Hey! Thanks for the marvelous Videos and Tutorials you made. I bought SDP and the buyers guid which helped me a lot. I got a 80D and would like to know if you would rather get the Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 or a 70-200mm 2.8 fora fast zoom. i got the Sigma 18-35mm, a canon 50mm 1.8 and the 18-135mm kit. Thanks for your help!

Hello Alyxx86 Just curious about your lens selections. What type of photography do you shoot? I shoot mostly Landscapes. I have the Canon 70-200 f2.8, the Sigma 50-100 f1.8 and now I'm trying to decide should I get the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 or the Sigma 17-50 f2.8. The 18 to 35 is very heavy and no OS. the 17-50 is lighter, has OS and is less than half the price. Do i need another super fast lens for Landscape photography. I think not but so many people rave about the 18 to 35 it's hard to pass up.

    • @Alyxx86
      @Alyxx86 7 років тому

Claude C I do street and landscape with the 18-35. It's also very good for astro. I love this little lens and because of the cropfactor it's comparable to a 24-70mm in fullframe terms. In my opinion the crop-optimised lenses are generally better than FF lenses.

Thanks for a great video but really confused about Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 lens. Many are recommending this online as the best lens you could possibly buy for the 80D, but there are far more people saying it has disastrous AF on canon cameras and particularly the 80D! Which is it?!

Had to buy a new camera since my entire camera bag was stolen in Zurich as I was on my way to Jerusalem. Unable to take photos in Israel, I now have solid memories of things that I want to photograph the next time that I am there. I had an Olympus for my underwater photography, which I replaced. But, I upgraded from my Canon Rebel t6i to the 80D. Previous, I had watched tutorials that you and your wife produced which I had both enjoyed while learning a tremendous amount about photography and camera equipment. So, I went to your tutorials to learn about my new Canon. With my new camera in hand, I spent all afternoon watching your EOS80D tutorial--(bought your photography book) while taking notes--the tutorial is fantastic--I'll probably watch it again. Plus, I have now learned how to connect my camera to my phone so that I don't lose pictures, if my camera is ever stolen again. Thank you so much for your expertise, clarity, honest opinions about settings, lenses and general photography. Earlier today, I had purchased a subscription to Lightroom (bought your book), updated my cloud settings and I am backing up my computer weekly--I don't ever want to lose pictures again. Thanks for all of your help with my new camera.

This tutorial may have been up for a while but I'm very grateful you did this. After 20 years of no camera I took the plunge and got the Canon 80D. I love it and this has helped me get started and familiar with this camera. Still much to learn but I'm excited. My last camera was a Canon 35mm SLR. Had all the goodies speed winder, effect filters, multi lenses. way back then i had the mind set take lots of pics to get that one good one. I loved B&W i even had a small dark room i truly enjoyed developing them. Unfortunately i dropped it at baseball game and from day it had a light leak and i just never sent it in to be repaired.
I have a small channel and this will help in better quality video. I hope you don't mind if i share this video with my viewers in case any may get a camera for Christmas so they can check out your channel. You are informative and great teacher and very knowledgeable with your equipment. Every day i'm learning more. My next thing will be a lapel mic but this camera took a bite out of my budget I'm going to have to stay in the $100- $125 range so i'm starting my search now to find a descent one in that price range. I'm glad i found your channel and excited to get back in to photography.

I had not been shooting on anything other than green square and its refreshed everything I learned when I first started! I am now helping my friends and other people to learn about photography! I am definitely going to check out your books! Im very excited! Thank you so so much! This was so helpful!

You don't need a remote shutter timer with an 80D. You can set a time for your bulb mode and leave the shutter open for as long as you want without any extra equipment. You can find this option in settings. Another option is to connect the camera to canon app on your smartphone and trigger your shutter on and off via smart phone in bulb mode. That also saves you from having to keep your finger physically pressed on the shutter button. Not blaming Tony and chelsea, make a huge tutorial like this and you are bound to miss something. You guys are doing great work :)

Amazing video, here I am sitting with my brand new Canon 80D playing around with the settings with you and within 1 hour a lot of confusions have been cleared, I now have a good idea for the different shooting modes, clearly understood navigation of the menu and the items on the displays. Perfect video for starting with the camera, well presented as well.

I just bought this camera a couple weeks ago, my 2nd Canon DSLR, my other an XSI. This camera is a much bigger leap than I expected and have been stuck on a few things I just didn't get. I wasn't positive that the camera wasn't defective but thought it was me and it was. This video explains the camera very clearly and much easier than flipping manual pages back and forth. Thank you, I'm excited about the camera again.

Wow.. Just ordered my D80 today, and will have it tomorrow, and this Video is AWESOME.. It answered so many questions for me, Since I'm a Nikon guy, except for my video camera, and older model Canon cameras. Setups are amazingly similar, but the D80 seems a little easier to access settings. Thank you, for providing a video that is so "peaceful" to watch, no yelling, and no distractions, just information. My stepson who is 14 is getting into photography in his Freshman year of HS, so I'm going to get him one of your books, along with one for myself... Thanks again...

Thank you thank you for this tutorial! I got my 80D in 2017 and searched UA-cam for tutorials but didn't find anything really helpful. Mostly unboxing videos. I don't know why this video never came up in the search! I found it after buying your books last week. I guess I should have bought them sooner! Now I understand my camera so much better. Incredibly helpful. I've had this camera for months as a beginner. I've adjusted several things (back button focus, single focus point, etc.) by watching other video tutorials, but this one video gave me a more complete understanding of the camera's settings than all the other research and learning that I've done. I also highly recommend the Stunning Digital Photography book. I'm several chapters through it in iBooks and I've learned so much to help me go from a complete amateur to gaining some confidence in the story I'm telling with my photos (and video as well). That coupled with some technical know-how has made me appreciate photography and videography even more. Thanks for your hard work on these great resources!!

Recently bought the 80D to get back into photography again, after many years of not shooting. Checked for some reviews and tutorials but it is mostly about comparing it with high-end (full frame) cameras and pointing out what the 80D lacks. I know there is always better equipment available, and I don't need someone to explain that to me. What I was looking for was a helpful guide to learn more about my camera, and this overview offers more information than what I was hoping to find. On top of that, it is presented and produced professionally. Thanks for your great work, keep it up! (subbed)

This is the first video I've watched on this channel. I know the video is a few years old so maybe you've already made improvements. I've only had my EOS 80D a few weeks but have had previous camera experience and know the 80D at a novice to intermediate level. This video was extremely informative and I did learn a few new things about the settings. However, I thought the video was a bit too fast paced and the camera buttons and settings could have been presented a lot slower. Some sections of the video that I had interest in had to be played over and over again basically freeze framing to catch exactly which button was selected or what menu on the live view screen was being briefly shown. I can't wait to find time to view more of this channels content and read the bought I bought from this amazing team. Thanks!!

Thank you so much Tony for the video! I just bought a Canon 80D to take family photos and portraits on vacation. The video is very informative and makes all those buttons and options less intimidating. I am a beginner photographer just wanting to take a few good shots of my family. Just bought your book as well! Can't wait to start learning more about taking good photos from you. All the best to you and Chelsea.

Thanks, Tony! Just ordered a 80D to replace my 60D backup. Your instructional video is a great overview of all of the features and I really look forward to many of the advanced features, especially the touch screen and faster FPS burst rate. B&H had a special incentive that included a camera case, higher life battery and premium SD card.

Really helpful. I saw your book on amazon and almost bought it. But decided to see what videos I could find online to help for free. While searching for tutorials for my camera, I found this video. I didn't realize you guys were the same folkd I was considering buying the book from until another video. Seeing how much 1hr made a difference I decided to buy the book and am eager to learn even more! Thanks!

You can also set the back button to hold focus. This allows you to use the default button to get focus and the press and hold the AF-ON, (back button), to hold focus. You can the release the default button, re-compose your shot and then press the default button to take the picture.
This came in handy when I couldn't zoom in on my subject and get focus due to there not being enough light. So I went wider with the lens allowing more light in and then I was able to press the default button and get focus. Then I pressed and held down the AF-ON, back button, releasing the default front button and then zoomed in to my subject, pressed the front button all the way down to capture the image. It worked great. It's just another way of controlling your camera while keeping the default front button as it came from the factory.
I wasn't really sure when people talked about recomposing a picture meant but I'm assuming that this is one method of recomposing a picture.
Yes I'm new to all this photography stuff.
Thanks for all your time, effort and dedication to photography by helping others. I recently purchased a Canon 80D, finished reading the 240 manual, and have watched over 100 videos on UA-cam already. The Canon 80D is feature packed and an awesome camera for the enthusiast.

The reason I switched from the Nikon D5500 to the Canon 80D was the lens motor noise ruining my audio. The STM lenses are dead silent (except for the 50mm). Loving the switch, even though I do believe image quality was better on the Nikon. Your point of usability with the Canon is spot on.

Tony, this is by far the best tutorial I've seen on the 80D. Thank you. I've followed you on IG as well!
As for the 80D, I just purchased it, along with a Tamron 70-200mm 2.8. The pictures are mind blowingly awesome.

    Hi Tony,
Real great video, thanks for making it.
Also can you make a "detail" Tutorial on using the 80D for video (interviews, youtube, kid videos...etc.)
some questions I would like to see someone answering and explaining
    - what's the difference settings for video with examples? (Metering, Exposure , White Balance...etc.)
    - recommended settings for video.
    - focusing the video right, as well if you are a one man show?
    - what lense to buy for video ? tripod?
    - do we need image stabilization on the tripod? can we use lineses without IS? like the pancake lenses?
    - can you take photos during video ?
    - what can be changed in post? do we have something like a Raw video?
    - what not to do during video? what makes the camera shake ? or does it matter?
    - you said avoid zooming while recording..... why?
many thanks and keep up the great work

Just bought the 80D and had to watch an sdp.io video first (of course). I learned a lot and I thank you. Only caveat is at the 24:03 mark where you discuss the "little button by the shutter" to address the focus mode select: yours shows it on the Live view screen but when I did it it would display, "This function is not available during live view shooting." It took me over 30 minutes of rewinding and experimenting before I realized that I had to depress the 'INFO' button 3 X to get into the screen you showed on the video. I heard you repeat the same words so many times that I can still hear them as I type :-) The plus side is - I will never forget how to get into focus select again.

You sir are a great teacher. Thank you. I just picked up a pretty pristine 80d for just over $700 us.
I kinda stopped using my trusty old XTi because my iPhone took better photos with limitations. Mainly just used the DSLR for our annual
Wildflower spectacular. I’ve been a shutterbug for fifty years. Now I intend to start taking Photographs rather than snapshots.
But this whole Covid thing has us revisiting DSLR Photography. The Comet really piqued my interest in new ways.
Living just outside Sequoia National Park we enjoy fantastic night skies. Great stuff. New subscriber. Thank you so much.

Hi Tony, just bought my first real DSLR, Canon 80D, your video was a huge help as the book that came with it, the writing was so small, I needed a magnifying glass to read it...would have liked the 55-135mm, but the camera only came with the 18-55mm
    Now the fun begins :-)
