@Alex L I think Motorweek has never shown the true potential of any car. But, they are closer to what an average driver could achieve. I remember a few road tests that had incredibly slow times, compared to every one of the magazines.
When I was young I always thought Porsche was blah and always looked the same, etc. The older I get the more I appreciate what an amazing car Porsche makes. The 911 turbo, regardless of generation, is truly the quintessential sports car. Power, handling, balance. It really is the total package. Porsche engineering and pursuit of building top of the line cars is just flat out admirable. Kudos to you Porsche, not only for making the 911 turbo the great car that it is, but for doing it for generation after generation without compromise.
Great car to have alongside my 1991 C4 ZR-1 Corvette... Be a nice pairing of competitors from back in the day... ZR-1 lapped Roebling Road Raceway slightly quicker during a head to head test by C&D... Must have been a fun day!
$98,875 in 1992 is $182,963.86 today (May 23, 2019). You can get a base 911 Turbo (not the Turbo S) for $161,800. So the new 911 Turbo not only performs better than this 27-year-old example, it costs less too, when adjusted for inflation. Amazing!!
I never thought the MotorWeek theme would make me emotional, but here we are. The version in this outro is like the sound of my childhood hanging out with my dad.
Porsche was way ahead of everybody with the Turbo in the early nineties. It was the dream car for many. Obviously the situation is much different now. So many choices.
The 964 is probably my favorite classic 911. A lot more refined (and less demanding to drive fast) than the older cars, but still very true to its roots WRT looks, quirks and size. The more modern and "perfect" they get, the less interesting I find them as driving machines. Still: If I *had* to choose one as an everyday car, I'd probably go for a post-face-lift 997 - which is my favorite one of the more modern 911s. The current ones have just become way too "perfect" for their own good - and, more importantly, they've grown to ridiculous size. Any time I see a 991 or 992 near an older model, that unchecked growth really stands out to me and I'm reminded that the 911 used to be a pretty small car - even by non-US standards.
So what have I learned watching this video: 1.) Even if I had a six digit salary, back in 92, I still couldn't afford this car. 2.) Even today, the Honda Civic Type-R, which has more horsepower can't beat the 911 Turbo (I know it's an apples to oranges comparison). 3.) I know understand why the Porsche Turbo had a whale tale. It just wasn't to make it look cool. 4.) Porsche has always been bad ass. Back then, like any other boy, Ferrari was my favorite. Porsche, is the pinnacle now. Why? I grow up and realized that looks isn't everything. Eventually, form and reliability become more important. I just wish they would do formula-1. On the other hand, GT racing is their specialty.
@@richardmiller6422, re-read the post again. I stated, "can't beat". Maybe in 2025, the Civic Type-RR AWD, GT model will finally be able to beat a 90's generation Porsche.
Better comparison with a Honda today would be the NSX. The 98k pricetag, adjusted for inflation, would be about $178k, which would make the current NSX a bargain buy.
@@ErwinSchrodinger64 Maybe if the Porsche was left stock. Modified to their full potential there isn't much on the road today that could beat it with a professional driver.
I've never owned a Porsche but I've been putting some very serious thought into buying one for the first time , and the 91 through 97 models have really caught my attention the most. I'm on the very verge of making my decision and purchase
I am grateful I don't have to work in Porsche's styling department. Every time a new Porsche 911 comes out, it has to look different, yet also look like the original.
My 2016 F165 has a 2.7 twin turbo v6 with 10 more hp/ 40+lbs more torque and weigh 1500 pounds more. Yet it gets 19/26. If you had told me in 1992 this would be possible. I would have died laughing.
I'm all about American muscle, and the Corvette especially, but this thing...Jesus, this thing is automotive perfection, even with its obvious VW Beetle lines.
I love the classic style 911. It's immediately recognizable as a Porsche by even people who know nothing about cars. Old school analogue cars > today's digital cars.
92 911 Turbo’s are going for well over $100,000 in 2021 - 1992 Corvette ZR1 are around $15k. If one has the money, the Porsche is a much better investment😂
I actually prefer older more simplistic interiors than the interiors of newer cars with screens everywhere and overcomplicated everything. When I sit in a newer car with all it's fancy infotaiment screens, electronic parking brake, digital gauge cluster etc I can't help but think "when is all this shit gonna break?"
I like many of the old interiors. You could feel where the buttons were, so you spent less time looking on what part of the screen you had to click on.
Did I hear that right? Nearly 100k? And after purchase you realize its still just a car. Small motor with a turbo. I love Porsche styling but the pricing is simply to cater to those with deeper pockets.
Christ, you won't give up on the 'hidden dash controls" . how long has it been that way. believe me, if you own the car you know where the controls are. ask me how I know...
I like the looks of this generation, especially the rear.
Brand Malone me too👍🏼
The 964 is the best looking 911 generation. Unfortunately, it took most people about 15-20 years to figure that out.
Same here
Oh my good lord. Early 90s Porsche was pure excellence.
777jones golden age of Europeans and Americans, now they have lots of useless details.
4.8 and 13.1 stock is still pretty darn quick in 2018.
99ft 60-0 is also really good for today - now think if it had modern tires, those acceleration and braking numbers would get even better.
$99k is also still a lot of money
Look at the times the 1989 911 put down in their test.
The 1970 Chevelle SS 454 does low 13s 1/4 too.
@Alex L I think Motorweek has never shown the true potential of any car. But, they are closer to what an average driver could achieve.

I have always found MotorWeek to provide all of the necessary information wrapped up into a short but sweet review.
I agree. John Davis still has the great narration for the road and comparison tests from Yugo's to these cars.
5:20 John: In the back, there is something that looks like seats, but don't try to sit in them. You may never get out! LOL
For this reason, the 911 has been a "Touring Car" at times.
yes that's why the back seat is better for extra luggage
The back seats in the vet are even smaller.

My grandfather had a new one ....
He used the backseats for his German Shepherds Porsche and Audi.
William Egler LOL...my kind of guy!
Phew!! Man, I would take that car over almost any modern day sports car today! And love seeing Craig Singhaus driving. One of MW's OG's! 👍
I love the old school 911 interiors!!
Best car ever! Never, ever selling mine!
Never selling my 3.2 either!
*slaps roof of car*
You can fit so many beers on that spoiler
SOLD!
The back seats actually fit a 12 pack just right.
These were awesome, and the later 3.6 turbos were beasts.
964, favorite air-cooled. perfect looks.
A manual gearbox... We’ll miss them pretty soon. What a sad story!
On that 0-60 run you can see the turbo kick it in the pants. Looks like a great time even by today’s standards. I want one!
That stout Porsche air cooled fan assembly is unmistakable. Its still crazy for me to hear about high output air cooled turbo engine. RESPECT
Nice Porsche! One of the last air cooled 911s...
I always liked the air cooled 911s because of their "unpredictability", which forces you to be in the moment while driving it.
Air cooling is extremely impressive for a car of that power
good luck even sniffing one of these for 99k today! the depreciation curve has been insane the past 5 years or so.
These were selling at a $10,000 premium when new.
Love this and the last air cooled right after it.
It has certainly aged well.

@3:58 - The center cap requires adjustment. A rotation of 108 degrees clockwise should do it.

964 T last of the hand built Porsches.
I was not expecting that historical reference at the beginning.

Motorweek, do you have the '92-'99 Pontiac Bonneville SSEI review? please and thanks
This featured vehicle is one of the finest automobiles money can buy, provided space is not your #1 factor.
Space isn't an issue at all. It probably fits in the garage very well.
Best looking 911 imo.
Just when I thought Motor Week was running out of the really interesting Retro Reviews...
The interesting reviews are of cars that weren't reviewed by everyone else, like a Astro minivan.
Love the 964
God bless this channel
What a piece of art.
I never thought the MotorWeek theme would make me emotional, but here we are. The version in this outro is like the sound of my childhood hanging out with my dad.
I have always thought Porsche hp was low as a kid. But after seeing that 0-60 wow that's one of the fastest for the time. Uses all that 315 hp well.
Wow was not expecting that take back. ..such a mood
Yeah. !!! I still have 1992 turbo
Oh hell yeah.
Very low production numbers was the reason for the silly price. I worked for a large Chicago dealership and we only got one.
Best Porsche ever.

3,299cc Flat-6 965 Turbo. In 1993 they released The 3.6L 965 Turbo. In 1994-1997 The 993 series.
Cool. Just bought a 36 year old 928 for those who like Porsche AND front engine. :)

yo my mom's Camry does 0-60 in 4.5
It’s true tho

ok but 5.8 is possible in the V6 models.

I can hit the the Apex at 140.
On my Ps4 in my Moms basement.
The new gen. Lol
Very awesome car,love it 🔥🔥🔥❤️
My favorite 911; TURBO NOW WITH PRICES MY DREAM CAR WHAT A SHAME LOL.
I was literally looking up the specs for the ZR1 for comparison and then it flashed across the screen!
So much more than the sum of its parts.
my god. what a car
In black BadBoys spec is just 😙👌
actually 1999 was the first year of the water cooled porsche

Goodness that car is fast!! I like motor week because they're quarter mile is actually realistic unlike some of these other companies that bullshit.
964 Turbo > ALL
PKmode agree!
Gone are the days when you could open the rear hatch and see/work on the rear engine.
Gorgeous car. I dreamed of getting this as a kid. My current Audi s5 is faster but I’d still rather have this porsche
These Porsche’s are worth so much now thanks to RWB.
aluminum discs?
ProbeGT2 steel brake rotors
damn thing at 2:37 sounds wild
What kind of boost levels ?
3.8 L ?
Crazy how a car like this had worse gas mileage than today's hellcat
