  • Using a Havahart Trap that Automatically releases the animal - Skunk - Raccoon - Wood Chuck - Hands OFF automatic trap door opener - gives you up to 5 minutes to get to a safe location before the animal is auto-released. Animals often don't want to leave, it's just possibly too comfortable in there!
Skunks are unpredictable and can spray their fatty amino acids a good distance so the ability to release one without stressing it out is a big bonus.
You can get your own Havahart Model 998 Safe Release Trap with a Timed Release Door right here: amzn.to/2FlnCL6
Low stress, I cannot guarantee that your trapped animal will want to leave - it takes patience.
Best Bait for skunks and raccoons in my neck of the woods are marshmallows.

We caught a skunk in our older Hav-A-Heart trap this morning. We were trying to see what was going after the squash in our garden, and we weren't counting on a skunk. My husband waited until the lil guy tired himself out, trying to dig out, before he gently threw an old blanket over the trap and used vice grips to hold open the door. Lil guy was still sleeping and is STILL sleeping, lol. Snacked on a couple of marshmallows we threw towards him, then went back to take a nap. Pretty sure he'll make his way out after consuming so many calories between trying to dig out and eating marshmallows.

Ive had 6 pet skunks over the years, this sub-adult kiddo is use to you, lol, they have excellent eye sight, but only to about 3 feet, then everything beyond thats a blur..... they have excellent hearing and sniffer also, he just wasn't interested in them enough to pounce...
the marshmallow hitchhiker is a treat for later ;)... he isn't stressed at all, lol, pet skunks are playful till the day they pass of old age at around 12-15... ;)
that 'hooded' skunky is sooo cute! (they only spray as a last resort if cornered/ bitten/ startled (& when they get in trouble for getting under the kitchen sink, lol....)
thank you for the 'kind' video any pest trapped should be relocated to a proper habitat and kindly released (not meaning yours) (love the timer on the HAH, if you dont have one like that, simply cover the trap with dark cloth and lift a end open, they see the light and make like a banana and split!!

I had a huge problem a few years ago with moles in my yard. They were eating grubs that were there to eat the roots of the grass. After trying all kind of traps that did not work well at all I was about to give up. I do not use any chemical killers. One morning I noticed many little holes in the grass about two inches around. The grass had been cut in a circle and flipped over. This happened for a few days before I saw a skunk doing his job of eating the grubs The grubs were gone so the moles also moved on. Problem solved and I'm back to a good looking lawn. Thank you Mr. Skunk.

These 2 were also released into a bush area where there's a small stream . We do not want our dogs sprayed again , so we will relocate every one of them . The road in front of our house is very busy and some get killed .They have a better chance in the heavily wooded country ,about 2 miles away .

I always try to keep distance and be respectful even though they eat my veggies, dig holes in my garden and make mess on porch. One night a baby skunk got into my chicken run. I heard my hens scream. We ran out and would you believe that little creature attacked my fav 5yo veteran girl. It was terrible and he wouldnt leave! I sprayed it with a hose. Still it took a while for it to get the point. It finally ran out. Poor girl had to be euthanized. Aaah beautiful but cruel nature.

Excellent video! I used much of your method. Skunk was very quiet, just looking back at me. Some tail raising but no spray. An easy way for me was to take a 3/4x1x10 foot piece of lumber, drive a nail into the side near the end, just enough to hold it. Used the wood/nail to roll the cage over onto its top. Slowly so as not to upset the skunk. The top lever (now on the ground side) should have fallen open to permit the door to open, using the wood/nail to push the swing-down lever back at the bottom (was the top). Easy way is to hold the lever back and use a 2nd piece of wood to push the door back into the cage until the door is about 1/2 way open and wedge it to stay open. Then slip around to the back (where the skunk has moved by now) and poke and talk at him until he walks out, looks back at you like you're an moron, then ambles away. Just be careful not to trip the door and let it close again. State law forbids transporting most wild animals claiming it could spreads disease, which means paying someone $100 or destroy it yourself (Playing Joe Biden speeches works well although that may be considered cruel by some.)

Thanks! Wonderful video, and good to know about the timer. I've used live traps successfully a number of times, but one really awful experience left me afraid of them. I was on a fire lookout in Oregon, and a pack rat kept getting into the storage cabin. I live trapped him several times, each time releasing him at a greater distance, but he kept reappearing. The final time that I trapped him, his tail had obviously gotten caught underneath the plate that closes when the animal's weight is in the right place, and in pulling it out, his tail had been stripped right down to the bone. It still makes me cringe to think of it. The trap was large enough for a big cat. I hope to never need one again.
