- It's official! Fantasy Flight Games has released STAR WARS UNLIMITED, a trading card game set in George Lucas' beloved universe, and it's BLOWING UP like the Death Star in Episode IV. And Episode VI. And Episode VII... or was that Starkiller Base? Whatever. All the Death Stars.
Annnnd Jarom can't help but review it. He's been playing nothing else for the past two weeks.

Oh, and there's a card game that they're a part of. We suppose that's worth talking about, as well.

I quite enjoyed the handful of games I played, and really feel like this one gets so much right. It's fun to be living in the TCG renaissance where the games are actually good vs the 90s when they were...bad. Turns out 20+ years of mechanics to draw from makes for a much more nutritious and filling meal.
What I really don't like are the price tags following the Lorcana debacle and how cautious most people are being around the game, which is potentially stunting its growth and survivability. It's kept me from diving in and actually buying any cards for myself yet.

There's really good arguments why this might be a good game, like the Initiative is as cool a mechanique like Death's Door is in Sorcery. And FFG have a good track record designing good games. Also the alternating action economy is very very nice, Altered was announced around the same time and uses a very similar system and both games' gameplay does benefit from it!
But for TCGs I am not sure how familiar you are with the space but some of your arguments can't actually catch on too well I think. Regarding use of commons and uncommons, it's the first set of course the majority of archetypes are built on their shoulders. But this game does not have inbuilt prevention for decks getting substituted by majorily rare cards later on. Look at Altered and Flesh and Blood, the latter does it the best with sidegrades of cards not being existent in the highest rarities. These decks will need the synergy and consistence provided by commons and uncommons to a very high degree. So this is atm true but it doesn't really say anything if you observe TCGs over a couple examples. Also I doubt the quantity of cards will influence prices that much, and even less could it be cheaper than average because of that. Box prices, drop rate of high rarity cards and total count of high rarity cards you can obtain from a box will determine your EV spread for the box and if you got an incredible card you need 3 of for a playset well that doesn't directly translate to lower prices compared to Lorcana or Magic.
So it's no issue to release a biased review, we mostly concern ourselves with games we like and choose to tolerate some aspects others might at first glance not like, but I fear these are arguments that are weaker than average and I hope people don't end up feeling sold on incorrect expectations. Overall an enjoyable review though!

Great review. I live in Argentina and sadly the game didnt get to here. I was able to buy the 2 player starter so i can play with my gf and some friends, but i dont think i will be expanding my decks at least foir a while. I hope someday they bring the game here, or at least the prices to import it get lower..

Not as available. In my country and in surrounding countries, I believe they haven't licensed any LGS to officially sell the product.
!!!! Well, that is extremely lame. 😕 I hope FFG sends some your way soon, so you have the option to try it.
Without knowing what country you're in, I can't offer any advice other than to say it does appear there has been support for EU countries, including editions printed in (I think) French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
Unfortunately while I did just look for one, I wasn't able to find a definitive list of what non-English languages and International regions the game is available in.
I'm single and looking to get my heart broken with this one. My wallet is already sad.

It's fun... but FFG will ruin the game like they have everything else. Game is fun, just bear in mind the cards you love now will be rotated out in 6 months to a year and eventually FFG will either ruin the game with rules changes or give up the licence.
I'm hoping they go the Marvel Champions route and keep the good things going 🤞🤞 we don't need another Destiny/Star Wars LCG/Netrunner mess. I'm optimistic with this one (clearly) but only time will tell.
@@JumbleAndGaff While a lot of LGS's and online sellers are selling cards for obscene prices.. none I know seem to be buying any... that's quite telling.
