In some aspects of rather be there as well. I’d go stir crazy, but there’d be nobody to prove how tough they are by starting so silly bs to get involved with, but where there’s a will there’s a way.
Except alot of them eventually go crazy from all the isolation.
Even in supermax, people get violated and guards slip up, so if you cause problems they’ll be waiting on the day the guards slip up and they’ll take you out

I said that at the beginning of the pandemic. Not so confident anymore😄
I spent 11yrs in prison. Some of which was in a supermax. Guards there are a lot more respectful then on lower level prison yard and although the “yard” surrounded by four concrete walls and a skylight there are no guards near by. The lower the level of prison yards the worse the guards get. They are very disrespectful, they incite violence between you and others around you. But supermax and higher level security prison times were easier because you didn’t have someone with a badge beating you, or trying to make your life worse. Prison is meant to rehabilitate. But you don’t get that on low level prisons. I was sent to supermax for a “conspiracy” that never happened but was made up by a gang investigator who at the time was under investigation for assault on inmates.
Also It’s against prison law to attack a guard unless they first attack you.
I’m from California and the supermax here is Pelican Bay State Prison.

Actually prison is to punish, to separate from society, to deter, as an example to others.
That is the problem. Prisons are not to rehabilitate, they give you the tools. That rehabilitation is up too you. The problem is simple it's you.

@@ms.annthrope415 actually it is a bit of both. Remember, most inmates will get out one day if you do not give them to tools to change how do you expect them to be better when they get out? Same reason I support hiring ex inmates you either risk getting burned OR you will pay for them again when they end up back incarcerated.
So basically Supermax prisons were preparing inmates for regular life in 2020.
The majority of them are not getting out thank God!

it's one guy who does it from a cell in a supermax prison using a smartphone he smuggled in up his backside, and his got a lot of time on his hands(between meals).

ADX Florence is the only FEDERAL Supermax, but there are many, MANY more throughout the entire nation.
I know this for a fact because I’ve lived in Maryland’s Supermax in Downtown Baltimore, and now they’ve built another one at North Branch Correctional Institution in Cresaptown, Maryland, near Cumberland..

I USED TO WORK FOR AN EXTRADITION SERVICE, AND I FREQUENTLY TOOK PRISONERS TO ADX FLORENCE, COLORADO (U.S. BOP ALCATRAZ OF THE ROCKIES). I WAS ON THE ROAD 58 OUT OF 60 DAYS STRAIGHT. I LOVED IT VERY MUCH.
I'm not a Liberal, I'm very much on the right of politics, a Conservative or libertarian. That being said I believe prisoners should be treated well and like human beings?
I'm amazed that most Americans are not deeply ashamed of their prison system and the treatment of the human beings held within it?

These are murderers, rapists, serial killers, so what good treatment do they deserve? And they didn't get there for one crime. They lived an entire life of constant predation on the weak and peaceful. They need to punished and if necessary, summarily executed, that's the only language they understand. They aren't fit to live on society.
You're a good person. Treating people with decency isn't a left wing or a right wing thing. Other "developed" nations have corrections facilities designed to reform criminals. The United States should be leading the world in inmate rehabilitation.

There is a difference in supermax prisons like ADX Florence. You are in a sound proof room with almost no human contact whatsoever.
as an introvert, you would go mental fast too... Its not a "private cell", its a completly isolated room, barely any view to outside world, no contact with others, no calls to family...

There are plenty of prisoners in maximum security detention who are sociopaths, men who have killed other prisoners, attacked guards, and would do so again if given the opportunity. For the prison reform advocates who want to end this type of incarceration, see if you can come up with a better means to keep the other prisoners and staff safe. Rehabilitation only works with a small number of prisoners. Most are way beyond that point, and if you the one who decides to let them out, and someone dies as a result, then you have to live with that because the prisoner wont care.

Far from safe, you should watch a few prison shows. They will get you. It's a treacherous place. 24 hrs to think about how to get you. They moved the main heavy hitters these blokes still run hits drugs extortion all from here.

After watching this video i think we should encourage rehabilitation programs more like college and sports, i know some criminals deserve death but giving a chance of redemption could lower the numbers of prisoners in the States and turn many of them into useful members of society.
This was tried pretty heavily in the late 1970s - with therapy, college coursework, on-site woodworking and mechanic/other job training, day furloughs, etc. Then someone decided to do a study to see how much it reduced recidivism or otherwise improved outcomes, and found that they....didn’t. Prisoners at prisons with extensive programs and those with almost none (varied by state) had pretty much the same repeat crime rates and other outcomes. Since it cost taxpayer money and had no proven benefit, the programs were largely cut.
That may be true for minimum or even medium security prisons but not supermax. People don't just wind up in supermax by mistake. Watch the show "the last narc" on Amazon prime, you'll see exactly why el chapo is in there. Some people deserve the harshest punishment that can be given

From someone who has spent 8 years incarcerated in American jails and prisons I have to point out a glaring error in your video. There is NO prison in the United States, and certainly no Supermax that has bars at the front of the cell. Only some old school jails still have bars in them. Instead prisons and newer jails have a solid steel door with a food slot and a tiny window. The cell itself is a concrete box measuring about 6 x 8 feet

Did those people miss that the vast majority of the prisoners are in for life or are on death row? You don't rehabilitate those people. Also, there's some people where rehabilitation is just too dangerous. I think that after you make the conscious decision to smuggle a bomb onto a plane, by underwear or by shoe, you're done.
To be honest, supermax sounds very nice. The worst part of prison has to be dealing with the other scumbags in prison with you. If I ever go to prison, an individual cell, books, and never seeing, or hearing another inmate is exactly what I would want.

I prison I know MCF Oak Park Heights is a Supermax prison, I did some design work in. Its completely underground, the exercise yard is inside with a window in the roof. The intake is the only building above ground. It looks rather funny, its this small building with all this space around it surrounded by a many razor wire fences.
This makes me feel better about our current situation.
No oversight is always, always dangerous and ground for abuses. Oversight is critical.
There is a greater oversight of this prison because of the this problem. The Stanford prison experiment is one of the reason for the greater oversight.
