Technical Tuesday - Trigger systems and the Timney design

  • Hey everyone! We've had some questions about the Timney trigger in our guns. We can't warrant function or safety of our guns with any aftermarket components. With that said, we thought it would be worthwhile to walk through some differences between how various striker fired pistols actually operate and how that relates to the Timney trigger. Enjoy!

I think this was an excellent video on the difference between Double Action (DA) and Single Action (SA) in striker fired firearms. Thanks!
I like my MR920. The trigger is _ok_ , but it is spongy... spongier than the GEN5 Glocks I've shot. I don't want to go to an SA trigger in my MR920 (like the Timney Alpha), but I would like to see Shadow Systems (1) work on improving their trigger (as Glock apparently did), and then (2) offering an "upgrade" to current SS owners.

I second this. The Shadow Systems trigger definitely has room for improvement.

    • @davidciarcelluti5084

Is it a foundation series? If so, it uses a polymer trigger shoe, which can feel a little spongy. The combat and elite series guns use an aluminum trigger shoe, which can alleviate some of that, and they do sell it online. Just something to consider.

    • @Philmoscowitz
      @Philmoscowitz 2 дні тому

@@davidciarcelluti5084 Thanks for your input. I have the Elite version. It still feels spongey to me. Another issue is it becomes uncomfortable after about 100 rounds because the trigger is not flush enough with the shoe. That might not be a problem for other people, though. Anyway, I'm having a gunsmith install a trigger from Ramm Tactical. Going to pick it up this week, so hopefully that'll solve the problem for me.

I've tried it in my SSC MR920 and DR920. I've not yet installed the other one I have in my MR920L because that's my EDC and I'm not fully confident in it yet. I need to call Timney. In hundreds of rounds tested, I've had two instances when the gun fired upon release of the trigger. Another friend had the same thing happen routinely in a P80 build. I have a feeling it has to do with the trigger housing needing to be OEM Glock instead of some proprietary part. I believe SSC uses a proprietary trigger housing; at least it's stamped with SSC on it. My problem might also be that, in performing prior trigger work on the original SSC trigger, I polished the connector. That helped smooth out the OEM trigger somewhat, but it's may now be causing an issue with the Timney installed. The good news is I've got time to play with this some more and the tech support folks at Timney are fantastic, so I'm going to give them a call this week to learn more. According to a gentlemen I spoke with before purchasing, they've tested their trigger in SSC guns with a good result, so it can be done.

I put this Timney trigger in my DR920. I've fallen in love with it as a range gun, not a duty gun. The trigger is much lighter and more crisp, but I'm agreeing with you on it being a "competition" type trigger. That being said, I love it for what it is, a pre-cocked trigger pull.

However, he did test installing it in his Glock 19 Gen 3, and it installed and functioned perfectly. Timney indicated on his last call that Timney had incurred some defective parts in their mfg. process causing issues for installations for Gen 4 pistols. Ìronically I have seen a lot of negative reviews on the Shadow Systems triggers on the MR/DR920 Elite models and people that prefer the factory triggers on the Gen 5 over these. When spending this amount of money on a "Elite" version of a weapon that is supposed to surpass the Glock quality, why on earth would it be acceptable to be spending even more money on trigger upgrades? To me these models does not sound very "Elite" to me. Any takes on this?

💯 agree. If someone is going to purchase one of your firearms for either their EDC or duty. LEAVE IT! ALONE! As a duty or EDC pistol being modified, you run the risk of that pistol not being reliable. If you change ' one ' part, other ' factory ' parts my not work together. Then your changing out more parts. If your not shooting match shooting competitions. Leave your firearm alone.

I shot my new XR920 yesterday for the first time. I needed to zero the Holosun 507 optic and get started on the 200 round break-in. The Holosun instructions say the sight is zeroed at 25 yards from the factory. Shadow Systems installed the sight and sold it as a unit. I set up a 25 yard target and used a rest. Fired 3 and went to check. Not a single bullet hole. Got a much larger piece of paper and found it was 12 inches left and 7 inches low. That’s 48 clicks right and 28 clicks up. After about 15 shots and further adjustment, I got it where I wanted it.
The trigger is ok. Not great, but serviceable. It is not completely flat faced and the insert protrudes a bit when the trigger is pulled. Slightly irritating, but not as bad as my G43.
I have the Timney trigger in my G19. Sweet as sugar. Smooth as silk. Hot knife through butter. Game changer. I’ll make the decision on installing on in the XR920 after the break-in. Maybe the stock trigger will improve with time.

Spend that money on classes and learn how to shoot it if it’s a defensive weapon. If it’s a gamer gun or a range toy, fine. I get it. Same.... I learned a hard leson after purchasing my XR920 two days ago. After taking it to the range yesterday I left very disappointed because the trigger is horrible, 7.1 pounds on my Wheeler digital gauge. I'm no gunsmith, so I don't know what can be done to fix this, but all of the reviews I'm seeing on aftermarket triggers say they don't really work with this gun! :-(

I have 6 Glocks and 3 P 80s. All but one P 80 has the Timney Alpha Comp. triggers. It's plain and very simple, these are Competition TRIGGERS. They where made for competition use. I neve would own a Glock because I could never understand why anyone would put themselves through the worst trigger ever made. The only reason I have the Glocks I do is because the Timnely triggers. Not one of my Glocks would break under 6 1/2 lbs. new out of the box. To me that is far beyond reason to have that heavy of trigger unless for Duty use. All my guns are fun, range guns. I do have 3 I use for daily carry.

I am reather disapointed in this video! Why would you talk about it and not show what you are talking about. This seams like a waste of time and effort on the subject. I clicked on this video hoping to see a new tirgger. All you did is talk about single action and double actionin a few different guns. This is disapointing.

The stock MR 920 trigger SUCKS. Huge disappointment. I just got mine (special ordered) and the trigger is easily the worst striker pistol trigger I own. I hate it. Debating on selling the gun

The shadow sytems trigger looks cool but the trigger pull is no better than a glock, some of my glocks actually have a better pull.

I’m sad that you don’t offer an option that would let the consumer decide. No shadow systems branded upgrade that would allow us to retain warranty. I love the Glock compatibility and the design of the firearm but seriously disappointed that the trigger feels worse than the legendarily terrible Glock trigger. I wish there was a better option other than void my warranty or just deal with it

Proud new owner of my MR920P. I do like nice triggers, I am cursed with my previous years of competition on 1911 pattern guns. It would be seriously fantastic if you turned out tuned up performance trigger kits along the lines of Apex. Also an alloy magwell + backstrap combo.

I am no expert but it seems that the trigger in my Walther PPQ match 5 has a short nice trigger pull. My MR 920L seems like it takes forever to fire , a long trigger pull? I don’t know if that’s the best way to say it but that’s what it feels like. I like the trigger in my Walther way better

So after 3 months I decided to finally try the Timney Trigger with a 3.0 Black Yikes Conmector and Zev Pro slide kit. And it is just as smooth as my Staccato XC. Super hard to believe, a Glock having a good enough trigger as a 1911? NO WAY. But yes… seriously take up is super minimal, wall is very crisp, reset is almost INSTANT. Timney and Zev have been around a while, I figured let me give them both some love in a MR920L. With that being said. Don’t expect any kind of warranties or liability issues with Shadow after changing OEM parts to aftermarket. That’s pretty common with majority manufacturers.
