My Thoughts on The Canon 80D after 1 Month of Testing it Out

- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- I have now been using the Canon 80D for month now. I love this camera for being a crop senor 1.6x crop factor camera. This camera is able to do 7 frames per second. It can shoot 1080p at 60fps. It has great auto focusing while in video mode. If you are looking for a new dslr camera body take a look at this Canon eos 80D.

I just bought a refurb unit, with only 585 shutter activation, and I got it at a steal. so excited.
I recently got the 80D! Its incredible! All of my future videos will be shot with the 80D and its so exciting! I currently have around 700 subs and its a lot of hard work, but must keep going! Thanks for this video it was great!
Just bought the 80D - as a 30 year Photographer I'd like to suggest that this Camera is mid range - certainly not entry level.
It's only deemed a 'starter camera' to obnoxious gear heads who spend more time wanking over their gear and talking shit on forums rather than getting off their fat hairy arses and actually going out to shoot.
buahahahahaha.. so fking true
@Mr. E Dragojlovic One of the best autofocus systems and "just a starter camera"?
It's all about the pictures you produce with it, a bigger and more expensive camera will not always give you the benevits of a good picture ;-)
Mr. E Dragojlovic lol..
I upgraded from the 40D to the 80D. This is a recipe for pure happiness :)
Good stuff, about to upgrade from my 40D as well. Glad I waited a few versions.
I upgraded from never owning a camera a day in my life to a 80d
I just did today. Just a few days later than you guys.
I currently own the 70D, but I am seriously looking into the 80D for the additional video, and for the additional focus points. I am starting to do more video when I travel. So it sounds like the upgrade is worth it.
I think it is
80D has very little additional video. Firstly the best video is ALL-I compression, but 80D is marginally better. If you shoot PBI video then you have some 80D advantages. 70D with ML means raw video, which blows away any 80 DR sensor advantage in H264. The 70D with ML has 14 bit raw 720p 24fps continuous, or 10bit raw 24fps 1850 @ 2:39 near continuous. Focus Peaks, Zebras, and PIP magic zoom all make 70D + ML more useful for video.
Completely ruined that by calling this entry level. "It's entry level to me". Big woop, do you want a pat on the back? It's marketed as, and is, an enthusiast camera. £1000 on a camera is nowhere near entry level.
No use for touchscreen??? Touch screen plus dual pixel autofocus - absolutely brilliant for video focus pulls.
I still have the 10D and the photos are fantastic
Come on man. Comparing to A7S (not a DSLR btw) and calling it entry level? This isn't an entry level camera. It's mid-range. And about a third of the cost of an A7II
i hope he could do better comparison in the future video.
Paired with the 24-105/50mm 1.4 - I can take some DAAAAAAMMNN good photos.
Hey , is that good for studio fashion photography
I know this is an older video but I just bought a 80D tonight and I can't wait to start shooting video with it. Great review by the way.
thanks
Wow you called this an entry level camera 😊 This is a high end camera for normal consumer IMHO. Full frame need only pros. 1200$ and entry level ... Canon Ixus or a 1300D is a entry level camera.
For me this is an entry level camera.
+Media Unlocked ok no full frame = entry level :) (for millionaires maybe too)
@media unlocked u mentioned than canon is yet to put 4k in a dslr? 13:07 what about the 1D C from 2013 and the new 1D X mkii?
I think you're pretty much alone with that opinion. A 1300D, 100D or maybe even 750D would be entry level. The two digit Canon series, Nikon D7X00 series or Pentax K3 series are decidedly advanced semi-pro cameras.
entry level?..lol..because u FF user?...APSC & FF was built for specific profession/situations..just because it APSC doesnt mean it entry level..
Currently using the 60D and am thinking of the 80D body with Sigma 18-35 1.8 Art lens as I think it will help with my landscape work as well as portrait and astrophotography. Thanks for the review.
AWESOME REVIEW. Just what I needed. Many thanks. keep them coming. Ive subscribed. Im waiting for the 6d2 but will also get this 80D as the body is cheaper now and who knows when the 6d2 will come out. probably just after i get the 80d
Hi David, I just stumbled upon this review after watching it some months back and buying the 80D at that time. Great overall review and helped me decide to buy the camera. I just wanted to mention one thing. You said you managed 25 shots in a burst before the buffer fills and then there is a long delay before the camera is usable again. Well this only happens if your SD card is not fast enough. I just replicated this 2 minutes ago to make sure I got my facts right... this is the results I get:
With a Sandisk Ultra Class 10 80MB/s card I only get 21 shots in a burst and indeed have the long wait for the buffer to empty before I can view my images or shoot again. It does let me change exposure settings though for when it is next ready to shoot.
However, and this is the big one... With a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s card I get 27/28 shots in the initial 7fps burst but then the camera continues to fire at a constant rate of 4fps and NEVER stops. Well, I say never, it had not stopped when I got bored and let go of the shutter button after 186 shots. Not only did the buffer never fill to stopping point, but because shooting slowed to 4fps, as soon as you stop shooting the camera is immediately responsive and you can start looking at your images or firing again! I did this test shooting in RAW only. I have tested JPEGs in the past and I still got the initial 27/28 shot 7fps burst followed by 4-5 fps indefinitely after that... so no real advantage over RAW when using the faster SD card. You get about an extra fps after the initial burst, but lose control in post-processing.
The moral of the story is to buy a faster SD card. I only had those 2 cards available, I am curious what would happen with a 120MB/s card?
Thanks so much for the input, but one important thing....
The thing that irritates me
Are people who say "as a PROFESSIONAL photographer I don't need this...I like to get behind the camera...blah blah."
You know what...not everyone might be able-bodied like you or have all your faculties. Some people need touch screens...some people need swivelling fully articulating screens because hey physically can't do certain things. Like stop with that.
I understand you're giving your opinion but don't write something off just because you don't need it or care about it. And also 'professionalism' is vastly overrated. It's about using tools to get amazing images
i have a 6D and an 80D. i use the 6D, with TS-E lenses for landscape. photography. But for my TS-E lenses, the 80D would be a better landscape camera. A few more pixels, a tilty screen, touchscreen, better resolving power, electronic level in the optical viewfinder. Tony Northrup discussed his reasoning in a recent video.
To all the pro guys in the comment section.. I'm a newbie hobbiest photographer.. Should i get the 80d?
Or the sony a6500?
a6500 I am a huge sony fan though
@@daviddisponett9286 thanks!
but it seems like a6400 has beaten a6500..
I think before say something about megapixels, you really need to explain it. Megapixels really do not matter until you decide on the size of what you want to print. When you say blow up it up a little bit you need to explain when pixelation happens.
on google the 80D, 70D would be considered mid range? same with nikon d5500 and pentax k-s2? im kinda confused cause i was reading the comments and you said its an entry level .. i figured if it had a top LCD it wouldn't necessarily be an entry level camera or if it doesnt have multiple scene modes but it has M, A, TV, P
Definitely not entry level. It is mostly bought by photography enthusiasts and it is marketed that way too. I would suspect some professionals even use it as a second body (and a few as their main), especially if they do some video.
Joey Hoogendoorn thanks!
Exactly - we even have a local pro studio photographer using a 700D, not a typo - 700D, not 70D (which is my camera) to do our family photos. As you know a 700D is marketed as an entry level, not professional target market. But the photos still comes out great. It's the photographer who takes great pictures, not the camera.
Thanks for that. You've helped me make up my indecisive mind.
Happy to help
The user is what makes a camera a pro, not the $$$ spent.
Not at all!
5d mark iii and 7D mark ii was the first two to shoot full 1080p in 60 fps
A seemingly biased review..... Of course the full frame is great and it does fulfill certain job requirements that are still behind the times (full frame snobs) but it shouldn't be compared to the 80d. The 80D is a VIDEO POWERHOUSE with better dynamic range, equal or better low-light performance, market leading AF, better monitoring both visual and audio, higher resolution, LESS EXPENSIVE. Oh, and I believe it to produce just as sharp images in photo mode, plus higher burst rate. Anyways, I do believe the full frame cameras to lead the market for photography and love the images they provide but It seems like the wall needs to become less apparent when comparing the two. Just compare them for what is seen on the screen, not whats inside. BUT WHAT ABOUT 4K tho?
Great review. I will buy one the next time I am in the US.
The touch screen focus feature in live view mode is directed toward the Videographer as opposed to the Photographer.
It can be used for either and is equally effective at both.
Good write up, maybe I heard you wrong, you indicated that the Canon 60D is a full frame camera ,I think you meant the Canon 6D
He's a moron, what do you expect, he repeatedly calls the 80D a 'beginner' camera, when it's not. I'd hate to hear what he calls the likes of the 200D
You explained everything very good
Thanks
I am watching your video and I am liking it, but I would like to add a comment. I bought the 80D while I was in Viet Nam and I received in the mail when I was home. I have had the T3i, which I think is still a good camera, I left it with a friend in Viet Nam and he loves it and takes great photos with it. I also had a T5i which is also a great camera!! I traded my T5i for my other friend's international T3i (600D) (my friend ended up also buying a 70D in Ha Noi) because I was buying the 80D. I LOVE my 80D!! I could have bought the 7DMII or some other nicer camera, the 5DMIV is a little out of my price range, BUT the 80D is brand new technology. From what I read the video is better than any of the older nicer (more expensive) models.
The comments, I have read articles of some professionals that are still using the T2i for their shoots, My friend in Viet Nam takes very good photos with his T3i, I will be taking a T5i to him and pass the T3i to another friend and take another T5i for another friend. My friend really loves his 70D, I really love my 80D. I feel no shame when I take it out of my bag.
You mentioned about the motor noise of the auto focus. When you use the internal mike you still hear little clicks. If you use an external mike you don't hear them. Thank YOU for your video, it is very good. I really enjoy watching videos about the 80D. :) I hope you have a great 2017!!!
best review!! thumbs up buddy! waiting ur 6D mark ii review again.
thanks
Sure we have the new full frame cameras these days, but the 80D is a great camera for upgrading from ENTRY LEVEL REBEL CAMERAS(canon). 👀
costco has it in a bundle with two lenses, two batts, bag and 32gb sd for $1299
But the 24-105L is a full frame kit lens and also USM is a step above STM.
We are thinking about getting a 80d for video to shoot our channel. Thanks for the follow up 🤓😊🙂😎
You've got to get STM lenses for this camera to judge the video focusing.
Solid review, thanks. This is a big purchase... I'm still using my 20D and the LCD screen finally died. Really gives me pause to spend the 1500+ on a kit knowing that the next iteration will likely have 4k though :/
Thanks
Just found your video and I'm also from Kentucky!
For me, this is a great video camera.
the 1DX mark II and the 5D Mark VI's 4K is still in MJPEG. I doubt they're going to add 4D to a $1200 camera.
Jimmy Ngai GoPro has it... no reason these can't
I'm thinking of this for B-roll to my C100.
Got it, love it.
the 70D had the same dual pixel tech, the 80D just got a better algorithm to track focus
I don't know, why you all wish 4k movies?! Are you making cinema movies? Majority of normal people even don't have HD TV's. So why the camera in that prize range should even have 4k video - I don't see the point. You need i7+ computer with a lot of GB RAM, some TB disks to manage all the data, time needed for processing, ... Nonsense for non cinematic users.
DR - that is another point: Canon should do better job in comparison to other brands, that are much better. CANON, do you hear us???
But I see, EOS 80D is good camera for advances amateur photographers.
yiu can use 4k for a whole lot more
I agree that everyone is obsessed with 4K and 1080p is often good enough but, having said that, 4K video viewed on a 1080P device looks better than 1080P viewed on a 1080P device. It defies logic but it does!
Back in those days I used to have a DV cam and never thought about 720p or 1080p as no one had that kind of equipment to watch blah blah. Now retrospectively i wish those DV videos were 1080p and now the same debate about 4K !!
Plus with 4K, you can crop more.
Because 4K downsampled to 1080p is noticeably sharper than 1080p, and 4K recording allows for reframing in post, including pans/tilts/zooms as smooth as you could possibly want.
Which camera should buy Canon 80d or Nikon d7200 ?
Potraits , Lanscapes , low light group pictures
I really want the 80D.. I'm upgrading from a Nikon d3300..
Very good video. Be blessed
Thanks
If I could find a used 6D MKII I'd get one just for DPAF and flip screen on a FF.
Is the 80D worth the extra money from the 70D? When you're working with speed ramping, slow motion etc. deos the 30- 60 fps make the difference?
Search 'Crop Sensors vs Full Frame :: Crop Or Crap?' in youtube. I keep going back to that video.
Since "crop" is pretty much the filmmaking standard, and the 80D is largely targeted to the video market, it shouldn't even be an issue at all for the camera. But it is...
i have a canon 70-300 f/4 5.6 is usm mkii how would you compare this to the canon 70-200 f/4 l is usm for wild life
80D is better for video and good on pictures the 6D is mainly for photography
I am now using the Sony A7R III and it is great for both.
Regardless of what you have heard, the public is not really interested in 4K like they were in HD. People are not interested in changing their TV sets again, considering they just bought them few years go. They had non-HD TVs for decades before they switched to HD or Full HD. 4K is a flop. Don't listen to a vocal minority who likes 4K. A lot of them don't even have it at home.
disagree completely
had 1080 Full HD large screen TV and a year ago upgrade to 65" 4k the difference was immediately noticeable
and impressive
4K tv`s are quite cheap now, and the difference is very noticeable. Not to mention on a camera, you can film in 4k and downscale to 1080p and get very very clean footage, 4k in cameras is a must in 2018
Would you think it's worth to upgrade from canon t6i to 80D ?
Would it be an upgrade to go from the first 7D to an 80D?
this video was FANTASTIC 😜
thanks
Iso is lower than 77d isn't it a problem
Im deciding for wildlife photography should i used canon 80D for that 😀??
It will not be a bad camera I am a fan of full frame camera like a 6d
Imo, its better than the 7dmkii in many ways. The AF is much improved (same processor with tweaks) awesome focus in low light and low light capabilities. However, its obvious got a slower frame rate and although the sensor is 24mp, I prefer the colours and range on the 20mp of the 7dmkii. For wildlife, the 80D is a brilliant camera for the price. Its what the 70d should have been.
nice review. can you please do a comparison between Canon 80D and newly launched Canon 6D Mark II. Thanx
Will do so soon.
7dii also does 1080/60 and that was out years before the 80d. so the 80d was not the first with 1080/60 just sayin.
I've been seriously thinking about upgrading to this body but every review I watch starts to mainly focus on how it does video. I really dont care at all about recording video with my dslr, all i care about is how well it takes pictures. So would you recommend this body for someone that does mostly portrait and studio work?
Warmtoast07 I just got it and it's just as good for stills
Nice review. a few thoughts. I have seen many enthusiasts as well as professionals keep a full frame as well as an aps-c camera for different applications. While purists would buy still buy a lack luster full frame camera instead of a feature rich aps-c like the 80D, i think its all about application.
I also wonder if this is "entry" level as you mention. I think not.
You also need to change the image / link of the SDXC card to "SDXC" (Shows SDHC class 10 as soon you say "SDXC" ) :)
Nice review. What lens is on the camera in this video? Sorry if I missed it. Thanks
Canon 70-200mm f2.8
I have this camera and love it. Only issue so far is that using manual mode indoors is the metering. Let me try to explain. With no flash, and assuming any combination of f stop and ISO that gives me a picture on the screen that I see with my own eyes, I always have to the shutter speed about -1 to -1.5. In other words, if I set the ISO and the f stop first, then the shutter speed always overexposes the shot relative to what I see if I set the shutter at "0" on the light meter. No matter what combinations of ISO and f stop I use, I always need to set the shutter speed such that the light meter is negative to get on the screen what I'm seeing in real life. So could this be the screen is inaccurate or is the light meter inaccurate?
Dumb questions maybe but have you set expo. simulation (photo options tab 5) to on? Is your metering set to evaluative (button on the top right next to iso button)? What lens are you using?
My bad, I thought you were saying my questions were dumb. My apologies. I'll check.
dafaq
how about P-Mpix? when using pro lenses like 16-35 2.8ii 24-70 2.8 ii and 70-200 2.8 ii?
Great video I appreciate it.
Thanks
Would you consider 7d mark ii against 80 d ? Planning to buy soon , just gonna ask about your thoughts about this.
I would get the 80d better features.
Lol no.
I was just wondering since this is a year old video but, is the Canon 80D the newest camera since video upload? Did they make the newer camera? Every so often do they come out with new models?
Lovely to buy canon 80d nxtmonth tnx bro
Unusable beyond 2000 ISO? Really? Looks pretty damn good up to 6400 to me. I don't know what perfectly lit world you come from
IMO.... in well-lit environments, the ISO can be cranked up. In lower-light situations, at least for a 70D (digic 5+ processor)... not so much. You will see noise in the shadows....
- But maybe the 80D with the digic 6 processor is worlds better(?) I am interested in trading my 70D in for the 80D - to find out.
There is NO time-lapse mode on the 70D.
John Vigilant but you can get Magic Lantern , which allows you to use it on the 70d
Entry level is a Snappy. Woooo, don't know about dat!
Just one observation. The A7II is not a DSLR, is a mirrorless camera.
Thanks for the info.
Hi
i'm on a tight budget and cannot afford the full frame canon models, i already have 3 different Efs lenses from my rebel T4i and i think its time for an upgrade, would you recommend this camera to someone who shoots mainly landscapes? will i notice a huge difference in terms of image quality if i upgrade to this model?
I would look at the new canon 6d mark ii
Good review man. Only thing I would disagree with is that Canons dual pixel af during video is way way superior to the a7s II af from my experience and I think most others.
Is the A7 a DSLR? I thought it's a mirrorless ... Digital Single Lens Reflex must have a mirror inside
Yeah it's mirrorless
+Suck My Mod so why the reviewer comparing it with the 80D :)
Because DSLR and DSLM (mirrorless) are built for the same purposes - photography, using the same sensor sizes etc. They are all cameras and all comparable.
Wait stumble upon this video because out of curiosity I wanted to see 80D vs my Nikon d5500, anyways you are in my turf (Kentucky) and Keeneland always fun ☺️
Do you a video on d5500?
I take my pictures and instantly upload my pictures to my iPad then to IG and FB, the app Nikon app WMU has been great, only thing I did wish I could upload the videos the same way
Grt video. Plz compare 80d with Sony a 6500. I need to get one of these thus new year Eve so plz post a video talking about still, video and other features.
There is 4gb limits in 80D ! which is bad and you should mention it .
stopped the video at ".. I just on't see the use for that.." come on.. ever needed to shoot action photos where you need to see what comes in from the right side.. try to get that one shot right without the screen/live view.. I do that all the time.. and damn.. the live view touch screen is a must.. makes 5 out of 10 shots good.. in stead of 1 out of 10.. in my experience.
Please give some idea about TRACKING setting,I am little confused about that setting.
Hi, David I need a help in my canon 80d, my problem in my canon 80d is that I m not able to focus in viewfinder but when switch to live view mode its perfectly fine. Pliz share what's is the problem. Need help plizzzzz....
diopter probably. Try adjusting it.
What is the maximum ISO you use for night time photography?
3200 with this camera for stars photogrpahy
Sounds like "Canon ADD"
Michael Farrell
Just call is Eight Zero Delta lol
Totally
Does it have small built in speaker or just headphones?
Hi I am from brasil I am only do picture what do recomend for me 80d or 6d
Hello! I want to know if there is any problem with the 80D mainboard like in the firsts canon 70D. I am an owner of a Canon 70D (for two years and a half) and it was the best camera but recently out of nowhere it shot down and the technical people said that it was a common problemn of that model, a problem with the mainboard. It could be really helpful for me if you now something about that, if the 80D has problemns with the mainboard also. Thank you! I look forward your response.
Thanks for the review. What's the background music you're using?
Holy cow your a younger version of the actor Chris Elliot!!!!! LOL Love your review. I just bought this camera and I love it!! Will you do a review specifically on video portion of it? There is so much to learn about this camera.
ok thanks
7d mk2 has also 1080p 60fps
60fps
if you switch to ntsc
+Mar Van de Sande yes. But when you switch an European Sony camera to NTSC it will always display an annoying note that the camera is in NTSC mode on every startup :P
You mentioned the ISO noise is worse on the t6i than the 80d. Well I believe they are actually the exact same sensor with the same digic 6 processor..
Pete Larson Yeah but Dxomark shows the sensor perfomance on the 80d is considerably better. However, I have an eos rebel t2i and I'm happy with it. Basically because the upper cameras are too expensive XD
The 80d is quite a lot better than the 600d (don't know about the 750d). F.e. ISO 1600 with the 600d is really not nice. It is doable with the 80d though.
A great review!
thanks
How can you compare this to Lumix FZ2000? thanks
As an owner of this camera and a photography student, I think this is the best camera in class as amid range camera. The only problem is the APS-C sensor which is a pain.
which sdxc or sdhc can you advice me for my canon80d? which performs the best?
cause i've a lexar 1000x 128gb SDXC II U3 150mb/s transfer and 80mb/s write, it works very well, but i'd say that sometimes (1/5 times), while i'm recording a simple video in 1920x1080 fhd 25fps it stops.
canon 6d or 80d? i need a second body i shoot with a mark 3
6D all day long its a full frame camera. I would wait a few months the 6D MarkII should come out making the 6D cheaper
Can't wait for the new 6D Mark ii to hit the market. I have a 6D and I love it for its IQ.
I love my 6D
Media Unlocked Yeop, but the improvements on the new 6D are going to be much welcome. Specially in the focus points as well as the photos per seconds. And hopefully a couple stops of Dynamic Range.
for those asking about why people care about 4k, downscaled to 1080p it looks way better than normal hd
Which camera are you using to shoot your video?
Dana Scott
Hello.
Which speed-lite (Flash) would you recommend for the Canon 80D please?
You are obviously a canon man, I own this camera and Nikon D810, I know its apples and oranges, but I would say this is a pretty decent camera compared to the Nikon D7200 Only because the canon has a leg up on video recording, as far as photo, Not a Good low light performer, The automatic white balance isn't very good, and it doesn't have a terribly broad set of features. but the 80D's is pretty bad. In real daylight it's better, but still has problems -- among other things, it turns blue flowers purple. Next review demonstrate this camera with the kit lense, so you can show the folks a real review.
what lens is that ?
Which lens are you using
Canon 24-105mm f4 I beleive
