Technical Tuesday - Zeroing Your Red Dot Before Firing

- Here's a quick technique to get your red dot very close to zeroed before firing a round! Think of this as a technique similar to boresighting a rifle--however, there is one confusing twist that is easy to manage if you are ready for it. Happy shooting!

Holy crap!! My buddy and I kept saying…the dials are backwards! This explains why and now I can’t wait to go back and sight it in this way. Thanks!
I've always thought of it as taking the irons to the dot. Same process, just how I thought of it in my mind.
As an old shooter new to pistol optics this was an awesome explanation. I was going crazy at the range wondering what I was doing wrong sighting in the pistol. TY
Best red dot zeroing tutorial I have ever watched. You did an exceptional job explaining the process. I can't tell you how confused I get when trying to figure out theses processes. Thank you!!!
Your overthinking it
Had to watch 7 videos before learning this basic info!! Thanks!
You don't understand how helpful you were with this video. I got my optic bore sighted within a minute, but thinking my screws were on backward, I was going to zero my optic in reverse when shooting 😅
Awesome explanation! Love your Tuesday videos. Thanks 🙏🏼
GREAT lesson! It works great! Few shots needed to dial it in. Thank you SO much for sharing this! Saves time and ammo.
technical Tuesday are the best, keep it up guys...got my MR920 elite with the Holosun, Cabelas special... red dot is driving me crazy , but what a hell of a gun, after 300 rounds , no cleaning, no issues not one issue at all. keep it up SS!
Thanks for keeping it simple,, Trevor. I love my CR920E & MR920C! Best pistols I own, I want the full lineup now.
This was sooo helpful. Mounted optics on my MR920 and Zev OZ9C and used this method. When I got to the range I needed no adjustments. Thank you for this!!
Thank you for this info. Got my first red dot today and followed this. Got to the range and my first grouping at 10 yards was money. Needed no adjustments. Definitely a good starting point.
Just got my first reddot and this is exactly what I was looking for..Thank you
Just what I needed. Very simple and well made video. You gained a sub.
Thank you for explaining, that really helps
1st method is POI 2 method is POA.
Generally speaking, adjusting to POI is way more common. Even most manuals have instructions that way.
POA is to match your dot to your sights. Which is why it’s reversed.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU. I had thought I had lost my mind and every gun I had was messed up.
So much more about life makes sense now. Thanks Trevor!
I picked up a Mecanik M01 and I figured going the opposite direction got me to my bore sight. I was like uh this ish is backwards but now it makes sense haha. Thanks for the info. I thought my sight was made backwards lol. I matched the red dot right on my front green sight and this Sunday I'm gonna test it out in the country. Great video bro thanks!
UMMMMMM, maybe it's just me but much simpler to just say. Adjust the dot to the front sight and go from there? I have done that on all my optic handguns with zero issues. Maybe I missed something???
I wish I’d seen this 7 years ago when I got my first Red Dot! I wasted hours, then I just waited until I got to the range and wasted a box of Critical Defense!
Great video. Very informative, thanks!
Simply brilliant!
Thank you! Finaly found what I was looking for...👍
So I have a sig 365 x macro with the romeo elite sight and every time id look down the optics I couldnt see the dot very well. It was also not co witnessing at all. So I saw this video and thought im going to try this . Everything looks 100% better and im ready to go shoot it. Thank you for explaining this.
Thanks, simple and helpful!
You gained a new follower, thanks.
Another great video!
Thanks for the info! Big help 🤙🏾
Good info, it pissed me off before I figured this out!
Great job on the video thanks
Working with my first red dot last night I just moved the dot to the front sight but had no idea why everything was backwards. 😂😂. Thought I was stupid not being able to read the direction.
DUDE?!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
This technique works great; I've never had to adjust more than a click or 2 during live fire after doing this.
Great information
Thanks, I would of moved the dot the same as my rear sight too. Saved me from a lot of trouble.
Cool vid thanks for sharing!
I get what you’re saying.
My question is, how do I know how many clicks to turn vertically or horizontally to move the dot to the irons?
Nice video. Thanks
Better explanation would be moving your front post green dot to the red dot. In this case, green dot is your group.
This is essentially what I did with my PDP, ended up a little low at 10yrds but with a couple tweaks she was doing great. Just for fun I have even slung a few out at the steel on the rifle range, managed about 4/5 before packing it in.
Some goobers might think it's silly to teach people the basics, but making sure that people feel comfortable before or after they dive into a new hobby is how you keep them invested. It's part of why Dems and some Reps would probably like to see information like this removed from the internet, because it does help the 2A community grow.
Did you have the stock sights or had you changed them out before initial zero? Picking up my PDP today and red dot tomorrow.
Appreciate the info!!
Awesome can't wait to go to the range to verify 👍
Thank you sir!!
I just did this exact thing,😂
I figured it out pretty quick though.
Wish I would've seen this first.
Thanks, good video.
Love my cr920.. 600 rounds no issues.
I do this with every gun with a red dot and it works. It gets the dot really close if not dead on zeroed
Thanks for this and all tec videos. After much resistance,Just got my first red dot, MR920 elite Holosun. Consider myself a good shooter, weird feeling with the dot. Thanks for the explanation. So bring your dot on top of the sight, some people say forget the sights? For Mr it’s helpful and it makes sense to align with sights. Thanks again keep of the great work SS.
like wise, I broke down and got me the MR920 elite like yours. I am 60, very good shooter like yourself, but this thing is driving me crazy. different schools of thought on this one. I still can't get as tight groups as with my iron, but I found out for me I need co witness, align sights, other wise it drives you nuts. they are all good explanations, but do what works for you. After so many years of shooting, you remind goes to the sights automatically and trying to get away from that will give you a F... headache.:). so I went from enjoying my shooting time, to be frustrated because of the grouping or lack off with the red dot... I should ve stay away until I really needed it. :) ! hope this helps...
Great. Thanks.
Thank you 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Love me some Technical Tuesday. Thanks Trevor. My Holosun 507K was nearly dead on after install on my Covert 920. So much so it freaked me out a little bit. Plug and play anyone?
Get an American made optic for your American made pistol.
Quit being cheap.
@@thefrogking481 that's funny because the phone or device you typed that comment on was most certainly not made in America. Along with the very clothes you have on your back and probably 80% of the stuff you come in contact with everyday. Holosun is good stuff and you should try it before you knock it..
@frostyheat22
Only thing you got right was the "phone".
But there's no other choice.
Thanks for explaining that. Where can I get that t-shirt Bro? Looks like one of Clint Emmersons.
This is hilarious, and true af.
You are absolutely correct and the only one on UA-cam that is correct the dot should cowhitness with the iron sights!!
So what I'm getting is instead of moving the red dot to the iron sights, you're moving the iron sights to the red dot
The sites are the group you want to move.
First Off before doing anything !!...Zero-In your iron sights ( Your Irons are your Zero Not the Dot ) Then Zero In your Iron Sights to wherever the Red Dot lies using normal elevation & windage .... It's that simple !!
Just say…..take the iron sights to the dot. Simple.
I learned the hard way yesterday 🤦♂️
So if you’re aiming at center target and The groupings are a little low. You want to obviously raise the elevation. While doing so when turning the screws, the dot should be going down towards the groupings?
What about if you don't have rear sight to co-witness?
I don't have a red dot yet just wondering if that technique will work on any red dot optic?
If you shoot archery this concept is easy to understand.
This explains why I thought my red dot was reversed…
We called it lollipoping the dot.
I have a weird situation.. my red dot is exactly how he drew it while I’m looking down my iron sight (my red dot is off centered to the left) but for some reason when I use the dot and not the iron sights, it’s on target. How is that possible?
Should the dot be right on the front sight or above just touching it?
5 star video
I moved my dot to the target before I left the house and I noticed it was the opposite of what the optic said. Then I went to the range and when I shot the grouping went off paper. And of course I reversed what the optic said and then it was not on paper anymore. Now I know why!
I guess I just don’t understand the point of a red dot if you need iron sights and have to cowitness anyway.
So the dot has to be on the front sight?
Lol. Sad I didn't realize this when I was trying to slave my dot to my Irons. 😅 I eventually figured out by trial and error but I was so confused for a while. Good video!
When people say “slaving” the dot to the irons, are they meaning overlap the dot with the front sight?
@@JG54206 yes, atleast that's what I mean ;)
@@SolidSnake_1776 Gotcha. I was always kinda confused when people said that.
@@JG54206 yeah overlapping the front iron or right on top to get you close and then you can adjust from there depending on your desired zero distance.
@@SolidSnake_1776 Makes sense. I wish I had thought of that when I bought my rifle red dot. Didn’t need to buy a laser bore sight lol.
Sweet thanks. I’ll give it a try
Well explained man, thank you for that!
With your semi-universal optic cut, does the new holosun scs fit on the xr920?
Same question
So I'm confused because today at the range I sighted in my red dot by moving my dot to the point of impact or to the group as you put it and it worked perfect, but your saying to do the opposite of that? Are typical red dots opposite of this? I have a monstrum ghost crs, could it be that it's backwards because it's a cheaper optic?
More confused then ever before..but excuse my ignorance cause I’m brand new in the gun game. So I got my gun, iron sights are lined up pretty good. I add a red dot now. Looking thru the red dot now why can’t I just adjust the dot if need be to the center of screen and be good to go!??
Yeah!!
Holy fuck am I this stupid? I always thought the dot was suppose to be ABOVE the front post, and by a bit. I have been driving myself NUTS the last week with my new CR920 lmfao.
Thank you for another awesome tip. I am glad to know I did this right!
It’s called lollipop get that red dot dot just above that front site almost like it’s sitting on top like a little head and the front sides the body lollipop popping it
Was very, very, very helpful. Go opposite as if you want to make it worse.
its good just for home ? and in range need to do it Straight ?
This is assuming your iron are zeroed, with my mr920 i zeroed my red dot and then i had to drift my rear sight to get them to line up when i lined up my irons
No matter what I do I can get mine to work for me g19 gen3 with a trijicon SRO. Not milled, mounted where the stock rear sight would be. I can line the dot with the front sight. I’m also a newbie. What am I doing wrong?
The red dot manufacturers designed the arrows to point to moving the group (and not moving the dot), which is counter-intuitive. There is probably a good explanation why, but it's driving people crazy as it does the opposite of what you expect.
Total protonic reversal!
Trevor. So you are saying that when you have your iron sights on the target the red dot should be on the same spot as the front sight. What if you want the red dot to be in the middle of the screen? Or is having the red dot higher on the window the rong way to zero it?
If you want the red dot to be in the middle of the screen don't look down the irons. The only way you're gonna have both the irons and red dot in the middle of the screen when aiming with your red dot is if your sights are too tall. People always get sights that are way too tall for their optic and it bugs the piss out of me. If you're not using a suppressor you should be using the shortest sights possible to sit just above the frame of the optic. Lower 1/5 cowitness is what I use. I want my irons the hell out of the way when I'm using my red dot. You'll always see the front sight in your sight picture when aiming with the red dot, but your rear sight will be nowhere in the picture. The irons are literally there as a failsafe if your optic fails to work. Get them as low as possible.
Thank you for your time and help Trevor. I got it.
@@stevenrowe5047 haha I'm not Trevor, just a guy on UA-cam.
@@MySiGGYSAUER sorry about the mix up but I have what I needed Thank you.
Shouldn’t I be moving the dot to the bore-site dot?
I think mine is defective it won't go down to touch the top of the front iron site. No matter what I do.
It seems my dot changes position depending on the angle that I look at it
Totally got the takeaway from this, just confused why the directions become reversed when trying to align dot to iron sights? Anyone explain?
If he didn’t move/change the red dot locations on the board, you probably would have understood it better. The word “reversed” is used incorrectly here because he moved the red dot location only left and right of the iron sights and not below only above the iron sights.
I put a $200 PSA Dagger SW4 GatorMouth RMR milled, 1/3 Co-witness, suppressor sights, 4.5 threaded barrel FDE complete slide on my G19X frame.
Mounted a Holosun HE407c x2 green 2moa dot on & I've heard the Holosun's are somewhat already 25y zero'd.
The dot was sitting just above my front post when in alignment.
However, my 1st thru 5 shots were way left & low. I just made 1 adjustment to each screw & bam! Dead on at 25y.
(1st time for me making only 1 adjustment) Now I'm Punching out a 1" dot 25y & in while rested.
Love that upper, actually made my trigger better. Those wanting to know how a Gen 3 fits a Gen 5 frame? Just swap out the backplates 🤟
But how do I do this if I can't co-witness?
So from what I understand they are both different system. Not the same, maybe unless you have suppressor sights. So this is confusing as the red/green dot should be in the middle of the glass mostly. You are not using the iron sights. Not unless the red/green dot stops working. This is a pistol not a rifle. So either you are sharing a completely different point of view from the police trainers I've seen or it's just wrong. I'm confused. Not looking to contradict just to clarify your point of view here.
Man I’ve watched this twice over and the takeaway I’m getting is move your irons to the group? Or your screws move the dot to the group? Boutta give it another watch and still be fuckin lost😂, i have suppressor height sights on my g19 clone with a holosun 407c on it and i fr just out of the box slapped it on, moved the dot right above my irons took it outback and sure enough, pristine chefs kiss and on target from around 10-15 yards I’d say, idk video just has me lost asf🤷🏼♂️
I'm confused. At 1.45 minutes into your video your group is up and to the right of the red dot. Since you are moving the sight (red dot) and not the trajectory of the bullet, don't you want to move the sight up and to the right?
That’s what he is explaining here.
The screws are labeled to direct the group to the dot
The screws move the group to the "dot"
how about if you want the red dot to be independent instead of salve with front sight?
Keep in mind that if the red dot and the sights are both shooting to point of impact, they will always be “slaved” together. With our lower 1/3 co witness, you will see the dot in the lower 1/3, on top of the front sight, if you are aiming with the sights. Otherwise, if you are ignoring the iron sights, the dot can be anywhere in the window and that is where the bullet will strike. Most will try to shoot with the dot roughly centered in the window, but the magic of red dot optics is wherever the dot is, the round lands. Trevor
And here I thought I was crazy because I noticed it when using a boresight. “Everybody puts their markings on backwards”, I’m such an idiot💀💀
A better way to describe it ( the reverse) and remember it is to "take the iron sights to the dot"
My simple-to-understand is this:
Where is the dot? Little high and a lotta left? Then turn the adjustment screws the same way. A liitle higher and a lotta left.
What if your Red Dot Optic is mounted without the Rear Sight installed?
The way I zero the Red Dot is with a laser bore sighter just pick a distance you're comfortable with for me I did a home defense zero at 14 yrds the distance from my bedroom to my den. Clamp your handgun in something to keep it from moving . Put a bullet laser bore sighter in the barrel, at your preferred distance adjust your optic's red dot so that it's on top of the laser bore sighter dot. I hope that helps you.
