WYRMSPAN REVIEW (Does it 'Fix' Wingspan?)

  • Stonemaier Games released WYRMSPAN, a reimagining of the hit board game WINGSPAN, last week, and Jarom's here to review it!
Given that Wingspan is about as universal as a board game can be (without turning into Monopoly or Candyland), he's assuming you've played it before, and jumping straight into a comparative review of Wyrmspan, presenting its innovations to the original game of birds 'n eggs without bothering to explain its basic rules.
It's a gamble! We hope you find this video comprehensible and entertaining despite the color balance and the focus issues.
All rights for the Jurassic Park soundtrack, of course, belong to John Williams.

Not knowing who is winning is a feature not a bug. This is not a game to be concerned about winning the whole time. This is a game to casually enjoy a puzzle while chatting with friends, and then enjoy the surprise of seeing how everyone did at the end.

I agree, also the statement "you would have scored those 2 points to make up the difference" why didnt you score that in the first place anyways??

I agree about the eggs being problematic for the theme. In Wingspan, I can at least make up stories--we are trading eggs we have for eggs we want or we are removing eggs of some species to make sure there's room in our sanctuary for other species. Wyrmspan falls apart quite a bit in the theme for me, my favorite ridiculousness being that apparently all the cool hatchlings (well, *all* the hatchlings) are cosplaying mammals (they all need milk). I actually prefer to teach Wingspan because I can use the theme to help the actions make sense. Unlike you, apparently, I find that in Wyrmspan I need caves, resources, and dragons all the same time--you can put off getting resources for a while by getting cave cards, but then you really can't. It feels like you need caves and resources to entice dragons, but you can't get efficient at getting those things until you get dragons. Also, you can still have personal goals, but they're harder to remember because they're on the guild board or on your dragons as end-of-game powers. And maybe you don't lose cards to get starting resources, but you still have to lose starting dragons to keep caves or vice versa. I also prefer Wingspan because there are so many strategies that can work, whereas in Wyrmspan it feels like you' can't really specialize (it costs extra to explore the same cave over and over). It seems like you need at least 2 dragons in every cave, and you'll want a hatchling to take advantage of whatever benefit you get from filling a cave, and you also want at least one dragon with space for lots of eggs in case you get that opportunity. It feels all about trying to grab some of everything to me.

Can’t believe you got a real dragon to endorse the video- very well done. I hope he was paid handsomely for his cameo.
    Great review!

I'm surprised we got him on board with the project, tbh, actors of his stature are rare and in endless demand.

    Nice review comparing these games!
I own and have played both of these games and you are spot on. I actually find that the puzzle in Wyrmspan to be a little trickier because of the emphasis on sequencing your actions - caves, resources, eggs, dragons. You notnonly have to have the right components, but also have them in the right quantity and in the right order. The extra turn required to place caves before dragons makes the game tighter.
    Thank you for your content!!
    Thank you!

13:49 Manipulating the food dice was actually one of my favorite parts of Wingspan! I gave it an 8/10. It's a decent tableau engine builder. The art carries the game in my view, it'd be a 7/10 without it. Wyrmspan doesn't seem to make any meaningful changes or improvements.

Glad you like the food dice! :) they and I have had a rather.... tempestuous sort of relationship 😂

I hope to play Wyrmspan so I can see which one I like better… I do like to play Windspan. Thanks for the review!

I know the eggs are a weird function, apparently in both games, but they are so dang cute a game piece that I admit I give them slack 😂
But also good to know! I’ll have to give Wyrmspan a go.

Mysterious they might be, but they ARE adorable AND edible (looking), and that cannot be refuted.

Great review! imo Wingspan with all the expansions is the better game but for a base game vs base game experience wyrmspan takes the lead. It does feel wrong to tell new players you need to buy all the expensive expansions to fully enjoy wingspan though

I'm just not sure that this game makes sense to play (Context I have only played wingspan). A gathering of people is supposed to be interactive, and there is absolutely nothing interactive about these games. Essentially wingspan/wyrmspan are a group of people playing solo games with maybe the occasional brush of shoulders. I would think that if people over the age of thirty had heard of discord or something to hang out and chat while doing your own thing the games would never sell. (I know, playing board games is an excuse for an alcoholic beverage but still kinda want my game to be actually multiplayer)

Rereading this it seems like I hate the game but rather I am just more confused why it became popular. I myself am not opposed to talking over a board game.

You really think that there is no value in being physically together? Do you think all restaurants will soon go out of business?

There are many like my wife who really don't like 'take that' in games. I see it in content creators (Rahdo, Garrett's Games and Geekiness, etc.) and in comments as well as with some friends. For those people, the puzzle and engine building are the fun of the game along with the social aspect of getting together.
There are games for them just as there are games for people who love to attack each other. I enjoy both differing experiences.
Because of the success of these game and others (Castles of Burgundy, Patchwork, 7 Wonders, etc.) plus co-op games (Pandemic, etc.) , I would suggest that there are more gamers like my wife than you might think.

Thanks for sharing! @samirjafri191 really summed it up beautifully, but this is an irresistible conversation topic for me, so...
I think a lot of people find a lot of joy in gathering and engaging in the same activity, even if (for many, perhaps *especially* if) that activity doesn't bring them into direct conflict with one another.
I personally tend to get competitive about Wingspan-- hence my gripe about score tracking-- but many people aren't concerned about that at all; they just enjoy sharing one another's company for an hour or two, and I think that's lovely.

Fantastic video guys! As to how to fix the whole point thing, I’d say that using counters could work. After each players turn, they add however many points they earned on that turn to the counter, then keeping track of their points throughout the game :)

Well explained and entertaining. (Not sure why your video looks flat and relatively colourless, unless that was your design decision.)

This was my first video after upgrading my camera-- still figuring out the 'white balance' part of editing. 😂 with any luck, in the next one, I'll look a lot less like I spent the last few years in an iceberg 🤣 thanks so much for giving it a watch/listen notwithstanding!
