      Iyana Tillman Your parents house = their rules. The best way you can convince your parents to allow you to get a pet is to demonstrate that you can be trusted to care for them. Show them signs of maturity - keeping your temper in check, helping at home and talking to them about *their* reasons for not being on board with a pet. Discuss, don’t argue 👍🏻

    i once had a very gentle encounter with a wild skunk who waddled up to me from across the street at dawn. it sniffed my leg, i gently backed off, letting the skunk know i respected their distance, and when they got their fill of my smell, they waddled away in peace.

    Excellent video, I've had three skunks over the years and found them to be great pets if you're willing to put in the time. . One crucial recommendation if you are serious about acquiring a pet skunk and after you've done your research, is get one at 5 or 6 weeks old. At this age they are weaned and taming is not an issue. Also look for a good vet that has experience with skunks BEFORE you buy one. All three of mine were super easy to litter train, affectionate and also a bit mischievous. I had an enclosure about the same size as in the video, but my skunk would be allowed to roam around my home as long as I was there to supervise. They would go nuts if they were to stay n the enclosure all day. Last bit of advice, when young start getting them use to trimming nails and being handled. Great pet but not one to get on a whim. Again, do your research. :)

    My dad had a pet skunk when he was younger and for a while we had a family of them under the cider house (just an old shed where we kept animal feed) and it started off as one but then she had six adorable little babies. No one ever got sprayed and my step mom would leave food out for them. Theyre gone now but while they were here it was nice cuz the amount of hornet nests seemed to go down. The mom had the most beautiful floofy tail and it was so pretty, now i really want a pet skunk when i get older (if i have the right living conditions for them)

    I'll tell you a story ,I was at my friends house in the spring ,I live in Canada so the rules are different when it comes to wild life rules are alot different here ,but we were helping his mom put out spring decor for the back yard and one of the things he put out was a trap and I asked him why he was putting this trap out ,he said because his mother grows vegetables and she didn't want rabbits getting into her garden ,I warned him that other animals might get trap in there besides rabbits 6 weeks pasted and sure enough a skunk got trapped in the cage ,so we called animal control to see if they would remove it for us but they explained that it wasn't there trap so it was up to us to deal with it ,now everyone was scared to approach it because they didn't want to get sprayed ,but I love animals and I can read them fairly well I said ,I want to look into his face to better see the mood he was in and honestly he looked so depressed ,so what I did was I open the trap and wedged a Towel in the door way ,to keep it open and the next day he was gone ,I saved its life and now skunks are one of my favorite animals ,I think they are so adorable the way they move about 😊

      People commonly make the mistake of fearing skunks because they're afraid of getting sprayed... Most don't realize those scent glands are tiny, and while they can get a few sprays out if they deplete the gland it can take days to regenerate it, so they tend to use it sparingly and only under extreme threat/attack. Not that it's not a possibility, but move slowly and don't startle them or make them feel attacked and they are quite unlikely to spray.

    My whole family calls me "the skunk whisperer" bc every ight when I walk my dog I run into at least 1 skunk, they don't run away from me either. They just look at me and continue their search for food. One followed behind me on a sidewalk that was lit! And when I'm alone walking home they are always around me, one came to sniff my leg and I thought one was my neighbors cat and i bent down to pet it and then I realized the big white stripe! That was quite a scare! But I respect them and I think they realize that.

    Me and the wife had a skunk many years ago and it was one of the best pets we ever had. It was clean like a cat and loving like a dog. He would meet us at the door when we got home and then follow us everywhere we went in the house. All he wanted to do is be with us and like one of yours, held, petted and loved. He was excellent. Unfortunately we moved from Kentucky to Hawaii and Hawaii did not allow, no matter how hard I tried even offering to bond the skunk. So gave him to a friend who took care of him. Later as we moved around (I was in the military) found more and more states we restricting such. Now living in WV for nearly 20 years, it is legal but you have to get a permit and WV will not give them out. Very frustrating for our experience with a skunk was nothing but outstanding. I would love to have one again, but getting harder and harder to obtain in most States, may get lucky and WV may start issuing permits again. Hopefully so. One item you didn't touch on, is that skunks will want to go into a semi Hibernation (not true hibernation but slow down greatly) during the winter, so you have to adjust their food intake so that they do not load up on fat and take a long winter slow down with some semi sleep (torpor state) on you. Our's would get a little more grouchy during that time of the year.

Incidentally, congrats on being one of the few people who knows the difference between domestic & domesticated, two entirely different terms used interchangeably by most. Smart cookie! 🍪

    Thank you for this! The part about skunks arent affectionate. We had a stray cat i rescued , when it passed away my wife wanted a new cat. I said no cats. We ended up with 2. Both are attached to me and dont love on her. Then we ended up with a 2 week old kitten the mom abandoned. Again, attached to me and ignores her. She comes home yesterday and shouts "we're getting a baby skunk!".
    I of course said no. Like that matters. She said yes. I asked why, she said she just wants someone to love her LOL. All the cats sleep with me and not her. So now shes trying a 4th time. It seems the reason she wants one, a cuddle buddy, will backfire.
    For years shes been a volunteer at a exotic animal rescue. So she plays with lions, tigers and bears. A ton of other animals, like lygers and kudamundi. As well as skunks and raccoons. I guess someone didnt realize their skunk wasnt fixed. They have 6 babies they dropped off at the rescue. The woman who runs it is trying to find homes. So..... Yeah... Maybe this video will talk her out of it. But i doubt it. Her experience with skunks is already a good one. They have 2 at the rescue already and shes attached to one of them. So I guess we'll see.
    EDIT: Watched a bunch of your videos. Now I want a skunk 😅

    I love skunks. So cute. Got to pet one at an animal education presentation. Then got to meet a skunks at a wildlife center. Skunk couldn't be let back into the wild because of him being injured. For an enrichment activity they wrapped up his food in Christmas wrapping paper.

    I remember years ago I looking up the legality of owning a pet skunk in different states and in one weird state the only way to legally own a skunk WAS to capture a wild one.. it seemed really dumb then too.
    Also -- if your state does allow pet skunks you're not done ..local ordinances may forbid them.

    She’s not kidding about the cutting off their heads. I worked at a vet and this was also true of dogs. If a dog bit someone and was not vaccinated if either had to be quarantined at the owners expense or if they did not want to pay for that, immediately euthanized and the head removed and sent for testing. This was not a nice procedure. I myself had to assist in this several times and it is traumatic to say the least

    • @elainelouve
      @elainelouve 5 років тому +13

      I think they need to test it from the brain?
      I can imagine it would be horrible to need to take part in removing the head.x( Though rabies in itself is really scary. I don't know if it's still basically a death sentence if it's found too late? Or do they have some other medication apart from the vaccine?

    • @ick3212
      @ick3212 5 років тому +9

      @@elainelouve it is a death sentence for pets and animals. they generally die after 5 days of having the infection, so its kinder to the pet or animal to put it down.

    Skunks are great, appreciate the video Em! Do you think you could make more videos on caring for more exotic mammals, maybe like raccoons, coatis, or foxes? You might not support certain animals being owned, but I think it would be super educational for such a popular UA-camr to cover husbandry for animals like this, and it would help curb impulse buys or improper care. :D

    My dad had a friend who had a pet skunk. When the skunk got older it got a little more wild, and bit the owner while being picked up. She dropped it and the skunk actually died from the fall. So, of what I have heard skunks are not drop safe like cats. Definitely something to consider.

    Thank you for making this video! Skunks aren't a well known pet and because a lot of vets aren't used to them they're a much riskier pet to take on. The more informed people are before getting a skunk the better! Even for people who live in places where owning skunks is illegal this is still a great video to watch just so they can learn more about these adorable striped bandits.

    I've been thinking about getting a skunk myself, probably sometime in the next five years IF I end up choosing to get one. So I have 2 questions:

    2) How do they do with cats? Obviously all animals have different personalities but just generally...
