It’s funny, you post this and the following morning, my hatch comes down and crack the top of my head. Haha
Bushwookie NW oh no! Hope you’re alright! Time to get sic-modding with these stronger struts!
Thanks for this video. My original struts and bushings were toast. Watching this made it so much easier. Thanks again for all you guys do for us weekend shade tree mechanics 😁
You're very welcome. Great to hear our videos are helping you out. Happy Wrenching!
Your timing couldn't be better. Just this morning I got fed up with my rear hatch not staying up and was going to look into it. You just save me a ton of research time! Thanks
You're welcome Jason.
the quality of y'alls videos is insane! keep em coming with the 3rd gen 4Runner!!
Thanks! We appreciate the nice compliment. And yes, we will keep them coming.
Love the videos keep them coming! Long live the 3rd gen T4R. Just put a Scion stereo head unit in my 2001 really impressed with it.
Andrew D thanks for the comment! Happy wrenching
Like always great video, did this when I changed my struts. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Tim.
Y’all are the best, thanks again.
Thanks Jon. We've all benefitted from the sharing of knowledge via the internet and Sean and I are just doing our part to give back to the DIY community. Happy Wrenching Jon!
Thanks for the video guys. I was about to buy these from Toyota...saved me some cash.
You're welcome.
Nice tutorial. I was able to cut spacer in half with hack saw. Put wooden dowel in ID of spacer and clamped both ends on table. Filed down side about 1/16" to fit snuggly in U bracket.
Glad you like the video and good job getting it done. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Just did this sicc maintenance mod. Great work guys!
Good Job! It's very satisfying to have struts that actually lift and hold the hatch up without dropping on your head.
Thank you guys for continuing to make these repair videos! The video quality and editing are always getting better. Question: I know you have a cooling system flush video, but would y'all be so kind as to do a heater core flushing tutorial? My air isn't that hot when it's on and I've done all the other steps in the factory service manual to try and fix it.
Thank you again for all the time and wisdom you give the community!
Hey Dude, we haven't run into anyone yet with a need to just flush the heater core. Have you checked that the heater valve in the engine bay against the fire wall is actually turning when you operate the temperature adjuster?
@@TimmyTheToolman indeed I have checked that and it does fully turn/rotate to allow the flow through, as well as I have pushed it all the way to the correct side with my finger. The air that is coming out is warm, but it is nowhere near what my '02's heat is putting out. Alrighty then. Will stay tuned for what's next to come. Thanks for everything!
You Guys are a life saver !!!
I don't know if we actually save lives with our videos, but who knows, maybe we do.
Just ordered the parts! Thanks
You're welcome Chase.
My one 3rd gen mod I took on without you guys. I used the same shocks, but did not think to make spacers or bushings and ended up using my noggin as the support stick. I’ll take a peek and see how the wear is coming along. Those shocks do the trick, just get them started and get out of the way.
Good job gettin er dun Brian. Way to use your head.
Great video !!!. I did that to a while ago. Keep posting videos!!!.
Leino26 thanks dude
I found it much easier to unbolt the top brackets from the body instead of trying to line up the holes by moving the gate. Just used some blue loctight during reassembly. The modified nylon spacer/washers work great!
Good to know.
Bought these and used a heat gun in lieu of the torch. Worked like a charm and cut through the spacer like butter.
Good technique. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome video, thanks man.
We're glad you like it. Are you a Jethro Tull fan? Your screen name leads me to believe so.
@@TimmyTheToolman HUGE Tull fan. And HUGE fishing addict. Perfect name for both.
@@aqualung1466 Gotcha. I reckon I guessed right.
Thanks sean!
Sean says you're very welcome.
Great video timmy brother
Thanks Antonio. Sean was the brain child for his job and I did the filming.
@@TimmyTheToolman you both did great timmy sean was great too been looking for something to help with the gap on the struts I used a ton of thin washers what I had at the time
Nice!
Thanks!
Another tip I figured out because my lift gate always sags in the winter is to use an adjustable hiking/skiing pole to prop it open. I put the tip on the plastic where the latch is and the grip close to the bottom of the window. Incase you don't have a painters stick.
Thanks for the tip. I have adjustable trekking poles to for backpacking.
Nice 👍👌

Thanks for the video, nicely done. I got strongarm 4286 from Rock auto for $17.75 each, Monroe was cheaper
You're welcome. Are the Monroe struts any good? I've heard they're not as good as the Strong Arm struts.
I wish I had watched your video first because 4286 don't have enough lifting power than 6815 in cold weather, I would go with 6815 . Amazon has a better deal than Rock Auto. About Monroe struts, I guess somebody else needs to answer your question, I really don't know.
@@transformer889 Yeah, the 6815 definitely seem to be the way to go. Thanks for the comment.
I just bought the stock toyota struts for 45 per piece from the dealer. 200 per side is crazy. Joe Joe on Facebook can get them 45 each OEM
Joe Joe is the man.
I need this. Thanks for the vid. What lift gate is on the black 4runner? I noticed the license plate was on the side and not the center.
Sean put on a JDM Hilux SURF rear hatch on his rig.
Two questions/suggestions
1. Would it be easier if you put the bottom pin first then the top? On the top pin there are less parts to align when pushing the pin.
2. The bottom washer/spacer sits directly on the pin so should the ID of the washer be closer to the OD of the pin that is much smaller than 1/2"?
I'm not sure if it is mechanically possible to install these struts up side down but if it is than important thing not mentioned in the video is to install them with rod down cylinder top.
Thanks for the great video - not applicable for my Tacoma but looks like hood struts on my 5th gen 4Runner are going out so I was looking for reputable brands and more afordable than OEM.
Rysiu M 1. It can still be tricky to get the pin through the top if the bottom is already in. You are still having to wiggle the rear hatch up and down. But I’m sure both order of operations would suffice.
2. Technically speaking, you’re probably right about getting a smaller ID for the bottom washer, however if you compare the nylon washer to the stock washer that comes out, they have a similar amount of play with their fitment on the pin. Another $1.00 wouldn’t be a big deal to buy different nylon spacers for the bottom however the bag came with 6 pieces and it works out perfect to minimize the amount of washers you need to source. But good observation. That lower Pin could use a smaller nylon washer
👍👍 How would a rotary tool handle those nylon spacers? Anyone know?
We used some white lithium grease in an attempt to refresh our struts, seems to have helped a little... Nice how your gate just lifts now!
A rotary tool like a Dremel with a plastic cutting disk would work fine. You just need a steady hand to make a straight cut. You could put the sleeve in a bench vice, mark your line and carefully cut.
great job as usual! What camera do you use to film?
Thanks, we're glad you like it. We use a GoPro Hero 5 and we recently added a GoPro Hero 7 to the mix.
Thanks for the Video! You guys rock! Does the hatch stay open with the window down? Or on a steep incline? Much debate about this on t4r forums lol
4runner Nation Sean’s rear hatch on his 2002 T4R stays open with the window down and with a Gobi ladder on it.
@@TimmyTheToolman that is awesome! Great find once again! Thanks Tim for the reply aswell!
Can not wait to do this #sickmod! 😂🤙🏻🍻
can you do a rear hatch/liftgate regulator replace? the window on my 98 4runner sr5 dropped...got a replacement regulator but for some reason it seemed like some parts from the new regulator were missing until i searched online and found that i need a "rear window channel sub-assembly" and cant find any how to/diy videos or pictures...thank you
Howdy, this is not a repair on our list in the near future. If we find somebody with this issue local to us we would most likely help them out and make a video. Your best bet for quicker help is maybe go on T4R.org in the 3rd Gen section of the forum and start a thread and see if any guys have helpful advice for you.
Having trouble finding the nylon washer and spacer on Amazon. Is this something my hardware store would have?
Yeah, that's where Sean got his if I'm remembering correctly.
Do you know where to get the hardware? I have aftermarket struts and I need the bolts that fit the 6815 struts.
The hardware should be re-used from your original OEM struts. What seems to be the problem? Is it not working?
Had a weird thing happen, got the correct nylon spacers and sleeve but the sleeve didn't fit in the bracket. Just used some washers on each side and it's good to go. Oh yah anout hit me going up but need that power when the window is down.
Interesting the bushings didn't fit for you but good job adapting and getting the job done.
@@TimmyTheToolman was going to drill out the hole but it got too hot outside so cracked a beer and called it done.

I will do this mod soon. I am tired of my lift gate having no lift.
EveningCommuter true stories! Get them swapped out!
Thanks Tim, I bought some form advance auto and they are complete garbage. They barely work and when it’s cold out side forget about it.
The Strong Arm struts will work better for you for sure.
Someone who owned the truck before me must have lost the top pins and/ or clips because they just ran a bolt through the strut in its place. Any idea were I can find those pins and clips? I can't find them anywhere! Thanks!
Hey David, if you have a PicknPull or other type of auto wrecking yard near you, maybe you can find a 3rd Gen 4runner with the hood struts still there and you can grab those pins and clips you need. I do not know how to source them via an aftermarket seller.
@@TimmyTheToolman Will do. Also, thanks a lot for all your kickass how-to's! As someone who's dad didn't teach him how to work on cars, you guys make it possible for me. Respect! 🤛
@@davidnarozmusic You're welcome David. We appreciate the compliment very much.
For anyone doing this by yourself, I would recommend putting the bottom of the strut back in first.
Ok, thanks for the input.
Where can I get the bushings?
Check the video description for the part numbers. You can find them at hardware stores or possibly online.
I know this video is 5yrs old but 6815 doesn't seem to available anymore buddy of mine used the 4286 and they barely seemed to pop open the rear hatch. Anyone else having issues with the 4286?
It looks like these might be a version that has the added lifting force.

@@TimmyTheToolman Thanks for the reply, think I’ll still need to use nylon washers for spacers?
I lost a clippy... anybody know where I can get one?
courageous78 the c-clips can be found at the hardware store!
Anyone had any luck with finding those spacers online? I went to my local Hillman carrier and they looked about as blank as a empty piece of paper when I asked for these sizes and pns. I don't have any other carriers in this small town.
Have you tried sourcing them online? Amazon and Ebay usually have almost everything conceivable for sale.
@@TimmyTheToolman finally found them on Lowe's online! I was out of luck with my local place lol thanks for the great video!
You're welcome and good to hear you found what you needed online. Happy Wrenching!
I've got a 3D printer and printed the bushings from dylan77 on Thingiverse. Just installed them. Fit well. Let me know if you want a set. Printed with PETG which I like better than ABS/PLA.
Yes please!!!! That’s awesome. Did you find the link from our video description?
@@TimmyTheToolman Yep. The link was perfect. I had to scale the model 1000% for my printer (unit conversion issue). Love the Vids. How do I contact you?
Is the painter's stick resting on the window glass on the top? 😯
Yes, it's on the glass with a rag in between the glass and the painter's pole. It's tempered glass which is harder than you think to break. You'll do more damage resting it on the plastic interior panel.
@@TimmyTheToolman thank you! Wasn't sure if I was seeing it right ☺
@@marxccc No problem.
I’m getting tired of having to opening my rear hatch and having to push up on all the time . Doing this mod next week .
You'll like the result Josh. I did it on my 98 4runner and now the hatch flies up with zero effort from me and stays up.
What is the difference on those part #’s? One is cheaper
Dude, if you would have watched the first one and a half minutes of the video, you would have gotten your answer but I guess you must have skimmed past it. The #6815 struts have a stronger lifting force than the #4286 struts. I'd personally spend the extra money on the 6815 model struts.
@@TimmyTheToolman Thanks for the clarification. Noted to not skip next time...
@@alejandrodeleon8146 No worries Alejandro. Good luck with the swap and enjoy your hatch that now lifts up and doesn't come crashing down on your head.
Couple things. Where the deuce did you but the washers and spacers?
Second, you neglected to list a link to the dude on T4R.com for his blog. Would be nice to read up on how he did it.
Open the video description by clicking on "Show More". Sorry, no link to the T4R.org dude, but you don't need it. Everything you need to do this mod is in the video and video description.
I installed 6815s and it literally flung my rear hatch open so violently that it shook my entire truck. Took them off and I'm gonna try the 4286s...
Good to know. You wouldn't want your rear hatch flying off.
Timmy The Toolman good news is that it makes a great diving board now!
@@caseywallace4585 Sweet! You can set up your rig right next to a lake, get on the roof and spring off the hatch into the water. A new use for our rigs.
Timmy The Toolman I take it your hatch didn’t/doesn’t fly open after the mod?
@@caseywallace4585 That was Sean's rig and no his doesn't fly open like that.
Cool, bought the spacer by the exact part number you listed and it doesn't fit in the mount. Thanks for the help lmfao
That's interesting. Don't know why it wouldn't work for you.
I did too. And they worked perfectly.
@@trlp31 ok. That doesn't help me lmfao
I know this is a year old but is yours a 96? Mine is and I had the same problem. Maybe they changed it in the newer years or something.

As of now that set cost $33 on amazon. Its 2020 so I expected it to be $200 because this year has made everything worse. Happily surprised.
Edit: It was a different yet compatible model, the ones linked were $59 so its fine
I replaced mine on my 98 a couple days ago. Man, what a difference new struts make. No more getting hit in the head by the hatch.
😎👍🆒
We're glad you approve Biff.
anyone have a link for 6815, doesn't seem to be available anywhere
The supplier just ran out of stock probably. I bet they're just waiting for another shipment from China or wherever they are made.
There 169 dollers for 2 struts for the 6815 now on amazon
I would wait Antonio. I've heard rumor that the price has gone up due to a limited supply. Hopefully the available supply will increase soon and the prices will drop significantly.
