• We made the WORLDS SMA...
For round 2 with David, we decided to make ANOTHER drum set out of complete JUNK and then attempt to record a song with it. This one was a lot of fun. Disclaimer: In total, we had 6 hours to do this entire video before I had to jump in a car to catch a flight back home. We both wished we would have had a longer time to sit with the "drum set", learn its sounds, and come up with parts for the song. But, we also wanted to finish the video so you all could see. Sometimes that's how it goes.

But my cymbals are bad lol
2nd replie on this comment let’s go!
Ha! Jokes on you, I have no drumset 💀
But I subbed though... 💁🏾♂️
No! You subscribe to _ME_ or I'll steal your saw blades! 😝
PS: at least David is only taking the felts. Behave or you won't be invited again !
Club: Yeah we have a house kit, just bring your cymbals.
The House Kit at the Club:
David: Don't worry, I've got drums here. No need to bring anything.
Me every time falling for it:
Lol rdavidr trying to blend in...
Oh yeah. "Backline provided" by a person that is not a drummer. 5'8" Me at a gig in San Francisco in 1986 trying to play a guy's gear that was 6' tall!
I wouldn't be pissed if I had to play it though it sounds pretty cool.
When that would happen I would just show up with my set and lend it to every band sharing the stage.
i'm impressed by that kick and snare, they sound phenomenal
P certain the snare is a sample
You can hear in on its own with the floor bucket build up and it sound comparable to the nail plate hats.
Sounds better than 1 would expect though
So does the cymbal
i was about to comment that lol, what a clean crisp from it.
As someone who is addicted to cymbal choking, I'd be dead within the first hour of sitting behind this kit.
Why does the paint bucket lid sound better than my 300$ snare...
How the hell does that “snare”sound like that!??
It sounded surprisingly good. We had to deal with the harsh attack but the snarey sound was great
I was about to say, if sounded amazing
@@StephenTaylorDrums I am having a really hard time believing it’s the actual pure bucket lid snare sound. In the beginning, the ghost notes were much more of the actual sound, (and the snare was repositioned) and it almost sounds like you are triggering another sound at higher volume with a gated side chain. I still think the original sound is in there, just very faintly. (Or possibly, it’s the actual sound, but split off into two channels, and you are still doing side chain shenanigans, which opens up a very compressed (pretty much limited) version of itself above a certain threshold).
Please do a follow up on that snare sound. I’m about 3 nanoseconds away from calling B.S.
I believe that the snare sound sounds like that ofc, but it just really surprises me. It sounds amazing for how it was made. I’m not doubting it
The combined cost of all this "junk" and drum gadgets to put it all together probably still costs more than my Tama drum kit
I'm afraid of that ride casually chopping my arm off.
Why does this sound like an ad for Home Depot?
Oh that's a challenge right there! You can use your own stands but you have a 100-200$ budget at a home store to get the parts for a set. Then same challenge at a thrift store.
Still better sound than Lars Ulrich drum set on St. Anger
That snare sound...
😅😅😅😅
Just dont be rude...the guy is a millionaire!
Tbh i friking love the st. Anger snare
@@Direitistaconservador So basically ...be rude to poor people?
The K logo on the left cymbal was a nice touch.
That lid and metal pin setup makes that gnarliest snare sound. I might actually do that now just for that.. its crazy
Yea...only thing is the attack. Just harsh. We didn't really have enough time to tamper with it but it still came out great I think.
@@StephenTaylorDrums I think having that as an addition to a snare for a little mix up could be cool for a few song, definitely better then i was expecting looking at it.
it'd be great triggered and mixed under a big 14x8 for some extra snap. it's almost like playing bottom head with the stick.
Those drums remind me of a german industrial/experimental band called Einstürzende Neubauten.
That lid snare sounds insanely good. Like better than a lot of real snares.
You guys should definitely sell these sounds as samples!!! I know a few people that would forsure buy that snare sound
would love to have heard the snare isolated
I could listen to that track for days. Its so awesome. Love your work
Looks like a ton of fun especially with another awesome drummer to join in. It inspires me to experiment with all the sawblades, and car rotors I have lying around. Cheers Stephen and David. Awesome
Kooky. I never used Moms pots and pans but instead used the sofa in our living room because sitting facing it felt like a real big drum set. Playing KISS Love Gun and a big cloud of couch dust gently wafting through the air! This was a fun video guys. Now its off to my garage to see what undiscovered percussive delights await.
Hey, Stephen, David, you guys gave me a great idea. I love the sound of the 3 aluminum baseball bats and I may add them to my not so junk Custom DW Kit. Oh, by the way love the sound of that snare jut like some of the other comments, pretty darn cool...
Yea, those bats were worth exploring for sure. I wish we would have had more time to experiment. But, you know, the airport was being difficult about holding the plane and all.....
I'm totally blown away by the sound of that kick and that snare. Sounds amazing!
the hats kick snare combo is mental! so good
I’m sold. Blooming awesome. Great work boys!!
The dopest part about this is that Roy threw down on the tracks. I can hear the mutemath influence in it, badass!!!
For a "percussion" setup, it sounds really really good! The kick and the snare sound friggin amazing!
Super creative idea and great sounds, and awesome massive studio production!!
best productive use of old junk! Respect!
The 'K' taped onto the hi hat is the best part honestly.
Woah, plz send it to me 😄 If I didn’t see the video and heard only the audio I wouldn’t know that it was built from the scrap material, well done !
We were def happy with the sounds we got
AWESOME IDEA! I really liked the creativity and musicality of this video.
That ride sounds as dangerous as it looks 😬😁 Love it! Whole kit is truly a masterpiece! 💪
Love the alternate snare sound.
Love IT !!! This is awesome !
Snare sound was awesome; really cool by video and amazing playing
That actually sounds good! Nice work!
It's amazing what you can come up with, using items that you have laying around. I also heard a bit of a Rush influence at the start of this video. Cheers! ✌️🥁
You should call these videos "geeking with drummers". You make me wanna geek with drummers. :))
Great pair of videos, ty Stephen and David !
I love this! Makes me think of the band on "Fat Albert" back in the day
Awseome video Stephen. This video sounds like you used an E-kit if you listen to the audio only. Just shows the versatility of an e-kit with all the sound samples. Also it would be sweet to sample this kit in put in my Alesis kit module.
That sounds awesome! 🤘👏
That snare is insane. Good finds. This was cool.
Good drummers know the different sounds something can make and make the sounds musical. One big tell is how well they use cymbals, for there is so many different musical sounds from just one cymbal.
You know it's a drummer's yard when the brake drum has an AAX logo and the saw blade a K logo on it 😂
Excellent work from both of you.
Thanks Brian!
Living proof that tone is:
A. On the hands
B. On the mics
C. On the mixing
D. In David's gravitational pull
I can't believe Stephen is beating his junk on camera 😳
I apologise, I'm sorry, it was too easy, i am ashamed.
5:14 Wow what a feaky hi-hat sound ! very cool !
Hey Stephen .. I just found this clip and wow that finished & produced “sound” of the junk drum set up, sounds just like the kind of 80’s production sound that Genesis or Peter Gabriel would have come up with on a track... very cool stuff 🥁👍🏼🙂
This was awesome.👌🔥
That sounds crazy good! Nice job
Thanks Dan!
This was sick. Loved it! 🔥
Awesome! I'd love to see Glenn Kotche get his hands on a kit like this.
Looks like you guys had a lot of fun. that’s awesome!!!!!
Now that is creativity. It reminds me of seeing a street musician playing a upside-down bucket and he was absolutely amazing at it. Totally love it thumbs up
Thanks tim!
That snare made out of the "stick your face in this collection of metal pins" thing is fucking brilliant and I wish I thought of it myself
Genius! Not just clever, but great musical ideas were expressed!
Thanks Archie!
You guys are amazing so so cool !!
Very interesting and informative. Great ideas.
1930's drumsets be like:
Nice work boys, industrial
Wow !!!! I want that ' drum kit" ahahaha
Guys it's amazing.. great sound !!!
put the spinner cymbal sleeve on the bladesaw, should be fun
Lol, we actually talked about how we should have done that
@@StephenTaylorDrums that's great!
That snare sound is legit!
Very cool. When I was 11 I made a tin can drumset had a premier snare drum use a practice pad drum shaped JCPenny crash tambourine for HH didn’t know how to make a bass drum uses tal boxes as stands. 11 pieces total. Thanks for sharing.
Nuts and fun! Thanks!!
This week on horders.... I'm telling you it can be a drum!!!!
That was so rad!
Nice one guys... That snare sounded like an 80's electro drum machine... Great stuff...
Next step, Hollywood sound tracks...
Stay Safe 😷
Stay Sane 😀
rdavidr great playing!
Love mutemath and roy. Probably some of my favorite music ever
This snare sound really good!! Amazing! Jaja
Good stuff 👏
Thats the dopest ride ive ever seen🥴😂🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is sick!
Sounds very good!
Dude, this is f****** awesome! Sound Lives In Everything, and I am constantly tapping on any service I can reach to make noise from it. My first drum kit was a cooler for a kick drum with bucket toms set on top and a symbol made from a coffee can full of nails suspended from the ceiling.
Hey I’m 13 been playing about a year my setup is 3 buckets
(2 mounted toms, 1 floor Tom) my snare is a practice pad. my feet are my bass drums, backpacks (cymbals) , and then vater H-220 and Vic firth 5B. I am getting a drumset for Christmas though can’t wait. What is the hardest song you have ever learned for me it would have to be dance of eternity or la villa strangiato.
hell yeah using truss gusset plates as the hi hats!
Reminds me of Rudi Mosers drumset with Einstürzende Neubauten.
SWEET! That was pretty legit
that "hi hat" and "snare" are incredble
Honestly the "kick" and "snare" sounded shockingly good lol
You guys are awesomely insane 😂.. Totally fun
I love this! Reminds me of my first drum set! Lol!
Nice ..nice...✔✔👍👍👍😁🎶🎵🔥. Love it guys...!!!
My mind is literally blown. So good
STOMP would be proud haha
We legit had an old brake drum in my high school concert band that got used an odd amount. I don't recall what for, but I'm pretty sure there' isn't sheet music for brake drum, so our instructor got creative with it.
I liked that recording in the end. Where can I find it? BTW the way that sounds like an electronic drumset but acoustic like damn.
Fantastic!
Hello, Stephen. Now that is what *I* call drumming on a budget Thanks for sharing.
Glsd you dug it!
sounds industrial!
You produce great results from junk!!!!!!Amazing !! I wanna see the face of Roy when he listen to this..!!
Oh wwwwwaaaaaaaaw we are in a same boat! I guess i got more idea now. Thank you!
That is dope.....my ears can't deal with a he bats but everything else is dope
Oh, what memories...!!! That's how I started to play actually, when I was a boy, with trash cans, paint cans, and old (and broken) wooden chair.... before I could afford my first real drum kit. Mine wasn't as complet as this one, though, and definitely, it didn't sound half as good... 😂
I honestly think this sounds better than if you had used a traditional drum kit. This forced you outside of your box. The melodic parts of this trash kit really work well with this track too! Love it!
Just proves you can make drums out of virtually anything
PLEASE play a tool song on these tools, or a Junkyard drive song on this junk ;D
the AAX brake drum ride, nice.
very rare sabian prototype 😉
Oh the power of audio editing
This is a great metal video 😈😈😩✊🏽💯💯
