Directors note: the video was originally 50 mins long but a lot of things were cut out due to time constraints. Had we had more time/budget with the truck we would have done quite a few things differently. The most notable are we would have used four non tesla motors and more battery power to alleviate the single shaft/single motor design which wasn’t our first choice but budget/time prevented us from getting too crazy, still very effective as it able to pull 100+ tons with 700lbs in the bed. But still a design choice we wouldn’t have originally chosen, but It’s a hell of a rowdy truck!
im biting my
Rich -- One other thing you can do on the next one, (if you build something with an LS and another np205 for example): Is to convert that np205 to "Twin stix". It actually will have three shifters in the transfer case (on the floor). You'll have the usual high and low; and then you have two other shifters (one for each axle): that allow you to engage/ disengage the front AND/OR rear axle as you wish, on the fly. This allows you to perform a "front dig"-- which is where you disengage the rear axle (and lock your rear E-brake)-- and engage the front axle only: And you turn your wheel a bit and as you get on the throttle the front wheels will pull you in a tight circle, pivoting on your rear wheel. It's a pretty cool offroad trick when you have the "twin stix" setup; and will get you out of a jam in tight places. Super worth it if you build a trail truck that YOU actually plan on using a lot. It's a must upgrade. You can only do the conversion with an NP205 or an Atlas transfer csse, as far as I know.
mate, it was too long for what it was
@@calhollior just get 4 motors and all the tricks you can imagine without transfer case, shafts and differentials
100 tons? On flat ground maybe.
Building a vehicle for RDJ is a massive flex, I'm glad you got the chance to do that.
Sometimes you just need to say no! 65 Stingray was a horrible mistake.
Weird flex but OK
Lol 😂
Freddy, stop watching UA-cam all day! We need that P1 finished!
Freddy, we know your real name is Obadiah Stane
Better watch out or you’re gonna be buying your own 8000$ mclaren battery mr freddy.
not weird at all
Good to see the Electrified Garage guys more. Reminds me of the awesome van build.
the van was my favorite series. i miss stevon
that van was the best because of how unique it was.
Hard to believe anyone would start with a truck that well done but the fact you had something nice to start with is great and I really respect you going through so much effort to keep the truck whole. The fact it's reversable with no traces of the conversion is amazing. Kudos guys you killed it
I support Russia
@@Stealthmuizshiddd me too mafucka 😂😂
@@Stealthmuizuhh based alert?!?
Yes they killed it!😭😭😭
As much as it hurts to see a classic neutered, Rich has had and still has some really cool petrol powered vehicles, plus let us not forget, he's also the guy who yarded all the lameness out of a Tesla and stuffed V8 in it's place!... Pretty sure that earnes him a pass on this swap!
Only Rich would get Robert Downey Jr in his video and title it Tony Stark (IRONMAN) and leave RDJ's actual name out of it. Anyone else would have absolutely milked his name for every click it's worth. That's why we love you Uncle Rich
It’s because Rich knows his viewers have the smarts to KNOW… he does not NEED the kind of people who don’t know who Tony Stark is to watch his show… lesser YTers would also have opened with footage of the celebrity… this is about the car, and it’s very well appreciated !
To be fair more people probably recognize the name Tony Stark than RDJ.
Whoooooosh 😂
Uncle Rich is bigger than the actor, in my world.
It’s a dig at that mutt E.M. Who likes to imagine himself the real life iron man.
Those dudes at electrified garage are kings. Super talented dudes - wealth of detailed info.
Nice to see the EG team and their expertise shine as they explain what they did. It would be nice to bring them back for more shenanigans like the good ol days.
I agree. This is the first video that's caught my attention in a long time. I just want to see people build EVs.
I have never watched you live before but man… one of my hero’s. Please, keep up the awesome personality, content, and realism…. I don’t pay for anything monthly but UA-cam…. For people like you!
I've been a Ford guy since High School (I'm 50) so I remember times I was pissed off when people stuck a Chevy 350 or some LS BS in a Ford chassis... after several years I understood the ease, interchangeable and availability of parts made that option a near "no brainer".
After 30 years, I just say fuck it. Make what you want and have fun. I spent years being asked why I would spend so much effort building inline six 300cid engines, instead of just dropping in a small block. Now I understand how it feels being questioned about someone questioning my choice or passion.
I have a twin turbo EFI 300 being controlled by a speeduino. I understand the weird looks when I explain to people that I no longer have a distributor (custom trigger wheel and crank sensor instead).
Here in Oz, stacks people are fitting Ford Barras (think of the Barra as the 2jz bigger and better brother) to everything. To Nissan Patrols, Toyota landcruisers, GM Holden Commodores etc. The Barra can make > 2500hp on a street drivable, Partially grouted factory block and head.
Fecken A
Nah, man. The real question is why your building a 300 cid when you should be building a 2.3 Lima.
tl;dr - Young people are way dumber than they think.
Rich and crew.
Good for you guys. You guys deserve every bit of highlight from this. Keep being you guys and happy that you got the attention you deserve. I hope this opens up some new opportunities for you guys and allows you some higher levels of lobbying to get right to repair laws passed. Godspeed.
Get rdj to endorse right to repair on his environmental bs cause it’s more electric vehicles being repaired instead of “recycled” battery. *chefs kiss*
Some say he was born in sandals, and that he can communicate with birds using a flute. All we know is he’s The Stigvon.

Stevon is the new stig.
I knew it!!! The helmet man must have some legal restraint or something.
Great to see that there is no beef between the brothers from a different mother.
RDJ made the Marvel films worth watching. Now they are worth missing. He's a legend.
Is Stevon Tony Stark?
Dang, uncle Rich knows iron man
Umm, is nobody going to comment on Steven being the new Stig driving that Rivian at the beginning?
There are loads of people commenting on it
Not The Sig. That is The Stev.
It could be down to the fact that they recorded this promo before the crash, I know it happened a while ago, but who knows how long this ad had been in the works.
The intro to really resonates with me. I’m working on rebuilding the rusted out hull of a 50’s Jeep and converting it to electric, and the comment section has made it clear to me that people have very strong feelings about this subject. You can take a classic, swap out literally every part and call it a “restomod” and that cool, but the moment you put an electric motor in it, they say it’s ruined?
Beautiful job ruining….er I mean converting this one. You’ve got a very talented team.
Huge congrats on the collab with RDJ!!!
"How is every electric vehicle delivered? By a diesel truck." - Rich Rebuilds
That aside, great work on the electric truck!
Because that’s all we have right now. Is it impossible to deliver it with something else? Of course not.
Gonna be a looong time before we see lots of electric semis on the road
Back when "gasolene" vehicles first arrived on the scene, how do you think they were shipped? By STEAM locomotives and STEAM ships. Technology changeovers don't happen overnight. When big airplane piston engines were reaching their end they added jet engines to the piston engines, then they eventually deleted the piston engines. In Europe electric cars ARE shipped via electric trains.
@@markmiller6844and how was that STEAM generated? By coal. Just like electricity is generated today.
@@TheNilla2020 How long :)
Steve-on being reintroduced in the b-roll footage the last episodes is exciting. I guess we should now call him The Stig-on.
He was driving the truck in the beginning
@@ethanking4954 Thanks captain obvious.
I really love this, that the guy who started out alone working on flooded Teslas got to this point, amazing, really inspirational, no doubt took so much blood sweat tears and late nights. You should be very proud of yourself, Mr Benoit :)
Good to see Rich doing bigger and better things. Soon to be a household name.
I see alot of hate in the comments but I think thats cause we live in a world of followers. We Respect ur creatively keep up the great builds 🙌
This is an incredible behind the scenes for the episode. I started watching the series specifically because of this build and this BTS is blowing the episode further out of the water.
Is it Downey's Dream Cars?
Great work as usual by Rich and the crew. Rich is a natural in front of the bigger cameras. 👏
“ Mannn these electric vehicles swaps are a game changer, the future looks bright for electric vehicles technology “‼️💯🎯
Rich is right.. (23:50). You don't want to pull in 4low. Chad is correct that it puts less stress on the little output shaft, but everything AFTER the transfer case is multiplied in torque, due to the lower gear raito. So the drive shafts and inner axle shafts, or even the transfer case itself will definitely explode if someone is too heavy stomping the throttle in 4low, especially under a huge load like sand, mud or towing.
steven we need to see more than just you stunt driving
After watch the first episode of Downey's dream cars I'm convinced rich and Robert are related some how 😂😂😂😂
steven sighting!
The video quality has been evolving so much in such a short time It's so fun to see this different, more mature style of videos after watching you for over 5years. I can't wait for more to come out
Thanks for keeping the same effort and energy
Rich never answered the question though...... "Will that bad boy smoke all 4 tires at once?"
that easter egg of stevon tho
Where's Steven Salowsky lately? I know he wrecked the race car but why isn't he on the show anymore? It's sad that he doesn't get to be a part of this.
Please more electric harley content
i love this stuff. Watching Rich growing from stumping on old teslas, to building Tonys Toys - amazing.
The sound change is incredible. Super cool build.
Great opening!! Nailed it.
Rich, I've been watching the RDJ videos, and I'm really proud of your work. Well done! When I first started watching Dream Cars, I was pleasantly surprised to see you there. Spreading the good ideas and helping to innovate!
Stevon is back?😮
So great to see you and your team doing big things!
Such a shame that the other guy missed it all. What was his name again?
Man your team inspiring to see that conversion from gas to electric and then see the episode on Robert Downey Jr HBO series y'all pull two army vehicles a tank and a giant semi truck incredible Man salute to you and your team 💯
My favorite person in the whole UA-cam World is you Rich. You have the exact same sense of humor, the small group of friends I grew up with has.
nice to see the farm truck doing work
Pretty cool. Congratulations on your accomplishments. You have a great team.
Heck yeah!!!! So happy for you guys. Really have come up within the last few years. Man, building a truck for Ironman... COOLEST THING EVER!!! 🤙🏻
Dude Rich? I just watched the first episode of that show on HBO max and i am still impressed and for you to be the first episode in Robert Downey Jr's show??? Thats king status. I know it probably doesn't matter? But im proud of you as well impressed. Dude you do such amazing work and im wanting now to figure out how to EV convert my 1964 Volkswagen bug. I was so excited at the end of that episode it was freaking amazing. I've been watching your channel for years and its awesome seeing you progress throughout the years. I bet your channel will blow up even bigger now congrats for being on Robert's show. He must have been a blast to have been talking and hanging around with. Good job man good job.
you guys always end up with such clean sick builds! well done guys!
I think electric trucks are sweet! I'm saving up to do the same to an old Chevy or Ford with the Ford MachE GT motor. It's only 868,000 points!
Was that Stevon driving the truck during the sponsored segment?! 😮
Lol thought i was the only one that noticed it
Yepp ..
This is incredible! It's amazing what youve been able to build, through your skills and knowledge. Great job
This video was WAY more interesting than the episode of Downey's Dream Cars. It was 15mins about the car conversion and 40mins of unnecessary theatre.
There's nothing you guys can't build! Awesome video
We miss you Stevon, R.I.P.
Stevon was driving the Truck
no that was the stig
IDGAF what you rebuild, what you do is amazing and always fantastic to watch. 👌👍
Great seeing Rich on Robert Downey's show. On the first episode! Rich is the go to expert for this episode. So cool!
Congratulations on making it to Tv!
Stig-Von!
You guys looked great on the show! Nice to see the additional footage of the drivetrain. Another great job Nice that the episode gave everyone real credit for the work!
The boys at EG absolutely killed it with this build!
Poor Truck 😢
No ending... what a jip
Sweet truck in the end!
Not sure I have fast forwarded Rich Rebuilds or Rich Automotive Journalist. Steve we miss you. Rich REBUILT...
lol was that stevon in the helmet?
Next Episode:
The bay doors open on the military Heavy Equipment facilities. There's a bunch of fog and crates littered throughout. A figure appears beyond the haze and makes their way forward. It appears to be a Mark XVI 'Nightclub' Iron Man Suit. As it approaches, you curiously notice it has no boots on; just hairy, bare feet. You hear an unknown person mention something about "being grounded", perhaps to the earth? The helmet cracks with the sound of high pressured gasses and begins to whirr open. Under the helmet reveals our very own Steven Salowsky! HE'S BACK BOYS AND GIRLS!
now if Rich can get the army to let him electrify a tank? they have to have a few old ones laying around?
You have a great crew of mechanics. I remember when Rich built stuff himself.
I would 1000% drive and love that truck.
Rich will soon be a part of the MCU.
You guys make this look EASY!!! Damn that's nice truck, before and after.
I really appreciate you hauled it down with the old cummins swapped farm truck. What an awesome build.
Also, you guys have perfect chemistry
how long did all that work take to finish?
beautiful conversion.
These are honestly my favorite episodes. When you mad scientist and break it all down. I wish you listed parts for tbe build but i have google and ii can do the work. Great job!
Those guys in the workshop are real Geniuses and craftsmen🤘, and Rich is not to bad either. (Pretty smart to👍)
rich - love how you kept it fairly basic - needs more lites but not too many more - looks better than a rivian - way way better than a cybertruck - props - build another one of these for yourself and sell the rivian - put 3 pv panels in that can store beind toolbox and you almost never have to recharge - for long trips put a liquid diesel in the toolbox and exhaust out through litebar - 1000+mi range, try to drive across the country in one shot - more good content ideas #driver ate
Damn I want to see it pull that tank. I think dual motor was the right way though. Yea its more complicated but it would make it comparable to other trucks on the market. Otherwise a truck body swap with a Rivian or Ford Lighting may have been the better choice. imo
I've driven heavy haul trucks weighing close to 80tons for 25yrs and have snapped drive shafts 3 times that size so pulling that big rig is definitely a impressive move with that drive system
Now I think it's Sunday. Every week begins with a fresh Rich Rebuilds upload.
Hey I just watched this on Netflix. Great job!
What was it called?
@@frogylocz Yes I'm well aware. To many alcoholic beverages.
Stevon missed out 😅
"same size as a 'literal' thumb". 👍 As opposed to those figurative thumbs we find so common. 🤣😂 Love this channel. All good things.
Great job on the video folks! Thanks for making it.
Not being nosy, but how is Stevon doing? Is he coming back??
With the $x4 driving ,do you have to extra weather/waterproof the electric engine or is the factory seal good enough for ,say mudholing etc. Does the motor also need a breather tube?
I don't know about this one specifically, but on the off-roading tesla, they did aside from underbelly shielding. I don't think they did any sort of waterproofing.
The motors can handle it like in the original car, but sealing the batteries outside the original pack is the biggest issue.
2:38 the way buddy runs over all excited like a little kid to look at the engine lol
15:38 I never knew driveshaft brakes existed! This is a first for me!
Monster trucks also use them.
@@4literv6 That is really cool!
@@TNRVG I thought so to, makes sense when you think about how heavy&powerful they are. Working in such confined spaces as stadiums. I've wondered tbh with evs using their conventional friction brakes so much less, Thanks to great regen capabilities.
Example the newest gen 3 forums e cars have NO rear hydraulic brake discs at all. Only use the rear motor regen combined with front motor regen and then front discs when needed. Even then they claim over half of all braking events can be handled just by the regen itself.
In a conventional road going ev it can be over 90% of ALL braking happens through regen only.
So I wonder why more evs aren't bringing the brakes inboard&deleting the rears? If a 200+mph 600hp 1,400# race car doesn't need rear discs why does any much less capable road going ev need them.
Also servicing ev brakws is 3x or longer the intervals as ice vehicle's. Then with inboard brakes you would also get much better polar moment of inertia for handling. Plus you could design some true aero wheels without being constrained by brake cooling concerns. 🤔
You can fit 4 hub motors directly into the tire
And thus add huge unsprung mass = bad ride and handling
@@nordic5490 you can do some clever torque vectoring. I dont think adding an axle, gears, and a differential above the spring of the tire helps with unsprung mass. It would actually help lower the C.O.G... in turn acc improving handability. Plus you have instant torque and no gear losses.
Great to be able to watch this after the episode aired. The gearhead in me kept yelling "Don't do it to that truck!"...until the build details were picked apart.
Now I want to swap out my LT1 for an EV with insane HP which shows, it can be done
Hands down the best intro….like…EVER! 😂😂😂😂
Hats off gents…please continue 🙇♂️
This was EPIC! I love the work you did on this. Amazing, thanks for the video!
Driveline components for the most part don't care about power transferred, they care about torque. That stubby prop shaft and the welded diff will see a lot less stress if the drive unit was changed from approx. a 9:1 to 4:1 reduction.
It was necessary to enable the truck to reach some reasonable speed. With 9:1 ratio before the diffs it would likely struggle reaching even 60mph due to over revving the electric engine.
You’re leading the way uncle rich! I’m a petrol head all day, but EV retrofits are the future like it or not!
no. Some times they are protected because of there age. No need to ruin them
So you can just leave them be witch is a great law and you can still mod your old car
I dont like it. Just doesn't fit imo
Not really until prices for the parts go down considerably witch wont happen since already those batteries are made with slave labor, cant really go cheaper than that and batteries degrade even when sitting. In gas or diesel engine it can sit for decade or two and only thing degrading is seals and belts. On the good oldies even those are non issue since you can make your own seals etc rather easily.
Just went trough 2store engine that had sat in garage unused for 20 years. Mild cleaning, sanding the points, replacing gas lines and one pull for it to start.. Try that with EV that has sat 20years...
@@Hellsong89 whould blow up 😂
