Patrice O'Neal confronts Marc Maron about Dane Cook
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 чер 2018
- Jim Norton, Patrice O'Neal and Marc Maron in studio. After Marc briefly discusses his personal life and his podcast, he mentions Dane Cook who came up with Patrice in the comedy world. Patrice defends Dane and explains that even if you don't like him or his style of comedy, Dane stays true to who he is and most of the people who hate on him are just jealous of his success. Marc admits he was wrong for the way he handled his interview with Dane, and says he respects Dane's work ethic and discipline if nothing else. Patrice also gives credit to Marc for being one of the most stolen from and influential comedians of that era along with Dave Attell, Todd Barry, Mitch Hedberg and Colin Quinn.

“Only people who are finished in the business can give you the interview you’re hoping for” is a really great line from Patrice.
Just looking at the comments, he's saying it as I hit the start of yours. Synchronicity......
One of the best jokes I ever heard was from Patrice. "Found out I was diabetic when my girlfriend said my piss tastes like birthday cake."
Kick ass, Thanks!
@Jeff Z it's on elephant in a room kinda just a little different he talk about how that is true love
"We need to go to the hospital baby because your pee taste scrumptious". That had me dying too... As hilarious as that is, the reality behind that bit is dark as hell. I miss him.
Joe 30 pack lol!
@Jeff Z I have clips of it from elephant in the room and other bootleg standups
We could all use a friend like Patrice. To defend your friend when the rest of the business is using him as a punching bag is loyalty at its finest.
As much as I don't like dane, at the time he didn't deserve the hate he received. But patrice is a fantastic friend.
Boston comics all trash each other in fun, but defend each other if someone actually attacks them or if someone tries to talk shit behind their back.
patrice doesnt give fuck what anyone thinks. its simultaneously the greatest thing about him and was the biggest obstacle to his own success... Chris Rock told him as much on O&A
Yeah using the "I'm teh black don't geeuv fuk real cool guy" stereotype to buy more idiot masses with "nah dey see im teh loyal don geeuv fukkk black guy" is really the sign of a genuine virtuous blob

Man, Patrice just needed a few more years and he'd have really made it.
He had opportunities to make it but he either sabotaged himself or turned them down in favor of keeping his dignity in tact, depending on you look at it. I personally go with the second choice.
If he had lived when the social media age hit, he would have been where Joe Rogan is now.
He would have one of the biggest podcasts right now if he were alive today. He's not just insightful in conversation, but he's fucking hilarious in conversation as well. Sirius fucked around too much. They should have locked Patrice down when they had a chance, but they didn't want to spend any money, and now they're paying for it. Radio is dead...

I fell in love with comedians and stand up comedy when I was 10 years old. My step father gave me two Richard Pryor specials he had on vinyl. We watched Eddie Murphy Raw together when it first aired. Yeah, it was fun to tell those jokes to your classmates and get in trouble, but the core was my awe of these bodies of work.
Vicious Circle came out when I was around 30. Laughed my ass off. I knew the level of humor to be expected. It was a blast.
With age and time in the world, you learn more about the pain and tragedy behind great comedians. Learning of the Hicks/Leary theft. Greg Giraldo's tragic death. Chappelle's meltdown. With the exception of Mencia's destruction, it was a lot of reality to take in as a fan.
Norm MacDonald is the only comic that I may irrationally defend, but I'm cool with admitting that.
I fell in love with the anti-humor stuff: Neil Hamburger, Tim & Eric. It struck a chord.
Pulling in this rambling thread: the Dane Cook revelation was more disappointment than anything else. I don't get up in arms about Schumer because it feels like spinning wheels in the mud. More than enough have that covered, it seems.
Enjoy your favorites while you can. I wish I had been up on Patrice while he was alive. Don't let the hacks and bullshit stamp out your funny bone. Life is hard enough as it is to lose that. Don't slay each other in the comments. Crack a smile, brethren. :)

I'm so glad I got to see Patrice regularly back when I was into going to comedy clubs at least once a week back in the day. To me he was one of the greats and it sucks that he didn't get recognized by an audience as large as the one he has now that he's gone while he was still alive. He was just one launch vehicle away from being up there with the top guys(earners) in the business. At the clubs you would assume he was already one by the amount of love and respect he was shown by the other comedians, most club owners and managers and the people that would come out to see him. He did things on his own terms which added to his greatness but also held him back from dominating in the mainstream. Kevin hart is the perfect example of what can happen if you have a great team around you, a strong work ethic and the willingness to play the politics of the game because he's really not anywhere near the natural talent level of a lot of guys but he's smart, is willing to play the game, etc saw an opening with the huge vacuum that Dave chapelle left in his wake when he disappeared and struck at just the right moment and now he fills arenas and makes wildly successful big budget films with actors like the rock.
My opinion is his standup wasn’t great. His banter was. That’s what he’s remembered for.
100%
@@logant44 his stand up was amazing. He was better than all those guys back then.
Kevin pulled his pants down near his ankles for that life… but quality comedy never dies. In Patrice’s case, it can sometimes last longer than the comedian himself.

Right around 2003-4, I saw him put on a good show at the Improv in West Palm Beach. I had a chance to talk to him afterward and he was very personable - seemed like a regular, humble guy who was truly appreciative of his audience.
