    I have the Cloud-up 2 and think that is a great tent. But after my last 10 days of backpacking through the Alps, I found that tents with a side entrance are more practical. Easier to get in, easier to get your stuff in, and when it rains you don't have that very sloped entrance door to get through (so you get wet).
    So I was already looking at this Star River one for a while and your review is certainly helpful. And though it's 300 grams heavier than the Cloud-up 2 (and I was actually looking for a lighter tent), I think I will be buying this model for 3 seasons and maybe the VIK as well for warmer regions.

    I have the 2021 model. It is a true 2 person tent but it really does suffer from condensation as it only has one vent. This can be relieved a bit by really pulling out the ends to get a bit more airflow.
    It can be pitched fly first using the footprint but it is a faff. Also, in my opinion at +2kg it is too heavy. It is a big agnes clone but 600gm heavier.
    The advantages are the width and head height are excellent. It is well made and well stitched. Unlike the mongar it isn't all mesh. The star river's side walls have solid panels which are great in colder windier months.
    We took it on a 5 day hike in France. It did well apart from the weight and condensation.

      It weights more because they take the floor saver weight into consideration also so don't be fooled a d that weight is not heavy at all I don't get this it's too heavy thing

      @@SAMMIEJONESJUNIORyeah, I would like to see the true weight of each like for like I doubt there would be much in it, I seen one with the cloud up vs one similar 4 times the price and there was about 80 grams difference.

    Just walked my fIrst long distance 150km hike with this tent and I was super happy…haven’t tried it in windy conditions but I. wet ones yes and it hold throughout the whole night of heavy raining. I can only recommend too had no issues at all and looking forward to more hikes with it. But I’ve just realised I’ve been pitching wrong the whole time 😄 never did the liner on the mat first but in actual tent 🤷‍♀️ it worked well though 😅

    I wished they'd offer a Star River 1 for 1 person bikepacking. This tent seems way overkill for 1 person, whereas the Cloud Up 2 really is a 1 person tent with some bags and gear. And it needs to be also additionally available in olive/forest green for stealth camping.

    The main reason these are overlooked for the cloud peak is that they pitch inner first. I had a mongar that is practically the same as the star river and returned it. It was a nice spacious tent but when going out with friends in their vango / hilleberg tents they were set up, unpacked and making a brew whilst I was still messing around with the tent. The cloud peak ground sheet, inner and outer can be left all connected. Chuck it on the ground, put the 3 poles across and clip it on, job done. I really do like the look of the star river but I know which one I’d rather set up / pack away in wind and rain : )

    I bought the cloud up 2 but I’m not so fond of the walls that cave in. Really like the headroom in this, the fact that it has another door, and another vestibule. The extra weight/packing size on the SR2 is worth it I think?

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  2 роки тому +1

      Once you've had a twin-door tent it's quite hard to go back. My favourite tents tend to be free-standing dome tents because they are good in the wind and rain with less flapping and general noise. Personally, I think it's worth the extra weight but weight doesn't bother me too much. If I was going on long multi-day trips I'd go for the lighter option.

      Most tent brands measure their tents from the very edges. If the fabric comes into the tent sharply often the real size of the tent is smaller (sometimes much smaller!). It also depends on how well the tent is pitched too. Unfortunately I don't really want to measure the tents myself as I don't want any comeback.

    does it get warmer in the star river 2 in comparison with the 20D cloud up 2 in cold weather conditions?

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  Рік тому +2

      I’d say the Cloud Up 2 would be warmer. It’s got less internal space, has a low fly and lots of solid mesh.

    • @BackpackingUK

      Yes, I think Naturehike have definitely borrowed the design. Definitely not half the quality though. Similar story with Naturehike's Mongar 2 and the MSR Hubba Hubba NX 2.

    nice review, liked and sub .. oh wait, i already subscribed 😀
    two questions: what's the upgraded part? what changed, compared to the version before, do you know? And second, what about ventilation and condensation issues? I've heard others reporting some problems in that area, especially compared to the Mongar 2. I'm still unsure which one to buy, but so far i'm leaning to the Mongar 2, 15D version ...
    Again, thanks, greetings from Germany

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  2 роки тому

      The Mongar 2 has more ventilation / mesh therefore less condensation. However, the Mongar 2 can get very cold so I tend to call it a summer tent. Great design though, it's based on the MSR Hubba Hubba NX2.

      The main difference for me is the entrances. Personally, I like side entrances and having two is even better, so the Star River 2 is the winner for me. However, the Cloud Up 2 is lighter and better in poor conditions. Both are great tents though!

      Don’t understand why so many people have this hate for inner pitch first tents. Been a regular camper since early 1980s and can count on one hand the times I had no choice but to pitch in the rain. Too much is made of it. Besides that, the Star River - as with most inner pitch first tents - CAN be pitched outer first.
