I think it might be that the rubber doesn't bond itself to aluminium as much as it does steel. Also those bushes didn't have a steel shell which definitely helps.

That's one of the things I love about the P2 chassis; the aluminium subframes (edit, front one is actually galv steel). Such a brilliant move by Volvo at a time when pretty much everyone else was still making theirs out of steel. It means when you look under one of these things now, 20 years later, they still look so much nicer. No rampant rust or peeling chassis paint. And they're lighter when you're dragging them across the floor.
Stuck a magnet on my front subframe and yes, seems you're right, it's galvanised steel. I was working on the rear and assumed the front would be aluminium as well.
I've always had an undying appreciation for the V70 series, I'm still on the hunt for a good V70 N/A, the "R"'s are too hard to find here and when you do, they are extremely expensive in good nick. I wanted to say however, though I've passively worked on cars and trucks my entire life, you have most definitely inspired me to finally pull the trigger and get a V70, I'm dead set. You've also been a tremendous inspiration to myself and a couple of my friends interested in these wonderful wagons. Not only have you shown that you just gotta do it, you've also motivated me and shown me to not be afraid of tackling what seems impossible when working on vehicles. I truly appreciate you making all of the Volvo video series, for being super informative and detailed and well spoken, if not for your content, I don't think I would have moved forward with the decision on a V70. I've worked in an auto parts warehouse. The subframes are pretty heavy. It's great to see you work on this car. It makes me want to find a old Volvo Sedan. I just don't know if I could do a station wagon. Keep up the good work. I love your videos.
Instead of changing bushings you could (at least here in Sweden) drive up to the junkjard and remove the subframe from a Volvo C70, they are famous because instead of subframe bushings they just have solid alumium bushings to compensate for insability that comes with not having a roof and all. But putting this in a V70R makes it obviously little less soft, but way more stability :)
@@bren.nan_ The S60 and V70 have the same subframe, so any mods for one should work on the other. That being said, I don't think the C70 subframe swap works for a P2. That's a good mod for the P80 V70s since the 1st gen C70 was also built on the P80 chassis, but the second gen C70 was a P1 chassis, not a P2, so the subframe won't fit an S60R unfortunately.
hey man, I bought a 2006 2.5 S80 for dirt cheap with over 270k and I have been going through the process of restoring my car in a very similar process to you. Watching you struggle with a lot of the same things I had to struggle with gave me life. I had to individually wrap the spark plug cables with electrical tape because they had decayed like your v70 had. l thank you for the P2 content
I found this channel and have not regretted it , I’m currently on my second Volvo ,moved from S80 to XC60 ,I’m so envious of your V70 but their is something about Volvo I’m glad I found.
you dont have to use red locktite on these bolts, way too much, they dont vibrate and the torque on these will hold them forever, just a lil tip, keep up the cool projects :D !!
One of the only series I’ve kept up with consistently on UA-cam. What’s funny is just a couple days before you uploaded this I did a full front end overhaul on my S70 replacing most the same parts as you 😂, sway bar end links, lower control arms, outer tie rods, etc. I only did the subframe bushing inserts from IPD though because I had to finish it all within the day as the car is my daily so I didn’t have time to fully replace the bushings 😅. Love it! Keep up the good work.
Delrin subframe bushings ftw win, makes the steering response so much better. Anyone wanting to do this, you do not need to drop the subframe to replace the bushings, just do one corner at a time and use an angle grinder or dremel to cut the bushing flat to the subframe, and a very thick flat head screwdriver to pry them out by hammer it in between the bushing and the race on the subframe, you can do each corner in about 15-20 minutes this way and you won't need an alignment after, although given the car was previous aligned with the jello soft bushings I would still get one done after with the new delrin bushings to really dial it back in. Enjoy the R, she looks amazing! My old 04 V70 T5M is on my channel in curious.
@@wheelemverbI suspect they were not original. That was extremely unusual. I've done the job 3x with factory bushings for V70, XC70 and XC90. Factory bushings have a barb holding the bushing in. SoCal non-rust is not an explanation. Something was different there with your car.
Now that the weather is cooler, I will try to tackle this job before it gets too cold. I saw other videos on how to remove the subframe bushings without dropping the subframe and your version seems more practical since I am also changing the sway bar, engine mounts, and subframe bushings. I am just worried about damaging the steering rack since it will be dangling for awhile. Thanks for the inspiration!

As someone who got a 2007 S60 AWD with a 3 inch sketchy straight pipe from the catalyst, these engines makes some seriously sexy sounds, both at idle and when doing a pull. Cant wait to see what comes next!
In this and one of your previous videos, you mentioned planning for a manual swap. The upside of living in California is the lack of rust. Subframe bushings pop out with minimal effort and brake rotors rarely seize on the hub. The downside is that it's the most restrictive state when it comes to vehicle modification. For the manual swap, you'll need to flash the ECM and to reconfigure your CEM. Before you dive in, I'd say find out as much as you can about the implications when it comes to state inspection every two years. You're doing great work on this car and I don't think any of us want to see you run into any nasty surprises. Cheers.
Have done the exact same suspension overhaul to my R two years back, what a difference it made! The only thing that exceeds that excitement is the manual swap 🙂. I did it while overhauling the front suspension, you'll be thrilled after the swap. Looking forward to the m66 swap in future videos!!!
No dude! It's clear that those ball joints didn't seat fully, while you've stressed the aluminum threads of the hub carrier/"knuckle" by using the bolts to pull the bj in. Use the proper bj install/removal tool, it makes a world of difference. And a slide hammer attachment for pulling them out is included too, no need to chisel. For owners of multiple P2's this and the subframe bushing tool are SO worth having. I intend to drive my V70 for decades more -- don't damage things during service.
You're going to have to return to that. Either the driving forces push the bj's further into the knuckle, resulting in loose bolts, or the added leverage of not being fully seated deforms/wallers out that area of the aluminum casting on the hub carrier. You can use an oversize deep impact socket with sledge to drive the bj fully in. Love your channel and respect your work. This won't do unfortunately. You'll have problems there if you don't remedy that bj install.
Might wanna check if the airbag recall was done for the car, sadly the replacement piece won't be the same leather material but least you won't catch any shrapnel

Subscriber and neighbor, owner of an '05 XC in NW Glendale. Love the shots in Angeles Crest and trying to figure out what street(s) your driving! Upgraded brakes to R Brembos, H&R spacers all around to clear the calipers, but vibration took the joy out of the project. So before you invest in new rubber, happy to share what worked for me if you need. Andy's alignment!! (best kept secret) and "When I hop" is now on the rotation. Outstanding work. Peace
I'm running the same spacers, 5mm in front & 15mm in rear. I have different wheels though, so your situation may be different. On my setup, the lip on the spacer that fits into the back of the rim was not a perfect machined tight fit, there's a small amount of play or wiggle room around the circumference of the lip where it fits into the rear of the wheel. If you take off a wheel and place it face down so you're looking at the back of the rim and lay the spacer on the back of the rim, you can see there's a wiggle room between the lip of the spacer and the hub bore of the wheel. That wiggle room meant my wheel was not centered on the hub, causing vibration. My symptoms were different than yours though, I only felt vibration at higher speeds, above 60 mph.
My favorite channel by far, keep the content coming! I have owned around ten volvos now, mostly p2’s and there is just not enough good content out there especially with any sort of modifications. You have single handedly convinced me to keep buying old volvos 🙌

Nice to see that everything is so rust-free. Here in Estonia, even on a 15-year-old Volvo (I own a 2010 XC70 D5), all the suspension parts come loose with lots of hammering or with the help of a torch.
One thing you really should have done is replaced those Monroes with Bilstein touring struts - as you know struts are essential to handling! Never thought of just removing the entire subframe for suspension work - great idea!
Impressed those bushings came out so easily. I'm about to replace mine in my 98 v70 and use the ipd poly inserts, but now you got me thinking I should go with delrin.
Check the wheels are not buckled . You would see that on inner edge or when tyres off and rims on balancer . Alloys are soft and easily bent . I put a set of BOLA B1s on mine and they look super in the off gold standard colour . I run 225 50 17 on mine they are a bit comfier ride than th 45 profiles. i used to fit that size to the speed cop cars years ago when they ran volvo T5s . They look nicer too . They fill the arch better to . I paid £200 for my 2008 2wd t5 with a fault that turned out to be the intercooler after spending a small fortune . The previous owner spent a bit too chasing this fault so it was score . I love it . Mine was an ex cop car so it had plenty scars inside . A friend was scrapping a D5 2005 so i took head lining and interior and loads of other spares so it is very clean inside now . They are great cars . Where could you get a 260hp car for £200 ? The wheels cost more than that .I think i paid 250 for them bola B1s .Loads of people have the focus st over here in the uk (older t5 none vvt) 225 hp , so the wheels being the same 5x 108 stud pattern make it a simple swap . facebook marketplace is the place for that . 😁 i will get some brembos in the future . All tho i have the 316mm D5 ones currently and they are fine .
Yeah, the algorithm gets it right sometimes. I'm not a Volvo guy, despite enjoyin very much some of them, like an sweet V70, bum I'm a car guy and will appreciate good content like this. Congrats dude!
20 seconds in and I see the Textar pads, not the worst but not the best. Next time you come around to swapping pads maybe see if Porterfield has a pad that fits, it’s a compound made for street cars (more made for vintage cars that weigh nothing to help get heat in the pads). They work great on vintage 911’s to modern ones from experience.

I just got a car with blizzak tires. I don’t like the feel on dry roads. Picked up a set of wheels/tires for $80 with all season tires too. Threw them on. Rides nice now

Great upgrade, the Nebulas look great and gives the car a bit more stance. I have 15mm spacers with 19” Heico rims on the R and no rubbing on the wheel arches. 15mm is on the tipping point of good taste…

The front subframe is steel.
Galvanized steel. Front bonnet only is aluminum, all 4 hub carriers too. Rear trunk is fiberglass.

@@bren.nan_ The S60 and V70 have the same subframe, so any mods for one should work on the other. That being said, I don't think the C70 subframe swap works for a P2. That's a good mod for the P80 V70s since the 1st gen C70 was also built on the P80 chassis, but the second gen C70 was a P1 chassis, not a P2, so the subframe won't fit an S60R unfortunately.

One thing you really should have done is replaced those Monroes with Bilstein touring struts - as you know struts are essential to handling! Never thought of just removing the entire subframe for suspension work - great idea!

Impressed those bushings came out so easily. I'm about to replace mine in my 98 v70 and use the ipd poly inserts, but now you got me thinking I should go with delrin.

nice clean install, nice build, everything was so neat and clean. bushings came off effortlessly. really nice!! keep up the good work.
Check the wheels are not buckled . You would see that on inner edge or when tyres off and rims on balancer . Alloys are soft and easily bent . I put a set of BOLA B1s on mine and they look super in the off gold standard colour . I run 225 50 17 on mine they are a bit comfier ride than th 45 profiles. i used to fit that size to the speed cop cars years ago when they ran volvo T5s . They look nicer too . They fill the arch better to . I paid £200 for my 2008 2wd t5 with a fault that turned out to be the intercooler after spending a small fortune . The previous owner spent a bit too chasing this fault so it was score . I love it . Mine was an ex cop car so it had plenty scars inside . A friend was scrapping a D5 2005 so i took head lining and interior and loads of other spares so it is very clean inside now . They are great cars . Where could you get a 260hp car for £200 ? The wheels cost more than that .I think i paid 250 for them bola B1s .Loads of people have the focus st over here in the uk (older t5 none vvt) 225 hp , so the wheels being the same 5x 108 stud pattern make it a simple swap . facebook marketplace is the place for that . 😁 i will get some brembos in the future . All tho i have the 316mm D5 ones currently and they are fine .

I like how the tie rods just pop out when unbolted. No hammering involved like american cars.
20 seconds in and I see the Textar pads, not the worst but not the best. Next time you come around to swapping pads maybe see if Porterfield has a pad that fits, it’s a compound made for street cars (more made for vintage cars that weigh nothing to help get heat in the pads). They work great on vintage 911’s to modern ones from experience.

I just got a car with blizzak tires. I don’t like the feel on dry roads. Picked up a set of wheels/tires for $80 with all season tires too. Threw them on. Rides nice now

I have 15mm spacers with 19” Heico rims on the R and no rubbing on the wheel arches. 15mm is on the tipping point of good taste…
