I have a question on replacing the manual pressure relief or manual tilt relief or manual tilt valve, whatever its called. I had to drill mine out to tilt the motor. To replace it, do I have to remove the trim and tilt motor, or can it be replaced with TnT motor in place? It looks like there is just a c clip (or banjo clip) holding it in place, as the head has complete disintegrated.
Very good video! I have a question, at 3:12 you leave the engine on the kickstand and use the hydraulics down to suck the rams back into the cylinders. How can I be sure those little kickstands will be able to not break under all that pressure? Do you have to have the rams all the way into the cylinders to perform this? Thank you in advance for a reply!

Great video. I made a tool for removing the caps by using a small piece of scrap steel plate and drilling four holes in the correct place. Then simply put bolts through that fit snugly in the holes in the cap. A central hole with a larger bolt facing the other way and double nuts on it, allowed me to get a spanner on to turn it. Worked great.

I ran a wire directly to the battery and no motor. Is it safe to say that the motor is frozen or still possibly the relay bad?
You can try wiring 2 or 3 12v batteries in series to create 24/36 volts and directly connect it to the motor, the temporary voltage shock can unfreeze the motor
Man this video was so helpful! Thank You! Mine is leaking between the transom and t/t. So I guess I'm going to have to pull the whole t/t off to get to the screw. Enjoyed the video.
Awesome, thank you! Ouch that doesn't sound good. Yeah, you'll have to pull the unit out and check it out. If it's leaking from the back like that, the unit might be cracked in the back :(
@@BornAgainBoating great video although that tool is really expensive, I wish you showed how to drill out the manual release if is seized, wont the fragments go inside? Since its aluminum wont heating it make it worse since aluminum expands the most of any metals? Can you use a screw extractor for it? do you have a video for that
Great vid, Quick question. On a 125 outboard force motor. Do you happen to know why my trim motor is making a loud noise once it's red positive line is simply touching my battery . Even before I have touched the trim toggle switch . It's making the same noice as if im touching the switch even when I am not touching the switch ? I'd greatly appreciate any feedback you can provide! Thank you so much for your help 😊
Sounds like one of the trim switches is leaking voltage, possibly the pan switch, unplug the switches one at a time and see if the motor turns off, it should be one of the switches. If not, unplug the the relays and it should stop, then work you way back to the switches from the relays, unplugging the trim wires until you figure out what's leaking voltage
Is there a point where if my trim won't go above 1/4 that a whole unit needs to be replaced? It's in the shop for diagnosis but im going is just bad seals and leaked too much fluid
Hey mate, iv got the issue with the screw broken at the relief valve. What exactly did you do? And what did you replace the screw with? I'm kinda scared to drill it out?
I need to find out I've got a Force 125 horsepower and it's a 1990 model and I cannot get that rod out that hose for tilton trim cylinders in that goes across from one side to the other how can I get them out they've been tucking out because I got to put the cylinder back in I bought the boat just like that and I rebuilt the cylinder so how can I put the rock get the rod out to put the cylinder back in so I can put it back together please comment me and let me know have a very blessed day and be safe 🙏
I have a pair of low hour 2008 df250's. I live in a remote part of scotland. I used your videos to help me maintain them. I had to replace the lower hinge pin and seals on one of the lower ptt rams. Now when I tilt that motor down from the fully up position, just before it transitions from the tilt ram to the trim rams, it bounces a few times. I have fully cycled the ptt unit dozens of times and topped up with ATF. Any clue as to what is wrong?
If you can’t get the screw loose , use a chisel with the correct size wrench or vise grips , if that doesn’t work use an impact driver or have somebody tap on the chisel while turning
If the pipes are known to rust up, why not get the coated/plated? I was taught if replacing one side of a system (the seal in this case) go ahead and replace the other side as it's failure is likely.... No anti-seize on threads?
I was thinking they used to come painted to be honest, I agree with you completely! You're right on changing out both of them too, but sometimes one side isn't as bad as another. Like if one of the rams gets a knick in it, then that is what is causing the failure. Not necessarily the age :) Good looking out! Not sure why I didn't put any grease on the threads. Usually, I do!
Yes, it will do a few other engines, but I don't think it will on the seastar steering cylinders. The seastar wrench works pretty well, you can hook a 3/8" ratchet to it for some leverage. Plus the caps come with the kit, so you can air hammer them off and not worry about destrying the caps :) There are a lot of different engines though, so they make a few different styles :)
Did all this . News seals on the tilt and and new pump motor along with new pump seals . New manual release valve . Everything is working great besides a slow leak down :( any suggestions?????? I’ve been bleeding the crap out of it . It’s supposed to be a self bleeding system
The only thing I can think of is that the check valves are worn out inside of the unit or one of the balls in the valve is just not closing. Sometimes you can take compressed air and using a nozzle with a rubber tip on it. Shoot air into the unit through the fill port and see if that will dislodge the valve that's allowing it to leak down. That's an internal issue and I don't think it is possible to get to those components. Well, I've never tried to take a unit all the way apart that far and see if you can replace the valve or clean it out. It might be possible, but you would have to take the unit all the way out and completely disassemble it. If you had a leaky seal and water got in the unit and rusted up the check valves that control that portion of the unit, then you would have to replace the ball or whatever it is that is in that check valve to stop it from leaking down. Sorry, that's the only thing I can think of. Let us know what you end up figuring out or doing. That can be frustrating when you trim the engine up and then it slowly leaks down while you are running or if you leave the boat in the water.
Good vid i was wondering though as there are many a vids on the trim cylinders but none for the larger main tilt cylinder on Yamaha i was wondering if u could do one on that when u can or when one arises cheers frm Australia
Cheers! You're totally right! I have some footage of doing a tilt ram, it's from awhile ago though and I haven't reviewed it to see if it's enough to make a video. I've been thinking about doing that though. These next few months are going to be a mixture of the new project boat and some other service and possible a tilt ram video. I'll look through it and maybe in the next couple weeks make it! Thank you for the suggestion :)
Hello, great video, was wondering I have a 70hp, well boat, can't seem to work the tilt/trim, won't go up because of the "well" do you think it would go up if I took the bottom unit off, cause I need to have the motor go 100% up.?
That's an interesting question. I don't have a lot of experience with well boats but I guess it all depends on how the boat is set up and how things are moving there. What do you mean take the bottom unit off? the well of the boat?
@@BornAgainBoating I'm speaking of the lower unit or can I raise the motor off of the boat and work on my tilt and with it hanging in the air.off do I need pressure from the motor to bleed it the tilt if the motor is suspended in the air..
I'm not 100% on the exact procedure for that exact model. Most of the little engine's under 40 the trim units only consist of a couple of pins and then slide right out. You should be able to pull it out, there is definitely a way to remove it, I'm sorry that I don't have the exact procedure for that exact model of engine, but you should be fine and when you look at it hopefully it is just a pin at the top and a pin at the bottom!
Yes, in some cases, the starter needs to be engaged for the trim to operate on certain boats. This is for safety reasons and ensures there's enough power available to operate the trim system.
Yes, the reservoir is for the whole unit. So any leak at any point in the unit will create an issue over time. If left for too long the unit will eventually fill up with water and start to fail internally and rust from the inside out!
Yes, make sure you have the cowling off to get you some more room. Then with the top pin out of the top of the middle tilt ram, pick up on the lower unit to tilt the engine forward into the boat. Hopefully there is enough room there with the engine pushed up to pull the middle ram down and then out of the unit. Be carefull not to pull the ram cylinder too far forward and mess up that pipe. Usually there is enough room in the transom well to have enough room to pull the cylinder out. I'll hopefully be making a video on this in a few months. Sorry I don't have it up yet :) Good luck!
I see ppl usually do only the trim rams but never the tilt ram. Does it not need seals replaces.? Im thinking about doing mine but no one has vids on the tilt ram.
The trim rams are just more commonly needed than the tilt tube seals. They do go bad though, and need replaced. I have the recordings to do a tilt ram but haven't gotten the time to make the video yet. It is pretty much the same as doing these trim rams with the exception of taking off the pin that attaches it to the engine. As well as having to pull the whole ram out and take the bottom or top, depending on what style you have, of the tilt tube to remove the cap. Then the seals are pretty much the same. A lot of them also have an o-ring in the middle.
@@BornAgainBoating ive always wondered how the seal on the tilt cap comes off. Unlike the trim trim rams which has nothing on the ends, the tilt ram has the mount that attaches to the motor at the top, if u slide up its stuck and if u slide it down it hits the base of the piston rod.
@@drakeastro8131 Yeah, you have to take the entire rod out and then stick it in a vice so you can screw the top off of it and then slide the cap off. The rest is the same, take out the pin in the top and then lift the engine up once you get the cap loose. Pull it out and unscrew the top off. You sound like you know what you are doing, you shouldn't have too much trouble!
@@BornAgainBoating ah, thats hiw its done. Honda Service manuals are hopeless. I miss working on my old merc and their manuals are alot clearer. Thanks, 👍
Be very careful with the piston, it has multiple springs and check balls inside. When the nut come of they go everywhere and unless you have service manual you have to guess which goes where and they are not identical, Ask how I know.
Great video, I have a problem with my outboard, when you put it into reverse trying to back it off the trailer the motor climbs out of the water. Do you have any suggestions, Thanks
Why do I see so many people having issues when powering the boat on or off a trailer! First of all a lot of boat ramps do not allow you to power on or off of your trailer, Secondly even if it was allowed it is a very disrespectful thing to do! The biggest problem is when idiots use the engines to power onto the trailer, It causes a big washout and then a sandbar behind it! Get your lazy butt off of the boat and crank it onto the trailer! And if you are too lazy to hand crank it just get an electric winch! There is absolutely no reason to wash out the boat ramp!
@@NeverEnoughPyro40 If you had read the post you would see I was trying to get it OFF the trailer, we had the truck into the water passed the muffler, the boat was not moving, also I am not a LASY BUTT and not a IDIOT. Thank you for your post it was very helpful.
If the tilt and trim works, and holds the motor up on land. But the motor drops down during acceleration in the water, and raises up in reverse. What would you say the issue is?
2000 Johnson 200 won’t trim up or down. No clicking noise when throttle switch is pressed or from switch on motor. Now motor stuck in down position. Any ideas ?

No, that was up in lower matecumbe in the keys. Could be though, we get a ton of people that come down from the west coast and spend time down here. It's quicker to come down by boat than car! Way more expensive, but quicker :) (Depending on the boat lol)
How to unstick a lower unit skeg on a older Yamaha 150 2 cycle motor. I can only pry it one half inch and it stays stuck. I assume my drive shaft spindles are rusted and stuck. I saw a video of a guy using wood shims but my narrow side of the skeg barely opens up to stick even a screw driver in . Since it is aluminum I gotta be careful when prying. Any Ideas? I saw a guy flip over his motor and put Gunk degreaser down the spline and let it sit for two days to get it to release.
my engine wont push down the trim rods, any idea why this is happening? it goes down with the manual valve and back up from bottom with the motor,. but it wont go down even if I stand on it
my merc 60 hp will randomly raise up and wont go down. The trim engine also seemed to be stuck and would not turn off till I disconnected at the relay switch. To fix immediate problem, I switched the blue and green wires to the relays to allow the motor go down so I could get back to the dock. Later, , I replaced the two relays-but the problem persists! Can you help me figure out what I am missing?

@@BornAgainBoating I'll try that.
You gotta drill it out and then use an extrator and then just put a new relief valve in :/
@BornAgainBoating hey mate, thanks for that will do it end of fishing season, I just used WD40 and a chisel to create new bed. Worked haha
Hi. How do you remove the lower pin on a trim motor on Evi rude 200? Been heating and beating but nothing.
Great video as always.
@@BornAgainBoating Ah, roger.
Where you get that tool you used with the impact ? Is it a store in the Monroe or Dade county areas I would like to get One.i know you said Motostop
You have to order them from Motostop or you can get marine tech tools as well
Will the Moto-Stop wrench that you used work on other trim and tilts than yamaha and sea star hydraulic steering?
Yes, it will do a few other engines, but I don't think it will on the seastar steering cylinders. The seastar wrench works pretty well, you can hook a 3/8" ratchet to it for some leverage. Plus the caps come with the kit, so you can air hammer them off and not worry about destrying the caps :) There are a lot of different engines though, so they make a few different styles :)
Curious to why you did not do the o-ring on the ram seal?
Didn't need it :)
@@BornAgainBoating Cheers Aaron
Hello, great video, was wondering I have a 70hp, well boat, can't seem to work the tilt/trim, won't go up because of the "well" do you think it would go up if I took the bottom unit off, cause I need to have the motor go 100% up.?
That's an interesting question. I don't have a lot of experience with well boats but I guess it all depends on how the boat is set up and how things are moving there. What do you mean take the bottom unit off? the well of the boat?
@@BornAgainBoating I'm speaking of the lower unit or can I raise the motor off of the boat and work on my tilt and
with it hanging in the air.off do I need pressure from the motor to bleed it the tilt if the motor is suspended in the air..
Can you just change the dust cover without taking out the caps? My 115 is not leaking but the dust caps are cracked and half missing...
You guys are the best .
Thank you
Good morning, have a 2003 tohatsu 30hp and need to replace the Power tilt &trim assembly..is there a way to remove unit
Hey brother, does the starter needs to be hooked up for the trim to go up and down?
Yes, in some cases, the starter needs to be engaged for the trim to operate on certain boats. This is for safety reasons and ensures there's enough power available to operate the trim system.
Question guys, the hydraulic fluid reservoir is the same for the upper piston so the leak affects all the trim system? Is that okay? Thanks!
Yes, the reservoir is for the whole unit. So any leak at any point in the unit will create an issue over time. If left for too long the unit will eventually fill up with water and start to fail internally and rust from the inside out!
@@BornAgainBoating many thanks !!
I am having trouble with the motor getting hot and shutting off. It looks like the fluid had a lot of air in it. We replaced the motor and ram seals.
Best video ever. Thanks!
Wow, thanks!
Can you do the middle rod seal without removing the whole bracket mount?2002 Yamaha f225. Thanks
@@BornAgainBoating thank you..love your channel !!
@@jrtonka19 No worries! Thank you!
Make sure it is full of fluid and then also make sure the manual release valve is operating properly
@@BornAgainBoating Thank you, I'll try that hopefully that takes care of the problem.
Is this bleed technique the same on single tilt and trim units? 96 mercury 90hp. I may have to replace the power pack on my unit
2000 Johnson 200 won’t trim up or down. No clicking noise when throttle switch is pressed or from switch on motor. Now motor stuck in down position. Any ideas ?
Fun to work on unless you have one like I did. Glad it's done that's for sure

Great tutorial, nice job!
Very nice job, clearly explained - thanks!
You are welcome!
just ANOTHER GREAT JOB ! ... What Else... ?
Are you in or near sarasota ? I thought i recognized one of the boats in the yard.
Thanks for sharing
my engine wont push down the trim rods, any idea why this is happening? it goes down with the manual valve and back up from bottom with the motor,. but it wont go down even if I stand on it
my merc 60 hp will randomly raise up and wont go down.
Could be the pan switch or the trim switch at the handle that has shorted
very nice and helpful video! cheers mate!
Glad it helped!
