Ok so I’m really late to the party on this video but I thought I’d share my experience. I used an a6300 for about a year and never really felt connected to the camera. It did have some pretty good sharpness but I would always find that my images felt unnatural and always had artifacts showing up everywhere. This week I picked up an 80D after really missing being in that canon ecosystem and man, I can’t describe how well the 80D produces imagery and video. Even now in 2018. It feels so natural and composes itself so well in any situation. I feel like Sony tries so hard to get the technical aspect of their cameras right that they forget how important it is to create properly composed images. Lots of people say that canon is behind in the camera race but I think they are just taking time trying to perfect new hardware. Sure you can get a camera that shoots 4K but most of the time in my experience the footage is never really that good. Moire everywhere, aliasing, strange artifacts, and so much more, not to mention that in the budget 4K camera market there are always corners that are cut to give that camera the ability to shoot 4K. So it’s sort of a win lose situation.
I just purchased the 80D. The video is icing on the cake. I was sold on photography aspects like the upgrade focusing system, touch screen, swivel screen, mirrorless camera and 24 mega pixel. I said,"What! It has video too?
Had not seen this video... Yes its been a while but its always pleasure to watch your gear videos. I totally appreciate the level of details you cover. Even though you have gear or use gear from one manufacturer (Canon) the most, I find that your findings are seriously very unbiased which is good for your viewers. Thanks for taking time to make these videos!
here is the info about the sensor of 7DmarkII, your info is wrong around 2:00 20.2 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and ISO 100-16000 The EOS 7D Mark II has a newly designed 20.2 Megapixel sensor that delivers high-resolution image files with stunning detail and impressive clarity. Optimized for low-light shooting, the EOS 7D Mark II's sensor captures images at up to ISO 16000 (expandable to H1: 25600, H2: 51200) with remarkably low noise, thanks to its improved, higher sensitivity design. Phenomenal for stills, the EOS 7D Mark II's sensor is equally up to the task for movies, delivering Full HD capture even at rates of up to 60p.
Hey Dustin! Loved the review. Very honest and detailed. As I write, I'm wating for my new 80D to be delivered. I'm happy to see I made the right choice, as I listen to your review....Cheers from Portugal!
I used this Camera to shoot an event recently and found it very user friendly, while it's not a full from camera it is indeed an excellent camera. The one thing that I noticed immediately was the battery life, I shot 13+ hours on one battery. I also loved the built in wifi and the headphone jack were very welcomed extras. Another very welcome feature was the poseable touch screen. I am shooting from a wheelchair while recovery from an injury and the moveable touchscreen made my work a lot easier. I chose this camera because it offered me so much more than, some of the other and it had several features such as the headphone jack, touchscreen and wifi that even the full frames couldn't offer. All in All I really liked it, despite the slower shutter speeds and iso.
Good feedback, Johnny. The 80D really offers a lot of "bang for the buck", and I would love the Canon 6D MKII when it comes to be a very similar camera with a FF sensor.
I guess you have used it thoroughly by now. How is the upgrade compared to 700D (I own it along with sigma 17-50 2.8 and 150-600 C). How much is the improvement comparatively in terms of High ISO and Focus tracking.
What is a reasonable SD card that can do the full 25 RAW buffer? I have the Sandisk Extreme 32GB and only get around 19-20 before it starts slowing down.
It's the 32 GB UHS-I and U3, 90MB/s. However, the read speed is only 40MB/s. I was able to get 7-8 RAW frames with the T6s (normal RAW buffer is 6 frames) after which it slowed to around 2fps, but I guess it's still not enough for the 80D. Edit, I just did some further testing: 23 at ISO 100 21 at ISO 1600
You’re getting pretty close. Getting a card with a better WRITE speed is the most important (that’s where the slowdown is), With a faster card you’ll probably squeeze a few more frames in the buffer. My experience is that Canon lenses exceed the buffer rating (like you found with the T6s)
Sir. Some review tells 80d focussing is not accurate through view finder and through live view is accurate. Awaiting your reply. My purpose mainly portrait and landscape photography
Live View is more accurate on basically every camera, though the difference should not be much. My 80D focuses just fine both ways if I have calibrated lenses to the body.
Wow, the more of your reviews I see the more impressed I am. I have no desire to buy an 80D but I wanted to see what they were about and you deliver that so well. Thanks, I found another photog to subscribe and follow on YT.
That's a more complicated question than this space will allow for. Just search for "clean HDMI out" and know that if it were a big deal to your workflow, you would know what it is. It's a big deal to people who want to color grade and do true cinematic or broadcast work.
I shoot wildlife and landscape (mostly), been using the 80D for a while now, I upgraded to the Canon R6mk2 over a year ago but I keep that trusted 80D as my back-up, it does not disappoint, a great work horse indeed.
Amazing Review! As a 70D owner i was wondering the real world differences between the two, esp with Tracking subjects in servo mode. You answered that perfectly.
Dustin Abbott Thanks for the response. Do you think its worth the different in image quality (and difference in higher ISO performance) compared to a 700D? Really considering the upgrade soon
80D vs a 5D Mk. III for general photography (events, nature, family, travel) + light youtube quality film work with minimal post processing? That articulating touch screen seems very useful.
Hi I just bought 70d ,7 days ago with 18 to 135mm stm leans but now when I just watched you review I thinking to go back to store and to replace fo aditional i uk £80 and get 80d with 18 to 55mm leans can you help with this a choice .I'm not sure is it good idea.
Thanks Dustin for this review. I bought this in the month of May, haven't shot much due to the monsoon setting in within a month. I shall be glad if you can throw some light regarding the max ISO we can set, though you mentioned here quite clearly, that, till 6400 it's cool.
You can use whatever ISO value you are comfortable with. I find that changes for me depending on what I'm doing. In shooting events, for example, I have a higher tolerance for a bit of noise.
Sure, although you may want to go with the 50mm f/1.8 STM to give you a good video lens that will focus quietly. I use that combo for a lot of review footage just because it works well (and I have 15 lenses in my kit all worth more than it!!)
On my 80d I've used the tamron 24-70mm f2.8 vc, tamron 17-50mm f2.8 vc, Tamron 35mm 1.8 vc, canon 10-18mm STM, kit lens 18-135mm STM and the tamron 70-200mm f 2.8 sp di vc usd. They all work really great but I returned the 24-70 because the focal lengths when including the crop factor didn't really sit well with me I didn't need it. I recommend if you're stuck between the 17-50 and 24-70 go to a shop and compare the two. The 17-50 is specifically made for crop so I notice sharper images. The kit lens is very capable as long as you got good light. Excellent for video, both the kit and the canon super wide with the STM focusing. The tamron 35 prime is also good for video and excellent for portraits and artistic effects. I decided to go with the 35mm instead of the nifty fifty (canon 50mm) I tried them both on my camera and since you have to account for crop factor the 50mm was just too zoomed in for my liking, I couldn't even take a decent photo in the store. The 35mm is really nice because accounting for the crop factor (x1. 6) it's about 56mm. A more usable focal length. I also recommended the tamron 70-200mm f 2.8 sp di vc it's an excellent lens and hold ups well against the competition at a fraction of the price!
A very helpful review :) After many many hours of research and youtube videos I have made my final decision for my first DSLR to be the EOS 80D. It is in my price range and is a perfect all rounder camera for someone like me who is just starting out! Thank you for your help!
Dustin can you only take one photo at a time in bulb mode? I'm shooting the stars and I don't see an option to shoot more then one photo at 30 minutes or am I over seeing something
Hi, i had an EOS 70D, then decided to get the EOS 5D Mark III, it sounds maybe strange, when talking about a 5D Mark III, but i just do not feel like im happy or being successful with the 5d, when it comes to sharpness of my pictures, specially to the eyes, like i used to get with the 70D, and just began to miss my 70d, now im just wondering to get the EOS 80D, what would you do suggest me in that case? Thanks
Hey Dustin. I just purchased the Canon 90D i have the 24 pancake, I would like your opinion between the Canon15-85 and Sigma 18-50 I am a retired wedding photographer and will be taking family and vacation and some elementary school sports team and single portraits, no action. So please let me know what you think.
I do really like the Canon 15-85 as a general purpose lens, though it does not have a large maximum aperture. I haven't used all the variations of the Sigma 18-50, so it's hard for me to comment there.
If you have never used full frame before there is a just a difference in the image quality. The bigger sensor allows for smoother color rendition and the handling of light fall-off. Low light performance is better. The 80D has made a lot of strides in all these areas, but the 5D4 is still better. It doesn't show up so much in test charts, but in actual use I'd reach for my full frame bodies for image quality over my APS-C bodies any time.
Hello Dustin...Can you tell me what will be the exact I will get with length of a 100-400 MM IS II + 1.4x Teleconverter on a 80D & with Tamron 150-600mm G2 with 80D?
Great review, just purchased the 80D with the 18-135USM nano and the 70-300 F4/5.6 USM nano, 470 EX AI flash, two 64 GB Sandisk Extreme Pro cards, (fast)
Dustin Abbott Thanks, watching several of your videos helped my purchasing decision. I appreciate your time making these videos to enlighten others who currently have less knowledge and experience.
I do a lot of video recording for battle rap events. I want to try something new where I'm rotating around the artist on a hover broad to get new angles. What camera you think is best for something like that?
+THE MIDWEST CONNECT BATTLE LEAGUE You might consider the new EOS M5, as it will combine camera image stabilization with lens image stabilization to get a surprisingly steady platform for video without any other gear. A great tool for you would also be a handheld gimbal like the Zhiyun Crane that I reviewed.
I'm currently deciding between this 80D or 7Dmkii. My current body is a 60D. I mainly cover indoor events and some product shoots. Which one would you refer? 80D or 7Dmkii? Thanks.
Thanks for all the info. I own the T2i with 18-55 + 55-250 + 100-400 ver. 1. I purchased the 90D and it doesn't work with these lenses. Photos aren't sharp - soft focus - and I'm told to possibly calibrate lens - not familiar with that? Would my current lenses work with 80D?
Hi Linda, a focus calibration is what you need. I've got a playlist on how to do this, or you could send the camera and lenses to Canon and they will do it for you.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you. Is something like that expensive? Also..if it doesn't work, I can't return camera. Do you think my lenses would work with the 80D Dustin?
I think that Canon should do that calibration for free. Your lenses "work" with the 90D. I've almost always calibrated focus on my lenses with all camera bodies, including the 80D. It has nothing to do with a camera or lenses working but rather the reality that the best results typically come after some work with focus calibration.
Worse of course - the 80D is better then all xxD predecessors, but really (and still) can't compete in DR terms with the D7200 - which is one of the best APS-C(DX) sensors ever so far. www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Canon-EOS-80D-versus-Sony-a-6300-versus-Nikon-D7200___1076_1072_1020 EOS 80D vs A6300 vs D7200 D7200 is still the King, albeit the "oldest" from March 2015 here.
D500 is a beast of a camera for many other reasons. The dynamic range would have not been the reason for choosing it since dynamic range is not everything that is important about getting great images. I have a 6D and a 7D Mark ii and neither one is superior in DR to many of the popular cameras. But I tell you this, my images are just as good if not superior. D7200 is good camera as well but to say it is better than the 80D it is hard to say. In my opinion, they are all great system, and it is up to who is behind it that can make the real difference.
I do have the D7000 & 2 FF Systems, and i am happy enough with what i've got. I don't need the latest & greatest. One can make decent pictures with any camera, compositon-wise.
Dustin Abbott Thank you very much, for your appreciation, I also think like you, 6Dff for better portraits, e will decide to buy 80D crops because of new technology, touch screen + sport + birds and spin video better than 6D, thank you very much 😍
Dear Dustin, I was considering changing my Canon EOS 750D (t6i) for the 80D. After watching/ reading many reviews, I believe it's not worth it from the image quality aspect. I'm not very happy with the noise coming from my camera but i believe the difference to the 80D would be minor. Do you believe that there would be any noticeable difference in IQ?
There will be some minor improvement, but not significant. The bigger advantages of the XXD series are from better build, ergonomics, and feature sets.
Thank you for the reply. That's how I see it as well. I believe it will be full frame when the budget allows it. Congratulations for your great work, since I haven't mentioned it in my comment-question.
7d mk2 has 20.2Mpix like the 70d so the video is slightly wrong. So the 80d has higher Mpix than 7d mk2. As a 7D mk2 owner I would love the 4 Mpix extra.
Please give review on canon new t7i (800D) It has same Dual AF , 45 Cross Type , 24MP Sensor , 1080p/60fps Which one you'll recommend for a normal user ?
That depends on what you mean by "normal user". The 80D has a better frame rate and build and has a few other advanced features. If you don't need those things, then the T7i will probably work fine for you.
Great video! Thanks! My local shop has a pre owned, mint, 80D for the same price as a new M50...I can't decide...any help? What would you prefer? Thanks!
That depends. Do you own lenses already? How much do you value small and light? Do you like the controls of a DSLR or a mirrorless better? For newer/amateur photographers who aren't overly technical, I've been mostly recommending mirrorless cameras.
Hi Dustin, thanks for your reply. I don't have any lenses anymore, my Nikon 5600 and both my lenses were stolen during my last holiday... I always had an DSLR, I still have an old Sony a300 (those days...) and i need a new one. I do some vlogging and landscape photography. I really like the autofocus on those Canon's and don't care too much about 4K. I am a bit concerned about taking an M50 outdoors when the weather is bad or when it's dusty. I do like the fact that it is more compact though...it's a tough call :)
Good review! Would you please do a comparison video amongst 80D, D500, X-Pro2 and A6300? I personally don't think performance of 80D's sensor could keep up with the others.
+Dustin Abbott I know a lot of hard work would be required to prepare such a comparison. It would be great if you could compare 80D with any one of the three.
Hai sir.. What's your suggestion for getting more color depth in canon 80D photography.. Please help me, I am always facing low color depth, with my 80 D..
That's a very open-ended question. Unless there is something wrong with your camera, I would say that it comes down to either your lenses or your shooting style, as the 80D has Canon's best current APS-C sensor, and it produces very good color depth.
I usually choose Fine Detail in Canon cameras where available, but you can edit any profile to your preference to increase color saturation, sharpness, etc...to your taste
which sdxc or sdhc can you advice me for my canon80d? which performs the best? cause i've a lexar 1000x 128gb SDXC II U3 150mb/s transfer and 80mb/s write, it works very well, but i'd say that sometimes (1/5 times), while i'm recording a simple video in 1920x1080 fhd 25fps it stops.
So given the fact that j have the budget what would you recommend 80d or Sony a6500(if I want I could go for the 7sii or 7rii). But I am concerned about the lense selection for Sony's cameras.... need camera for UA-cam videos I'll be doing some tutorials on computer science.
I have had my 80D since late March. This body handles so much nicer than my current 5DII FF body, I overall prefer using it. The swivel screen was a big addition for me (and I do not do video) that I have wanted for a long time (please canon, put this in at least a new 6DII, PLEASE?). IQ wise-I prefer it for high ISO use-yes-the 5DII has finer "noise", but has horrible purple blooming and crosshatching in the shadows at ISO 6400+ that the 80D lacks. At base ISO 100, not much to differentiate them, other than the 5DII file being more enlargeable. I don't want to upgrade the 5DII until the next iteration of the 5DSr, because the 5DSr will eventually get the sensor DR range improvements the 80D has, so probably at least two more years to wait for that upgrade. Thank you very much for this review-just re-iterates what has made this body so great for me!
Hey, great video! Would you recommend this camera over the d7200? I mainly take blog type photos and occasionally like to film. Any help would be much appreciated.
I have to admit that I'm not very familiar with the d7200. I don't shoot Nikons. I do think the 80D is a great choice for what you are describing, but the D7200 may be similarly good.
brother i have a question regarding 80D is it worth for wild life. i already owned 80D and its really outstanding over all performance. A a macro photographer I'm really like its performance. I have plan to buy 100-400mm IS USM II for my 80D. Appreciate your suggestions & awaiting for your replay.
appreciate your kindness and quick response. if you don't mind can share some sample images those you shoot with canon 80D+ 100-400 Usm II. god bless you always
appreciate again for your kindness and quick response. i'm really sorry for disturbing most busy days, sure my brother i will check your gallery and find those pics. god bless you
@dustin abbott My canon 80D has some focusing issues. It focuses acurately with center autofocus point but with off-center af points it back-focusing a bit . I have never heard off such strange problem before. Can this kind of problem occurs frequetly ? Should i go to canon sevice center ?
Satsubhra Saha Have you calibrated the focus? To be fair, though, I had some issues getting consistent focus when I shot with the 85 on several different bodies.
@dustin yaa its perfectly focusing with the center af point... nd the rule of calibration is to focus with the center af point... nd its doing fine with that center af point... but at same distance it is back focusing with the off center af points... strange ! isn't it ??
+Dustin Abbott But till now Canon not yet update that. They are still telling Canon 1 series and 5d mk III only can auto focus through center point with 400+1. 4x III extender.
Is anyone else have this problem with the 80d & sigma 18-35? I have noticed that when I use live view with the AF square box and zoom in 5x or 10x, the 80d doesn't focus as sharp and crisp as possible. I have compared it to my canon 5t and even though is slower, it does a better job at focusing in this way. Its not bad for my purposes, and If I have the time, I do everything manually anyways but it is annoying.
Dustin, nice review, question, you mentioned a feature that would help in event type shooting that would leave the images a little more cool looking. Was the the white balance feature that you turn off the warm tones? or was it something else. if not the warm tone feature, where is it in the menu?
Yes, if you go in the menu to AWB (auto white balance), there is no a choice to toggle between tradition AWB and AWB - white priority. The White Priority setting will result in a white balance that will try to recreate white even under tungsten light.
Sir, Nice review pretty helpful and detailed.... I would like to ask if, you have tested the old 18-135 and the new 18-135 lens that comes with the 70d and 80d.... thanks a lot!!!
+Dustin Abbott ohh thanks a lot!!! im gonna check it out now.... anyway... looking forward for more videos from you.... keep it up... Thanks again Sir...
I'd still take a full frame camera with way less features than more features and go crop. At least until they get the ISO down. But I do like the full frame lenses, having the field of view I want, etc. The lenses resolve more detail, I know that is a debated subject but it definitely resolves more detail, it might not be a big deal to some. I thought about the A6300 for 4k but everyone says it's unusable unless it's on a tripod and completely still. The rolling shutter is so bad you can't walk or do small pans. The moire and aliasing seems to be horrible as well. That is something that really bothers me, I don't deal with moire and alias well. Having a 6D now instead of the 5D Mark iii I had to buy the VAF-6D anti alias/moire filter that goes in front of the sensor. I pop it in easily when I'm gonna do video. I prefer it to the one that was in the 5D Mark iii. It doesn't soften the footage anywhere near as much and yet you can't make it alias or moire no matter what you do. The difference is drastic. When I got the 6D coming from the A7R but being used the 5D Mark iii before that, that was the only down side. The focus points, I actually preferred the 6D's -3 cross type, I don't shoot sports or anything. I like the wifi tethering to my iPad Pro, shoot raw but get full jpeg preview. The video looked just as good but the alias and moire was horrible. That filter made it look better than my 5D footage though. Then once you add some sharpness in post it's really not as far behind 4k when it comes to outputting on 1080p on UA-cam. I had a 4k video camera for a while but sold it to get my 24-70 2.8 ii. I do miss it, but the 6D is working fine for now as long as I have that filter.
Yeah, we will all be better with that 5D Mark IV. lol Once I can afford it. The Lord won't let me blow money like I used to. So I have to earn it. If so be it i'll stick with the 6D for years more. I've had God rebuke me before for charging things.
Indeed so... I had the 70D for 2 years...and last week the 80D... my pics went higher the ladder. Thanks for your professionalism... very unlike some biased reviews out there. Many based on paper specs (O_O) ..paper warriors ..LOL
One thing I really hate about 60/70/80/6D is that D-Pad otherwise they are excellent cameras. I have been using 70D since last two years and even today that D-Pad for af selection bugs me. I would really like to see Canon bring back joystick on their 6D mk II atleast whenever it comes out.
+Chaitanya Shukla Agreed. At least the feel of the D-Pad has improved on the 80D, though the joystick remains the better option for AF point selection.
+Dustin Abbott I rented 80D for a day from my local rental service, compared to 70D I found that on 80D the D-pad was taking a lot of wrong inputs. I find the Nikon cameras in same price range to have better placement of D-Pad compared to Canon's. If Canon doesnt want to give joystick(their mentality of protecting high end cameras) then I would really like to see that D-Pad moved up by about a inch or so just so operating it with thumb becomes easier.
Amazing! If you need any kind of info about Florence o Bologna, i'm here and overall if you permit me to make a photo session together around that cities.
Great stuff! I think I'm still leaning to 7d markII because of high ISO performance and 2 card slots. 7d markII IS still a bit better at high ISO, right? o.O Greets from Croatia!
+dbauernf I'm not aware of the high ISO performance being better, but it certainly excels in the burst rate, cards (as you note), and overall build. I suspect the focus system is still the better one, too.
+Dustin Abbott Well damn, yeah, I can't afford a full frame body (other then 6D) and the 7D markII does 90% of the stuff I need better AND is safer with 2 cards AND 2 out of 3 lenses I own at the time are APS-C only. I'll just add the 6D later for nightlife/clubs and I should be set for everything! p.s. Most reviews mention 1/3 to 1/2 stop gain from 70d to 80d, and another 1/3 to 1/2 to 7d markII so.. I'm holding on to that.. but pics I see online look more or less the same (80d vs 7d markII).
As a professional audio engineer, while watching your video I cannot help but continually stare at your lapel mic and the fact that it is facing upside down. LOL.
Great work, an excellent video. I have a Canon 70D that just die on me after 2 years of casual use. Canon ask me for $419 to fix it or I can buy a new camera like the 80D. I'm afraid that after a while the 80D just die on me too. I have been using Canon cameras for many years and I love the Canon 70D but I feel that lately Canon it is dropping the ball went it comes to quality on their new cameras. Any thoughts on that? Thank you!
Nice review! Really like your reviews, little biases and detailed. There are rumors about the canon 6d2 releasing in July, what do you think about it? Would it be comparable to 5d4?
+林雋庭 All I've seen is the spec list, but I would say that there will be advantages to the 6D II (articulating screen being one of them), but other areas where Canon will make sure it doesn't compare (no 4K, poorer metering system, 1/4000th max shutter speed). At the same the 6D II looks to be a more complete camera than the 6D was
Dustin Abbott I have the same feeling about the camera. If the articulating screen and DPAF is real(maybe the image stabilizer?!), I think it would be an awesome product for canon.
Thanks for the review. I own one and I really think it was a great purchase. I did upgrade from a rebel series camera. I like the dynamic range it has to offer.
I might do the same, but I think I'll wait for the 6D mk II announcement before I decide. At one point I thought about getting a (used) 6D and keeping my 70D but I'm not so convinced it's worth it for the IQ and low light performance alone... I'd maybe rather go for the 80D or wait for the 6D mk II.
I would agree with you. I would rather save that money for the new 6D Mark ii. I expect it to be a beast of an entry level full frame. I have the 6D and I totally love the image quality. I have no complaints about unless I am trying to use for applications that is not design for.
Thank for the review.... really need it. I consider to buy the 80D for may indie film making and perhaps, it's okay for me to not got the 4K yet. Canon's image quality from it's sensor it's the greatest that I know for color rendering. And it just arrived at Indonesian store.
+Dustin Abbott He's partially right... It does not like my Tamron 16-300 for video and live... It will freeze in AV or Tv but not in manual mode. View finder pictures are not an issue. My canon and sigma art lenses seem to be ok. So that is a bit of a disappointment, maybe there will be a new firmware...
+Stephen Gatley shilling? Seriously? There are scores of credible reviewers out there, and none of them have mentioned this. And if a camera freezes with a third party lens, it is a compatibility issue with that lens. Tamron will have to release a firmware update for that lens (and they will)
Great review. Sadly this camera flew under the radar this year. I was walking through a best buy a couple months ago and saw one on display. I played around with it and it felt great. I had just purchased a Nikon D810 and didn't need another camera. It sorta stuck in my mind though. I knew I wanted a camera like this and kept watching reviews on it. So anyway I got one today and it's really a fine camera. I'm planning on getting the Canon 70-200 f4 lens. I read from others that combo is killer.
+ValiRossi The Sony a6300 was launching at the same time and got a lot of attention from the blogosphere because of its spec list. It was replaced by the a6500 within 7 months, but the 80D has proven generally excellent despite its lack of 4K video support.
how many focus points does your shirt have? are they all cross type?
I think they are, actually :)
Hahaha......

I’m glad you are happy with the camera. I own an 80D as well

I’m a beginner and this was my first vid of yours. Great delivery and information, straight to the point. Thank you. Subbed.
Thanks for the good feedback.
I just purchased the 80D. The video is icing on the cake. I was sold on photography aspects like the upgrade focusing system, touch screen, swivel screen, mirrorless camera and 24 mega pixel. I said,"What! It has video too?
It has a great feature set.
Mirrorless??
@@kearress7350 The 80D? No.
Top notch video. I like to watch videos that gets to the review and no stupid background music. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. ❤❤❤
My pleasure.
Thanks for the nice feedback.
here is the info about the sensor of 7DmarkII, your info is wrong around 2:00
20.2 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and ISO 100-16000
The EOS 7D Mark II has a newly designed 20.2 Megapixel sensor that delivers high-resolution image files with stunning detail and impressive clarity.
I purchased this camera before seeing this review. This review makes me want to buy another one. Thank you!!
Wow - that's pretty high praise.
Just making sure that my decision of getting the 80D is right. I’m a event shooter, so I think it will be a nice camera to use.
Enjoy the camera. It's a good one.
What you said at the onset, about Canon specs usually looking mediocre but able to deliver when used in real world situations. That is so true.
+Markdean Masanque That's been my findings, for sure. Canons often turn out better than expected while some other brands seem worse than their specs.
I just bought one (pre-owned, saves me 400 bucks), replacing a 700D.
Quite excited.
Nice - enjoy!
I guess you have used it thoroughly by now. How is the upgrade compared to 700D (I own it along with sigma 17-50 2.8 and 150-600 C). How much is the improvement comparatively in terms of High ISO and Focus tracking.
Best channel of its kind on UA-cam, thank you for all this great content Mr. Abbott !
That’s kind. Thank you!
What is a reasonable SD card that can do the full 25 RAW buffer? I have the Sandisk Extreme 32GB and only get around 19-20 before it starts slowing down.
Is your card UHS-I or UHS-II? The Sandisk Extreme UHS-I card with a write speed of 95mps is as good as you'll get for that.
Edit, I just did some further testing:
23 at ISO 100
21 at ISO 1600
You’re getting pretty close. Getting a card with a better WRITE speed is the most important (that’s where the slowdown is), With a faster card you’ll probably squeeze a few more frames in the buffer. My experience is that Canon lenses exceed the buffer rating (like you found with the T6s)
I bought a refurbished 80D last month and I love it.
Good for you!
Have been using the 80D since May 2017 and loved every bit of it. This review just made me happier. BTW I love your presentation style 👍👍
Glad it was helpful!
@@DustinAbbottTWI 😊
+Rubi Doo Thanks for the nice feedback!
11:13 "Neither does it offer a clean HDMI out"? What's wrong with the HDMI out that it has? Not "clean"? What does that mean?
That's a more complicated question than this space will allow for. Just search for "clean HDMI out" and know that if it were a big deal to your workflow, you would know what it is. It's a big deal to people who want to color grade and do true cinematic or broadcast work.
I shoot wildlife and landscape (mostly), been using the 80D for a while now, I upgraded to the Canon R6mk2 over a year ago but I keep that trusted 80D as my back-up, it does not disappoint, a great work horse indeed.
You've gotten some good use out of it!
@@DustinAbbottTWI Definitely.
Superb video, Dustin. Great to hear comments from a pro who has used the camera substantially before summarising. Thank you.
+cooloox Too many reviews are done just based on the specs and not real shooting.
Amazing Review! As a 70D owner i was wondering the real world differences between the two, esp with Tracking subjects in servo mode. You answered that perfectly.
+BHD812 I needed to answer some of those questions for myself, so I'm glad my quest helped you!
Why the microphone is facing downwards?
That's recommended to produce more even audio results. It diminishes "P" and "S" sounds
I owned the 80D from May 2016 to December 2019 where I upgraded to the 90D. Did you ever test the 90D?
I didn't, actually.
Is it worth the upgrade from a 700D ??
Better build, AF system, and extra features. Only you can answer that question, but the 80D is a very, very good camera.
Dustin Abbott Thanks for the response. Do you think its worth the different in image quality (and difference in higher ISO performance) compared to a 700D?
Really considering the upgrade soon
guitarist6494
The image quality will be better, yes, but I think I would buy it more based on all of the other improvements than just the IQ alone.
Dustin Abbott Sure thing, thanks for the help
80D vs a 5D Mk. III for general photography (events, nature, family, travel) + light youtube quality film work with minimal post processing?
That articulating touch screen seems very useful.
If you priority is the kind of video work you describe, I do think the 80D is actually probably the better choice.
Should I wait for the 90D? Right now I have a Rebel T5i, looking to step up my game!
That’s pretty much impossible for me to say, as I don’t yet know how serious an upgrade the 90D will be.
Your's reviews are some of the best in UA-cam. Do you have any plans to give the new 90D your review treatment. Thanks
I would like to, but don't have an immediate plans.
Dustin Abbott ..thanks for the insight
do you think a Sigma 18 - 35mm f/1.8, Canon 50mm f/1.4 and a Sigma 50 - 100mm f/1.8 is a good lens kit set for the 80d?
Glad to help out, Jessica...and always great to get feedback from female viewers as the large majority of my audience (about 95%) is male.
are recommending for better photo quality on this camera 18-135 usm or 25-70f4?
Can somebody solve problem of " no preview available " to raw images. These open in none softwares!!
I am thinking about it, but it is July, 2019 now, should I wait for the 90D?
That's probably not a bad idea, if you don't mind paying the premium for new tech. It looks like Canon will push the series ahead with the 90D
Dustin can you only take one photo at a time in bulb mode? I'm shooting the stars and I don't see an option to shoot more then one photo at 30 minutes or am I over seeing something
Hi Tom, that's correct. Bulb mode is about shooting for lengths of time outside the scope of automatic, and, in camera, that is a one shot option.
should i buy it as my first DSLR ? i am looking for one and i won't be upgrading my camera for 3-4 years !
please help
I think the 80D is a great camera, so sure, go for it!
Thanks
That really shouldn’t be the case. Full frame results are generally more pleasing. The 80D is a very nice upgrade from the 70D, though.
Hi Dustin, I'm considering upgrading from my 80D to a 5D4 for professional work. How much better do you think the image quality of the 5D4 is?
The Canon combination reaches 560mm, which, coupled with the 1.6x crop factor of the 80D, is 896mm of effective reach. The 150-600 gives you 960mm.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you Dustin...!!! :)
Great review, just purchased the 80D with the 18-135USM nano and the 70-300 F4/5.6 USM nano, 470 EX AI flash, two 64 GB Sandisk Extreme Pro cards, (fast)
Sounds like a nice kit.

Thanks, watching several of your videos helped my purchasing decision.
Are you sure about the framerate in burst mode ? I think the older 70D is slightly faster with 7 fps compared to 6 fps by the 80D.
They both shot at 7 FPS. The 6 FPS is for use with Live View during DPAF.
Thank you very much ! For me, you and Christopher Frost are the best lens-reviewers on UA-cam !
I'm currently deciding between this 80D or 7Dmkii. My current body is a 60D. I mainly cover indoor events and some product shoots. Which one would you refer? 80D or 7Dmkii? Thanks.
I prefer the 80D myself. Better sensor, articulating screen, and it sounds like you don't need the super high frame rate from the 7DII
Dustin Abbott thanks.
The first minute brings it right to the point!
great review, again!
Thank you, Moe. Glad to help out.
Hello, thank you for your review. The dynamic range is better than Nikon D500 or D7200?? Other sites say otherwise. Same with ISO noise.
Worse of course - the 80D is better then all xxD predecessors, but really (and still) can't compete in DR terms with the D7200 - which is one of the best APS-C(DX) sensors ever so far.
www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Canon-EOS-80D-versus-Sony-a-6300-versus-Nikon-D7200___1076_1072_1020
EOS 80D vs A6300 vs D7200
D7200 is still the King, albeit the "oldest" from March 2015 here.
Brother asked me, if you buy between 80D and 6D canon is better combo, his needs is portraiture + sports + birds. Thanks very much😘😘😘
Unfortunately the 6D is the better portraiture option, but the 80D is better for sports/birding.
Dustin Abbott Thank you very much, for your appreciation, I also think like you, 6Dff for better portraits, e will decide to buy 80D crops because of new technology, touch screen + sport + birds and spin video better than 6D, thank you very much 😍
A very balanced review in terms of technical and practical aspects. Thank you
Thanks
Another excellent review.
+Mario C. Castillion Thanks, man!
Fantastic review, Dustin. Thanks again for a thorough look at the 80D.
+rrrrrrtt1 My pleasure!
7d mk2 has 20.2Mpix like the 70d so the video is slightly wrong. So the 80d has higher Mpix than 7d mk2. As a 7D mk2 owner I would love the 4 Mpix extra.
+Thomas Pointer My bad. I thought I remembered the 7D II having the larger sensor.
Please give review on canon new t7i (800D)
It has same Dual AF , 45 Cross Type , 24MP Sensor , 1080p/60fps
Which one you'll recommend for a normal user ?
You just have to weigh how important that is to you.
Good review! Would you please do a comparison video amongst 80D, D500, X-Pro2 and A6300? I personally don't think performance of 80D's sensor could keep up with the others.
+Steven Lui Wow - do you have any idea how much work that would be?
+Dustin Abbott I know a lot of hard work would be required to prepare such a comparison. It would be great if you could compare 80D with any one of the three.
In terms of low light and dynamic range is 80D better than nikon d7200?
I can't answer that, as I'm not a Nikon shooter.
Dustin Abbott okay plz let me know how Canon 80d performs under low light and is the dynamic range satisfactory?
You'll have to look at my coverage and determine that for yourself. I test all of those things.
Any preparable picture style profile ..
I usually choose Fine Detail in Canon cameras where available, but you can edit any profile to your preference to increase color saturation, sharpness, etc...to your taste
Thanks for the excellent review, but, there's noise when I increase the ISO
That's true to some extent with all cameras.
Digic 6 Processor or Digic 7 as per the specs I could find?
Digic 6
which sdxc or sdhc can you advice me for my canon80d? which performs the best?
cause i've a lexar 1000x 128gb SDXC II U3 150mb/s transfer and 80mb/s write, it works very well, but i'd say that sometimes (1/5 times), while i'm recording a simple video in 1920x1080 fhd 25fps it stops.
I'm currently using a Lexar Professional 1000x SDXCII card with a 150MB/s transfer rate. No problems so far.
So given the fact that j have the budget what would you recommend 80d or Sony a6500(if I want I could go for the 7sii or 7rii). But I am concerned about the lense selection for Sony's cameras.... need camera for UA-cam videos I'll be doing some tutorials on computer science.
If you feel like you don't need 4K video, the 80D will be the best handling camera for you. If you need 4K, then go for the a6500.
Dustin Abbott(null) well, are 4K videos needed for tutorials?
I doubt it. I shoot most of my episodes in 4K but downrez them to 1080P for UA-cam.
Dustin Abbott then I'll stick with canon 80d and will add some good lenses to it thank you very much.
Glad to hear your experience.
@dustin does it have same center point focus issue while using wide aperture like its predecessor 70d ?
I haven't noticed such an issue. I've been using one a fair bit for over three months now.
Thanx for d info :)
what about buying canon 80d in 2020 ? still worth it for portraits and filmmaking ?
If 1080P is fine and no LOG for filmmaking. I'm not sure what your priorities are.
@@DustinAbbottTWI filmmaking .. but also wanna make good portraits though
I would probably recommend going another direction. Try something like the a6500 if your priority is filmmaking.

Have you calibrated the focus? To be fair, though, I had some issues getting consistent focus when I shot with the 85 on several different bodies.
@dustin yaa its perfectly focusing with the center af point... nd the rule of calibration is to focus with the center af point... nd its doing fine with that center af point... but at same distance it is back focusing with the off center af points... strange ! isn't it ??

Is anyone else have this problem with the 80d & sigma 18-35? I have noticed that when I use live view with the AF square box and zoom in 5x or 10x, the 80d doesn't focus as sharp and crisp as possible. I have compared it to my canon 5t and even though is slower, it does a better job at focusing in this way. Its not bad for my purposes, and If I have the time, I do everything manually anyways but it is annoying.
The Sigma 18-35 is pretty well known for not playing well with Canon's xxD series (70D is worse).
+Dustin Abbott thank you. I feel a bit better.
Hi. Great review. 80d vs 7dii photography for indoor sports ? Video/stills 20/80. Thanks!
I like the 80D a lot, but the 7DII has the faster burst rate and deeper buffer. It depends on your needs.
Dustin Abbott thank you. Great channel. Subscribed 👍
"If you want to do hardcore video production" you made me chuckle lol :-D
+666Maeglin You're welcome :)
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Sir, Nice review pretty helpful and detailed.... I would like to ask if, you have tested the old 18-135 and the new 18-135 lens that comes with the 70d and 80d.... thanks a lot!!!
+Boom PewPew Definitely. You can see my review of the new 18-135 here: bit.ly/1TmnNlX
Interesting feedback.
Yeah, we will all be better with that 5D Mark IV. lol Once I can afford it. The Lord won't let me blow money like I used to. So I have to earn it. If so be it i'll stick with the 6D for years more. I've had God rebuke me before for charging things.
Excellent insight, Dustin... well spoken... real world delivery is the word ... :)
Love my 80D ! AMAZING !
+Jensen Chua I'm glad you are enjoying it, too. It's a excellent camera.
How is it compared to a 5D mark ii and iii
It compares favorably in some ways, though it's hard to compare APS-C to full frame.
Dustin Abbott I might just buy the 80d with some nice lense and then buy a 5D later, thanks
love this kind of review. Thank man! Bye from Italy
+Davide Giannico You are welcome, Davide. Planning on visiting your beautiful country next year.
I am a beginner & m interest in photography only not in videography so I am confused in 760d & 80d 🤔
Which is best for me?
Plss do rply
M waiting.
+Mahendra Kanodiya If there is a big price difference in your market, the 760D is fine. If there isn't a big difference, the 80D is the better camera.
Dustin Abbott thnk u for rply and I'll go with 80d now 😊✌🏻️
As a professional audio engineer, while watching your video I cannot help but continually stare at your lapel mic and the fact that it is facing upside down. LOL.
That enables me to get consistent audio with fewer distracting sounds from s’s and p’s
Cool
Great work, an excellent video. I have a Canon 70D that just die on me after 2 years of casual use. Canon ask me for $419 to fix it or I can buy a new camera like the 80D. I'm afraid that after a while the 80D just die on me too. I have been using Canon cameras for many years and I love the Canon 70D but I feel that lately Canon it is dropping the ball went it comes to quality on their new cameras. Any thoughts on that? Thank you!
I've never had any of my Canons fail on me, so that's definitely not my experience. I think you will find the 80D a very nice upgrade to your 70D.
Thanks I will do that and get me a 80D. Keep the good work!!!
Very informative Dustin, thank you.
My pleasure
6D II's low light performance looks great. Would you do a review after its release at about August?
Thanks for the review. I own one and I really think it was a great purchase. I did upgrade from a rebel series camera. I like the dynamic range it has to offer.
It's a pretty strong upgrade from the Rebel series.
Thanks for the beautiful review.
You're welcome!
I have a 70D and I am going to upgrade this fall to the 80D
I think you'll appreciate the update. Nice strides in basically every direction.
thanks
I might do the same, but I think I'll wait for the 6D mk II announcement before I decide. At one point I thought about getting a (used) 6D and keeping my 70D but I'm not so convinced it's worth it for the IQ and low light performance alone... I'd maybe rather go for the 80D or wait for the 6D mk II.
I would agree with you. I would rather save that money for the new 6D Mark ii. I expect it to be a beast of an entry level full frame. I have the 6D and I totally love the image quality. I have no complaints about unless I am trying to use for applications that is not design for.
I am reading that the 6D2 is a FF 80D
Thank for the review.... really need it. I consider to buy the 80D for may indie film making and perhaps, it's okay for me to not got the 4K yet. Canon's image quality from it's sensor it's the greatest that I know for color rendering. And it just arrived at Indonesian store.
sounds like a good fit, then.
I've one ordered and should be here any day.
+dagocleo Enjoy!
***** I'm not sure what you are referring to but that's not even close to being true.
Tamron will have to release a firmware update for that lens (and they will)
+dagocleo there will be. This periodically happens when new cameras are released-particularly those with new technology
Thanks you for the Excellent Review I got one and i am going to receive it in 2 weeks till then i am going to watch your review times and times more
Sounds like a plan! Enjoy
I want canon DSLR in budget 70000 inr which is best
If you want full frame, try the EOS RP. If you want to stick with APS-C the 80D is still a good choice.
Brillant Review!
Thank you!
Bought one a month ago used. Still a nice camera.
Enjoy!
I'm just on my way to store☺
