    Interesting cabling idea,
    We have a 400W Renogy folding panel (big and heavy, painful to pack and move around, usually just point it north and forget it which is a plus)
    You are right that size is probably more ideal for a caravan / camper.. we camp and use a large Oztent and frankly we could easily get away with 200-300W.. the 400W is big and heavy, if your just in a car 200-300 should kill it

    Hi,
    Good vid on what looks like a good product.
    I am a tech that loves camping and have been playing with solar (for camping) for over 5 years. Have quality 150w bi-fold panel ( now 7 years old and works daily) and recently (12 months ago) purchased from Aldi a folding blanket (from memory 200W).
    Using a enerdrive Solar charger MPPT with a high quality 120amp/h lead acid battery.
    In full sun the old double folding 150W panel (75w per panel) produces 8amps (only degraded by 5%) and solar blanket produces approx 8-9.5 amps (good for a cheap blanket). I run them in parallel and produce on average 15-16amps. Yes this is chasing the sun and on 10m leads.
    On the same day with cloud cover I am only achieve 3 -4 amps charging. Clouds disappear and charge rate into batteries is over 16 amps. This was tested over 6 hours on a day that ranged in temps of 25 degrees to 32 degrees and yes I was chasing the sun.
    As I test for practical applications I have questions:
    1. What is the results in a cloudy day?
    2. What are the results with panels partially covered by canopy cover (trees)?
    3. If 1/3 of one panel is covered, whet is that panels output? What are the affects?
    4: What are the practical results for temperature change? e.g. 30 degree or above day in full sun, cloudy day, or partial canopy cover?
    What are the results at 20 degrees, 10 degrees, 5 degrees etc. for the same as above, full sun, cloudy day, partial canopy coverage.
    I like the high country in Vic and other heavy bush area's (no people haha). All of those temperature ranges occur.
    Love the idea of the product, think the standard price is high but deal is good.
    I would like to see more exact results from the manufacture/retailer and possibly yourself before I am going to replace the existing system I have mentioned above.

      Oh a trick fro jump starting any vehicle if you have a camping solar system and battery. If the main cranking battery for the vehicle is low, connect your dc system to the battery, obviously with ignition off and any other loads. If with full sun allow 1/2 hr to 2 hrs and your cranking battery will start the vehicle. Have done this a couple of times when the cranking battery was depleted and I was remote. The 2 batteries will equalize in voltage (One battery charging another). I have done this with q 150w solar panel and a lead acid 120amp/h battery. same principle will work with a lower rated battery e.g. 40amp/h. It will just take a bit more time...lol

    Allspark gear is good stuff. We got batteries and a solar blanket from them ages back and they are all still working really well. I should know better than buying cheap solar blankets after my experience with Kings (dreadful quality) but I couldn't resist picking up a 200w blanket that Aldi had out today. A bit over $200 so I am hoping it is better than the price might suggest :)

    Any chance they can make one for 4wders who don't have a camper trailer or caravan. One that is smaller is size but still packs a wallop? The 400w one is a bit big for the stand alone 4wder.
    And a side bar... u said the solar regulator can step down the high voltage of the panels. Does that mean for argument sake I can buy a high voltage panel and my enerdrive dcdc will handle the voltage. If this is the case I'm going shopping to upgrade my generic solar panel.

    • @WildTouring
      @WildTouring  8 місяців тому

      You move on to find better weather 🤣
      Nah in all seriousness, generally speaking if it’s overcast cloudy conditions, then I’m probably not running the AC, and fridges are cycling less. So power demands are likely much lower.
      Having said all of that, this panel will still put some current in on cloudy days- obviously just significantly less!

    • @conellisgreatadventure8864
      @conellisgreatadventure8864 8 місяців тому +1

      @@WildTouring it’s certainly a good option. I was hell bent on not having a generator, to me solar isn’t perfect and there will be a couple cloudy days, I get the move on idea but what if you were at Fraser Island. Generator takes some stress out knowing you’ve got a good plan b. I’m also limited to space so can’t carry a lot of fixed folding panels. Also this panel isn’t probably something I want to leave out at base camp if we left for the day, had to secure and easy to pick up and walk off with. I’ve picked up a couple second hand projecta folding panels, they’re really great and if they got knocked off I’ll be mad but not as mad as the 400watt growing legs.

    On the off chance someone out there has a regular little folding 160w panel like I do, you can pretty easily change them from parallel to series as well. This takes the VOC to about 42V which helps big time with your voltage drop also. Just gotta make sure your charge controller is MPPT and can cope with that kind of input voltage. Long cables are awesome.
    Cam, I presume this is why you have two Victron CCs in the vehicle? One for the panels on the roof and the other for the external panels? I was wondering about that in a previous video and hadn't heard your reasoning before.

    • @WildTouring
      @WildTouring  8 місяців тому +1

      You’re bang on! Or like I’ve done in the past- run two portable blankets/panels in series 👍🏼
      Yeah on the car I have one victron solar reg for roof panels, one reg for external Anderson input on tow bar (portable panel) and a Victron DC charger for alternator input.
      Vans setup similarly. 24v Enerdrive DC charger for alternator input AND external input (Anderson plug on draw bar for portable panel), and two victron regs for two strings of solar on the roof.
      So when cars towing the van, can have maximum solar and alternator input at the same time. Which is around 50a from the car and 90a from the van without too much load on the fairly small stock alternator 👍🏼
      And parked up I’ll get around 40a solar input from car and one external panel, and 50a from van.

      And I think you're better off, far more compact, lighter, more robust and cheaper. I'm a huge fan of itech gear.
      Wire this all spark unit at standard 21v input as itech units are and I'm guessing it won't be substantially better than the Itech unit.
      Start opting for higher voltage as done here, your into significantly more expensive controller, that's an additional cost that Cam didn't devolge.
      Absolutely no way I'm paying $900 dollars for such a bulky set up.
      I'd opt to Itech myself.
      Bottom line is, for myself that is, my van is always in full sunlight, never park under trees, seen far too many incidents of massive branches just dropping, red gums do it silently, no warning at all.
      Full sun, full roof solar, no additional panels required for van.
      I do run a cheap Kings folding panel on the car purely because it covers the windscreen blocking sun beating in with side benefit of additional oomph going to battery, yes keep car in full sun also for same reason, hate falling tree limbs.
      I'm not a generator fan, too much disturbance created for others purely for the end users desire for comfort, indulgence. I go silent with my solar input.

      Bias, no just being realistic.
      Query, where would you transport that unit?
      Favouring Itech gear, bias?
      Possibly what you're referring to, unsure. Fact is I've experienced a great run from Itech gear, no issue old mate sourced Itech solar mat/blanket. He's still got a reputable solar product.
      Parking up in open area, no tree shelter, bias?
      No, just retaining battery life and not suffering from limbs descending at a rapid rate.
      Kings solar panel for windscreen, bias?
      Certainly not, it's just as I said, blocks sunlight pouring into vehicle with benefit of additional oomph.
      I'm struggling to see what content you think was bias but I apologise if anyone else thinks likewise.

      Keep in mind once you run it in series it’s no longer 400watts. 43volt will be 200watts. On a victron it actually makes the mppt more efficient. Victron likes to to 5volt above charge voltage to operate. This is why at 41volt it’s working much better, it also uses the extra voltage and coverts to amps. The benefit isn’t from voltage drop it’s from mppt actually working more efficient.
