I actually like driving, but no so much at night because there is not much to see. Daisy gets a little bit eager on the drive up, wondering where we are going to explore. On the way home, she just curls up into a ball and sleeps. She only wakes up if she hears me open up a bag (crinkle, crinkle), because it might be a treat. ;-)
Daisy has figured out when I am going somewhere fun, by what I pack in the truck or how I dress up. She actually barks at me to hurry up. On the other hand, if I get dressed for going into the office, she does not lift her head off the mat. When we are out and about, she tends to burn herself out exploring and needs to sleep it off when done. Dogs are funny creatures. She is like my shadow most times and pays attention to everything.
@@meMiner Dogs are such great companions! I'll be taking mine to the Oregon Coast in October, hoping to find some nice agates. We'll stay at a dog friendly house near the beach. Great that you have your own dog friendly place in tow!

Detecting is a great deal of fun, unless you are in an area strewn with junk. It can get frustrating digging junk after junk. On the other hand, if the spot has potential, then finding junk means nobody else has been there: virgin ground. I remember the old joke about where do they get virgin wool? Ugly sheep. Where are some of the best finds metal detecting? Ugly ground. LOL

Hard to believe these tailings were hit hard before I was there. It would have been interesting to have everybody pile up their finds. Some really good silver came out of there last weekend.

I wish I had the time this year, because I'd plan a trip to Ontario Canada maybe sometime next year when all the b.s. is over with at our house and yes I just can't leave my wife behind or be neutered when I got home. Hey, you are no more insane than the rest of us, up before the sun and off outside bleeping, hoping you find something. Daisy was the main star of the show, loved the scene where she stopped at the doggy snow cone bar, no hesitation for her order. A good day for you all I think. Great adventure, the thought police will know what you did though, its kind of wet there I think, either rain or snow. But you did all get a result in the end, well done.
Daisy loved finding snow. In another spot, she was walking forward and rubbing her head deep into a drift. She of course stopped as soon as I turned on the camera. Funny girl
Thanks for the feedback. I almost deleted that part of the video, as i wasn't sure anybody would find it as interesting as me. There was another part that I did delete for now and may include on a later video. The first discovery was at the south end of the lake and two weeks later the next big discovery was at the north end. Then they found some incredible veins and float on both sides and under the lake.
I like knowing some of the history to feel closer to the original prospectors whose ghosts are probably still walking around. It also helps to identify interesting spots and what to expect. For example, I didn't know the mill in this video was also a mine. I only learned that after reading about a murder and the body was dropped down a mine shaft. Oh, that reminds me. There is also the story of the Chinese Laundry in town. A family of 4 disappeared and never showed up anywhere. The food was half eaten on their table. Very strange.

Nice video meMiner - thanx for all your hard work! That insulator's color comes from good ol' Ohio red clay. Carlyle Tile Company used to mine red and yellow clay in my neck of the woods...(Ironton, Ohio)... and there used to be dozens of tile, brick, and insulator manufacturers in southeast Ohio. They mined iron ore, coal, and limestone here too... but not one speck of silver!
@@meMiner Yes - there's supposed to be a little gold in Ohio along a line where the glaciers of the last Ice Age ended... sort of diagonal across the state from about Cincinnati to Chillicothe... especially in Ross County. The glaciers carried the gold here from Canada, so say the geologists. I've never seen any Ohio gold or known anyone who found any... but the Ohio Geological Survey says it exists.
I was supposed to be there now, but life got in the way. Hopefully, soon. You can see in this video that I now have a comfortable place for Daisy and I to sleep if we drive to BC.

Good question! The original miners worked by hand and only hauled out the best stuff. There are places that you would think are barren because they have been detected by folks with good machines who know how to use them, but move some rocks or better yet move some junk and sometimes there are nice surprises waiting.

Cobre lake would be a wicked place for you to take a video . tailings piles and beut hiking trails ...waterfalls . glassy springfed water. Would make for a fun summer trip psbly ? And would helpdo the exploring for me hahah Rarely get a chance to get out to those places ..don't have wheels ..

That was a great video. I like how you edited it with lots of B-roll, especially the first part. Is there a good way to extract just the silver from the rock at home, without special equipment? I realize that the rocks may be more interesting as silver ore slabs, but have you ever worked it down to just pure silver?
I have not refined silver (yet). I know a couple of guys who have done it successfully. There is a somewhat complex process and need for some equipment. I was going to try last winter, but didn't get to it. It would be interesting to do with some of the marginal rocks.

I am playing with a few of the smaller rocks right now. I need to get out my (new) big saw for the larger ones. I hadn't heard about a new gold mine. If one opens, it should be good jobs for the area.

Well, they don't seem to be saying much about it, other than it's South of Devonport, we have one I believe NE of us... When you have to leave Daisy for a far away trip, how do you prepare her? I've been so worried about our old Collie, less than a week to go now & I'm exhausted! Every time we do something packing-related he seems to know & begins to get so stressed... 😕🐾✈✈💺😣
Usually, when I go somewhere without Daisy, she stays at home with my wife. We have only left her twice. The first time, Daisy stayed with my sister. She had a nice time because my brother in law loves to hike or jog and of course Daisy enjoyed that. Only thing is she refused to get into their car and would not leave their place that way. The second time, I left her at a place called Dogs at Camp, which is an open concept farm for dogs. She had a great time there with lots of new friends to play with and a big property to explore. I think I missed her more than she did me. ;-) I just use a diamond tile blade for porcelain. Nothing special about them other than I buy whatever is on sale.
@@meMiner Thank you! Our Collie is getting on a bit, he'll be 12 in July & his past is catching up with him. I'm hoping, because he'll be at home he won't be too stressed out - he tends to park his bum if he doesn't want to do something, and like Daisy won't be moved! He does like our friends who will be looking after him, but whether she'll get him to walk with her remains to be seen. We do worry about them, don't we & a month can be a long time? I wasn't sure if there was different grades of blades, but I s'pose they are really designed for one job? Very interesting and thanks for the support, it is appreciate as you are a very busy man. Mr MeMiner - I see a lot of your rocks contain calcite veins... Ever try etching the calcite away to see what lies underneath? You might find some nice silver dendrites. Try a vinegar bath for a week or so - hydrochloric acid might turn the silver black and dissolve other cool minerals like erythrite. Great videos!!!!
Man, I'd totally pay for breakfast, lunch and dinner to go up and hunt rocks and crystals with ya. I'm right down in southern Ontario, could even bring a grill, I've been known to cook a mean piece of meat over a flame!

Great Video and awesome specimens. I love the cobalt as the eurethrite has such a unique color. Do you ever worry about the arsenide content of the nickeline?
I should say that most, if not ALL rock in Cobalt and surrounding area has some form of arsenic in it. Definitely anything with other minerals in it. But if you break a random piece of rock, or hit it with a hammer, you can smell it.
I wish I had access to ore like that. It would be fun to play with some of it for some experiments. I recently got a nice size piece of rhodonite from the creek behind me or the last river I visited. It was this black hunk of rock and I knew something beautiful had to be inside. I cracked it open with a 3lbs hammer and large cold forged chisel. Once I saw that pink and brown dentritic formations I knew exactly what it was because of my books. I proved it was manganese dioxide by turning it into potassium permanganate through a series of reactions (thanks to nurdrage). There is of course a lot of iron contamination and it's not practical to gain this compound, however it's cool to me, so I'll be uploading a video processing that ore. I'm excited about it. The rock is beautiful, so I'd like to get the surfaces polished and preserve some of it as slices.

The closest place I know is north of Barrie for quartz crystals. It would be a bit of a hike on a bicycle. I have a video about it. Might be something closer, but I haven't looked.
@@meMiner Are maybe the vane of silver they were chasing, was really big and it wasn't worth smelting the smaller vanes because of all the other materials in the rock. I'm just guessing. I hope your having a great day.
You could be right. There was a vein nearby that they called "Silver Sidewalk". If you can believe it, before mining started it was sold for 250 dollars. The actual vein was 1.6' wide, 100 yards long and 200 yards deep. When you are on a spot like that, who cares about the waste pile?
@@meMiner aww shoot! Ya, I understand that now, that was the yellow brick road and little bits was nothing, that 80 pounder was nothing compared to tons and tons of pure silver.
Looks like I missed another good one lol dont worry though, I was further north and probably 3x colder lol soaked the entire 4 days, but it was a blast! I managed to get a few rock samples from an asbestos mine (Matachewan area) that are really strange. I'll make a video of them and post it. Idk what they are
@@meMiner after minimal research.. it is the Loyd Lake deposit www.mindat.org/loc-229448.html I have a crappy drone video of where we camped and it shows some of the pits and waste rock piles. Mostly fighting the wind and talking to the guys there about the drone though lol

I'd go back up for sure! Be a good place for the bike and ATV. It's pretty spread out. You can see most of it in my drone video, but itd be a lot of walking without the bikes. We could def do it in a day no problem though. I didnt collect nearly as much as I would have liked to lol (here I'm out of Cobalt rock hounding... uh oh! LOL) we will def look at it when you're up next
Your adventures are fun, and you really gotta like driving to get where you want to go. Not crazy at all.. Question... is there a rule or law that would stop you from traversing where you metal detect, from riding in on a quad or sxs ? i own a can am defender and think it would come in handy with those 80 lb rocks and gear.. maybe even camping equipment if you wanted to spend a night.

The next time you head up there you should bring along a little fellow with " bug Strength " to help carry those 80 lb boulders back to the truck , also metal detecting and prospecting is therapeutic for those of us " crazy " folk.
It was a tough hump. I had a backpack with about 50 lbs of rock, my tools, camera and detector and then the big rock. 1st part of the journey was uphill and then thru forest. Daisy was no help. So yeah, somebody else with hands would have been useful. The others were smart and bugged out when the heavy rain started. I waited until I was so cold and shaking that I couldn't hold the camera steady.
@@meMiner hypothermia is no fun and i can say this from experience , I now bring a zip lock bag containing a pair of dry socks and gloves , this way i can get warm if even for only a short time to fight off hypothermia . My worst case of hypothermia was back in the early 1970s , I spent 5 days and 4 nights lost in Algonquin Park.
@@meMiner I was 14 , if and when I slept it was up high in the tree tops . The bugs were bad and when I was found I had hundreds of bites , the sounds from the forest at night were both captivating and or terrifying.
The first miners sorted by hand and mistakes were made. Also, some of the spots had thick veins of really high grade, so they didn't care about the "smaller" stuff.

@@meMiner okay, just look at the old maps when California was an island and Lake Conibas was well above the Great Salt Lake... this was before 1811-12 when New Madrid Fault broke. You know why all that land in the west is state or national parks.... precious metals and jewels and lots of buried cities. Take Care!
I watched a recent episode of Joe Rogan on UA-cam and he had a really interesting interview about lost history in US down into South America. One method they are finding lost cities that nobody knew existed is LIDAR, especially in the Amazon. Crazy how our understanding of past civilizations is about to change dramatically.
@@meMiner yeah that LIDAR makes the ground naked! They really need to get down to business finding those cities and temples. Many are becoming back fill and road foundation.... It is sickening! Canada has some great lost and old stuff up there that nobody speaks of. When the secrets come out on who the true Native Americans were and of what really happened in the wars on American soil, people will never believe it. You know that OTTAWA is the True Capitol City of North America?
I also saw some interesting pics where they used one as a table lamp or herb planter. I am sure there are a few more ideas. The insulator cleaned up nice and I enjoy looking at it.

Silver does seem undervalued right now. I just like the look of it in the rock. Also, I love the hunt for it. For me, the market value is just a bonus.

Thanks for the feedback. I almost deleted that part of the video, as i wasn't sure anybody would find it as interesting as me. There was another part that I did delete for now and may include on a later video. The first discovery was at the south end of the lake and two weeks later the next big discovery was at the north end. Then they found some incredible veins and float on both sides and under the lake.

I like knowing some of the history to feel closer to the original prospectors whose ghosts are probably still walking around. It also helps to identify interesting spots and what to expect. For example, I didn't know the mill in this video was also a mine. I only learned that after reading about a murder and the body was dropped down a mine shaft. Oh, that reminds me. There is also the story of the Chinese Laundry in town. A family of 4 disappeared and never showed up anywhere. The food was half eaten on their table. Very strange.

Nice video meMiner - thanx for all your hard work! That insulator's color comes from good ol' Ohio red clay. Carlyle Tile Company used to mine red and yellow clay in my neck of the woods...(Ironton, Ohio)... and there used to be dozens of tile, brick, and insulator manufacturers in southeast Ohio. They mined iron ore, coal, and limestone here too... but not one speck of silver!
I am not sure about Ohio silver, but have heard that some of your creeks have placer gold.
@@meMiner Yes - there's supposed to be a little gold in Ohio along a line where the glaciers of the last Ice Age ended... sort of diagonal across the state from about Cincinnati to Chillicothe... especially in Ross County. The glaciers carried the gold here from Canada, so say the geologists. I've never seen any Ohio gold or known anyone who found any... but the Ohio Geological Survey says it exists.

Good question! The original miners worked by hand and only hauled out the best stuff.
There are places that you would think are barren because they have been detected by folks with good machines who know how to use them, but move some rocks or better yet move some junk and sometimes there are nice surprises waiting.
For some reason have always thought you lived in cobalt man lol ..

Wasn't able to find the " good " entrance to the mine . took the wrong path.....but there is a tunnel u could walk in a decent ways . . and unreal laketrout fishing in the lake itself !

Is there a good way to extract just the silver from the rock at home, without special equipment? I realize that the rocks may be more interesting as silver ore slabs, but have you ever worked it down to just pure silver?
I have not refined silver (yet). I know a couple of guys who have done it successfully. There is a somewhat complex process and need for some equipment. I was going to try last winter, but didn't get to it. It would be interesting to do with some of the marginal rocks.

I am playing with a few of the smaller rocks right now. I need to get out my (new) big saw for the larger ones. I hadn't heard about a new gold mine. If one opens, it should be good jobs for the area.

Usually, when I go somewhere without Daisy, she stays at home with my wife. We have only left her twice. The first time, Daisy stayed with my sister. She had a nice time because my brother in law loves to hike or jog and of course Daisy enjoyed that. Only thing is she refused to get into their car and would not leave their place that way. The second time, I left her at a place called Dogs at Camp, which is an open concept farm for dogs. She had a great time there with lots of new friends to play with and a big property to explore. I think I missed her more than she did me. ;-)
I just use a diamond tile blade for porcelain. Nothing special about them other than I buy whatever is on sale.
@@meMiner Thank you! Our Collie is getting on a bit, he'll be 12 in July & his past is catching up with him. I'm hoping, because he'll be at home he won't be too stressed out - he tends to park his bum if he doesn't want to do something, and like Daisy won't be moved! He does like our friends who will be looking after him, but whether she'll get him to walk with her remains to be seen. We do worry about them, don't we & a month can be a long time? I wasn't sure if there was different grades of blades, but I s'pose they are really designed for one job? Very interesting and thanks for the support, it is appreciate as you are a very busy man. Mr MeMiner - I see a lot of your rocks contain calcite veins... Ever try etching the calcite away to see what lies underneath? You might find some nice silver dendrites. Try a vinegar bath for a week or so - hydrochloric acid might turn the silver black and dissolve other cool minerals like erythrite.

A trip to Red Lake would be cool. I have seen some sample of gold from old tailings from there. Also, take your fishing rod.

Great Video and awesome specimens. I love the cobalt as the eurethrite has such a unique color. Do you ever worry about the arsenide content of the nickeline?
Any rock has the potential of causing harm if you eat it breath the dust (when cutting). A good idea to wash up and avoid breathing dry dust.
I should say that most, if not ALL rock in Cobalt and surrounding area has some form of arsenic in it. Definitely anything with other minerals in it. But if you break a random piece of rock, or hit it with a hammer, you can smell it.
I think I would turn the insulator upside down and use it as a three tier planter for strawberries 🍓. Or use it to display your treasures.

I wish I had access to ore like that. It would be fun to play with some of it for some experiments. I recently got a nice size piece of rhodonite from the creek behind me or the last river I visited. It was this black hunk of rock and I knew something beautiful had to be inside. I cracked it open with a 3lbs hammer and large cold forged chisel. Once I saw that pink and brown dentritic formations I knew exactly what it was because of my books.
I proved it was manganese dioxide by turning it into potassium permanganate through a series of reactions (thanks to nurdrage). There is of course a lot of iron contamination and it's not practical to gain this compound, however it's cool to me, so I'll be uploading a video processing that ore. I'm excited about it. The rock is beautiful, so I'd like to get the surfaces polished and preserve some of it as slices.

I haven't sent any to refiners. I did investigate it and learned they would like 1 ton or more to make it worthwhile.

The closest place I know is north of Barrie for quartz crystals. It would be a bit of a hike on a bicycle. I have a video about it. Might be something closer, but I haven't looked.

You could be right. There was a vein nearby that they called "Silver Sidewalk". If you can believe it, before mining started it was sold for 250 dollars. The actual vein was 1.6' wide, 100 yards long and 200 yards deep. When you are on a spot like that, who cares about the waste pile?

I managed to get a few rock samples from an asbestos mine (Matachewan area) that are really strange. I'll make a video of them and post it. Idk what they are

I have a crappy drone video of where we camped and it shows some of the pits and waste rock piles. Mostly fighting the wind and talking to the guys there about the drone though lol

I'd go back up for sure! Be a good place for the bike and ATV. It's pretty spread out. You can see most of it in my drone video, but itd be a lot of walking without the bikes. We could def do it in a day no problem though. I didnt collect nearly as much as I would have liked to lol (here I'm out of Cobalt rock hounding... uh oh! LOL) we will def look at it when you're up next

Question... is there a rule or law that would stop you from traversing where you metal detect, from riding in on a quad or sxs ? i own a can am defender and think it would come in handy with those 80 lb rocks and gear.. maybe even camping equipment if you wanted to spend a night.

The next time you head up there you should bring along a little fellow with " bug Strength " to help carry those 80 lb boulders back to the truck , also metal detecting and prospecting is therapeutic for those of us " crazy " folk.
It was a tough hump. I had a backpack with about 50 lbs of rock, my tools, camera and detector and then the big rock. 1st part of the journey was uphill and then thru forest. Daisy was no help. So yeah, somebody else with hands would have been useful. The others were smart and bugged out when the heavy rain started. I waited until I was so cold and shaking that I couldn't hold the camera steady.
@@meMiner hypothermia is no fun and i can say this from experience , I now bring a zip lock bag containing a pair of dry socks and gloves , this way i can get warm if even for only a short time to fight off hypothermia . My worst case of hypothermia was back in the early 1970s , I spent 5 days and 4 nights lost in Algonquin Park.

@@meMiner I was 14 , if and when I slept it was up high in the tree tops . The bugs were bad and when I was found I had hundreds of bites , the sounds from the forest at night were both captivating and or terrifying.

id say 50/50 mate, iv done the same to go find a spec of gold, its addictive that's for sure.
I love finding gold, but it is hard to compete with recovering kilos of silver. ;-)

The first miners sorted by hand and mistakes were made. Also, some of the spots had thick veins of really high grade, so they didn't care about the "smaller" stuff.

I watched a recent episode of Joe Rogan on UA-cam and he had a really interesting interview about lost history in US down into South America. One method they are finding lost cities that nobody knew existed is LIDAR, especially in the Amazon. Crazy how our understanding of past civilizations is about to change dramatically.
@@meMiner yeah that LIDAR makes the ground naked! They really need to get down to business finding those cities and temples. Many are becoming back fill and road foundation.... It is sickening! Canada has some great lost and old stuff up there that nobody speaks of. When the secrets come out on who the true Native Americans were and of what really happened in the wars on American soil, people will never believe it. You know that OTTAWA is the True Capitol City of North America?

I also saw some interesting pics where they used one as a table lamp or herb planter. I am sure there are a few more ideas. The insulator cleaned up nice and I enjoy looking at it.
