about 2 weeks ago but haven't done a shoot yet. But it is such a nice screen. Will see tomorrow how it goes.
nice, enjoying shooting with it man
Daniel Peters Random question. But have you done much with the FS5 before? The plan is to get the FS5 in a couple weeks with the RAW upgrade mixed with the Shogun. But the GH5 footage does look really good!
I've used the F5 but not the FS5. Really all depends on your clients I guess, I could use the GH5 on every shoot but most clients won't let me haha
Daniel Peters I guess it's all perception for them.. Having you show up with the URSA Mini looks better. I was obsessed with the URSA Mini until I got to use the pro 2 months ago.. it's just not that practical for my style and clients
gotta love cameras haha
If you record in 4K + anamorphic lens with the intent to crop the sides off to output in 16:9, wouldn't the final resolution be less than 4K since you are cutting the sides off the original 4K image?
Its just a little less then UHD.... The RED Cameras are great for this or if you shoot 2x anamorphic 4:3
Which LUTS you have precharged on the Atomos? I have the same combo here :-)
the LUTS installed are from my GH5 LUT Pack sellfy.com/danielpetersdop
1 questions...slr magic anamorfic lens ...
how do you use them with the vlogl? are you in 6k or 4k that bit rate tips? luts?
last thing please, what slow? 35 50 0 70mm anamorfic slr magic? or all three which one is used more ... I am not anamorphic expert. thank you so much
AE
Hi
Anamorphic on the GH5 depends on what squeeze your lens is....
I think.
if I turn in 4k it is not anamorphic 2x
I'm only interested in anamorphic 2x.
Thank you for your experience and advice..50mm TOP!
I believe you can record UHD 2x anamorphic prores with the Ninja Inferno but there is no option yet for 6K in the inferno
Subbed! Awesome tips. Thanks man!
Would love to know how's the battery life, both when it's recording, and when you use only as a monitor 🙏🏼
I'm just checking if it fits for run and gun shoot.
you can use it as run and gun but I also like using the camera by itself too
Is it possible to record video in Raw with an external recorder such a the Atomos Ninja using the GH5??
no raw options but I'm sure it will happen with new cameras in the future
can you shoot with 4:3 aspect ratio with the gh5 on the atomos shogun?
Did you mean 4:3 for 2x anamorphic or just 4:3?. Should be yes to both as the inferno desqeezes 2x and so does the GH5. Regarding viewing a 4:3 frame as long as the GH5 is set up to view in camera it should feed that to the inferno
Are the recorded files desqueezed?
been awhile since I used it but from memory no...you have to desqueeze in post
Hi Daniel, can you share the smallrig accessories you are using? Thanks
Everything is listed in the description.
Unfortunately the plate under the monitor seems to have been an early release that never came out (which is what I have) the best option similar is to buy the small rig ninja inferno cage, that way you have a nato rail on the bottom of the monitor, then you can just attach a nato rod on the camera and slide the 2 together
hope that helps
You can edit 10bit files from your gh5, just get 'edit ready' www.divergentmedia.com/editready to convert your 10bit mov files to 10bit prores files
Are you using slr anamorphot cine lens (the all in one)... yours thoughts any review?
they are very nice, bit too much blue sometimes around shadows in highlighted areas
I only have the 50 so a review might not be very useful plus I don't have time right now for better testing
Daniel Peters thank you, debating on getting the 35mm... also curious to the sharpness
Thats what I was worried about, I've been testing wide open a 2.8 and even throwing a speedbooster on and its been fine for me
I don't like overly sharp images but its definitely not too soft
Thanks for you input, also love working with your luts, use them in my GH5 and also at work on some projects... So now you can say that NYPD uses your luts
sweet, so anytime I visit NYC I'm protected right? :)
What is the battery life as a monitor only?
think with 2 Sony batteries its around 2 hours and about 4-5 hours with the v-lock
Would you mind giving a link to the cage?
all the links are in the description
Im trying to find bracket thats holding the inferno? Can we get the link?
For some reason that mount I had never got released, In my links there should be a new one called SmallRig/Atomos monitor mount
yessir. I work on chance dailies.
nice, Im waiting on Season 2 if there is one
What's kind of lens use this video? :/
Sigma 18-35

Thanks man
Your best bet it to get this piece www.amazon.com/dp/B077867R1J/?tag=wwwdanieljohn-21 then try and off set your handle somewhere, making sure the monitor and bracket is at the front
Hope that helps
Thanks Dan. Will give that a go. :)
