I just found your channel, sir, and after watching a couple of your videos I feel like I've met a new friend, a kindred spirit. To be still is an art that escapes so many today. I need to consciously remind myself to slow down, and my pipe is a great help. Unlike other forms of smoking, pipes involve a process which forces one to slow down and focus on the task at hand... selecting the pipe and tobacco, packing the bowl, lighting, tamping, relighting, tending to the embers... One cannot be in a hurry and properly smoke a pipe. It's a contradiction. Thank you for your thoughts and creating a worthwhile corner in the Internet.
What a wonderful find. As an equally inveterate pipe smoker, I can thank the UA-cam algorithm for bringing this brilliant video to my attention. Bravo, sir. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
I love the fact that Escudo and Deluxe Navy Rolls still exist. The sailors used to make these style rolls themself from stripped leaf. They tied them into a bundle with sail cloth and rope and let it mature for months at sea, occasionally moistening it with rum or water. Then, when deemed ready a coin was sliced off and either chewed or rubbed out to smoke. Most certainly in a well worn clay pipe.
I'm often asked why in the world do I smoke a pipe ? I guess because you won't see many puffers where I live... I wish I could explain it to them even half as well as you. I always look for your pipes in the background and try and spot any additions! Thank you for sharing this sir... Brilliant!

a long time ago i stumbled onto Alan Watts who mentioned something about peoples fear of sitting quietly with their own thoughts as opposed to constantly surrounding themselves with noise, whether its talking, television, music or some kind of background racket. he pointed out how it's almost irrational to simply sit quietly and explore your mind. meditation in other words, but not really? he was encouraging his (i guess they were students?) to give it a try. just be quiet, be still, and think. i am not a meditator but i am a "sit quietly and think"-er and i always have been. i just never realized until that day that it can be a struggle for others. i simply avoid noisy people whenever possible. so anyway, it was also around this time that i mentioned this rambling line of thought to my son, who was around 12 or 13 at the time, and how it intrigued me and gave me something else to sit quietly and think about... my son took it to heart and still will turn off all his devices and music and just sit in his room and think. he came to me shortly after that particular discussion to tell me he had taken that same philosophy to his friends. one of them was confused ... but actually gave it a shot. apparently he turned off the noise, sat in a chair in his room and explored his own thoughts for about an hour. his conclusion was that it was WEIRD.... yet... satisfying. He was able to sort out a lot of problems (what problems could a 13 year old possibly have? lol) but he ultimately liked the results. ironic isn't it? you can get a lot done by doing nothing!
One of my fondest childhood memories is walking into my grandparents' living room and seeing my grandfather sitting in his favorite chair, deerskin bound Bible open in his lap (King James, of course!). I was fascinated by the stratum of smoke suspended in the room as he thoughtfully drew on his pipe while reading. I can still see Grandpa's gentle face, pipe in his mouth.
Ok, but what about the realization that if he hadn't smoked then he may have lived longer since it is known that smoking is harmful to health in more than one way?

We are severely underexposed to high-brow poetry in these times. There’s a modicum to be had in hip-hop I suppose, also in the various folk musics, but it just isn’t quite the same as a calm recitation from a page. Your channel is a great respite and an excellent resource for this increasingly niche artistic medium. Thank you for your contribution to it. I am blessed to have a day off tomorrow and I hope to fire up a pipe. You’ve got my heart set on an Escudo Navy Roll.

Malcolm; this was fun. Enjoyed the thoughts about pipe-smoking. I love that woodcut! Some time ago, you inspired me to get a zippo to light my pipe. Speaking of inspiration, I've got a Fender amp sitting in my office as well :-). Cheers!
When I started my career, my mentor, Peter was more than thrice my then twenty years of age... Like yourself he would always impart learning and wisdom with the ritual of filling, lighting and then puffing his pipe to gather his thoughts.
I recently discovered your channel and I watch this while smoking my own Peterson pipe on my back porch in Florida this breezy and comfortable evening listening to frogs and birds in the pond and distant barking dogs. The rumble of a train and some cars further off. Quite wonderful, and thank you for your time.
Sherlock Holmes indeed! As a young man I took up pipe smoking because I thought it gave me character and gravitas. Mostly, it gave me a sore tongue. But I loved it anyway and smoked for quite a while. I lived in Chicago at the time and was very fond of the custom, aromatic Three Star blends from the downtown tobacconist Iwan Reese. Three Star Blue was my favorite of all and it was reasonably priced in those days, the halcyon 1960s and '70s. Then, smoking was allowed, even welcome, everywhere. If someone in a bar or restaurant was leery of a pipe smoker being nearby, once I had lit up and got the pipe going, they were not only surprised at the depth and beauty of the aroma, they often complimented me and said they never knew a pipe could smell so good. I went so far as to carve my own Meerschaum in a Danish style and I was quite pleased by the result. Eventually, my wife needed to quit smoking cigarettes and I put my pipes aside to help her. I don't regret that decision, but I often miss the relaxing ritual of filling, lighting, smoking and minding a pipe.
I was gifted my first pipe, which i had intimated to a friend, this last Christmas past. It has instinctively taken its rightful place,as a place of peace, joy and refuge from the mad bad world. Your poem was beautiful, and sums up my feelings exactly,so i need add no more, except to say, thankyou for sharing your truths. I will look up Ordinary Saints,as i would like to have a hard copy. God bless, and best wishes.
How delightful a video on an otherwise rather abrasive platform. I've been considering taking up the pipe myself, and I do think that I may have made a decision at last.
I love you sir... the same way most of us love our traditions and heritage. You are a living, breathing, gateway to why we have our culture and our love of family and God. Thank you
Malcolm, take this as a high compliment: this video came on when I was in the other room, and as I walked in I heard you reading before I saw that it was you. Prior to getting the visual, I thought I was about to round the corner and see Oliver Reed. Well done, sir! Cheers!
I have watched several of Malcomb's videos and readings. They so full of content and his own brand of 'laid back and relaxed' vibe. His love and promotion of pipe smoking is not at all offensive or politically incorrect. As a fellow Tolkien lover, I do enjoy his readings. He does, however, remind me so much of the head Orangutan in the first Planet of the Apes movie... so adorable.
I smoke cigars with business colleagues, in clubs, or in a city park, or out on the golf course. I smoke a pipe in the summers sitting by camp fires or reading on the front porch in the rain, in autumn walking in the changing forests and in winter by the fire with the wind and ice howling outside.

I have been blessed to have a teacher who is so dedicated in his craft and his faith which has done nothing but reinforced my pursuits into history, English and religion in my life. I am planning to study history and English in university with plans on later becoming a secondary school teacher. You inspired me to recreate the inklings as a book club at my school, where we discuss Christian literature, read Tolkien and Lewis and much more. You really are a true gem with such a relaxed but wisdom filled persona!! Thank you for all of your videos, they are so inspiring. Are you planning any events in Toronto, Canada??? If not would you be willing to join a zoom call and provide my club an introduction for the inklings??? I would truly appreciate this!!! P.S I have commited to the art of pipe smoking once I hit 50 or when I get my phd!!!! Take care Mr. Guite!! Nicholas C.
You should try lighting the pipe with hemp wick. A hemp string dipped in beeswax, sufficient to carry a flame. When you light it with a zippo, you are getting the flavor of the butane as well, particularly when you have to light and puff on it several times over to get it cherry and rolling.
One of my favorites:
A pipe, a book, a cozy nook,
A fire (at least its embers)
A dog, a glass, tis such we pass
The hours that one remembers.
Very nice!
My shoulders just lowered and my blood pressure went down.
Thank you.

my son took it to heart and still will turn off all his devices and music and just sit in his room and think. he came to me shortly after that particular discussion to tell me he had taken that same philosophy to his friends. one of them was confused ... but actually gave it a shot. apparently he turned off the noise, sat in a chair in his room and explored his own thoughts for about an hour. his conclusion was that it was WEIRD.... yet... satisfying. He was able to sort out a lot of problems (what problems could a 13 year old possibly have? lol) but he ultimately liked the results.
ironic isn't it? you can get a lot done by doing nothing!
A wonderful picture. I just love your channel Mr. Malcom. Thank you.
@@StopFear Yes, this is true. I suppose he may have lived beyond his 84 years had he not worked at a chemical plant until age 65, or had he not worked in a coal mine in his youth. Psalm 139:16
@@hsh1950 a good long life regardless.
@@StopFear then you don't know anything about pipe or cigar smoking. You don't inhale it like a cigarette. It's purely for taste. The fda did a study on cigars and pipes and concluded that don't affect your health whatsoever
@@skatingsam96 wouldn't it still be bad for your teeth? Or would brushing after fix that?
Wonderful burnt offerings indeed... Thank you, Malcolm!
That was excellent! I sit with Peterson watching curls twist and turn upward, I am thankful.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful essay with us. Watching you so masterfully read it as I watch the sun go down while having a bowl of english tobacco in a Peterson and a good coffee. And being thankful to God for peaceful moments like these. Slainte!
I do love your style & and way you present your Vids. Nothing I enjoy more than firing up and sitting listening/ watching you 😊
Being an American traditionalist, I’m partial to the corncob pipe myself, but I’m glad to have stumbled upon this video and your channel. It’s so easy to get caught up in the world and forget to take time and enjoy life.
An interesting and enjoyable video. I also smoke a pipe and along with my two dogs find myself in a contempaltive frame of mind. Thank you for this.
I really, really enjoyed that. An oasis in a world that seems to insist that everything you do should have a purpose and be done in a rush.
I do these things in order to do nothing. What a great motto for every pipe smoker.
I do love your videos. Such a peaceful feeling watching them.
I could listen to these readings all the time love them
"Their echoes in my my mind repeats,
And there old meeters keep the beat."
I have just discovered your channel and your work, good Sir. And I have fallen in love with your choice of words and poetry! Thank you very much for your uploads and kind presence on, what is sometimes exceedingly full - the internet stage.
Absolutely wonderful! I picked up a copy of the book this week and adore what you had to say in it! It’s too easy to miss the joy in ordinary pleasures, and God’s presence on that joy. Thank you for helping restore some of that beauty!
I would love to get a print of that linocut impression of you, just marvelous! Stumbled upon your videos recently and I have loved the sincere and serene landscapes you have been able to portray through your literary commentary as well as your joy of pipe smoking. Cheers!
The splendid performance of a Peterson pipe! I have had many other brands over the years and now only have Peterson’s; my favorite is the system spigot or deluxe. Wonderful essay! God Bless.
"The thinking man smokes a Peterson"! The Systems are the best smoking pipes ever made.
That's a beautiful print. Very glad the artist created for you friend.
I'm enjoying a pipe and pint right now in my backyard. How thankful I am. A shring of sorts.
Cheers
Sat watching this with my Bentley Formers Pipe made in Denmark (Estate Pipe) and some Peter Stokkebye Kentucky Maroon Nougat burning nicely in the bowl. Delicious blend.
I absolutely love the line about the fire from your pipe as the Burning Bush was to Moses and to remind us that we stand on Holy Ground. Thank you for sharing this essay.
Thank you for your videos about George MacDonald, CS Lewis, and pipe smoking. I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and we sometimes jokingly call CS Lewis the 13th apostle, the man was incredible. I smoke a pipe myself (hand crafted by my friend)
Thank you for the beautiful video! Could you maybe make another video about your pipe collection? And in the course of this, also tell us something about the individual pipes, for example, how you got or acquired them.
That would be great!
I'm inspired to go smoke my pipe and read some poetry! I am loving your channel Sir!!! Keep the videos coming!!! Cheers!!!
I had the great fortune of sitting down with my trusty Peterson and lighting a fresh bowl of “Lucky Star”, my favorite local blend, just in time. Tremendous essay. Thanks for sharing the words and a bowl!
This is incredible. The reading and material are amazing. I love the passion of the work but the writing is incredible. Thank you sharing your passion, it's an honor to be a part of your adventures.
You are so welcome!
I’ve been smoking a pipe for about 3 years now. Just started looking into it on UA-cam and found this channel. The 1st passage was incredible and so so accurate. Beautiful.
I'm 56. I don't smoke my pipes nearly as often as I should. There is a calming and relaxing affect of the process and ritual. Yes, I think I need to light up a pipe more often than I do.
Excellent writings in the book ,,, Loved it, the pipe is truly amazing...
I am so blessed to have stumbled across this wonderful warmth and silence running through the cold noise of that which we call social. Heart warming. Thank you.
Glory to thee Lord Malcome! What bliss to hear thee unfold thy spirit with an uplifting puff and a swig of liquid treat, embracing a most beautiful past time! I praise your acts of wisdom, you are an embassador of poetry, of the briar and of true culture....
Excuse my spelling , am on the train and difficult to write without my glasses 😅
A great sit down there with you Malcolm, your poems about smoking are glorious! I had my Dr. Watson pipe fired up as I listened to you read your mighty poems today 🤘🏻
As a young man in his twenties, I appreciate your reminder to slow down sometimes and let the noise of life fade away. It's easy to forget to enjoy the journey of life. I hope you will put out more poems and content, as I would love to read and listen more to you. The stillness, peace of mind and presence of God you exude is soothing to those of us watching and listening.
These videos are the equivalent of your favorite comfort food after a long day
What a linguistic masterpiece those poems are, Malcolm you are a true master of your art. I could honestly listen to them every day, please never stop making videos!
listening to your videos, with lofi LOTR playing in another tab on low, sipping bourbon at 1:45am. 🌙
This video popped up just as I finished a morning of writing poetry while smoking my pipe with a cup of coffee next to me.
Malcolm I've stumbled across you and am ever so thankful that I have. This Saturday just gone I bought my very first pipe, a corn cob. I am yet to smoke it as I am waiting for that special moment. Wonderful video. I shall be watching more!
Welcome aboard!
I enjoyed this visit with you. I had a Peterson bulldog with the old Codger blend Sir Walter Raleigh regular whilst watching. May our Lord and Savior truly bless you Malcom.
As He has blessed us with you, David! - seraphim
@@shirtsleeves860 , Thank you and much love ❤️ and God’s blessings to you my friend.
A wonderful video Malcolm, as settling and enjoyable as a pipe itself. I shall select my Peterson Sherlock Holmes series pipe later this afternoon and smoke a bowl in quiet reflection as your lovely poem suggests.
I feel the fire that makes the light that makes the day.
Your reading is almost hypnotic seeing you sit that that chair enjoying your pipe reminds me of my father he always had an ember in his pipe makes me want to own a pipe of my own such a nice video
Thanks
I enjoyed a bowl and a glass of wine while listening to your beautiful words. Thank you.
“A recovery of simple Being, in the desert wastes of doing.” - now that is a line!
Good old Iwan Ries three star. My first pipe tobacco ever was blue. I'm fond of green myself. Cheers.
What a brilliant man i could listen for hours
What a wonderful essay and what a pleasure to watch you in your 'den', so happy being surrounded by what you love!
Cheers!
This man is a class act in being the best you can be. I imagine wonderful things as he reads to me. Thank you. Just subscribed
Every time I pop in to your channel, has been a real treat.
He’s like a wise blackjack who played in the hobbit and never got out of character love the g
I smoke a pipe in the summers sitting by camp fires or reading on the front porch in the rain, in autumn walking in the changing forests and in winter by the fire with the wind and ice howling outside.
the essay and especially the accompanying poem, were quite beautiful. thank you for sharing this with us
You always faithful spread the glories of the poetic masters, but you belong amongst them too. Your own poems are a joy.
My favorite person ever! Cheers to you sir!❤❤❤😮
This videos are so calming.
Refreshing, beautiful, and life sustaining all around. Thank you and God bless you. Great Peterson! Keep the faith
Simply beautiful.
Thank you for sharing of your mind, heart and soul. I appreciate the 20 minutes of watching your teach and entertain.
Thanks!
Many thanks!
Malcolm I have just recently discovered your channel and your channel meets evrything I enjoy. Literature, religion and a calming study atmosphere. I am a 17 year old from Toronto, Canada and I have been introduced to C.S Lewis after I read his work, “Mere Christianity” in religion class.
Guite!!

You should try lighting the pipe with hemp wick. A hemp string dipped in beeswax, sufficient to carry a flame. When you light it with a zippo, you are getting the flavor of the butane as well, particularly when you have to light and puff on it several times over to get it cherry and rolling.

Pipes and poetry. Perfection. Thank you for sharing this!
Wonderfully engaging discussion. Truly a joy to behold.
This was a very good video. I just happened to be enjoying some 1792 in a Lasse Skovgard pipe. It went perfectly with the content of the video.
