  • So the Canon 70D, this was the camera dreams were made out of when I first got into cameras. So I figured I'd take another look at it, almost ten years later and see if it still holds up, especially with the bargain bin pricing.

My dad bought a dead condition 70D late 2020 for $96 (With a physical condition that is still very good and without a vignetting LCD + Battery Grip included). And thank God my dad was able to fix it without having to replace the main board. Until now the 70D is still working fine and I use it as my daily main camera.

I got this Camera when it came out in 2013.
I remember I was excited about the new features it proposed.
Back then I used a Canon 650D and the touchscreen capability + the Wifi Direct feature really caught my attention when it was announced.
Just because I'm a video guy, this camera advertised as a video camera DSLR really got my interest so I decided to buy one at that time.
It was one of the best camera I've ever used and I was satisfied with it.

I always had problems with shooting video with this thing (same with the 60d). I don't know what the problem is there. I had several different types of expensive SD cards that all preacher how fast they were but always it just stopped recording randomly. The autofocus is great, and with magic lantern you can technically shoot up to 2k in raw video which is neat. It's overall a very good camera but honestly I wish that by the time I got to the 70D I just went mirrorless already.

My first camera was a 60d, and I'd still recommend it as a first camera. Strong build, good selection of rapidly depreciating lenses, not too big, cheap. Great line.

Couple this with a Sigma Art 18-35mm F1.8 and you got one of the most powerful combos out there for the 70D. Closest way to get to a log profile is to get the cinestyle color profile. If you want focus peaking for photos and videos get Magic Lantern...you can also get 14bit RAW video with ML

I always thought about it for the dual pixel autofocus, but then I started saving, saved enough money and got the Lumix S5. Absolutely love it. I DO need to get that EF adapter for it, I had a cheaper one and that may have been my one return to amazon aside some broken LED panel.

    • @aChairLeg
      @aChairLeg  Рік тому

The S5 is a truly amazing camera, if I wasn't doing youtube I would have gotten one around the time it came out for sure. You also def want to skip on the cheap adapters if you want to use it for any form of auto-focus, I've never heard of them working well. The Metabones works well enough for me, but I heard it's majorly improved on the a7iii series

Still loving in in 2022! Looking to upgrade to full frame in the nearest future though

  • @lifetimesofamultiplemediam1003

Had a pair of them back in the day, and they did the job. Had to upgrade because they struggled in low light, and only had one custom mode position. The 70d is OK for a casual mixed media cam. However, watch out if you're looking to buy, as some of them had dodgy mother boards that would suddenly crap out giving Error 80 on the back screen. It was so bad, Canon had to issue a recall…

I've been using the 70D for years now, and randomly started wondering what other people say of it, which led me here. Prior to this one I had 40D, so it was a major skip in terms of photos and an even bigger one in terms of video (well duh). Since then I've moved through multiple generations of gopros, but I still like the video from the 70D. Clearly I have no idea what I'm doing, but I just really like the 70D video over the gopros if it isn't about image stabilization.

So sarcastic! That camera still beats all cellphones to this day. It's a perfect starter or a keeper for casual shooters. A perfect learning learning tool for it's simplicity. 10 years ago it was revolutionary for it's specks, HD abilities, flippy screen, etc. Time is flying fast so be assured your multiK camera today will be worthless just few years from now. Respect for old but not Obsolete.

Why I chose Canon 70D/80D for video over mirrorless Sony is the 2 STM lenses from Canon: 18-135mm and 55-250mm.

  • @subarusensei3685
    @subarusensei3685 9 місяців тому +1

I chose a 70d (got it summer of 21)for 600 ish) was in mint condition and 7k shutter iirc and came with a 18-135 (which broke but got a 24-105 f4L) but got it due to ef mount, dual pixel(do photo and video) mostly photo this camera is a beast at that and lpe6 due to friends using it (loan chargers and batteries) I love this camera even though I accidentally smashed the top screen (not the flipy) the mode dial is beatup. But its my workhorse that I use and love.

I am a bit underwhelmed by video auto focus of my 70D and 80D. It's very much praised but my camcorder kind of worked better for me. But I don't know that much about video, maybe it's because my camcorder had a very small sensor, so easier to have things in focus?

I know I'm late to the party, but I've had some luck with some better features, though it can be overwhelming, via Magic Lantern. I've also found a cheaper lav mic setup that gives you the headphone jack to listen to your audio. just a few other options that you can use for those extra features.

Hey, thats a great Idea. I have that Samson mic, and it has a headphone jack - but that thing is a boat anchor. Wouldn't want to do a brake job with that! I am going to check into Magic Lantern. Hopefully its not something that will cause another addiction because of my geekness propensities. (I just checked, and there does not appear to be a build for the 70D)

I've shot great football video with this camera several years ago. I forget exactly what I did, but I know there were some settings I had to download to the camera. I think they were to sort of flatline the footage so that color editing in post would be more natural. . ? It's been years. But yeah, with good lenses, you can get really nice photos & videos. Older Canon APS-C DSLR (and full-frame if one _needs_ full-frame) cameras are great. I've had my 7D since its launch and I recently picked a 40D in like-new condition with a moderate shutter count, for $80. EF and EF-S glass is _abundant_ on the used market. I bought an R50 to learn mirrorless, and the flippy screen is awesome, so much so that now I'm considering picking up just one more gently loved older Canon DSLR so I can have a flippy screen in that realm. Maybe a 70D is calling me.

Not sure why but my nikon d3500 camera with two lenses(18-55mm and 70-30mm) was purchased like 6 years ago on best buy for like 530$ and I went to check how much is worth nowaday and it's costing $675 for a renewed one with a single lens. Thank you! I got the Z a while ago because I wanted a rwd v6 japanese car for a decent price. Was in decent shape when I got it barring oil leaks. Ended up deciding to get rid of it because constant problems, cooling leaks, overheating, oil leaks (everywhere), all four wheel bearings going bad, grinding in 3rd and 5th, parking brake failing, power steering pump, alternator and the list goes on haha. Love the car, not the repairs. I'm not sure about the price disparity with Nikon cameras, but I do plan on taking a closer look at them one day, I just have to do one brand at a time so I'm not pouring $2k a month into my channel that makes less than $2k a year lol.

heres my story, imma editor 1st then a cinematographer then a photographer. I started out with a a6000 and learned almost everything it had to offer. made some money as well. and 2020 when the s7siii was anounced I was super pumped but I didnt have money at that time so I stayd quiet. later on I worked in a production house where the had 2 blackmagic cameras and those cameras were amazing. a few months ago I had enought money to get the a7s3 so I got it and boi was I dissapointed. the autofocus is awesome, slowmotion is awesome and it feels awesome but I was pampered with high quality video from the black magic that I can push to the limits and playaround. so now I use my a7siii to take photos more that videos. moral of the story, "dont get fancy shit" not saying the a7siii is a bad camera, I am just saying I was expecting too much. tho I wont sell it cause its easier to use and has smaller file sizes than the blackmagic, and I really like the photos from it, more than canon or fuji.

Just bought a 70D based off this review and a few others! 23k on the shutter and a 6-mo warranty so hoping that will protect me from the potentially bad motherboard issues people have mentioned here.
I’ve been using the 5D Mark II for all my videos and while the quality is great, especially RAW video with Magic Lantern, I cannot stand manual focusing for videos.
I wanted an 80D but didn’t like paying an extra $200 just to get 60FPS. If I need slo-mo I’ll just use my GoPro. Putting it on a 24-105 F/4 but with the crop I may need to get a 16-35 instead…
At the end of the day, If it’s good enough for Casey Neistat then it should be good enough for me!

I bought my 70d off of eBay about a year ago. Though it was cosmetically perfect, it went belly-up after one use. After investigating, I found out about the motherboard issue (and I luckily found out about the recall, though I feared the recall had already expired). I contacted canon and was forthright about the fact that I bought it second-hand. They triaged the issue as a recall-related mishap and I got my repaired camera back in the mail 10 days later, good as new, and without spending even a dime for shipping.
Long story short: my experience is that this particular issue is not reason enough for anyone to avoid buying this camera, and it’s certainly not a reason to worry that it will fail you some day if you already own one. Canon should stand by it.

And a HSS/TTL-compatible flash. I can just use the on-camera flash to trigger the off-camera one. Abd a small LED video ligth. It all fits in a small camera bag. And it's versitile as H*LL! :) The 5D and 6D is mostly for studio, the EOS-M is if I need a kamera to just drag around in the forrest or something, just with the kit lens and a realy small flash. It's built like a tank!!! :)
But my goto camera for everyday flexible use is still the 70D. :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again.... Why Canon adds video features to an entry level DSLR is pointless!! I understand that since DSLRs have hit the market, it's kicked the popularity of the ol' video camera in the butt but IMO, video in DSLRs should be introduced only to mid to upper end DSLRs.
Leave lower end or entry level DSLRs to take just stills so the camera can do a better job of doing just that!!

    The 60D was the best feeling Canon I ever held in hand, and I held 1D, 5D, 6D, 7D, 1000D and 400/500D.

They're good at making APS-C cameras, I think there isn't really a need for a full frame Fuji

You can really tell a mirrorless snob that knows absolutely nothing about photography or DSLR cameras made this video. The title of the video is out of sync with the negative bias throughout the entire "review." EF mount lenses are not "on their way out" because certain types of photography rely on DSLR-specific features such as an optical viewfinder. Regardless, the long and excellent range of EF lenses will never be irrelevant. Lens technology doesn't advance anywhere near as fast as camera tech does, and the quality of lenses from companies that have been in the game for decades won't be matched by the mirrorless market for quite awhile; especially not at the prices you can pick up EF lenses for on the secondary market. And for anyone that needs confirmation that the gear matters way less than the person behind the lens, I have shot photographs and videos that are 100x better than anything in this review on a 2013 EOS Canon SL1 and a 2010 Nikon D3100. Those images are still selling in fine art prints for me to this day. Invest in amazing glass and any camera body will do. The Sigma Art series is top of the line and less than Canon L series lenses. And you can buy them used for way less than it costs to invest in a whole mirrorless camera system anyway.
