I'm not even that old, but Super Mario Land is one of my childhood games. I played it on a Game Boy I got from my parents. It may very well have been part of what inspired my enthusiasm for retro technology.

Auto-scrolling itself yes. The shoot em up elements was what they were on the fence with.
