  • Living on a little homestead, we have all kinds of adventures. My least favorite adventure is having to deal with the skunks that love our chicken eggs. Chickens are highly valuable to us and worth protecting.
What is the best way to capture a skunk? We like to use a live trap that has been baited with foods that skunks can't resist. Ideal skunk bait includes eggs, crispy bacon, cat food, chicken or turkey, canned tuna or sardines, peanut butter on bread, marshmallows, or any meat-based, oily foods with a strong odor.
I think a basic necessity on any homestead is a couple of good live traps to capture predators. I've included a couple of links to purchase them on Amazon.
This trap is uniquely designed for skunks:
SKUNK-N-MORE No Spray Live Skunk Trap amzn.to/3hXQtpL
We prefer to have a multi-purpose trap:
Live Animal Cage Trap with Humane Release for Rabbits, Stray Cats, Squirrels, Raccoons, Moles, Gophers, Chickens, Opossums, Skunks, Chipmunks, and Groundhogs amzn.to/339oYoK
You can try these remedies in the event that you get sprayed:

Mold Monster Stink Slayer- All Natural Skunk Odor Remover

With the kind of bait you described there's a good chance you would find me in your trap !

Hi. You should put a large trash bag over the cage to begin with. When the skunk is trapped you simply grab and go. I do this for a living. Great job!!!!

Very timely! We're dealing with a family of racoons leaving droppings near the chicken coop and in the garden. They haven't caused harm yet, just casing out the chickens and the corn etc. but time to set out some traps.

Run, stripey skunk, run! I fear most would just as soon would have handled the intruder with a .22 (or at the least a .177). Thank you for trapping and releasing.

@@TheProvidentPrepper That day I feared has arrived: one of my helpers has some sort of viral something. I persueded her to go to urgent care to get tested, but she left without registering because it was "too crowded" and she didn't want to be "stuck there all night". So I'm trying to decide how to handle this. She seems awfully blase' about it. I need the help but I refuse to risk exposure, since my health is a little fragile. So how am I? Been better, my friend. But with Father's protection and guidance, I'll be fine. Hows by y'all?

@@TheProvidentPrepper Prayers are exactly what I need, so yours is the perfect solution! Thank you. :) I share your unease re the coming months/years. Seems the entire world has gone crazy, doesn't it...? I'm not sure there even is a solution any more, except to care for those we love and teach our kids about the mistakes we made. And hope...and work toward...and pray...for the best. Your family is on my mind (and in my heart) often. Now, where is that glowing fuzzy fruit when we need it, right?

@@TheProvidentPrepper GOOD NEWS! My helper has been hospitalized with a hernia requiring immediate surgery. Okay, so thats not the good news part. But the good news is I don't have to mask and hand wash myself into oblivion! Which of course I still will, but... :D

Well! I think you might have a future in pest removal! I'm glad no one got sprayed!!! You handled that like pros! Predator control is a full time job at our house!!! We are constantly dealing with something , almost daily. I never step out my door without looking out first! More than once I've had a big black bear or other predator sitting on my porch 😤

The Provident Prepper 😂😂😂 I'll take a bear over a skunk every single time!!!! I think your awfully brave for handling that little guy!! (They sure are cute though!) we have a couple lurking around our property right now. We use dog proof foot holds for skunks and raccoon. They work like one of those paper Chinese finger trap toys that we got as kids. They reach in to grasp the bait inside and it holds their hand. If you want to release the animal it doesn't injure them so you can release them. I have used the live traps before...... in my kitchen cupboard! When I had flying squirrels find a way in!!! I got 4 and one night my husband went to put his boots on and one came popping out at him😂😂😂😂😂 I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe!!!! I'm glad to report.... we don't have flying squirrels in this house though!!! I am not a fan of sharing my space with the wildlife!!!

Yup ive had this problem before. We trap it only after it sprayed the house and dog. Lesson learned

Step one - have your kids deal with it. Its a great problem solving lesson........
