That’s fair on Cathedral. I thought at least you might appreciate Lee’s vocals on that since it’s different from how he usually sings. Choosing between that and a couple other albums to be mentioned was painful.
At The Gates - The Red in The Sky Is Ours, I thought at least someone would’ve mentioned this one.
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, this one was criminal for not being mentioned.
Uriah Heep - Very ‘Eavy… Very ‘Umble, mandatory mention for pioneer status.
Type O Negative - Slow, Deep, and Hard,
    Didn’t see anyone mention this.
X JAPAN - Vanishing Vision, This one definitely has to be mentioned, and I doubt many would. Just intense Japanese Power Metal.
That First Manowar Album’s genuinely good.
Welcome to hell is up there as Venom’s Best. I also lean more to At War With Satan and Even Cast In Stone. Jon should definitely check those out.
For Jon, if he ever gets around to Cathedral, the first 3 are good to start. But considering he’s a big Prog guy if I remember right, I think he’d be into The Garden of Unearthly Delights and The Guessing Game. The former is Celtic Frost Heavy with Prog elements, with a 20+ min epic, and the latter is doom metal Frank Zappa and Genesis.
And Nick, since you love that Ahab Record, I recommend the following for Funeral Doom:
Thergothon - Stream From The Heavens, the production may make or break the album since it’s so jarring for its genre compared to other bands, but I love it. It’s also one of the first in its style, and along with the production, it has the unique distinction of being one of the shortest funeral doom albums ever (around 40 min.)
Funeral - Tragedies, You’ll love this if you liked My Dying Bride’s Debut.
Bell Witch - Longing, you don’t have to worry about waiting for an hour of 1 Song for it to get somewhere since it’s not one song long ass song.
Esoteric - Epistemological Despondency, this ones a lengthy listen; a double album. But worth listening to how the band incorporates different sounds and effects, plus killer solos. Plus the death metal breaks in between the long songs on both disc.
Evoken - Embracing the Emptiness, basically the precursor to Ahab in terms of style, with more death doom elements.
Skepticism - Companion, this is the latest album from them, and probably the one I’d recommend that’s more in line with their other albums in this list, but they involve a lot of Organs in their music.

Ulver - Bergtatt (don't know why I didn't think of that straight away!)

The Divinity of Oceans, and The Boats of the Glen Carrig were both great, but I personally don't think they matched what came before.

It was like a life changing spiritual experience. First 30 minutes was old clips of 70s metal bands like sabbath, Zeppelin, deep purple, etc projected on a huge stage screen. And then Down played for the next 2.5 hours. They threw in a cover of when the levee breaks, played a alternate version of jail Phil's vocal was beautiful! One that I think is true for me would be Death Leprosy. I think Death never did a bad album, but Leprosy has that rawness I have come to appreciate. Title track, Pull The Plug, Born Dead. Chuck was so good on ALL the albums, but the decider is how raw Leprosy is. Another lesser known album, THAT RULES, is the debut from Infectious Grooves The Plague that makes your Booty Move. The one-two punch of Punk it Up and Therapy (with Ozzy) is BADASS! I think we could also say that Dio Holy Diver is a great record and great debut for Dio's band. Something more pop driven like The Cars debut album, now that is my favorite of theirs. Morbid Angel goes between Altars and Covenant, but right now, Altars of Madness is my favorite for them.
I would say that MOST bands do better as they continue on. It is quite rare for me to like a band's debut over their later work. Queen had a great first record, and as good as that is, it is not as good as Sheer Heart Attack or A Day At The Races to me. Pink Floyd's early albums do not do it for me. Give me anything from Meddle through Momentary Lapse of Reason. Deep Purple is fucking awesome and yet, give me their later stuff. In Rock, Burn, Perfect Strangers are all better than the debut. My favorite Black Sabbath album is still Vol. 4. I do love The Mob Rules as well. The first two Sabbath albums are quite good, and yet, those songs have been played to death! Iron Maiden's first two albums are really good as well, but today, my favorite is either Powerslave or 7th Son. Bloodbath's Resurrection Through Carnage is balls out amazing and yet, I like Nightmares Made Flesh and The Fathomless Mastery more. My favorite Dying Fetus is their latest, Make Them Beg For Death. I don't like their early stuff, but from 2008 on, I LOVE IT! Opeth has many good albums, but I don't think Orchid was their best by any means. Nile's early albums never have agreed with me. In Their Darkened Shrine is good, but Annihilation of the Wicked is GREAT! And I love the last 20 years of stuff they have done.
This was a good topic and thanks for your thoughts \m/ \m/

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  Місяць тому

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I'm glad you dug it. For me, Leprosy is truly the blueprint for death metal in general. I would say almost every trope of death metal that fans love steams from that album. I don't own any Infectious Grooves honestly. It's a band I've been meaning to jam a bit more but I was kinda turned off by the funk metal-ish turn that Suicidal Tendencies took around Art of War so I kinda skipped it. I would agree that most of the bands we go over seem to hit their stride a bit later in their career after they've got some albums under their belt but it's all subjective too so it really depends on the listener. We're definitely going to be doing more topical stuff in the future for sure though. These have been a lot of fun to do.

After all the deathmetal and incredible bands that have come out, i was nervous about listening to it and was sure it would just sound like Mushroomhead or Papa Roach to me now. Alas, I was shocked at not only how great it sounded, but how many great songs there were. There are pretty much 0 skip tracks. Internal Primates and Nothing to Gain had me laughing they were so cool. I used to have this album memorized but because they packed so much awesome in one album, it made for a great re listen all these years later. Go back to LD 50. It had a cheesy rap or two but otherwise, it holds up pretty damn well.

Necrotic Nick- That is such a tough call with Monstrosity. Hell, I struggle picking a favorite between the first 3 already lol. Yeah, I'm slightly more torn on RATM. Battle of Los Angeles has so many bangers on it as well.

Testament is so hard as their entire discography is solid, but for me personally The Legacy stands still at #3. My favorite from the bay area legends is actually their 2008 release, The Formation of Damnation... something about Chuck's growls, Alex being back in the fold, and my all-time favorite drummer Paul Bostaph just hammering the kit makes a heavy metal masterpiece.
The entire album is solid, so many killer thrash albums came out around that time. I'd say same goes for Exodus, a ton would put Bonded as their best, but for me it's Tempo of the Damned by long-shot

How come no one mentions "Once Was Not" when talking about Cryptopsy? That album is an INSANE MASTERPIECE! One of their best. Highly underrated. I mean, do you HEAR what they are doing in that album!? The brilliant songwriting!? One of the most intense creative conceptual cinematic extreme albums I ever heard! Its literally apocalypse or armageddon put to music! It deserves more love amongst extreme metal fans.

I disagree. It’s my second least favorite Cryptopsy album, only ahead of The Unspoken King. Lord Worm’s vocals are pretty poor, and musically it’s kinda a mess. It definitely pales in comparison to Blasphemy Made Flesh and None So Vile, and I’d take both Mike DiSalvo albums over it as well.
