Interesting concept. Trenton's idea for the neck pour especially.
The 'getting off the rails' portion was highly entertaining! Thought one, or both of you might be snorting a little bourbon before righting the ship. A whole different tasting experience! Lol
I use the Vinturi Red Wine Aerator for my bourbons. Picked one up on Amazon for $20...works like a charm.
I'd be interested in seeing a "butterscotchy" bourbon lineup reviewed on the show. Which ones are heavy butterscotch to you?
Yes! Agreed! Hard to find current whiskeys that have strong butterscotch notes
I get a ton of butterscotch on Midwinter nights dram. I believe I had act 10 but can’t remember for sure. Sad I drank through all mine right away 😂
I get mostly butterscotch on angels envy Rye
Yes !I second that ☝️
@@FIREBIRDMAN6285 I was gonna' say the same thing!
It seems that aeration isn`t just confined to wine. A great tip that I will definitely try with spirits. Thanks.
Would be really interesting to test the ABV before and after doing this. Ethanol really likes to evaporate into air given a chance, and this would probably speed up that process. I wonder if part of what makes these taste “better” is that you’ve reduced the alcohol content before drinking it, making is seem smoother and more flavorful.
First thing I thought of without even watching the video. They are likely cutting the alcohol content and that makes it "smooth" Oh well a video is a video.....
Finally someone said it
Cracking up at that thumbnail trenton you are a genius
Imagining Trenton using the frother on his eyebrows is hilarious. Another similar experiment might be use a wine aerator
I’m cracking up at the thought of Trent playing with that throffer and it cracks me up 😂. I’m laughing hysterically while ordering one on Amazon lol
Your results make sense to me, because some bottles I don't like until they're open a week or 2 (four roses small batch select and OF 1920) and some I really dislike after they get some air and thought the neck pour was the best pour (barrel dovetail and ardbeg uigeadail)
Agreed. 99% of the time i like bottles better after the oxidized/opened up, but some bottles the best sip/pour was the first one. Idk if that just so happened to be my palate was different that day (since sometimes we dont always taste things exactly the same whether it be what we ate before hand or just the mood we were in), or if the neck pour really was better. I think mostly higher proof whiskeys taste better off they open up since the neck pours generally seem to contain more ethanol
@jacksmith2315 that makes sense to me! Some times I will taste a new bottle several days in a row to see if the first taste was accurate or just my palate that day, and for some they definitely taste best to me in the first few days and then taste not great a few weeks after and vice versa. The last four roses small batch select I got took a few weeks to open up and I hated it the first few days i had it, while barrel dovetail I loved the first few days but 3 weeks after had to let friends finish the bottle because a reallyfunky fruit note became way more prominent. Smokey scotches tend to have the biggest change to me after being opened a while more so than bourbon or rye however.
You call your dad by his first name hahaha you're funny! Love the channel!
Hahahha i did this last night and it opened up lots of sweet taste of Makers Mark 46 french oak 🎉
Makes sense, like a shaken cocktail versus a stirred one. You could probably try this in a shaker without ice (dry shake) to achieve similar results if you don't have a frother.
You guys are fantastic, fun, and educational. Thanks so much for your work.
I’m with you Kurt, the best bourbons I’ve tried have a strong butterscotch note. The best example of this that I’ve tried was a 1971 OGD 86pf that I was fortunate to try in a Louisville bar. Absolutely incredible!
yes but Trent, some of are not that old and like butterscotch..... ha ha
Loved butterscotch lifesavers as a kid.
Now that I AM the old guy ... I guess I need to get some to keep around to "magically show up in random dishes" ...I didn't know that was a thing.
OR, you might do a show on the bourbon's that have a butterscotch aroma up front.
I have acquired bottles based on your sampling's.
My wife enjoys wine and uses an aerator that is placed on the bottleneck for that "fresh cracked bottle".
You guys have truly become a part of my whiskey, bourbon, rye journey and learning experience.
Great family, very entertaining.
So glad I stumbled onto your channel.
i would do a side by side of aerated with the frother vs same whiskey that sat in the glass for like 30min
Kurt loves Wild Turkey so much that his subconscious couldn't even let him deter from the original.
E&J xo brandy is a butterscotch bomb. It's relatively really cheap but tastes great. Make sure it's the xo.
We Love Brandy up here in Wisconsin...
Great idea Trent!
I've been on a butterscotch kick myself lately. Our friends at Buster's Liquors in Memphis, TN, have a great single barrel pick from Stranahan's. It's simply loaded with butterscotch! Fantastic!
I liked the lounge piano ring tone, it added a bit of class to your show and should be included in future episodes. :)
Very interesting. I guess some bourbons respond very nicely to a few drops of water, while others do not, so it is not surprising that there would be a difference in how they respond to a vigorous stirring. Just another reason to have some fun comparing how different bourbons or ryes react. Time for some research!
Love the idea! I think that in order to get a more accurate result, you’d have to set up the same bourbon more than once.
Hmmmmm. What a curious yet thought provoking video. The "science" of it makes sense and I might have to look into this myself........
You guys gotta try it with a rye. My wife did this to me with the high west double rye store pick and I found the two to be very different. Regular pour had a nice lingering rye finish and the other did not but the flavors did come to the forefront
Trentenism!!!I love it! That is a great description of some of what comes out of Trent's brain. Great video! Keep'em coming. TonyB
This looks like the same concept as the Venturi spirits aerator that was released ages ago. It was essentially the same as the wine aerator but had a stopper to measure a specific amount of liquor. You pushed the button and it aerated it as it filled the glass.
Old School SLB fun. 🎉
I have been trying this with all my bourbons now and so more than others have very distinct differences in smell and taste! To date the Woodford Reserve Double oak had a much more flavorful change than any of my other bourbons!! As good as the first sip was after frothing it for about 25 seconds it was smoother but the flavors exploded on the pallet from beginning to end.
That’s the first one I tried this hack with. Agree with your findings.
I wonder if a wine diffuser would accomplish the same!
I've used it and it softens it up..
I use one of those to froth the mix with egg whites in a Boston Sour before shaking with ice. Comes out smooth.
I use the frother to mix just about everything including mixing sugar in my iced tea. Now im gonna use it to aerate my whiskey 🥃. Thanks trent.
Great video. Interesting concept. I’m a home distiller and may do an experiment
With my next batch. Aerate one jar once a week and leave one still while they sit on the oak.
I was surprised you didn’t have one. I had a frother but to make a gin fizz! Froth the egg white.
I always wondered what it would taste like if i used my wine aerator on a pour. I may have to try next time. Extremely curious now.
Are the results of aerating proof dependent? You've got WT at 101 proof and BT at 90 proof. try it again with bourbons that are the same proof. Love the experiment. TonyB
This was fun. It's understandable the frothing would change the taste profile.
Another use for the frother I found, it can make small amounts of whip cream real easy... nice for that Irish coffee.
I apologize if you've done this, but I would love to see Trenton try FEW Straight Bourbon. The overwhelming note I get is NECCO wafer. It's awful but it's interesting to try. Love to hear how he would describe it.
I have been using a Venturi Areater for years.
I seen the tik tok too. And ordered one an tried it. I did it with wt101 and also picked the not frothed.
I use the frother all the time with my coffee to mix, its so much better than just stirring it
That was a video I had been waiting for and the results prove that it does do something to the flavors
The length of time between frothing and drinking may make a difference as well. Maybe if you try it again, froth immediately prior to tasting.
Cheers Lads. I feel the vibe to angle for a pro-blend that works for us all 😊Look after the sips & they will be a passion, ( World Peace costs 🙃) post Oct 7 plus Bardstown BiB is a great export😜
I'm so excited to try the frother tonight guys I already have one that I used to foam my vanilla creamer on top of my coffee.
Just shake the bottle vigorously then pour. Has the same result. It amplifies the flavors. Cheers!🥃
Interesting! I'd try it with a bottle I was replacing. One pour from a bottle that is almost gone and really opened up, a neck pour from the new bottle, and a neck pour with the frother treatment.
Thanks for another great video I really enjoy your videos
Well I just spit out my coffee laughing at the pijama thing
As others have mentioned, I agree with the neck pour idea. It looks like the WT101 bottle was a lower level and so had been opened previously. So may not have as big an effect. Plus, since Kurt likes the WT101 so much, it's possible any change to it is going to make it go down a bit for him. It would also be interesting to start from a neck pour and do a study on froth time, maybe start with 10 seconds and then 20, etc. Could make a difference. Also, like adding a little water to "open up" a whiskey (causing the molecules not to change, but to move around a bit), aeration may affect the various molecules differently. With water, some molecules are attracted to the water while others are repelled, and it leads to slight differences in aroma and taste. Aeration is stripping out some molecules (the lighter ones) and ever so slightly concentrating the heavier molecules (unless you run into an azeotrope, but that is for another day). I'll go out on a limb and say the molecule that account for the leather and oak flavor tends to stay in the mix and concentrates slightly.
Trent always catches Kurt off key when he least expected it 😂
Absolute howl on the PJ topic! Thanks for my LOL experience:)
It improves Blanton's flavors. I now want to re-sample my entire collection "Frothed"
I just tried this. I only have one glass in my hotel though. Cant wait to get home and try this again.
I always feel like I’m watching Randy Quaid and Jason Alexander.
Hey guys i just had a idea,You could use that little mixer for your neck pours !
Great video and I got a good laugh as I watched a few “brambles” roll by as pulled up to the job site this morning in Phoenix
Fun video thanks. A few weeks ago I was painting and when I finished I treated myself to a bourbon before cleaning up. Some dried drops of paint that were on me fell into my glass. I tried to fish them out with a spoon and then my fingers but no luck. As a last resort I grabbed a coffee filter and a funnel. The paint was out and the taste of the bourbon was lighter and smoother - I loved it. When I bought another bottle I filtered the whole bottle before drinikng and it was wonderful. I have since wondered if the filter has anything to do with it or it was the aeration that took place in the process. I have only tried it with one bottle, but this video validates my curiosity and opens me up to expereiment further. Thank Guys!
😂
A wine aerator would work as well.
Ok, I did the swirly thing with 101, and hell yeah it tastes better than not swirling. Will try BT and see if it's consistent. Cool vid men!
Great video...neck pour compassion would be fun
So entertaining. Very enjoyable
well, he doesn't break his stuff, only yours!
You should try that to one of the bottles that wasn't very good and see if it helps it out.
I’ve always wondered it one of those wine aerators would work on bourbon
In my experience there is no neck pour - I typically will invert the bottle a couple times before opening - it's all the same then....
I don't have one of those but I will be trying the blender
"What are you makin, honey?"
"A smoothie."
@@FakingANerve bourbon honey 🍯
one of the guys at work uses it on his coffee black, he says it enhances the bitterness... got me thinkin..... cool idea.
Great video.
That was great video. I was just wondering which was better
Another way to do this from the craft beer recipe development world: have Michelle pour 3 glasses, and the froth one or two. Then the boys see if they can tell which of the three is different than the others. This looks only to see if frothing makes a detectable change. If you repeated this in 2 more groups, doubt you'd consistently pick the outlier
For Kurt using Turkey 101 to warm up before shows, I would've thought he would've nailed it
Believe it or not this is what I do with my whisky before putting it in my coffee every morning
Way cool! Will try this on my next neck pour.
You guys had me laughing tonight! 😂
It’s was a good experiment I’ll try it
I'm going to try tonight with the same lineup wt101 and BT.
8:25 just proved me with the best laugh to start this crazy week, lol
Damn I feel the need to lift some weights now. Also I hope this will work with ECBP B523 to make it taste better.
I got one of these and will definitely try
Trenton, you are a unique character!
🤣
another fun thing you could do is 4 or 5 different glass shapes but all the same bourbon. It is wild how much the glass shape can change the nosing and flavor
Coming soon... the SLB Whiskey Frother™
Am i the only one who realized kurt didn't know trent was talking about snorting smarties lol
And after this video, Trent was never seen again 😂😂😂 Also, I’ve heard you can get a good nose on it if you have it come out your nose from laughing so hard
13:25 I love this moment 😍
LOL very interesting. I'm going to try this tonight.
Can confirm with a different alcohol: Tequila. I just tried this, and found it can make a mediocre tequila taste good, and a good tequila taste great! I reduced the spin time to 15 seconds (more did not help, I found). Fresh, wonderful tasting notes came forward, like chocolate, caramel, and leather, while sharp peppery notes decreased. Interesting!!
I'm wondering if shaking a bottle before pouring it made a difference.I'm thinking it would.
I’ve done this with mezcal. Seems like mezcal NEEDS the aeration. Haven’t done this with bourbon … yet.
Im excited to try the New Garrison Brothers Laguna Madre Texas Straight Bourbon on August 15th and ill get the chance to buy 2 bottles and they are not going to stores. Retail cost is $299 and if i can swing it, ill send you a bottle:)
Why not aerate whiskey like wine using a decanter?
They sell aerators for wine too. They are supposed to really make a difference.
Cool idea for video. I’m just a noser, swirl and sip myself but might be worth a try.
I am enjoying the video - but $90 is probably a no - too pricey with all the choice south of $90 - thanks for sharing
I wonder if the frothed bourbon was lower in alcohol because it was evaporated by being aerated and the others being just static in the glass.
Agreed. Kinda like vaporizing gasoline to run an engine. Putting a lot of air into the gasoline so it runs off the vapors instead of being injected directly into the engine
Is that possible? I didn’t know that would happen. I’m curious if that happens.
@@jacksmith2315 Yup, carburetor emulsion tubes. Alcohol evaporates even faster than gasoline too. The bourbon may be a little less "hot".
Leading the witness! lol
I’ve used wine aerators before and noticed a difference. I wonder if the frother is actually evaporating more ethanol than actually aerating
Took out an eye brow!! 😂😂😂 Why Trenton, why would you try that 🤣🤣🤣
