I wish Patrice was still alive to get his outlook on today's society...he predicted this is where society was headed. He's on my MT Rushmore of comedians.
I literally just find out *THIS YEAR* that he passed!! Im aaalways listening to his station on pandora. I had no idea. 💔 Swear it broke my lil heart y'all.
no way. I remember when he passed I was so hurt. I guess you got to have him " alive " in your mind longer, so that is a gift. He was one of my favorite comedians
What clinches that joke for me is when Patrice says, "let's make a deal". The implication here being that it's not just men, but women who also understand the cognitive dishonesty involved in workplace guidelines that regulate communications. He's further implying that (some) women are happy enough with that protection because they have the ability to weaponize it should they choose to. So when he says "let's make a deal", he's saying, "tell you what... You don't weaponize the workplace rules against me, and I'll try my hardest to make my compliments seem honest and palatable."
“Elephant in the Room” was pure brilliance and if I’m not mistaken, his only standup special before passing. He truly died in his prime when he was just getting started.
No doubt Patrice O’Neal harassment joke was genius, the brother had classic material and made his audience understand what he was saying by logical examples, rip to the great Patrice O’Neal 💯.
The bear-salmon setup wasn't a comparison to males having uncontrollable urges. That would make it a epar joke. He was saying that salmon and honey are the two favorite foods associated with bears. Since men are often the pursuers of relationships, putting women in the same setting is tantamount to dangling honey-covered salmon in front of a bear. Remember the topic is about "harrassment". He's just saying it isn't natural for men and women not to create these type of relationships in the workplace. *_"Of those who have dated a coworker, 42 percent said they had an ongoing, casual relationship; 36 percent said they had a “random office hookup;” 29 percent had been in a serious, long-term relationship; and 16 percent had met their spouse or partner at work."_* Harrassment is a grey area because good-looking people get away with way more than average or ugly people. A woman can consent one week then turn around a few months later and say you're harrassing her because things just didn't work out or you did something to displease her. There's also the fact that women groping in the workplace, making overtly sexual or sexist comments, or "brushing up against you" often goes unreported. I can almost guarantee you most men have at least one story they can tell of women being inappropriate. I have 7. Everything else you broke down is on point but this one you overshot the mark.
You took the words out of my mouth. CH misinterpreted the bear-salmon joke. It's pointing out the cruelty of the scenario of having men and women working together. Harassment, while it is clearly defined, what one considers to be harassment varies greatly depending on factors the accused harasser may have no control over.
“Arguably the most famous joke of the special is ‘Harassment Day’” Uhhhh no it ain’t, its the joke where he asked the women what they would do for their men if their 😸 was broken. I’ve watched that special enough times to know that that got the biggest laugh.
I don’t give compliments at work no way. I’ll ask a woman I’m interested in out to lunch or something. But no compliments. Just a small convo about work then hit her with the “I have to get back to work, can we finish this conversation over some lunch together” 🤷🏾♂️….thank me later.
So glad you guys shined a light on this rare genius. I always tout his name to people. It is a damn shame that more people do not know him. My favorite comedian of all time!!!
I have no words to describe how wonderfully put together and elaborated on this is. I'm a fan of comedy and logical reasoning. This video that you have made .... I just have no words (especially like the words you so eloquently use) to describe how well you put this together....
6:30 I think this point is inaccurate. The point was that having to interact in a way that seems absurd and unnatural to the bear with something they desire. The purpose of it is to juxtapose the natural inclinations one would have and the unnaturalness that suppressing brings. Especially given the "fish" has made efforts to be more appealing (ie honey cleavage proximity touching etc). Other than that it's a fairly accurate analysis.
Maaaaaan #comedyhype ...ifbyall dont stop it 😆 he obviously wasnt trying to make a legal point. And it's already understood humans have self control...that's part of it being funny. We all got the point. Quit tryna argue for the sake of it. What's understood doesnt need to be said every time. Yall trippin.
Patrice was a minister of the game today you’d have to listen to Katt ,Karlous Miller, and sprinkle some Paul Mooney. To get the real as him. We all know the four goats aka kings of comedy but had we put these four we’d have the empire of comedy.
Rest in peace Patrice. 💪🏿 your brother #eastsidejohnnyx is making you proud. I know that your brother Patrice but I know your looking down happy for him
I wonder what the work place would be like if it was separated by gender? To me there is just something unnatural about being around a beautiful women and not feel some type of way. ( that ish is oppressive in away) to tell a man to have some Self-Control and on the other hand have a women "freely" express her appearance (with no consequences) is some oppressive ish. You can't even say no to hiring a women ( even though her being around does disrupt the work place) yet men are told to have self-control, women can act fowl and say all types of nasty ish at work but don't be a dude saying that. Harassment is unwanted attention or acts that relates to a person's identity or sexual preference. The fuck up part is its a catch 22, just saying hi to an individual will get you caught up (depending on how they feel) if the person doesn't like you then you already stuck working in a toxic environment. Women want to feel safe working in a male environment well so do men and some men feel that's its best to stay away from women especially in isolated situations (because we know at times word of mouth alone or rumors can ruin a mans life or career.) Rumors in general can effect everyone but more specifically the words from a women in regards towards a man's behaviour is taken with truth before question. (As if questioning a situation means that what's being said is a lie. No people want more context or facts before they are likely to make a decisive decision based on pure emotion. People need to think critically about this, is it easier to integrate genders and conduct training that reprogram men and women to feel like they are the same and that what comes natural is something that needs to shamed in order for their to be equal outcomes (which is a absolute concept that doesn't exist) or do we do do what comes natural and allow things to fall in place the way that nature intended? I know most people believe I'm equality so this entire spill is gonna come of as ignorant or sexist, to that I say that's your opinion of me and I'm cool with that I understand. ( Just my opinion )
the part he says about having to hold in and keep quiet about what we been thinking all day is FACTS..I've worked in environments where women outnumbered men 10/1 and they get to walk around in short skirts and super low cut skirts where 70% of their breasts are showing and men just have to "pretend" like we don't see it; imagine women...just please imagine for a moment if you worked in an environment where men walked around with pants with there bulge poking out and with 70% of their penis's out.....EXACTLY!!!
Sad but Patrice paints guys as unable to control themselves. Problem with most of these guys, you give them an inch and they take a mile. If you're not out there offending, you don't have anything to be worried about. And the fact that you're worried about it means that on a subconscious level, you know you did something outta line, however miniscule.

I totally agree
I have a theory that those like him who died, if were still alive, would've prevented the outcome of today's world

Elephant in the room was easily put on my top three list of favorite all-time specials to watch. The other two are resided by Dave Chappelle.

Why wouldn’t it(harassment) work in Comedy? It’s only Harassment when it’s the wrong person, or when the right person has had enough.
Your breakdown is very impressive and thought through. Great video
