I watched this video yesterday and tried it out with my 7 MO Belgian Malinois. She had no prior experience with the 'around' command, but your encouragement in the beginning made me give it a go. After just 1 repetition, she understood what I want her to do and she was exhausted before 5 minutes (both mentally and physically). Thank You so much.
Anything new you try to teach your dog that is difficult makes them spend a lot of energy mentally to figure it out, aswell as giving the dog a good feeling for figuring it out, especially with shaping.
I pull elisted and foster Malinois & German Shepherds from shelters that have been failed by people, get them to decompress and trust again to be adopted, then with a very little amount of effort and dedication these dogs are phenomenal and so want to please. Mental stimulation is so critical and it doesn’t take hours a day to make them happy! Thanks for these videos.
I have 3 shepherds and have grown up with them but I have 1 make right now that seems to have zero interest in pleasing and just doing what he wants. He’s been marking in the house and because of his size he ignores my wife when I’m not home, would you have any tips ?
Thank you so much for your labor of love! I wish so much I could do what you do, I just love and admire these breeds so much. I'm heartbroken that I don't have what it takes to be a good GSD owner (according to the GSD breeder/professional trainer I took my GSD boy to). I love my GSD so much, but after 3 yrs he was still tense & anxious with us, so I found him the most amazing experienced GSD home, and when they send pics he's so relaxed and smiling. 😢🩷 It still hurts so bad, and I miss him terribly he was my sweetest, "bestest, most bootiful boi" ever. But I try to be glad he's much better off... 💔😢💔😢
I have to admit that I was sceptical about this channel at first, because there is so many hyped up ,,trainers" but after watching your videos I have to say that you are legit!
As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.
This actually reassures me that I'm not doing a bad job training with my akita. Sometimes I need to dispense his energy with a ring tug and I have him come to me around a garden patch. Will try to train around.
Awesome bro!!! I do this same excercise with a frisbee and having my dog follow specific commands in order to get me to throw it. 7 minutes and she walks the frisbee to the door and sits down. The moment we open the door she comes in the house and is DONE.
Did this exercise with my young Australian Shepherd today, and she LOVED it! Thank you so much! She gets plenty of exercise but definitely needed this mental stimulation. Can't wait to dive into your other videos! :)
We have also taught our dogs sign language with our words. So now if we look at them we sign and they do what we want without using our words. But we use our words a lot. But we are elderly people now and we just think about dogs need to learn sign language and we taught our grandchildren when they were young to do this also!
@@Im_nobodyspecial I have trained dogs for 35 years, and hand signals are super easy, you always give the hand signal as you are teaching the dog the voice command and action. Nothing next level. Hand signals are good for when you are in public, and just want to quietly direct your dog without voicing or you are in a conversation or someplace where you need to be quiet. It is also good because it doesn't teach strangers your commands.
EXCELLENT IDEA when it comes to an intruder!! The SWAR DOGS HAVE GERMAN or French commands. Ur grand babies can use SIGN LANGUAGE TO TAKE DOWN BAD GUYS!!
Hand signals are such a game changer in dog training. The one who taught me used treats to lure a dog a certain way and that it was easier for the dog to make the connection between a hand gesture and the behaviour than it is to associate a sound with the behaviour. Of course, once the hand command is learned you can add the vocal command too.
I taught my BoSheep, border collie/old English sheepdog and my Sheepadoodle with American Sign language abbreviated format. They reacted quickly to it and if I got the sign incorrect, I would get the head tilt that would hint to me I was wrong, grin. I then taught a couple of deaf dogs so they could be adopted. Fun for me and kept their brains ticking.
This is amazing! I’ve been looking for new, time efficient ways to tire out my 9month Doberman who has endless stamina. This method is mental and physical, which is exactly what my working dog needs. 🎉 thanks Andy!
My dog isn’t much of a tug fan (standard poodle) but loves to fetch. I’m using the around command to have him go around the barbecue grill (it works) and then throw the ball and play around with variations of that. And I just watched the video with the touch pad and now I’m thinking about working that into it as well. I noticed that working him mentally having to think and physically really seems to help with him being more relax. Thank you so much for these training tips - they have helped me work my guy better.
Thank you for this mental workout! Yesterday: only took a few minutes for our 9 mo old Mali to grasp the expectation with food lure, and a few more minutes of this play exercise for him to reliably go 'around' to have a toy thrown for him to retrieve. First we used a pole stuck in the grass, and then switched it up for a bucket, and then a bucket lid. You're right - he was wiped out after 5 minutes! Today: he demonstrated full understanding with toy as reward.
I have a 10 month old standard poodle. I watched this video two months ago, trained her to “around”, bought a post for the yard, made a flirt pole out of a horse lunge whip as the play reward. I have found this exercise is by far the best way to mentally and physically stimulate her, she thanks you so much 😊
I can’t wait to try this! I have a German shepherd and between track, school, and her I’m spread thin and don’t always have time for a 2+ hour walk and don’t always have the time for a good OB session. This will be a fun thing for her
We’re Getting a German shepherd puppy soon and I’ve been very aware that he’ll need lots of mental and physical exercise. Thank you for this tip! I’ll definitely be utilizing this method of play.
I do something like this with my 7,5 years old Australian shepherd. I have a tennis ball, ( it's his absolute favourite in the whole world). I tell him to lay down, trow away the ball, tell him to walk away and then I direkt him to go left, right, to stop or run. So I do that for x amount off time til him, "Go!". I can then tell him to bring it or to go somewhere with it, like to his yard, to my bike if we're out and I have it parked to tell him to take a break and stay put. It's really cool and he is so stubborn and smart. Love to give him jobs to do for rewards, pulling karts, sleds, biking, skiing. He loves to work 😍☺️
I have 5 Imported German Shepherds. 1 male, 4 females. I have been doing something similar for 3-4 years. I do it a little differently, I do it as a group. It takes a little longer because there are 5. Four will sit and wait, I call 1, do a heal, go through 4 weave poles, do a wait, i send them to a platform about 6" off the ground, (I have a platform for training stacking or standing still when at the vet, for being weighed, or groomed..) They have to hold a wait on the platform for a few, and when I release, I toss their tug or ball on a rope. They bring it back and go sit while i call for the next dog to do it. It actually goes fairly fast because we aren't focusing on obedience perfection, just stimulation, patience and burning energy. Also working and playing with distractions and playing nice. No competing because it's 1 dog at a time.
I just found you, I rescued a neutered three e year old BM/ GS cross. He’s a good boy. He was going to be euthanized, I had never had the nerve to have one but I felt I had no choice that day. His name is Rusty and he is getting adjusted to the pack and we are starting at step one training him. We are so lucky to have your channel. Thank you for being here.
Yes!!!!! Practical and brilliant! My 8 mo cane corso gets more out of our short sessions than an hour walk. A lightbulb moment went off for me when a youtuber said walks don’t wear out dogs. She and I have a ball “playing” (working on drills) and her intelligence blows me away.
I also have a Cane Corso teen (Tuxn) that is practically inexhaustible both physically and mentally. So I taught her to communicate her every want on talking dog buttons. So fun and amusing. So smart its spooky when she is speaking English. We play dog soccer. But I'll try this exercise for fun and variety. Checking out your profile now hoping to meet your Cane Corso there.❤
I love this. I am 63yrs young. I have a GS, he is 15 months. I was in a car accident a few weeks ago. No serious injuries, lots of bump and soreness. I do something similar with fresbees. He goes around me from heel. I am differently going to work the pole in. Let you know how it does. Love to see more of your training.
Andy - I just came across your channel 3 days ago and have binged a bunch of videos throughout my days. I have a 90 lbs, 10 month old, skin and bones workhorse of a GSD that I have wanted to train far beyond any dog I have ever had in the past. I have little children and this is my first real dog of my own. After two training sessions (followed by walks) implementing your approaches, concepts and techniques, I have an entirely different dog. I have grown up with GSDs never had one ever perform the way Alpha did today. You were able to succinctly demonstrate and describe effective techniques through a youtube video far better than the trainer I paid thousands to send my wife and Alpha to. Amazing work. Inspiring content. Can not possibly be more appreciative of this work you do. Cheers brother
Im getting my first Belgian today its a girl and she is just barely 1 years old with some prior training! I will definitely be subscribing and really look forward to the content you put out! Amazing boy you got there!
I like it. I'd also break it up even more as you build this. Hit him with a down on his way back to the tug or away. Hit him with a stay as he's going around. Be inventive as you are! Just keep building and avoid to much pattern once he's nailed it, add a new element. I enjoy your vids. I owned a Mal 45 years ago. I now have a Dutch Shepherd. These dogs are Whats life's about. Smiles
Right on time. I usually use "place" and "touch" for this exercise but I'm definitely adding this one. I've taught the command, just never thought to use it much. I really like the way you put this stuff out. So simple, just never crossed my mind
This is a great video for me to find! I’m three days in with my 1 yo rescue pup, they said she’s maybe blue healer/Aussie cattle, but she looks like a classic kelpie. Regardless, she is like a turbo jet with what seems to be a bottomless fuel tank, hence her name Jet. ❤ I’ve been taking her out every morning for walks with intermittent jogs doing over three miles and I’m not used to that much cardio yet (even with an active job)! This play option will be great to add in once she’s got some recall and obedience down. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks to this video I taught my dog the around command and I use it altogether with barkings to build up her energy when she doesn’t feel like training 😅😂 this video is a masterpiece btw
Thank you!!! I did this very kind of thing this morning, before my Mal's walk this morning, to unwind that top that gets wound up in them, before seeing this video. It beats walking a mile twice a day, trying to wear her out. But, as we live in an apartment, it was only after taking your advice and getting her an e-collar. That was a total game changer, after using just the tone and vibration one time. I can have off leash now, because she recalls immediately, just wearing the collar, and knows the boundaries she has to stay in...in a clearing where nobody goes. Thank you so much.
Perfect! A new trick to teach my boy. He's almost 10 months old. I agree that it doesn't take hours of exercise to chill out a Mal. I think mental stimulation is more exhausting for them. Although a good horseback trail ride is highly effective! 😂
My malinois is 5.5 months old caught onto it super quick (less than 30 mins) and class for medium/smaller gardens to get them running highly recommend (good to do before a walk)
4:30 impressed me the most!!! He just knew he couldn't get the toy because you didn't react and he understood what he did wrong and knew he had to go around again
Hi Andy, started this with my 14 month old Malinois. Who had become aggressive towards people. I realised it was because she was not getting enough exercise. I started taking out running at the side of me, while I was cycling. Although she came back obviously panting and tired. It did NOT really help with the aggression. Started your round the stick exercise last week, now she is ready getting the hang of it, and runs round to come back and bite me. She is mentally stimulated and tired, afterwards. When I do this late evening when I get home, she comes inside lays down at the side of me and goes to sleep. I'm doing it twice a day. It really helps me, as I have physical problems that make it very difficult for me to exercise her enough. Thanks
Fritz learned the around command yesterday, it looked like a train wreck but today he tightened it up a bit! We used food to encourage the "around" and a ball to reward. The beauty of this exercise is you can create many variations of it!!
Thank you so much for sharing this great mental and physical exercise with us, Andy! I taught it to my boy this evening, starting with food and then a toy. Wow! The results were incredible 😃 Again, THANK YOU! Greetings from South Africa
@@AndyKrueger How do you train a German Shepherd to "drop it" (a ball) after he retrieves it and brings it to me? He knows/does many commands I have taught him (including "come"/sit/down/stop/up/off), but he just will NOT drop the ball. The ball (or other soft toys) are all he cares about in life... he brings them to me wanting me to throw them all the time (I probably shouldn't do it when he is the one requesting ME to do what he wants). DROP is the one thing I can't get him to do. Thanks!
Training the go around may be simple for you ! so thanks for explaining how it is done for the mire mortals out here viewing . Always great stuff on your channel , thanks .
My dog loves going around objects she learned it for agility. Hard one for her is around a chair because she has to listen to the verbal cue around versus place. And I sometimes have to block her from placing herself on the chair because place is so valuable to her. Also I do right and left arounds using my body as a guide and “come around” to come around me for frisbee. We like to use road signs and trees at the park…
Not hard to teach and works like a charm. Marlo was going “around” without guidance in the second session! Thanks…I can do this with her in our small back yard or take a “walking stick” to the park. Love it!
I play fetch, border collie…and bring out the tug, then we go back to fetch…but we don’t just fetch, she has to go out for a pass….she comes back to me and catches instead of fetch…and she added this, she drops the ball..runs away, she likes me to give her commands to herd the ball, it starts with closer, i used that before knowing what is usually used for border collies forward movement, then i slow her down with a whoa, then i tell her to take each stepand finally it’s “wait” as she stands with her nose inches from the ball….she loves it so much….doesn’t take long to tire her out. I added the tug after one of your videos, i bought one for inside when the weather is too hot, soon it’ll be snow…so we can do the work either way. I added a leash to the tug so i can move her, pull her in, or drag the tug, she is too qucik it doesn’t really get far on the ground…it barely hits the ground, but she’s using her brain waiting for it to start. 👏🏼😁
Great video…..you definitely can’t wear out a mali with just physical exercise alone! I hiked the Colorado trail last September for 23 days…we pulled a 50 miler in 24 hrs…..he wasn’t even tired! About killed me! Definitely not like any other dog! Definitely not a dog for most!
@@AndyKrueger I actually just tried it but incorporated up command as doesn’t know around…yet…mine is jumping up in crook of tree about 5’ up….. reward with tug same principle but lil extra balance and jumping…wore him out quick…thx for sharing you saved my rotator cuff from throwing the damn ball 100 times!
Your farm is so inviting. What a great lifestyle for you, your dogs and family. Thanks for the exercise. My Cane Corso is very active mentally and physically. We have solutions. Talking dog buttons and dog soccer, but this is great for variety. We'll try it today.❤
I just teached my almost 2yo Border Collie the "around" command a he loves tug of war also!!! I can't wait to try it tomorrow, thank you for the tip 🎉🎉🎉
My 30 lb. mini goldendoodle would run around that whole lawn about 10 times then come back to play tug. After that she has to determine everything that was on that property for the last few days. She will expect treats in between all the discovery. These dogs are so intelligent they become bored if not stimulated physically and mentally! Dogs are amazing!
I've watched many of your videos, and I train my 2 the same way. When i play with them and take them on their walks, I mentally challenge them every time.

@@wendym5086 I combined it with a few other exercises and she was good for around 10-12 hours.

Love this and so simple! Thanks Andy.
Omg Andy I have never seen another trainer do this!!! Need to remember this when I get my malinois! Thank you!
Absolutely 🙏🏼
My malinois is 5.5 months old caught onto it super quick (less than 30 mins) and class for medium/smaller gardens to get them running highly recommend (good to do before a walk)
Nice!! 🙌🏻
If your new to this channel? This Man can definitely teach you some awesome Dog training skills. Do good Brother. Excellent channel!!
I appreciate that very much! 🙏🏼
Your welcome. Stay strong!
Thank you
This is so encouraging, I got one on the way!!
Awesome!
Don’t compare the first session to the finished product! Keep up the good work! 🙌🏻
Did this with my great Dane pup and she loves it! Thank you so much for this. It's awesome watching her run!
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Love the 5 minute challenges. There are so many different things you can do & there is so much that can be achieved also.
Agreed!
Love the energy of this guy!
🙏🏼
Great stuff, awesome stuff.....a MUST for the training repertoire......YES....thank you very much
You’re welcome! 🙏🏼
"Come on people!" Love it bro. Get back to paying them bills!
😆🙌🏻
What a great dog you have there. I love watching the relationship with you two. Best part of my day is after work playing fetch with my girl.
I have used the around command when on hikes or walks he always wants to go to other side of tree or pole look like a great work out
💪🏼💪🏼
Thanks man, Very motivating!
Thank you so much for sharing this great mental and physical exercise with us, Andy! I taught it to my boy this evening, starting with food and then a toy. Wow! The results were incredible 😃
Again, THANK YOU!
Greetings from South Africa
That’s awesome!! Thank YOU 🙏🏼
Thank you for this game “exercise “ will start tomorrow with Aussie. I love 💕 the way you could see the dog really thinking.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
@@AndyKrueger How do you train a German Shepherd to "drop it" (a ball) after he retrieves it and brings it to me?
He knows/does many commands I have taught him (including "come"/sit/down/stop/up/off), but he just will NOT drop the ball. The ball (or other soft toys) are all he cares about in life... he brings them to me wanting me to throw them all the time (I probably shouldn't do it when he is the one requesting ME to do what he wants). DROP is the one thing I can't get him to do. Thanks!
@@stratmatt7775 Use two identical balls. Teach the game of switch first, I have a video on my channel teaching this 👍🏻
@@AndyKrueger Thank you! :D
@@AndyKrueger Do you know the title of the video about doing the ball switch? I can't find it. Is it "FETCH IS DANGEROUS!!"? thanks!
Training the go around may be simple for you ! so thanks for explaining how it is done for the mire mortals out here viewing . Always great stuff on your channel , thanks .
Haha all good! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you for sharing. Nice video.
Thank you!! I'm going to try this with my Dutch Pupy
Awesome!
Hey that makes sense . Thank you ; will try on our young GSD.
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Gonna try this with my Aussie! He loves learning new commands
Great!
This is absolutely incredible ! I love your leadership and certainty with your dog training
Thank you 🙏🏼
My dog loves going around objects she learned it for agility.
Cool!
Not hard to teach and works like a charm. Marlo was going “around” without guidance in the second session! Thanks…I can do this with her in our small back yard or take a “walking stick” to the park. Love it!
Just what I was looking for! Something new to teach my dog to keep her sharp
Yes!
Andy ………..Excellent……..wish I’d have thought of this ……great stuff …….Best Regards from Dartmouth UK
Perfect of example of quality over quantity.
Yes!! 🙌🏻
My god that is so simple. Such a great idea! Great content as always!
Thank you 🙏🏼
Excelente, me encanto!!! Saludos desde Chile
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Awesome thank you! I have a 7 month female. She is awesome but a beast when bored! Your videos help😃
Thanks!
This is a great idea! WOW thank you I will be teaching my dog this.
Andy this is GREAT!!
I'm going to start this training tip tomorrow! No rain pls!
Charla and her 3 Mals!!
Great video. He looks like the Captain America Avengers quote, "I can do this all day!"😂
I would probably further mix it up by throwing the tug as well in between but this looks awesome for a dog/owner workout without it!! Love it 😊
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Watched this video about 20 mins ago my dog has nailed this already. Great vid ty ❤
Great tip! Thank you!!👏👏👏
I have a border collie and lab mic. She abselutely loves this. She fell asleep instantly after 10 minutes of this.
Thanks! How to teach around would be helpful!😬
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! 💪🏼🙏🏼
@@rmoran113 Nice work!! 💪🏼
This is awesome. Gonna try this with my gsd pup
Your farm is so inviting. What a great lifestyle for you, your dogs and family.
Thanks for the exercise. My Cane Corso is very active mentally and physically. We have solutions. Talking dog buttons and dog soccer, but this is great for variety. We'll try it today.❤
Awesome video. I was waiting to watch a video like this. Thank you brother.
I just teached my almost 2yo Border Collie the "around" command a he loves tug of war also!!! I can't wait to try it tomorrow, thank you for the tip 🎉🎉🎉
Just did this with my Pitt in a small garage space since it’s raining. Thx man! Excellent tip!
Love it!
My 30 lb. mini goldendoodle would run around that whole lawn about 10 times then come back to play tug. After that she has to determine everything that was on that property for the last few days. She will expect treats in between all the discovery. These dogs are so intelligent they become bored if not stimulated physically and mentally! Dogs are amazing!
Hi Andy, let's go...love your style and how you differentiate between levels so much that I have signed up with Patreon!!!
🙌🏻
I've watched many of your videos, and I train my 2 the same way. When i play with them and take them on their walks, I mentally challenge them every time.
Love this. First time seeing this guy.
Great exercise! I'll definitely try it with my gsd!!
Luv the 5 min Challenge plz keep it up Andy!
