Great video. indeed helped me working on an Envinrude 90 trim up but not down issue.
It could also be one of the hydraulic valves sticking in your case.

I just got a 48 HP Johnson with a bad tilt trim on it. The owner had taken the bottom bolt out and was just lifting it up by hand. As a young farmer I used to unload 45 kg sacks of seed potatoes all day but now 67 I couldn't lift it high enough to put the tilt lock down. I went and got my tractor with a three point hitch boom pole and lifted it up. I did not even try to get the upper pin out. I just unscrewed the gland nut and left the piston rod on the motor. You sir are stronger than you look.

Gday mate i had a huge problem with my 50hp yamaha with the bottom attaching rod trying to get it out i snapped it it was that hard to remove so i know the pain of what you were doing makes a huge difference to your mental attitude when it all works like its supposed to .
Yes, they certainly can get very stuck, and they are also really expensive. I pressed one out once after applying plenty of heat and it still bent. A new one was over $100 from memory.

Yes thanks never had a problem with it. my mates got the New Evenrude that puts the fuel in the top as the pistons pass the ports that runs well . whats your pref the New two strokes or the four strokes.

I can't thank you enough for all the videos on outboards. I just acquired a 1984 starcraft islander with a johnson 150 outboard. It's been sitting for years so this set of videos has been tremendously helpful. I have a couple questions that I'm hoping you can advise me on. The riser has oil residue pretty much all over it. At the base of where the actual engine sits there is the same oil residue. Have you seen this before? If so what should I be inspecting? Wondering if it's coming from the oil pump. I haven't tried starting the engine yet so I'm not 100% sure where it's coming from.
Also I'm having an issue with the trim tilt also. No signs of leaks. It actually looks like it's in really good shape. The issue I'm having is simple. It doesn't raise the engine or lower it without me pulling it up or pushing it down. Going to check and see if maybe the bypass was left open by the previous owner tomorrow. This is not my first rodeo with hydraulics. It's acting like it either needs fluid, seals on the pistons are bad, or that the bypass is open. Like I said there are no leaks and everything looks really clean. It's actually much cleaner than the replacement you put on this outboard. If you can give me some advice on how to fill the tank it would be greatly appreciated. I assume it uses ATF because when I opened the fill it leaked out a red fluid. Are the rams a push pull? I assume that they are based on the motor running when I trim up or down.

I do however have a question.
My Evinrude 225’s tilt sticks when in the full up position.
I can let it down by releasing the pressure on the release valve then it goes down, but it mostly jerks violently till it gets to the trim pistons then works fine.
If I lift the engine without going to full up position it does not stick and sometimes will go down smoothly. I have tried filling the resevior varios times and still have the jerking problem intermittently.
Can you advise?

So once again i come back to Dangar Stu to gain some knowledge. First of all thank you for the awesome vids. I have a 2000 Johnson ocean pro 200hp and have an issue that when throttling in reverse the engine lifts. I cant for the life of me work out why. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

I'm replacing my trim motor on my 1999 Johnson 90HP (J90PLEEB). How did you replace the trim motor wires that go under the cowling? I can't find a picture or video of how to do that.
Hi Stu, The tilt trim on my 60hp merc is leaking from the top cover bad enough to replace the seals. Nasty project to remove. This style doesn't have spring clips but has dowel pins. Once you have the pins out you drive out the upper and lower large pins. Got the upper pins out and the lower keeper pin but the large lower pin is not budging yet. The book shows driving it out right to left but you have to go through an access hole and can't see what your hitting. Thinking to first drive it left to right just enough to get it broke loose then drive it out from the other side. I need to drill a center hole for a rivet punch to keep it centered when driving it. Need to remove my transducers for a clear swing on the right side too. Will hold the rivet punch with some large vise grips not to hit my hand. Going to heat the pin up at least on the left side where I can see it first. Wish me luck. Tim

That pin is froze up big time. My plan now is to remove drill easy out the 6 side 5/16" stainless bolts and take the bracket and tilt trim out to a bench. I may need to loosen the 2 lower mounting arms to get separation to get it out. Good thing is the side bolts are easy to drill for the easy out. Once on a bench just need to replace the cylinder seals and leave that nasty lower pin in and remount the assy.
Great video thanks for sharing. Can you tell me how do you remove the screw from the trim/tilt to drain and flush before refilling with new fluid for a Johnston 115? The lip of the screw is too shallow and the screwdriver keeps slipping off.
I would try an impact screwdriver.

Hi, so what do you do when the engine tilt works for a second or so and the the throttle works in forward and reverse? On the throttle by the steering?
That looked like a real work out lifting that motor, they must be close to 400 pounds. Lots of 150 175 225 Evinrudes around here and the odd older 300 v-8 they suck down the fuel like no tomorrow.
Yeah, I was lucky not to burst my foo-foo valve lifting that thing. I should have go the engine hoist out! They are a common motor which it was why it was nice to do this vid. The own of this boat isn't planning to keep it that long precisely because of the fuel bill.
Hey Stu. Thank you so much for doing all these videos. I don't think Ii would have been able to get my project back on the water with out at least a half dozen of them. (starting an old outboard, gear oil change, impeller service, no water from tell tale, electronic wiring, speedometer fix, steering cable replacement, throttle cable oiling, and a handful more)
This trim unit service is very helpful but I was hoping you could shed a little light on how the trim position sensors work? I have an older (1992) merc V200 outboard and i cant figure out where the sensor is located that sends the resistance to the gauge. The repair manual isn't being much help either. If you ever get something like that in the shop it would be great to see how to go about troubleshooting that. Or if you could show how to rebuild and tune a 3 carb set up, that's going to be my winter project!

Hi Patrick, glad the videos have been helping you. The trim tilt sending is positioned inside the mounting bracket for the outboard. There is a lever so as the outboard drops down it pushes against it. They are generally tested by checking the resistance as you move the lever through its full range. It is quite common for them to seize and the lever to break.

Great video, My tilt is working but the gauge isn't accurate. My gut feeling it the switch stuck. Is there any chance you can do a video showing where the switch lever is and how to unstuck it??

So my question regarding the very same trim unit. my manual release valve is fused, so is there any other way to bleed the unit without having that valve in the open position or am i looking at replacing the whole unit?
Not that I know of. How badly seized is it? Have you tried applying some heat?
Great info, I had just taken mine out as the relief valve was leaking, fixed that, however, now, it will raise, but will not lower even with baking out the relief valve.... SIGH.... lots of working just taking it out and getting back together.... Don't know what to look for to get it to lower.....
There is a valve that slides back and forth inside. When your problem happens it is usually because that valve has jammed.
I am guessing that is in the base of the unit?
I have maybe the opposite problem on my 1999 Evinrude 115.
I am removing the powerhead to check the rings due to compression problems and have already removed the wiring harness, vst, starter, etc . I was planning on using the manual release screw to push the engine into the up position but I cannot manually push it up. I heard a 'click' sound when I lowered it and now it seems to be locked in the full down position. Is there a locking mechanism for the full down position that I am not aware of? Not a professional but a DIY'er. Any advise?? Your videos are the best, thanks for what you do.

Use a prybar to push down the tilt cylinder then you pull the upper portion out of it's mounting location while lifting the unit straight up and out.

Hi Kevin. It is a screw valve on the side of the unit that you access through a hole in the mounting bracket. Just turn it counter clockwise and it will open the valve allowing the motor to come down.

Yep, fluid. Went to my local Evinrude dealer and asked for some TnT fluid, they didn't have any. They told me to use ATF and it worked a treat. Thanks for the help. Where you live is old stomping ground for a couple of friends of ours.
I have a frozen tilt,trim release screw and I need to trailer my boat home, how can I get the screw to release without pulling my motor completely off the boat?
If one Solenoid is defective. Will this stop both directions from working??? Only up solenoid clicks when activated. Thanks

Is it possible to replace the tilt seals without removing the entire trim tilt assembly? I already successfully replaced the trim seals, but I noticed now that the tilt seals around the tilt ram are also leaking. I have an Evinrude very similar to the one in this video. The trim/tilt assembly appears to be identical.
Yes, they can normally be replaced without removing the unit.
Hi..i have an evinrude e48eslcer 48 hp motor with manual trim n tilt. Seem the cable is broken. Top of the cable connects to release lever, bottom piece connects to something else, which looks broken. Could use your help

Yep, white vinegar is a good choice for cleaning out the water jackets.
First of all, apologies as I know this vid is quite old but looking for assistance nonetheless. I am about to install a remote trim switch on an Evinrude 110 (currently only has the trim/tilt on the throttle lever) to make hanging on the transom saver by myself much easier. The wiring is pretty self explanatory; blue wire for up, green for down and purple is power for the switch from the battery positive. My question is: Where is the proper/best location to splice the switch into the existing wiring? Or does it really matter and just do whatever is convenient?
**Edit** Disregard sir… Through watching a couple of your other videos, I’ve figured out how to hook it up to the terminals in the relay box… As it should be. Thanks again for the helpful content!

Usually just with the oil in a pump bottle or a squeezy bottle.

I have a Johnson 90hp 2 stroke rather similar if not identical to the Envirude one. Since you did a video on the tilt I wanted to ask you if you have experience or heard about a tilt that stayed stuck up when tilted all the way up. It happened to me a few times and I had to release it with the screw. Once slightly lower that the top, then the tilt works fine again... not sure if there is something to do... thanks again for the videos.
Sounds like it might be a valve sticking internally if opening the bypass lets it come down again. When you press the down button can you hear the electric motor trying to lower it?
Dangar Marine yes i do hear the motor trying to bring the engine down. When I pay attention and I am not lifting the engine to the top, then it works fine.
Hello - I really appreciate your videos -WELL DONE and very helpful. I'm trying to get my trim pump off the same engine. I'm struggling to get the trim and tilt rods out; they're frozen!! Did you apply heat to get yours unfrozen? I have a propane torch and am cycling through heating the rods - 5 minute heat application/hour to cool. So far, no change. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you!
Yes, that can get VERY stuck. Heat definitely helps along with penetrating oil. I'm not sure I would wait that long for it to cool though. Heat the outside to expand it and hammer out the pin while the outside is still very hot.

Update, which may be helpful to others: They still wouldn't budge after applying the above approach. But they did come out using a ball joint press (a simple tool that looks like a VERY heavy duty C-clamp) turned with a pneumatic impact wrench. I used a car size tool for the upper pin and a truck sized tool for the lower pin.

The switch panel I install in this video has an LED to say when it is in automatic mode and an LED to say when it has been manually turned on. When the float switch activates the "manual" light comes on to let you know it is pumping which sounds like exactly what you are after. ua-cam.com/video/m0jrZPY9o3s/v-deo.html

So I’m kinda new to boats and I went and bought one it has a 1991 Johnson 150 hp GT on it and when I took it out on water had the trim up just a little gave it gas the motor went down automatically and it wouldn’t let me trim back up to plane it out any suggestions I can try? Works good whenever I’m not full throttling it.
Sounds like the internal seals are leaking.

Hey Darren, yeah, that's a really handy tool that I do use a lot. I think I got it at an auto parts store. This is one pretty similar www.kincrome.com.au/o-ring-and-seal-pick
Even though the Trims all look the same there are two different manual release valves. One for the 3 cylinder and V4, and one for the V6. This valve also has the protection for hitting an under water object built in. The different engines are different weights and all require different valves. If you do buy another off a different size engine swap out the valve out of the original trim and you should be good to go.

I am installing my trim/tilt on a 2003 Evinrude 115hp how do you get the unit to fill and bleed when it was dry? Cant get to move just slightly
You need to open the bypass and lift it up. Pump, pour or squeeze fluid into the fill hole, close it. Then let the motor drop and lift it about five times. When it it up, open the cap, top it up then repeat the five lifts. Do this until it is primed and starts to work on the motor.
Any idea how much would be to fix a 1999 40 hp 4 stroke that is getting water in the oil the motor has 1400 hrs. Thanks in advance.

Hi Stu what does it mean when lowering the motor and the trim tilt makes an intermittent clicking noise and seems to strain
It is normally tightness and corrosion around the tilt tube (the hinge the outboard pivots on)

Johnson/Evinrude use two grub screws on each end of their cables to clamp the inner cable , not screw on ends as in the video. The basics are the same in terms of routing the cables and adjusting the outer cable position though . If you fit new cables send a message and I will send you the info for the first install of the cable. There is nothing hard in changing the cables , but those grub screws are fiddly.
