I’ve visited the prison, and it was nothing short of amazing. There was a former prisoner there signing his newly published works. The wind around the island was terribly strong, but I could’ve stayed there for hours. I love visiting historical sites! There’s so much to learn from them all!

Man, this place is so interesting. I grew up in San Francisco, so I ended up doing a project about it in fourth grade. That summer, I visited the island with some relatives and started talking to one of the guides. He was so impressed with what I knew, that he invited me and my relatives to see the dungeon, which is normally off-limits to tourists. I'll never forget how creepy the place was.

When I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, I took may out of town guests to Alcatraz. It was a scary place. I took my hubby on the evening trip there. It must have been tough for the prisoners because they were so close to San Fran that they could hear the people partying on New Years Eve. The evening trip is even scarier then the day trip. If you are even in the Bay Area, I recommend a trip there. And it's haunted :)
Why do they let them smoke? Isn't it possible to get rid of their addiction if they physically can't smoke for years?
It was a different time. Many people did not know the long lasting health affects of smoking back then.
this was in the 20's-40's back then smoking wa susually done from a cigar or similar and was considered if anything, healthy.
Everyone knew that smoking was bad , the reason they allowed them to smoke was because they could get desperate and aggressive without smoking.

i’ve been to Alcatraz a few times as i live near san Francisco and i can say that it is very interesting. it’s not scary at all, but the audio tour has a few things in it that might scare younger children.
overall, it was great for pictures as it overlooked san francisco!

I've been, it's like your average prison but on an island, this is probably why it's so hard to escape, but props to those who did and possibly succeed, imagine swimming that distance or the amount of preparation and planning for the boat escape

I went to Alcatraz when I was in San Fran. Really cool place with a lot of history. That island had many purposes before it was a prison. Look it up if you're bored.
You forgot to Mention Weasel, Finn, Al and Billy who escaped from Alcatraz with a Plane but crushed into the Golden Gate Bridge just to find out that on the Bridge there is Pack-A-Punch.

I've been to Alcatraz before. It was pretty cool and we learned all this stuff at the tour.
Nice video, but many interesting facts were left out. For instance, did you know that Alcatraz was the first and only United States prison at the time to have hot water in the showers? Something that American prisoners everywhere else in the country did not have... also, there is a small crematorium in Alcatraz for prisoners who had died during their stay. There are many more things to go over but it would take a whole novel haha. It’s an amazing place to see and it’s history has a little bit of everything from criminals to the military, and even to Native Americans!

I was imprisoned in Canada for a week. As short of a time that was It changed me forever, and I have constant nightmares of being back and not being able to ever leave.

I've been to Alcatraz. The big reason you went to "The Rock" wasn't necessarily the crime. It was usually because you got sent to a different prison, and then tried to escape/did escape. If necessary, you were then sent to Alcatraz.

The zombies took over the island and 4 inmates managed to build a plane to escape the island only landing on the golden gate bridge having access to a what they call a pack a punch machine.
I found this quite informative but the treble is very crisp in this recording making it very difficult to listen to loud enough to hear audibly.

Yes there was housing for the guards and their family on the island.
There are houses in the gaurdes housing blocks which are on the island next to the actual prison. So its like living next to a prison... on an isolated island

You missed one really funny escape. A guy (can’t remember his name) worked with repairing the guards uniforms and stole small pieces of the uniforms and in the course of 3 years or so he had gathered enough for a uniform and got out to a boat together with other guards, but the boat he went on was for a training course together with the whole police force and military on a military island, so he admitted he was an inmate and was sent back to prison
