I have been a fan of Travis Barker's drumming for as long as I can remember. To me, he really helped change the game of pop punk rock drumming . His band projects include work with The Aquabats, Blink 182, +44, Boxcar Racer, Antemasque, Goldfinger, and the Transplants...not to mention his collaborations with other artists. He's launched a successful clothing company (Famous Stars and Straps), has had popular TV shows, and has helped to bring more attention to the drum community. So if you're looking to make a Blink 182 type beat, a pop punk type beat, check out my fellow Zildjian artist, Travis Barker.
So here are 5 Travis Barker drum beats that I think every drummer should know.

One trick to ease the fast beats is to move the hihat up a bit so you right hand doesn't get in the way of the left hand. It also help with having a bit more room to lay into the beats.

Fantastic lesson, Stephen! Always a blast dissecting Travis' grooves. Was thinking of doing a similar lesson! Glad you picked the parts you did. I remember it taking YEARS to comfortably play the First Date bridge, haha! There was one drummer in our drummer-friendship-group growing up who could play it, we were hella' envious. Sounds so simple, but tricky to pull off!

the problem is that people don't understand that he should not be compared to the Buddy Riches of this society. He is not THAT technical. He should be judged on being extremely creative and adding value to simple punk rock songs without overdoing things. Another favorite drummer of mine is Ryan Torf of The Story So Far, bit more technical, but still so flavorfully creative.

Travis Barker has some really cool but challenging stuff to play ... Adam's Song took me quiet a while to get right..,,,, well in my defense it was before UA-cam and guys like yourself showing us what to do ...and all i had was a little tape deck that i was listening through ..ah the good ole dayz....

I quit when I was about 22. And then there was a gap for 34 years and then I started to play in a band last year and that was really fun! I bought an old Pearl Export drumset and now I play everyday. Hey Stephen - Ok this is going to be weird, but please bear with me.. Have you listened to any of the drum work from the band Pierce the Veil? I find myself gravitating towards the type of style and the energy Mike Fuentes plays with. What are your thoughts, if you have listened to it at all?

When he said feeling this is though he was gonna talk about the cowbell beat. Is a good beat yo start playing Travis stuff and it's catchy af

Thanks for the video, definitely agree with you on playing first date live. With my last band we had so much fun with this song and even the people here in Germany recognize this song when they hear it. But yeah, a little tricky for sure, especially because of the tempo ( actually our bassist had more timing problems during the bridge ;) l

I learned all these beads by ear growing up, but it’s awesome to finally see them broken down. 208 on anthem part two though? Does the song speed up or is that the BPM for the whole track it sounds a little first

I realize this isn’t a new video. But one Blink song I love, that has Barker playing some killer grooves, is Heart’s All Gone. From the Neighbourhoods album.

Have you done a breakdown explanation of the standard fast punk beat??
I’m a drummer who plays guitar in bands now, I can never get a drummer to play that beat right.

Awesome video Sir. Another song that comes to mind is Mutt. There’s one groove I could never figure out, in Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt by The Mars Volta. Jon Theodore. My brain just can’t wrap my head around it.

in "anthem part 2" groove there's a 8th notes played by the left foot all the time (noticed that on one of the concert videos). And also the open hi-hat right after the snare he plays wit the left hand.

You should do the song “The end with you” by Box Car Racer, the part where he does that intense drum brake and all those serious high hat rolls they’re like 32 notes rolls it’s insane I’d love to see that

He definitely is one of the grooviest rock drummers out there. I'm just not sure a teacher would be able to to his chops justice. His stuff is super simple and even the noobest players would be able to learn by listen. What is hard to emulate is his slouchy but hard hitting feel.
