Back in the 1990s, we all loved the FTO. But with FWD and crazy insurance costs, it's a car we've all but forgotten.

If u're born in the 80s and u've played to gran turismo 1 on PlayStation 1. You should know the unbeatable FTO LM!
LOL
The GTO was faster
The FTO LM on GT was awesome! In that electric green sort of colour....i remember it like it was yesterday lol 👌🏼
The LM variant was from GT3 and GT4
980 HP, 4WD and wicked fast.
though, it sounds more like it has the engine out of an EVO
Exactly what i thought, screams 90's and Gran Turismo
Thanks to Gran Turismo, this car will never be forgotten by me.
My thoughts EXACTLY.
For me, it's Thubderbolt, GT Advance, Sega GT Dreamcast.
I bought one on gran turismo 4 ps2
Samee
Agree
Remember when Mitsubishi made exciting cars like the Evo, Eclipse, 3000GT and this one?
Yea.. shame.
Yee rip the evo 2016
Mitsubishi 2019: Which size of SUV would you like to purchase sir?
@@tmmtmm speaking of which even Lamborghini have stepped in to SUV to boost sales.
I heard mitsubishi will continue the lancer evo
I had a manual 2.0 V6 GPX MIVEC for several years. I found out they existed via Gran Turismo and several years later got one imported to the UK via neweraimports. It was a fantastic car and it also sounded incredible.
I had the rattling window problem after a few years, but hell, it was a fun car to drive, was like nothing out there, and turned a lot of heads.
Gran Turismo!!!!
Edit: Woah!! Thxx for the likes guys. 😊
I only knew about this car from of Gran Turismo
I had a green one !
I had a white one with a 360 hp :D
I miss used and old cars in Gran Turismo. They were the best! Everyone knew what they were because of it.
uaedriver , And from Lightning, kung fu racing comedy with Jackie Chan
My FTO is 23 yrs old.. with me 8 yrs and I love it!! Amazing car with soul. I will never sell it...
Update? Still have it?
@@samusaran7317 nah…engine died. I’ve replaced from Mivec and sold it. Dunno if still on road…
I love this car. My step dad had one he bought for £80. I remember getting picked up from school in it and everyone loved it lol. It's now in a scrap yard😭
The person who sold it could've got a ton from the scrappy?
I used to own a fto gpx in my younger days and loved it. I have looked at them in more recent years and it seems very hard to find a decent example now. It was always a little underpowered but always drove really well and the sound hitting 80mph at just over 8000 rpm in second gear was awesome.
@Chris Graves Much like the previous Civic type-Rs! (and the previous Civic Si) The current Civic type-Rs are like an Accord, LOL! (If not more of a Saab-type persona)
I didn't forget it because Gran Turismo 4
I didn't forget it because of Gran Turismo 1 and 2.
rubberstack I never used it much in GT1 or GT3, and I never had GT2, but in GT4 I used it all the time
I use it in Gran Turismo 1. The reason is that I do not like ultra fast cars plus I think it handles okay. And in Gran Turismo 2 in Sunday Cup's second race I always thought that the FTO was the Toyota Supra and then wondered how the hell did my 88 Silvia Q's beat it.
Polyphony, please for the love of god please add this to GTS
And it was always the car leading the AIs in the beginner's cups
Never avoid 90's sports forgotten classics, they are always a lot of fun
My dad had a black FTO when I was growing up, wishes he never got rid of it and I wish he didn't too, such a beautiful and powerful car
One of those has been going around my town for years its a joy to see and I love that it’s now getting the coverage it deserves
Fun facts: They're the natural rival of the Honda Integra. Has family car size disc brakes, calipers, drive shafts. Best sounding FWD because its a short stroke v6. Fastest accelerating FWD in first gear of the 5-speed manual (8000rpm only = 60kph instead of integras ~72kph). Won car of the year in Japan in '94 and '95 and has optional fluro green/blue oval badges for the C-pillar. The second generation was developed in a wind tunnel and has aero panels underneath the front and a special 'aero' sticker on the back. One was used in developing mitsubishi i-MIEV and broke the record of an electric car in 24 hours travelling 2142km.
Who else remembers Jackie Chan racing an R32 Skyline GT-R in one of these in Thunderbolt?
I do.
I was just thinking that too
Why the hell would you not try to find a manual with MIVEC? This is like judging all Supras with only haven driven an automatic N/A....
so true
Didn’t they make an AWD version?
He said this in the review
@@tony.m7396 nope....why?....I don't know.
Krzysztof Bering was thinking of the gto lol
This is like old top gear and I LOVE IT. Keep doing videos like this. Really brings back the nostalgia.
I didnt forgot about this gem... I hope Mitsubishi brings it back along with 3000GT, Starion and Evo :(
It is now nearly 2021 and I have a 1995 FTO - and it looks still agelessly fabulous !
Congrats mate, it's a beautiful car. And a bit of a novelty! Enjoy.
I still own a 2.0 Mivec v 6 1996 model. Bought it brand new 24 years ago and it still kicking =D
I used to know someone with an FTO. He LOVED that car.
I’m starting to like these kinds of videos
I had the Mivec version of these and it's the one car that I regret selling. Loved the fact that know one knew what it was.
had one 13 years ago! loved it but had manual gear box......drove it from UK to France many times ....great fun!
Another great video, love to see unusual and forgotten cars.
Its not a bad car... you can use it a daily driver and have a little fun with aswell. The people who are complaining probably drive a punto themselves.
Lol I don't drive a Punto and I think ftos are shit, and what?
I drive a Punto (love it) and I'd like to check this FTo out.
@Joe Gonzales It's a Fiat hatchback. A shitbox basically.
I actually love people underrating this car. At least this is the only jdm car i can afford in my country.
@@dixonbainbridge923 someone’s a bit triggered.
That. Sounds. AWESOME! Great vid. Great car.
I never forgot it, fell in love with the fto lm in gran turismo 1 back in the day.
I had a 1994 FTO while I was in the UK. 700 quid and it lasted over 2 years. Loved it. Full exhaust setup from the headers.
I always preferred the GTO. I bought one a couple years ago. A 1990 with pop up head lights a 3.0 v6 twin turbo 4wd and 4 wheel steering. 5speed manual. Had mine tuned upto 450bhp was a monster, one of the cars I really miss after selling
Errm, I own a 1994 Mitsi FTO, it's still running and i've not had to spend anything on it except general maintenance of things all cars need replacing at some point.
I now own 2 FTO's
Do you own 3 now?
i had the 200 bhp mivec in manual and the sound it gave off when the mivec kicked in was awesome, literally the best sounding car i,ve ever owned, turned heads every single time you put your foot down, sadly hardly any left in the uk due to rust underneath and the manual mivec edition was alot rarer than the triptonic ones aswell,if i saw one for sale now in good all round condition would snap it up in a heartbeat, real shame you could,nt have tested the mivec manual model, you,d have loved it
I had the manual gearbox FTO, it had the slickest gear change I'd ever experienced, that smooth slotted feel.
Absolutely brilliant car! Have never owned anything like it! Very very underrated
I had one, awesome little powerful engine 0-60mph 6.95seconds
Always loved the look of those...
Another great video, I'm loving this series!
I still love it and would buy one anyday.
Alex you should redo this video with the mivec manual version as of course a 4 speed auto won’t be as fun. Maybe give it a 2nd chance
Tomcole020 yeah exactly the gpx sounds wayyy better aswell
I had a manual GR which looked just like this one and then a manual GPX (one of the last ones made) and I genuinely loved that car. It sounded fantastic, really wasn't that slow either and looked great with the face-lift.
This isn't a bad review but it's pretty disappointing to see an Auto GR reviewed because it's far from the best version.
Brake set up better on GPX as well, has thicker rear anti-roll bar too.
I own a 98 FTO GPX Manual but im in Canada.... I would have loved for Car Throttle to come drive it!
Jan Giecek mine has gpx brakes on the front
Loved this car on Gran Turismo, so much I had one imported from Japan back in 96. What a car!
I imported one of these from Japan in 1998. Loved it.
Great vid. We all want a continuation of the Altezza series!!!
laowhy86 c-milk!
More ideas for my is300 please!!
They sold it then it got wrote off!
sadly they sold it
I already replied mate but thanks for repeating me, spastic.
I think this car looks and sounds pretty amazing.
I have owned two Fto's in the past. Both mivec auto and manual. Fantastic cars for the price and the sound is superb. Insurance loads of specialist companies out there. I paid from £300-£500 fully comp. Plenty of Fto specialist out there too for servicing and repairs.
I had one and absolutely loved it. A GPX new shape in silver that looked just lovely. It sticks like glue and that makes it's drive deceptive your going faster than you seem as the drive is so easy at speed. It's one of those cars that comes alive the harder and faster you drive it. The higher revs the better 6000+ and it loves it.
This was my favourite car when i was a kid then I saw insurance prices.
Why on earth would you review anything other than a manual GPX?? It's a completely different car.
tsrnikrug i've had 2 GPX's. Looked alright but there was nothing to it.
I had a mivec GPX manual and absolutely loved it. Never had any bother in the 6 years I owned it and it was very quick for its time! Insurance wasn't too bad at all?
Is the GPX the one with Rear Wheel Steering?
I think part of the problem is there are so few of these FTOs left on the road in the UK. They are super super rare. So its not like we can can pick and choose what can be reviewed.
@@dorleysflir5350 yes but it was passive
I always remember the black racing version on Gran Turismo, loved it!!!
What a great idea for a series. Fits this channel very well.
My friends dad had a grey import back when they were fairly new, It was pretty nippy in GPX form. Not Lancer Evo or Subaru Wrx sti quick. But quicker than most ppl give it credit for.
The only sad thing about the FTO is, that it's a FWD car.
Yeah :(
Philip Cooper i like fwd tho i mean as a car guy i like everything with engines ❤
Guck you !
No idea why people have such a downer on FWD, I have a Clio 182 Trophy and a Honda S2K, the Clio destroys the more powerful Honda through the twistys and is just as, if not more engaging to drive.
BTCC, one of the greatest production car race series ever seen, predominantly FWD.
So many great cars with FWD configurations that so many people will miss out on because they make up their mind without actually trying them.
Drive any of the following and tell me FWD isn't fun:
Pug 205 GTi
Pug 106 Rallye
Golf Mk1 & Mk2 GTi
Any Renaultsport (or williams Clio for that matter)
Original Focus RS or later ST
Civic or Teggy Type R
The original Mini for gods sake...
... The list goes on, and these aren't slow cars either, go to NBR and watch the Meganes own 911's and Clios carry as much mid corner speed as Caterhams...
I've owned many RWD cars, some AWD cars, a quite a few FWD cars. FWD is awesome, if you open your mind to it and learn how to drive to its strengths.
LOL and it's a fucking automatic!
I had a 1996 GPX version a year ago. Mine was bulletproof. Replaced it with a Subaru Impreza 2007 WRX STI. The FTO will always be in my heart though.
Insurance was 1360 with no blackbox. Got it when I was 23.
I never forget this car, because this is one of my childhood dream car
Hey there car guy scrolling down the comments...
yo
Hello random person. 2 years later I'm considering importing one of these guys!
@@wafflefries19 2 years and I'm still alive and I still love cars! Good for you! Upload a video or something of it if you do!
@@saintshaggy1372 will do!! Take it easy!!
Oh, I never forgot about it.
Saw one on Facebook and am now saving
Love these. My dad had a black gp manual about 6 years ago. Brings back so many good memories. Alternator was fcked on that one too. Had two batteries and an overnight charger I remember it well 😂
Have to admit, I’ve always secretly fancied an FTO!
“It sounds like a old F1 car” it doesn’t though, it really doesn’t
Yes I often mistake a Civic with a fart can for an F1 car lol
I think he may be thinking of the 70s style.. not the 2000s high pitched whine.
@@jadedsun619 No F1 car in the 70s used an N/A V6. Renault had their 1.5 V6 Turbos in the late 70s but those sounded nothing like this FTO
They do in the flesh. Very unique sound. Short stroke small cap v6 at 8200rpm.
The gpx at 8500 sounds more f1-like. This is the shitty version.
my mum had one of these as her first car (in red) used to love driving about in it as a kid :D
I had one of these. I had the 2.0 v6 with manual transmission. It's absolutely flew and was very very responsive, not at all slow and sluggish. I only had it a few yrs as the rear caliper failed and it needed a new exhaust and catalyst converter which was too expensive and uneconomical to repair but I remember what a fantasticly fun car this was for me.
I personally love the design of the fto. Looks very cool.
Yeah it's fucking gorgeous.
Reminds me of the Supra for some reason
some say that FTO actually stands for "Fantastic To Own"
It might as well do
Automotive Misfits is one of your best series ever
I didn’t forget it - I used to own one ;) manual mivec GPX in red, great car!
Finally some Mitsubishi
I call it the baby Supra xD
I used to drive this in need for speed underground, so much nostalgia
7:55 Mitsubishi also made a 1.6L V6 :)
Ormmwar 6A10 which was in the Mirage & Lancer.
This is scaring me
And a 2.6L straight 4
And the MX-3 had a 1.6 V6 also..
"I think the Alternator has Failed"
Best way to start a Video
Jackie Chan chasing an R32 with the FTO in Thunderbolt, legendary!
Alex, I have a car which is equipped with a similar 6A12 2.0L V6 as the FTO. Its called as a Proton Perdana in Malaysia or Mitsubishi Eterna Visage (E54). I had a 4 speed Automatic gearbox and later had it converted to a 5 speed short gear ratio Manual Gearbox with a final drive of around 5.0.
Your experience with the manual will definitely change your impression of the FTO!
from the fiat coupe to the FTO you're suddenly covering all the cars i raced with in Gran Turismo 2. do a silvia k's next
I can't imagine the Silvia K's being easy to find here in the UK.
Adam Lawrence u right he needs to do the delta integrale instead
I love FTO's, always been intrigued with it, don't know why. I guess it may have something to do with there being 3 of them in my neighbourhood :D
I saw this car today! It's a dope little car
You needed to drive the Mivec FTO. I owned the 170 BHP car, but traded it in for an upgraded 220 BHP (checked on a rolling road to ensure all the upgrades actually did anything) Mivec FTO and it was a beast. A completely different level of power to the car you tested.
The FTO
looks like a spyker from the front
Oh man the memories. This car maxed out was my bread and butter intermediate car in GT3. So many hours logged with it.
Can't believe that these are so rare now. I remember seeing these all the time as a kid.
Ide love to have a modified fto I kinda like how it looks.
Great series, what else you got lined up?
It's quite pleasing on the eye.
I've a 1999 FTO Version-R sitting in my driveway owned about 7 FTOs over the years tracked this one down after years of hunting 😬🙏 had GTOs aswell
I had one and fucking loved it with the tiptronic box 😄
I crashed it eventually 😄😄😂😂
No shame man! I own an MX5 with a 6-speed tiptronic and it's amazing, like a video game in real life. Those of us who grew up with clutches in cities don't see it as a novelty, just an annoying inconvenience!
Had one of these on Forza back in the day. Always remember it being a cool car but I always regretted the fact that it wasn't RWD. I feel like this car would have been a cult classic had it been rear wheel drive.
At the time it was released it is one of the fastest fwd.
I love this style of videos!!!
Jackie Chan: Thunderbolt 1995. Legend!
7:25 I died
😂😂😂😂
Mivec kicked in!
Came looking in for the comments for this timestamp, Me too!😂
Sounds really good, that exhaust note
I had one, it was a great little car that handled well, went quite well, sounded fantastic and reasonably cheap to insure.
"You can't really drive it when it's raining. because there's not really a lot of 'wind deflection' and the rain seems to pour straight into your face regardless where you're driving" - What does this mean?!?!?
it means it has no glass in the front window so you get a wet face mate
@@TheDeceptikron Ha ha! :D
Suggestion for another Automotive Misfit: Fiat Seicento Sporting! (I may be slightly biased, but DEFINITELY worth a shot!)
Miller Corner might better do the review of a ciquecento instead. Same but lighter
Does anyone remember the Schumacher edition?
This car was my favorite on GT. Especially the widebody race version
Never had these in the states but I always remembered this car from gran turismo and tokyo xtreme racer ☺️
Lets give it a 4G63T, and an awd system.
or maybe a 6G72TT, who knows
the best mitsubishi sound 😉👌
My mate had the the had both the non mivec an mivec gpx version (manual) and they are 2 very different beasts ...... deffo would recommend spending the extra on the gpx !
Great looks, saw one in Liverpool once, childhood dream completed haha, all due to Gran Turismo 1!
This fto is a non mivec tiptronic/ auto.the auto gearbox is crap and ruins the driving experience.
it's like a civic Esi when compared to the other fto models like the gpx Mivec and version R .
You should test the GPX Mivec version with a manual gearbox.i have one of you want to test drive it in summer
How reliable is it and what s your mpg?
@@alexbabtan2395 there are certain problems that always arise such as the alternator going it can be a difficult job a lot of FTOs are neglected as it takes a lot of time and effort to change the spark plugs because of the engine configuration and the inlet manifold being in the way I can't remember the MPG but it's not very good a Honda Civic TYPE R ep3 would be better and it has 6 gears is light and the engine is better
@@alexbabtan2395 I get 10L/100km but yeah it's a 20-25 year old car and most of them have been neglected.
