    Just found this video. Haven’t Smoked a pipe in over a decade, but during my last house move I found my box of pipes and it’s been calling to me lately. Seems you have all of the same interests I do, so I am looking forward to your future videos about pipes, motorcycles, cars and bicycling. Thank you for providing this content!

    I just purchased 8 oz. Of cavendish from Boswell pipe in Pa. It’s called paradise . I added a few oz. To some of my other tobacco’s it made some of them a much more enjoyable smoke. I first smoke paradise straight and it was great. No tongue bite. IMHO,Russ

    New to your channel; been liking your videos :)
    I inherited an old Medico pipe from my late great uncle that dates back to the 50’s and I had to do a lot of restoration on it. I’m also newish to the pipe and this was my first briar. What I did to clean the stem, which was also really bad, was to let it soak in a ziplock with alcohol and salt and I would shake it up every so often. The salt with the alcohol does a really good job of breaking all that nastiness up.
    I had to do this several times, but eventually it was clean, and it hasn’t lost any shine.
    I did a similar thing with the bowl, filling the bowl with salt and then pouring in the alcohol and letting it sit. Did that several times, and then reamed it. And I only wiped the outside of the bowl with alcohol.
    I’m not expert but pretty happy with how it turned out. Although I’ve noticed that the tobacco tastes better out of a cob than in the Medico. Maybe it needs to be teamed out even more, I don’t know 🤷🏻‍♂️ I wasn’t really sure how much to ream.
    Anyone have any advice on that?

    I've been smoking pipes since the mid 70's, I started with a pipe and tobacco I bought at the (now Gone) Tinder Box Store. My journay has been off and on and in my later years I equate pipe smoking as My Prozac Time. I would much rather smoke a pipe than be addicted to all the anti-depression meds that doctors try and push on you. Keep on Puffin and Relaxing. Great Video, thank you

    This is a great video! I could definitely relate to a lot of the things you said when i started smoking a pipe. i decided to take on pipe smoking for the same reason as you. I, too, think that it's a lost art and it was the sophistication and character that drove me to it. My family was going to leave me for a month and i couldn't go with them due to work so I thought it would be a good time to start a new hobby. Now, 3 years later, I have kept at it and I'm glad to see new guys coming aboard. So keep on doing your vids because you really did a great job on this first one!

      My parents were very opposed to smoking, and I felt that as a minister and school master it might set a bad example - so I only smoked in the privacy of my own home. 18 months ago I heard Alan Harrelson saying that you need to be prepared to be known as “the guy who smokes a pipe!” and I thought - I’m ready for that now, and I thank God for it!

      That light headed sensation is likely from the nicotine hit. As newcomers, we’re a lot more sensitive to nicotine than the veterans. The first time I felt that was when I was smoking in my car. The moment I stepped out, I felt like I was about to topple over. The feeling was disconcerting to say the least. I didn’t feel it at all while sitting in the car though. If you want to less of the nic-hit, I would suggest making sure you’re well fed before partaking in the pipe.

    Welcome brother! Great intro. You seem very natural in front of the camera. I really like the Irish seconds. It's a great shape. The magic eraser is fine to use on the stem. You just have to buff it afterwards as you would with any treatment I'm aware of to remove oxidation. These days I stick to buying acrylic stem pipes because I'm lazy🤣 Many on here enjoy motorcycles as well as pipes so you will find friends with that in common. Welcome! Tongue bite will get better with time as you grow in the hobby. Every blend is different as well. I know when I was starting out I wanted to try EVERYTHING because you hear a lot of "find your blend". Out of those 4-5 blends you mentioned pick one that you enjoy and finish it. This will teach you as you change your technique with each session how the flavor and taste change. It took me a long time to figure that out. HA! An example, I absolutely love the smell of Fr. Dempsy and tried to go back to it over and over, and no matter what I did I would always scorch my mouth in the first 3rd of the bowl. So, I would go back to a burley and everything would be fine, and the next Fr. Dempsy bowl I'd scorch again. I guess the point I am making is don't get discouraged if you run into a blend that doesn't like you. It can be overcome or you will find another. The sheer number of blends out there is daunting. One piece of advice, don't fall into the black hole of CigarBid right off the bat until you find what you like and are shopping for a specific couple of blends. You can end up with a tote of tins that you have never tried but snagged for a "good deal". Regardless, welcome to the brotherhood!

    • @BikesandBriar
      @BikesandBriar  Рік тому +1

      Oh man, I wish I had the patience and attention span you do, to finish a blend before trying others. I picked up many different tins to try them all and help narrow down my preferences. But you might be on to something. I think I’ll take your advice to heart and complete what I have jarred with 2oz bulk before I crack open any tins. I have a feeling the flavors will change even sticking with one blend. Thanks your your help!

    Very good fist video, so I subscribed! No religion or politics, so right up my street. What a coincidence, I am a "reborn" (sorry sounds religious) occasional pipe smoker, ride a Royal Enfield and also a a number of classic steel bicycles. I am in MA, although from the UK and recently sold a Hetchins cycle to someone in the Bay area. I would ride the Eroica if i lived where you do!
    You do need a subject beyond the pipe as there is only so much you can say before it all repeats. I have also found getting the pipe smoking right and avoiding tongue bite, which totally ruins the whole thing for me, is very much an issue. Black tea with lemon neutralizes the alkaline effect of the tobacco and I find and learning to "sip" takes practice.
    Looking forward to this channel!

      GC! Thank you for reaching out and for your well thought out response!
      I’ve always had a soft spot for Royal Enfield. They’re timeless classics! I’m especially fond of the ones that are attached to a sidecar. I know it would feel weird compared to a regular bike, but I’ve always wanted to ride one of those.
      Steel bicycles still have a place in this world of fancy aluminum and carbon fiber. I love them for long rides on bumpy backroads. They’re far less punishing and more compliant than the other two! I’ll never ride a steel tandem again though… on my maiden voyage on one, the rear had a tendency to wag its tail over bumps on a long, fast descent. Scary! 😬 I’ll stick with the stiffer bikes for those shenanigans.
      Thank you for the reassurance on covering different topics from pipe smoking. I was concerned about having a multi-subject channel.
      Next time I smoke, I’ll try some tea. Great idea!

Unfortunately, smoking in Tokyo is restricted to designated smoking areas, which are few and far between. F! Vulcanite stems hate moisture. I’ve made mistakes with mine as well. I can’t recall where, but people sell a buffing compound and oil for vulcanite stems and you can bring one back reasonably well by hand, but it takes a little work.
    Best of luck on the tongue bite. You’re on the right track. You need the tobacco dried a bit more, and sloooooow sips.

      I have watched almost all of his essential how-to videos. The breath method doesn’t work for me. I’ve tried. I will continue to try. But I don’t get more flavor from retro-haling. And if I breathe through my nose while I slowly draw, my throat gets irritated for a few days afterwards. I’ve found that if I draw little sips, and let the smoke slowly escape my mouth, I smell the smoke and taste the flavors more prominently.
      I was gifted a few corncob pipes, and have smoked them a few times. I love them!

    How do you smoke a pipe slowly? I'm asking cause I'm a beginner pipe smoker as well and think I'm smoking too fast as well.

    • @BikesandBriar
      @BikesandBriar  8 місяців тому

      Excellent question, Daniel. I hope other, far more experienced guys and gals will chime in and respond with their knowledge and experience, as mine is limited.
      What I can share, is what I’ve learned so far. And that is, that you sip the pipe, slowly, much like you’re sipping the straw of your favorite drink. Pretend you want that glass of your favorite drink to last a really long time.
      If you’re drawing on the pipe often, and with any type of force, you will lose a lot of the flavor of the tobacco - which is defeating the purpose of smoking a pipe, and as a by product of drawing like that, you also get the dreaded tongue bite.
      What I’ve learned is that slow, really means slow. “Sip” ever so slightly. Maybe every 5 seconds or so. Take your time. It’s not meant to be rushed. This was the hardest part for me in the beginning, and sometimes still is.
      The slower you are, the more flavor you’ll get from your pipe & tobacco.

  • @MrFredstt

    I tried and I couldn't get the hang of it. Tongue bite, couldn't keep it lit, and the tobacco didn't really seem to have much of a flavor to it. However, I don't want to let one bad experience put me off it entirely. I'll have to give it another go

    • @BikesandBriar
      @BikesandBriar  Рік тому +1

      I’m not the right guy to be offering advice, but I’ll share what I’ve learned so far, from the community who’ve helped me since I started.
      Tongue bite mainly comes down to two things:
      1. Drawing too often or too hard.
      2. Tobacco is too moist.
      Both of these together will most definitely result in an unpleasant experience.
      If you find a way to mitigate those two things, you’ll find bliss with the pipe.
