what if the bags were weighing them down and they realized that that was gonna make the boat like thing they built sink and the only reason they made it to land was because they left those bags

the mother getting roses with signed cards is pretty interesting. she would most likely have been keeping in contact with her sons through letters while they were in prison, so she would know their handwriting. she could have even cross-referenced the signatures on the flower cards with old letters from her sons. i hope she got some closure and just didn't share it with the police/general public and that's why we think it's still unsolved
If they are alive and never got arrested again because they didn't do crimes, then escaping the prison did more for their characters than staying behind did for the fourth one.
My thought is like, what if Allen being left behind wasn't just an unfortunate accident, and he in fact purposely sacrificed himself to help the others escape. His whole story to the guards and police of "They were heading towards Angel Island" was all a plow to throw them off and they actually did plan to go for Horseshoe Bay. The items being left behind could also be a part of that confuse the guards, because they said "these are all items they wouldn't give away" which is exactly what they wanted the guards to think. Kinda just a theory but it came to my mind when they mentioned how Allen cooperated with the authorities. Secondary theory is that the other guys purposely left Allen behind and told him the wrong plan so he would tell the guards the wrong story and they could get away
If they were smart enough to escape the rock, they were also smart enough to leave their belongings behind to make the people think that they perished....
I love how, if the brothers did survive, they had sent their mom flowers on multiple occasions, and had dressed as women to attend family members funerals despite the risk it took if someone had found out that it was them. I really hope that they did survive, they didnt commit and despicably horrible crimes. They robbed a bank, cleverly escaped an "inescapable" prison and stayed clean from what we know for 50 years. These guys are cool.
What if they just dropped all that stuff in the water on purpose? What if they made it look like they died in the water so the FBI would be hesitant to look for them? These are really smart escapees were talking about here, and if I were them I would make it look like exactly that, and I think they would too!
D Hennny From what I’ve seen I haven’t finished the video but him lying to the Feds so they’d trust him but not actually giving them any true or important evidence so they’d make it
Maybe. I imagine it would've been hard to throw away something with sentimental value like family photos but if ya wanna throw the cops and the FBI off your tail, ya gotta just let it go.
I also figure that West would not have really told the authorities where the 3 prisoners intended to aim the raft for as the info. says he did....he would not have especially wanted to help them catch the prisoners and have 3 enemies come back to Alcatraz and find out he'd snitched and jump on him, so he wouldn't have told the authorities anything they never could prove he lied about.
they 100% survived. they left Allen on purpose because they thought of EVERYTHING yet all of a sudden Allen can’t fit into a massive hole?? unlikely. they also left those items to stage a failed escape. also, family members believe they survived based off of little signs they got from them. these men were too smart to have failed
Rise and shine Mr.Freeman, rise and shine... Not that I wish to imply that you have been sleeping on the job. No one is more deserving of a rest, and all the effort in the world would have gone to waste until... Well... Lets just say your hour has come again. The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world. So, wake up Mr. Freeman. Wake up and... Smell the ashes.
Fun Fact: In the funeral of the mother of the brothers that escaped, 2 tall manly looking ''women'' were present. Birthday postcards were sent in the birthday anniversaries of their mother as long as she lived and the biggest clue of all suggesting they made it out alive, there was a car theft reported a few hours after they escaped and the description was fitting the escapees.
There's actually a picture of them against a tree that was taken 5 years after their escape. They moved to a small village and the picture was proven to be true because in the picture there was a picture of a hwy in the background and so someone looked up when the hwy was built and it was new as there wasn't a road there before. So the picture was confirmed as true that they survived
Yeah they did say that after the escape the FBI or authories anywhere in California never had any reports of robberies near the areas, however, they likely meant this into effect ACTWR they were done their original search for the escapees. Meaning if it was only a few hours into the break of dawn that they escaped, the people would still be looking for them. Meaning this theft was likely them because this was before the FBI was done searching the ocean. This was the only theft they committed and it was before it was set into effect. This was definitely the escapees
@@thatloserkyle the fbi factors in the time when they were searching or doing something else, too :) not only from when they start looking for info :) but, i think they made it, too
You missed the coolest part, that Allen West apparently mad it to the roof eventually, but after the others had left. So he just stayed up there, smoking his cigarettes until dawn, before heading back to his cell.
epicfail OMG i get it!! 😂😂😂😂 Bismarck must have helped them make this plan, Bismarck always has a plan Also why let a little inescapable prison get in the way of a good crusade?
Yes ma'am. I agree. Like Shane said, with how well planned and executed this plan was and being there is no evidence that any of these men ever bothered anyone or committed any crimes after their escape, the FBI should leave them alone.
@@adrianw0w757 yea they accidentally tunnelled out of their cells, accidentally made a fake workshop over those cells, accidentally made a raft from 50 rain coats.Yea soooo lucky
Their ingenuity and determination make them so likeable that it’s hard to not root for them. And if they survived, they lived honest lives afterwards anyways.
From the Wikipedia about the escape, "Clarence and John were reportedly inseparable as youngsters; they became skilled swimmers, and amazed their siblings by swimming in the frigid waters of Lake Michigan as ice still floated on its surface." There was also another escape afterwards of an inmate that managed to swim to the shore of the mainland but was caught immediately after. Tbh there's a good chance that the men were able to escape, and good for them imo.
Yeah, in the video its stated that there was no evidence of thefts in the immediate area following the mens escape, but in fact a 1955 blue Chevrolet (California license plate KPB076) was reported stolen in Marin County the same day-a claim corroborated by contemporaneous stories in the Humboldt Times and the San Francisco Examiner. The following day, a motorist in Stockton, California, 80 miles (130 km) east of San Francisco, reported to the California Highway Patrol that he had been forced off the road by three men in a blue Chevrolet. The man who reported this could not have known about the escape yet, and yet his descriptions were accurate.
as someone above me said, it was most likely done on purpose. Allen get's questioned about it, gives the feds the wrong info about which island they are escaping to, but he gave them the wrong info but he still got time off his sentence, whilst the other 3 can escape in peace. For a plan this well thought out, I'm sure it was no mistake he was left behind, they were very clever.
@@FanniLatos I dont think anyone would take such a big sacrifice, that is to be left behind to leave wrong clues, especially the one with the idea to escape. Although it is a possibility. Regardless of our conjectures, we won't know the truth until they confess i guess
Imagine their son or grandson watching this and they'll be like, "well my grandpa used to tell that story and it was more detailed" and suddenly realized that fact lmao
That was my great grandfather, it was more detailed. It’s crazy how actually cash can’t really be traced like he said, even til today I still hold his word.
They waited 30 minutes in their secret workshop for Allen West. Knowing time was running out, they left a raft, life vest, and a paddle for Allen West, Incase he ever managed to make it out of his cell.
@@suhail1200 if they made it, i believe they went Separate ways since Morris was a troublemaker but smart tho. Morris was in and out of prison and if i were one of the brothers i wouldn't want anything with that guy for a couple years at least. Just my opinion
it’s kind of sad they found all their personal items like pictures and stuff, but what if they purposefully left them behind to make it seem unlikely they made it ?
I know that they were criminals and they escaped from prison, but the fact that they might have sent flowers to their mother and went to the funerals of loved ones is just really sweet.
I just wanna imagine the three of them all in the same nursing home (cause of course they’d be in the same nursing home) watching this and smiling. Knowing that they did this and it will never be forgotten.
As much as I dislike their criminal acts, I was rooting for them to escape. The Anglin brothers weren’t too bad of people, they often robbed banks at night or closed to ensure nobody was harmed and only used one weapon which was a toy gun.
Waking up at 7 am, getting a hot shower, having a "happy hour" everyday, being allowed to move into a cell closer to your homies - this prison doesn't seem half-bad.
Considering the brilliance of their entire plan, I wouldn’t be surprised if they copied down their letters, sacrificed some photos, made an extra paddle, etc. all for the priceless “evidence” of their death Just a theory idk
It only makes sense that they would plan not only this part would be thought of, but also the fact that Allen was left would be thought of too in order to keep where they headed and their fate a secret idk
to be honest i think the FBI arent that bothered now since it was a while ago and they dont seem like violent people who repeat offended so i doubt theyre exactly embarrassed or going after them full force
Brian Cruz You want to believe it, as do we all. A perfect ending to an amazing story. But in all likelihood they died. Not fact, sure, but the bay is treacherous, especially with a raft made of uniforms
I have a hard time believing three grown men, especially physically fit prisoners, drowned together at the same time. Especially since regular people are able to swim the same distance.
But it could be the currents that drowned them. A professional football player where I live drowned in a lake or river because the currents were so rough.
It’s a shame there aren’t many prisons in the US that have some of the rules in Alcatraz. Keeping prisoners happy/positive would really help to actually reform people, and would cut back greatly on violence in prisons.
in my head it makes more sense if the prison has very strict rules tbh, bc if u were to commit a crime and land in a prison were u feel like u are on vacation, u wouldnt regret the crime as much and would maybe commit another crime bc the prison is not that bad. whereas in a "strict prison" i think u would think twice before comitting the crime bc u are scared of living in such circumstances, if that makes sense (there would probably be more prisoners trying to escape ig but thats another story)
@@neymarjr-xs1lu I mean, that's one way of looking at it. Personally, I'd only get angrier if I spent so long in a strict prison. Plus, since I wouldn't be given anything to work out the root causes that led me to crime, I'd just start criming back once I got released 'cause which job would take me in? I think there should be a balance between these ideas. Your life isn't heavenly, but you don't feel downright miserable.
The prison could have aroused the ingenuity and desire to survie in them to make them excellent engineers...On land i guess they would have still been robbers
i mean they were bank robbers not serial killers or rapists so they didn't actually commit anything too morally wrong. i root for them, they seem like cool dudes
My grandfather actually knew Frank Morris when he was younger! My grandfather grew up on a farm and they would foster kids from time to time, and Frank was one of them when he was pretty young, like elementary school age. According to my grandfather, Morris would go to school with an apple in hand and come home with an orange. Basically, he was crafty/clever and went against the rules/had the disposition of a criminal even at such a young age. Eventually Frank moved on to a different foster home. Based on the stories my grandfather told me, there's no doubt in my mind that Morris successfully escaped and lived on. Great episode by the way!
That's incredible! I've done huge amounts of research into this case, and Morris's past is of particular interest since his life was so untethered. Next to nobody remains who knew him -- there are so few stories of his life before Alcatraz, aside from what was maintained by officials and kept in his case file. That said, there are multiple instances of him stealing oranges while he was incarcerated so he must have loved them. I'd love to hear more if you're able to tell!
Dude just imagine you and your homies all planning for this escape for months and you all are so exited to leave but you get left behind. And the whole time you’re just feeling devastated knowing that you’re peers are all out there living their lives again. And you’re still stuck there...
If I went through months of planning and preparation to successfully escape life in jail, I think Id have enough adrenaline to swim across that water and you wouldn't hear from me again either
West did all of this work, just to never escape. I kinda feel bad for him, like I know he was supposed to be in jail because he did wrong but I wish he could have escaped.
Do you not think that the plan was so detailed and ingenious, that they simply could have planted the life-jackets and raincoat bags with their personal effects to mislead the FBI?
Or alternatively, with the bags of belongings, they were thrown out to reduce weight on the raft- then the life jackets were discarded at shore into the sea, rather than leaving them to mark their landing ground.
i grew up in san francisco, and shane's right, the bay is terrifying. we were always told not to go far out in the water, because the currents get crazy and the bottom is really inconsistent. You could take one step and be completely underwater
For post Mortem: you know what? Those men showed sewing skills, talent in arts and craft, turned musical instruments into a key to their survival, used cutlery to escape prison and best of all showed teamwork and grit. I think they deserve a round of applause. Nicely done boys nicely done 👍🏼 ps loving the new channel Shane and Ryan, congrats on how well you’re doing ❤️
I mean, the MythBusters did an episode all about the Alcatraz escape and they actually attempted it themselves, and if my memory serves me right, I do believe they succeeded. So I believe that their survival was very likely.
Yes. They used period accurate raincoats , materials, and the exact methods the inmates used. The only thing they didn’t do was inflate the raft with a modified musical instrument (because how it got inflated really didn’t matter). They also launched in identical weather conditions and temperatures, and successfully made it to the mainland. They showed that it wasn’t just feasible, but likely that the inmates survived.
Honestly right now they could be sitting in a beach restaurant in Brazil sipping their margaritas and saying, “ yo anglin! Remember when we escaped that prison?”
Allen was left behind and yet didn’t call for the guards to rat out his cellmates. I think this may mean that’d he also be willing to give the wrong story about their escape plan to the authorities (and still get good behaviour privilege for it). Can’t say he was a good man, but he probably was a loyal one.
Imagine if they are alive and old enough to stay out of prison. Imagine if buzzfeed interviews them and they tell us their point of view. That would be the content I’m looking for.
Honestly, if they were still alive and I were them, I'd just write a tell-all book at this point. If they catch me, I don't have too much longer to live anyways.
I watched this a few hours before the episode aired by happenstance and had to come back here afterwards to see if it was the same people. What are the odds?
It means that Allen was left behind in purpose.. In order to fool guards, that other 3 guys can escape for sure... Buy anyways I'm so sorry for him.. IDK why :/
i don’t think allen was apart of the plan. i think they might’ve left him to use him and then in hopes when they went to wake them up in the morning him being there would buy them more time than 4 fake dummies. they could’ve also realized 4 people would be too heavy and one of the two brothers weren’t going to get left and if the guy who went with the brothers was a big part of the plan allen was screwed from the beginning if someone had to get cut. i believe they fooled everyone until the very end by purposely leaving the belongings telling allen they were going to angel island and the real plan was to follow the current.
@@uzhollywood5044 the thing is, i'm pretty sure allen was the brains behind the plan. that being said he either wanted to help his 3 friends out and sacrifice himself (because he didn't have much left of his sentence anyway) or they were dirty and left him behind on purpose in the last moment.
Erik maybe it was a mixture of both. maybe they realized someone had to stay in order to leave and never truly discussed it and they just left without him knowing. i’m still sure the reason he was left tho was because the brothers weren’t going to separate and the other dude was there maybe before the man who was left ( i forgot the names of them i watched this 2 weeks)
i think a pretty logical reason why their close belongings were found in the bay was just because the raft was not sturdy enough to hold all of that weight, so they had to let some things go.
Adding on to this theory; the men might have also discovered that having 3 people on was too heavy so the brothers pushed Morris off so they could survive. This explains the body sighting (being Morris) as well as the photo of the Anglin brothers
What is important, personal items or basic survival? The bags were left to convince investigators they had perished. But these men would have been involved in some criminal activity in order to further their survival.
i mean i think the more logical one someone said was that they didn’t want that evidence to be found somewhere else (like in a hotel they’d stay in) because literally some of the things they let go was paper. light as a feather
For Post Mortem: Alright my theory is that the Anglin brothers survived and Morris died. I can't imagine that the men had a 'No man left behind attitude' we see that since West the original creator of the plan was left behind. Based on my own research the Anglin Brothers seemed to be the most likely to make the trip, they were the youngest out of the 4 Inmates and grew up on a farm. It is also said they became skilled swimmers, and amazed their siblings by swimming in the frigid waters of Lake Michigan as ice still floated on its surface. I don't know if Morris fell off the raft or if they all did but in either situation I believe the brothers would've stuck together and powered on without Morris. If they had stayed on the raft and made it to land without Morris I can imagine they could've left all the papers they had with them in the water to make it look like they had perished along side Morris, as people would assume they wouldn't leave the papers that were meant to help them behind. I can also imagine that since the only items found in the raincoat bags pointed to the Anglin brothers, the bags could definitely be an attempt to make it look like they had perished. Otherwise if all three of them fell off I can imagine the brothers would've just left everything and swam for their lives. Morris was and Orphan and the oldest out of the 4, where as the Anglin brothers had an obvious drive for family. It just makes too much sense to me that the Anglin brothers pushed through for each other and their families and that Morris couldn't fight anymore. Morris' body was seen by the ship and the Anglin brothers made subtle connections back to their family. I'm not sure what you guys think but that's my two cents.
Your an absolute genius!!! I think your theory is the most likely thing that has happened. Though I wish, if one of them were to live up to 99 years, they would tell the whole story, just for everybody to know what had happened.
AfroNinjas Actually it isn't... it's a classic movie from '79, it stars Clint Eastwood as Morris, seeing it would be good though, if you want an insight of the occurrence out of the movie.
maybe people should start saying "itś escapable AF" or " this is the most sinkable ship ever made" and things will work just the way they "skould" because of Murphy's laws
I've been to Alcatraz twice and it truly is beautiful there actually. They had loads of luxuries for a prison. There were even houses on Alcatraz with some of the prison worker's wives and children. They even had beautiful gardens. They were lucky to be there instead of somewhere so bleak. They even had libraries, huge rec halls and had shows and movies for entertainment.
@@Soul56293 well so is the infamous Mansfield Reformatory (the one from Shawshank Redemption) but it actually ended up way worse than Alcatraz and I'm pretty sure it was known to be quite abusive to the inmates
Here are some things I want to point out. 1. I think they tested the raft in that work shop for leaks and to see if it would hold all 4 guys without losing air. 2. There’s a good possibility those guys trained their selves to physically help withstand that water as a back up plan. They could’ve taken ice baths or something equivalent to help them get used to that cold water and I’m sure they worked out a lot to keep in shape while also staying small enough to fit through the duct work. 3. I think the maintenance guy was in on it considering they probably wouldn’t have found that workshop and a lot of the tools without him. 4. The chances of them surviving in the U.S without being caught is very slim so I do think they fled to another country. 5. They could’ve been using those bags to keep the water out of the raft from the harsh waters and that’s how they lost that sealed bag filled with letters.
at this point i hoped they escaped and made it, all of their crimes seemed to be out of money needs and they don’t seem to have ever intentionally harmed someone either, they’re not the best people but that was one hell of a plan and i have no doubt the last phase of their plan consisted of getting the police to think they perished during the escape by planting those items, good job boyss
Okay but the fact that Allen was the one who initiated the plan, but was left behind... A tragedy, it's worse than a tragedy to me. But I don't blame the others ofc, I mean they couldn't have known if Allen did break through from his cell or not, and when they would've realised that Allen was left behind, it was too late....

True that
One of the rare Buzzfeed Unsolved cases where no one died.

There was also another escape afterwards of an inmate that managed to swim to the shore of the mainland but was caught immediately after.

The only thing they didn’t do was inflate the raft with a modified musical instrument (because how it got inflated really didn’t matter). I watched this a few hours before the episode aired by happenstance and had to come back here afterwards to see if it was the same people. What are the odds?
The fact that Allen hasn’t alerted the authorities immediately, even though he was left behind..
If the 3 did try helping Allen the whole plan would probably go wrong, but there’s a chance all 4 planned to leave Allen to fool the guards
This explains the body sighting (being Morris) as well as the photo of the Anglin brothers
or they had to ditch everything so evidence wouldnt be found
What is important, personal items or basic survival? The bags were left to convince investigators they had perished. But these men would have been involved in some criminal activity in order to further their survival.
i mean i think the more logical one someone said was that they didn’t want that evidence to be found somewhere else (like in a hotel they’d stay in) because literally some of the things they let go was paper. light as a feather
@@cakelaws Doubt they killed Frank, he had a genius IQ and to operate their raft, two had to blow the raft while one peddles so he’s crucial.
Honestly, i kind of hope they survived. Smart as hell plan, they kind of deserve to live? Theyre still criminals but hey, extremely smart!
And they weren't there for killing anyone, so like... nbd.
one dude recently came out of hiding and said he was the only one to survive. that’s what my grandma said
izzydog007 I looked it up and the guy claimed they all survived just barely tho
izzydog007 where was this??? link??
100%. They were gangsters haha this was so cool
This escape was so epic that it single-handedly tore apart Alcatraz's reputation and got it to shut down.
That clip of Anglin brothers masked as old ladies was breath-takingly hilarious
Though I wish, if one of them were to live up to 99 years, they would tell the whole story, just for everybody to know what had happened.
reading your comment made me wonder if the purpose of the bags with photos was to leave them in the water and make authorities believe they had died.
i definitely could believe this there's so much that make sense here
Great!!
Komalpreet Brar Or hopefully record it some how! 😮
They should make a Netflix show on the Alcatraz escape.
they shooouullldddd
Why ? The Shawshank redemption has already been made years ago.
Escape from Alcatraz movie is on Netflix.
Kal-Gelo Trinidad is it documentary-like?
AfroNinjas Actually it isn't... it's a classic movie from '79, it stars Clint Eastwood as Morris, seeing it would be good though, if you want an insight of the occurrence out of the movie.
Imagine the soul crushing feeling of just barley being left out of a prison break that worked
That hurts me just thinking about it.
I was rooting for them even though they are criminals
Honestly though... I really hope they made it.
It’s very likely for them to escape
Watch prison break

It's weird to think that Alcatraz was absolutely unescapable yet people escaped and the titanic was said as unsinkable yet it sunk...

Lol both those locations are bo4 zombies maps xD
Coincidence, I think not
That, my friend, is why we shouldn't brag about human's creations.
True that
maybe people should start saying "itś escapable AF" or " this is the most sinkable ship ever made" and things will work just the way they "skould" because of Murphy's laws
It’s also haunted
@@Soul56293 well so is the infamous Mansfield Reformatory (the one from Shawshank Redemption) but it actually ended up way worse than Alcatraz and I'm pretty sure it was known to be quite abusive to the inmates
@@abenirart I've been there as well thrice; it was (in my opinion) worse. It was alot more labor intensive and they were tortured horribly.
Damn bruh they wake up at 7:00 in the morning in prison, and im out here waking up at 6:00 just to get to school on time smh
at this point i hoped they escaped and made it, all of their crimes seemed to be out of money needs and they don’t seem to have ever intentionally harmed someone either, they’re not the best people but that was one hell of a plan and i have no doubt the last phase of their plan consisted of getting the police to think they perished during the escape by planting those items, good job boyss
Josh Anderson they did survive

i think this is one of the very few cases that deserve to be left unsolved
Okay but the fact that Allen was the one who initiated the plan, but was left behind... A tragedy, it's worse than a tragedy to me. But I don't blame the others ofc, I mean they couldn't have known if Allen did break through from his cell or not, and when they would've realised that Allen was left behind, it was too late....
He didn’t initiate the plan he was just a tag along who helped get some cement glue and paint. The mastermind was frank morris
