  • Did you happen to see Gates Wildlife on City News this past May? Audra Brown interviewed Brad Gates, Owner of Gates Wildlife Control and caught us in action while we removed 5 baby skunks from under a deck in Richmond Hill.
As you can see in our UA-cam videos, we try to give our followers a “behind the scenes” view into our jobs. On this job, we were able to do that in addition to a behind the scenes look into the news spot on City News. These baby skunks were born under a front deck of a home. The deck had been rebuilt over top of 2 other decks in the past, which meant we had to break past 3 layers of deck boards to access the babies. At the time of this job, we knew City News was prepared to come film us on a job site so we called them immediately.
The story covers our humane removal process, tips for homeowners and cute wildlife babies!

I have a horse sanctuary and usually have skunks living under the hay during the winter. they get very fat because of the cat food that they share with the barn cats. one year we had 5 skunks one almost pure white and obese. she waddled and it wasn't pregnancy. when coming into the barn in the early morning I usually see them and ask them very nicely to go back under the hay so I can give the cats and them some food. love seeing them eat with the cats. and they always quietly crawl under the pallets of hay.
Did have one, one year, thumped but I waited and asked nicely for her to move back under and she finally did. they are so dang cute. always knew when the raccoons were in the area, they always spray then.
This year no skunks. We had a dog (almost a yr old) dumped here and she with her barking, keeps them away. She wants to be friends with everybody including mice. she's a nut. tried to find her a home but nobody wanted her so she's here to stay and got her spayed.

What’s neat to see is when the mom runs along down a trail with her babies nestled up with all of them in contact with her. It’s like a gang of stinkers. I guess the only thing I can assume is that the babies have evolved a behavior that allows them to rely on mom’s scent gland protection.

Heard some noise in my back yard...went out with a flashlight and saw a very well fed skunk in the yard. We looked at each other for a few seconds...I went back in the house and the skunk scurried back under the fence to the neighbor's yard. Next morning I blocked the holes with some cement blocks and haven't seen it again.

Interesting that the procedure to move raccoons to a new den site is the same. How closely are skunks and racoons related? I know they are both mammals but that's all I know.

    • @prillyg

all I know is when the raccoons are in the area, I know by the smell. skunks are not fond of raccoons. opossums they do fine with. I usually have all 3 visiting the sanctuary. I live in the country. This year no skunks living in the barn under the hay, miss that.

That momma Skunk was definitely a lazy mom. She didn't want to build a new den she was just going to use the box as her den. Looked like she grabbed two babies tried to go back to original spot but couldn't get in so she decided that underneath the heat box was a perfectly good warm den. Lol . I didn't see rather she actually moved them or if you had to remove the box and have her come get them again?

Since the skunks were outside the main house, it could have been a wholesome and learning experience to be able to observe them if the owners decided to just let the critters stay until they're strong enough and ready to move on. This must have been very stressful to the mom and baby skunks.

They dig massive holes on your property genius. They also spray unprovoked in their dens and you can smell that shit in your house. Just cause your a sick bastard who enjoys living with pests doesn’t mean other ppl share the same sentiment.

Narrow-minded people like the commenters below only care about themselves and their own comfort. It's endemic of our selfish, self-entitled, self-centered society. Oh no, my lawn has a hole in it! Gosh, what will the neighbors think? Oh how terrible, it smells bad. Let's kill everything that doesn't mesh with our perfectly manicured yard.
YES I have had skunks around my home. YES they have dug some holes. YES they have sprayed. SO WHAT. I have felt nothing but delight at seeing these incredibly adorable creatures who co-exist on my property and in our world at large.
