      @bryankia I'm just joking. I don't think the boxes I bought were a mistake. I probably could have made that clearer. I'm heading to my first real event tomorrow afternoon and I'm really looking forward to it. I may even end up buying another box.

    #4 is so important, I think a big way to develop as a beginning player is learning when to take initiative. You also need to know your deck, some decks benefit more from initiative vs playing out with more units.

    Playing out-of-aspect cards - I once added a few to my deck, but their purpose was ONLY as resources. If I drew them, I knew they'd be used as a resource. Basically the same as "Land" in MTG - their only purpose is as Land/Resources. It was only in a Limited/Draft situation but it can work.

    • @TowerNumberNine
      @TowerNumberNine  10 місяців тому +1

      Fair point -- if you didn't actually draft enough playables in your aspects that might be a good move!

    • @Stricken314

      I generally agree, but I have found a few exceptions. Notably, the 4-Cost double color events (Vigilance, Command, Cunning, and Aggression). Playing those for 6 is quite often worth doing, especially since you can add a third color to your deck. Also, Force Throw is still incredible when played for 3.

    re #5: I played draft today, and ran Bodhi in a yellow-red deck. The aspect penalty for the second yellow made him a 5-drop, but getting to mid-game remove a key card from my opponent's hand is incredibly powerful in limited, and he advances the board state to do so. I could only imagine playing him for 3 in limited.

      Agree... there are just some super efficient cards that don't hurt to pay 2 extra... e.g. in a Boba Deck Green (that inherently generates resources during your turn) deck that I am playing, I do sometimes blend in a Cunning.

    For Mistake 2, my understanding is you can use a leaders ability then deploy them and they are still come out ready. Is that your understanding and if so, that seems like a pretty good idea to do.
    For Mistake 3, I don't know if I'm using Ambush right. If I play a card with Ambush am I allowed to attack with it the same action? So I paly the card and declare a target? Or do I have to wait until my odonate takes an action before attacking?

    • @TowerNumberNine
      @TowerNumberNine  10 місяців тому +1

      Re: 2 -- yes, you can use a leader's ability and then deploy them and they arrive ready. A deployed leader arrives ready even if it was exhausted previously. Often this is a good thing to do though it depends on situational factors.
      Re: 3 -- yes, Ambush units attack in the same action as when they are played -- though they can only attack units and not the enemy base (and indeed if there isn't a unit to attack they don't even get to ready). This makes Ambush very useful in removing opposing units before they get a chance to act.

  • @Tvboy777
    @Tvboy777 10 місяців тому +1

    How about announcing leader epic action when you don't have enough resources in play? I've heard that if you do that, RAW you just don't get deploy your leader for the entire game.

    • @TowerNumberNine
      @TowerNumberNine  10 місяців тому

      I think that's RAW correct but I've never seen anyone actually do it and I seriously doubt that people would in practice be held to that standard.
      (I *have* seen people try to use a base on an illegal target -- things like trying to use Tarkintown on a leader or a unit that isn't damaged -- but in practice people seem to accept takebacks in such a case rather than "too bad, you wasted it")

  • @NerdydanDotCom
    @NerdydanDotCom 10 місяців тому

    Playing leader should absolutely not be the first action, especially if you can use the leader action first. With Grand Inquisitor in a draft tournament, my turns were often "ping unit for 2 with GI to ready that unit, next action attack with that unit, then ready the GI, then attack with the GI (pinging another unit) It really helped make my turn 6 big.

    One of the mistakes i see now is that certain leaders have continued to build upon the shakey foundations they were built on when the cardpool was incomplete,.instead of reassessing and taking a different approach.

    • @TowerNumberNine
      @TowerNumberNine  10 місяців тому

      Interesting point! Do you have any specific examples in mind?

    • @owlxoggest6247

      @@TowerNumberNine the most glaring one I see is Aggression Leia. Once Rebel Assault dropped Sabine took over the Red/green aggro slot, regardless if that is the best version of Sabine. All the Leia decks I see are still forcing red and aggro, when it seems like Cunning or Vigilance are better options for her

    • @justinsengstock8471
      @justinsengstock8471 10 місяців тому

      @@owlxoggest6247 : Hard to argue that Red isn't the color best suited for Leia as an aggressive leader. The red suite of fast, aggressive rebel units synergizes with her extremely well. Honestly the only reason I see Sabine green edging out Leia red for the strongest aggro deck is just that energy conversion lab is much more impactful for that strategy than Tarkintown.
      I can see some argument for yellow, as Sabine yellow was a fairly common rush pairing prior to the last few green hero cards getting spoiled and pushing green over the top. Can't see much mileage out of blue though, Vigilance plays a very different game plan than what Leia seems suited for.

    • @owlxoggest6247
      @owlxoggest6247 10 місяців тому

      @@justinsengstock8471 I just don't see it as being that clear cut anymore. The full cardpool has reinforced Sabine's place as aggro while opening up more options for Leia. This doesn't mean that Leia-red isn't a good deck, but, if you're playing green-red aggro competitively, you want the best green-red aggro deck in the meta, and that's Sabine. Leia's attack action advantage is very strong, but it's only as strong as the attacks you are making. Yellow and Blue give her more robust rebels to play and more options at controlling the board with something other than throwing raw damage at things.
      The mistake I am pointing out is that some of the archetypes that have been established as "the best" when we were dealing with an incomplete cardpool, might inadvertently impede newer players looking to enter a more competitive environment or more casual players that are looking to try to make the best showing they can with their favorite leader. If I was a Leia fan and wanted to take her to a tourney and all I got for advice was play red-aggo, only to get out aggroed by Sabine green, I'd be a little frustrated.
      I see Leia as being closer to midrange than the aggro leader she was initially thought to be.

    • @TowerNumberNine
      @TowerNumberNine  10 місяців тому

      I don't like it. The combo is cool but card draw isn't that important in this game IMO, and C-3PO is a lot less exciting when played on turn three instead of turn one.

    Can't you take actions and then take initiative after?

    • @TowerNumberNine
      @TowerNumberNine  10 місяців тому +1

      Yes, but often taking unnecessary actions will give your opponent the opportunity to take the initiative before you can do so, meaning they'll end up going first next turn.

    SWH_Comp_Rules v1_1_304 Section 12 Item 2 subsection A - "A player can Take the Initiative as their action on their turn, taking control of the initiative counter and flipping it to its “taken” side
    (the side without text). Only one player can do this per round, and once they do, they must “pass” for any actions they would take for
    the rest of the action phase"
    In other words taking the initiative turn 1 stops you from doing anything that round. You're opponent may not have known this but you, making a youtube video on it, SHOULD know better. You are literally telling people that you cheated in tournaments and they should too.

      @@MSDuelist Ah, my apologies if that was unclear. Taking initiative is good for setting up removal on the next turn, not for doing things this turn -- after all, you have to pass after doing it!
