The Wilburys were 5 super stars with no ego, no selfishness, just great music
They're all so talented but yet still so humble
@@sarahloughlin3724 asi mismo, y eso hace que sean mas grandes y mejores aún👌👏👏
Was talking to my cousin about this exact sentiment they gave the right lines to the right guy. Just talent jamming
Leave your egos at the door-
This is the result!
No matter how many times I watch this video, that touching tribute to Roy just punches me in the feels. There will never be a supergroup like this one.
Definitely not one with this much star power.
What year was this ?? 1990's I love this song 🎵 💜
Even more bittersweet with George and Tom also gone now.
@@berzerker1100 Think 1988 or 1989?
@@berzerker1100 - 1989, I remember it well. I remember when Handle With Care first hit radio. We didn't have internet, we didn't have rumor mills, nothing that told us of this super group in the works. Suddenly the DJ's are saying "yeah, stop what you're doing and take a listen to this new group." First you're hearing a voice that you would swear is George Harrison. Wait, that IS Roy Orbison, no one sounds like that. That's Tom Petty, is that Bob Dylan singing with him? Jeff Lynne is involved? HOLY SHIT!"
The Wilburys stemmed from George Harrison looking for a B side for one of his singles off Cloud Nine. He and Jeff Lynne had an idea and were going to record it, Roy Orbison was coming along to watch but they had no studio. Bob Dylan lent them his, and Tom Petty joined in when George went to pick his guitar up from Tom's house. The song became Handle With Care and was deemed too good for just a B side and they'd had such a blast doing it they decided to write more songs and release an album, thus the Wilburys were born.
This album helped me through some tough times when it first came out. Still one of my favorites. Thank you for the details about it.
They wanted Del Shannon to join them as well but he killed himself after accepting
Yup, I think I saw that on VH1, the cooler than MTV channel. Anyway great job with the details.
@@Jay-Ben heh.. yeah, I'll date myself. I saw this when the video premiered on MTV. It, Handle With Care, and to be honest, all of Petty's Full Moon Fever album was a breath of fresh air, given that MTV at the time was full of bubble gum pop, rap, and metal at the time. While those were great, one would be rather fake if they were just straight intensity from rap and metal all the time. This was refreshing, and just plain fun, which was why those albums had the impact they did.
And that album is a gem!
2:37 Roy Orbison was so amazing. I read somewhere once that Elvis Presley was asked by a reporter what was it like to have the greatest singing voice ever and he responded, "I don't know. Go ask Roy Orbison."
I love good quotes. Geno Smith QB for Seahawks had a good one. "They wrote me off, I ain't write back tho!" Loved that!
Elvis had a great emotional voice, but didn’t have the range of Roy. Elvis was a baritone who could do some tenor, while Roy could easily go into countertenor.
@@seanjones2456 Score another one for the illiterates of the world 🙄
That quote has been attributed to dozens of musicians, singers and guitarists alike. Don't wanna spoil it for you, but I highly doubt he, or anyone else said that
The Wilbury’s just lifts my spirits knowing that this was 5 guys getting together and having fun🎶
Everything I’ve heard about the 2 weeks they were recording, it very much was 5 friends enjoying themselves. One of those things that you can’t create deliberately.
yeah, it's not that they were trying hard. It's that they didn't need to.
All the talent and no ego.
Watch the true history of the Traveling Willburys on Utube .. awesomeness.
There were 6 legends in yhat group, can't forget Buster Sidebury (Jim Keltner), one of the most sought after session drummers ever
Beth, take a moment and google Jim Keltner discography and scroll on for a while
I believe George Harrisons son Dani Harrison ended up playing with them tol
@@markchapman8253 he did, on the second album, The Traveling Wilburies vol. 3
Great call on that!!
IIRC on the second TW album, Keltner was made a 'full' Wilbury'.
The world a sadder place for losing Roy, George and Tom. But the music can last forever.
your so right....ugh its heartbreaking
Roy died of a massive heart attack the night before the Wilburys were going to film this video. Roy was only 52. Rest in Peace, Roy Orbison,
George Harrison and Tom Petty.
🕯🕯🕯
I love this song, and a great review, thank you. So sad that George Harrison, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison are no longer with us - they are all greatly missed.
Yeah, I just realized watching this video that half the group is gone. Really sad.
Amen brother.
@@Krendall2 my thoughts exactly! I still get shivers hearing Roy, George and Tom.
One word to describe Orbison's voice was 'Angelic'. He always sounded like he was floating on a cloud.
What a super group. Such talent in one room, its insane.
THE supergroup
The Traveling Wilburys are the greatest rock supergroup ever assembled. They made it look easy.
This was my mom's favorite song! She loved the guitar, and the words and George's smile! She died last year at the age of 89, I played this song for her while she lay in her bed at Hospice. She died 5 days later but I know she heard it. "Turn it up" would be her words when hearing this song. Oh how I miss my mom and MISS watching this video with her. RIP Joyce Harner, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and George Harrison.
God bless you and your mother. She definitely had good taste!
I love that Roy Orbison tribute in this video. The rocking chair, his absence is both subdued an obvious. He was legendary when these guys were kids, and they all became legends on their own merits. Quite the ensemble to be sure.
...and the lights flickered...
Always loved Orbison’s voice. Huge range, very operatic sounding, and spine tingling falsetto too
A big reason the Wilburys hits aren't covered too often is it's extremely difficult to find someone who can sing Orbison's parts.
@@Krendall2 KD Lang tried very hard on Crying, her duet with Roy. She’s breathtaking in her own right. Listen to the cowgirls soundtrack.
Raul Malo comes as close as one can to Orbison, but I'm not sure he could go falsetto like Roy.
@@actionsub The George Harrison tribute concert had a guy who could do Orbison perfectly. I forget his name.
@@j_freed She did a wonderful job on that song, and I give Roy full credit for being secure enough to stand back and let her show the world what she could do.
One of the best projects in music history! So sad that three of them are not with us anymore. R.I.P. George, Tom and Roy. ❤❤❤❤❤
Orbison teach angels how to sing.
For those of us that had the luck of growing up with this, we didn’t realize how awesome this was
Nonsense, we did.
Simply one of the greatest collaborative groups of all time. Hands down.
Roy simply was the greatest. His contributions to the Travelling Wilburys was of another world and his final album “Mystery Girl” was an instant classic. “You Got It” put him back to the top.
Too many of these lads are already gone from this world. 😣 I'm so glad they made this music! Thank you, Beth.
seeing Roy's empty chair is gut wrenching
This band was magic and I’m so thankful they existed
This song came on the radio right after I received the news that my stepfather passed away. It gave me a huge sense of peace. Love this song!
The supergroup to end all supergroups. It's still shocking to me that three of them are dead.
Time 😪
It's hard to watch this without tears in my eyes.... I'm sorry I'm old.. Thank you!
Don't be sorry you're old. You STILL have worth. I'm saying this to you and me as well! ✌
Don't be sorry you've gotten old. It beats the alternative.
Maybe because us old blokes grew up with George, and Roy...Tom Petty later on. I'm old too (72) but this music and the music from my youth keep me chugging along. But yeah, this song does get you in the feels.
The amazing thing about this group is the collaborative energy. I mean, they all wrote songs, but they left it to Bob to do the final touchup on all lyrics written and all his edits were accepted on arrival and without argument.
They were having so much fun together! No egos, all talented gentlemen and it will never happen again since three of them are now gone. Talk about a Supergroup!!
And as George said the Wilbury’s couldn’t have been planned, it formed organically.
Music is at its best when it is close and for the sheer fun of it. Too many groups have failed due to getting too big, stardom becoming the goal, which is fleeting for everyone at some point.
I think this is spelled out clearly with Roy Orbison, a star in the fading days of his career (at least in the US), who got a boost on his final (posthumous) album all because Jeff told George that he would be the one person he'd pick to be in a group with. Roy is fantastic and distinct, a voice that engenders sheer awe in the listener.
@@chrismaverick9828 I totally agree with you!
I couldn't get enough of this song when it first came out. Decades later it sounds just as fresh and just as beautiful.
And drummer Jim Keltner ( Buster Sidebury ) . Love these guys.
The Wilburys were a special super group no doubt. RIP to the ones who have passed on. Only Bob and Jeff left. Jeff is one of my favorite musicians ever. Grew up on ELO.
One of my faves, too. Finally glad to see that he's been recognised for his talent & bloody hard work.
Buster Sidebury is still rocking in the free world.
Like those US pro basketball players in the Olympics, modestly called the Dream Team… this is the Dream Team.
Me too
I was 19 and working at Disneyland (1988). My lead asked if anyone wanted to go usher at the Fantasyland Theatre. I volunteered.
The show I got paid to see was Roy Orbison! He played two shows! I did not know the name. After hearing him sing Crying, I was hooked. After work I raced to Tower Records in Brea and bought two Roy CD’s immediately.
One of the best shifts I had working there!!!
George once said that if Lennon was still alive he would have been a Wilbury. Imagine that!!
For sure!
Ughhhh.... Sorry, but Lennon would have dragged Yoko along. That would have ruined everything.
From a time of proper music, written by proper songwriters, sung by artists who could sing and musicians that actually played instruments. I was so lucky to have grown up listening to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Yes, Eric Clapton and so many others whose music is still appreciated 50 years later.
Though also the time of plastic pop from hit song mills. Stock, Aitken, and Waterman come to mind.
@@TorIverWilhelmsen Stock, Aitken, and Waterman were mid/late 80s. The Bands I mentioned are from 10 to 20 years earlier, a long time in music. And nothing wrong with a lot of their music either.
@@malph9216 Ah, I thought you were talking about the time they were playing as the Travelling Wilburys (1988-1991).
@@TorIverWilhelmsen Say what you will about SAW, but Rick Astley never needed Autotune.
There are still amazing singer songwriters who sing and play instruments these days. Sadly, a lot harder to find.
Long live the great Jeff Lynne (ELO), he will be in concert in San Diego on November 12 2023.
The best part for me is Roy Orbison who adds a sFz falsetto bit at the end of the song reminisce of someone on the outside of the train passing by at a high speed. Beautiful.
This entire album was severely underrated in my opinion...I'm so sad that we keep losing their talents, one by one. I write this on 12 Jan when I've just also heard that we've lost Jeff Beck. :(
It's called time. Great artists pass away. It makes room for the next generation.
@@badplay156But with autotune and laptop there will be less who can sing or play. Smh.
Not underrated at all. Won Grammys, sold lots, great critical success.
I didn't appreciate who was in this group when I was young. Now I know all of these people and their individual work. This was an incredibly talented group of people. It's the creme de la creme
Somehow I was fortunate enough to see this video in its original cut, before Roy's death. That version was yanked upon his death, recut with the guitar in the chair in the scenes that had previously shown Roy, and released. A silent and very classy tribute by the surviving Wilburys.
Roy was my first music hero when I was aged 7. Within a year he was no longer with us. This video drove me to tears the first time I witnessed it.
So happy you did the Wilbury's! I'd love to see you get deeper into Jeff Lynne/ELO. It's a deep deep rabbit hole. :)
Agree! Do more ELO, you will not be disappointed! I promise! 😉
Yes.
I undeniably, wholeheartedly, 100% second that remark......maybe... Just kidding! YES! ELO!
@@ELOfanatic If your username and comment doesn't convince her, then nothing will. :)
@@Fatty.D.McButterpants Yeah, you got me there....😁
While I understand your review of this song, and it was the biggest hit from the album, the truth is, there is NOT one bad song on this album. They each get to shine in a different song, both solo, and as a collaborating group. My personal favorite is Tweeter and The Monkey Man, but this whole album deserves a personalized review and bow down to how great it really is!!!!
"End of the Line" and "Heading for the Light" were not only great songs, but kind of foreshadowed Orbison's passing. You have to wonder if mortality was on their minds when they were writing these songs. None of them were "old" at the time, but none of them were young any longer.
I feel for Beth.. she is so sensitive to voice that she can't get away from the immediate strong emotive response when Roy sings
I rolled my eyes when I first heard of this group, "What were they thinking?", but they put out two of my favourite songs. Also I was today years old when I realized Tom was playing the bass in this video.
The great Jim Keltner on drums/percussion. You are one of the few reaction channels who doesn't take anything away from the music when you pause it. Your knowledgeable comments add so much to the experience.
I completely agree, Marcus. Beth's knowledgeable comments add so much to her reviews, and she is always worth watching. Unlike many other so-called reaction videos that are just self-indulgent tosh. Thanks Beth for a great channel.
They recorded the album in a kitchen in Dylan’s house. Their entire first album was great. My favorite song is Roy’s singing on “Not Alone Anymore”
All of the ones we have lost are missed so much. Love Roy's voice.
Thanks Beth. One of God's greatest modern-day miracles, getting these five legends together for a while.
Thank God they decided to do more than just the one song they originally "signed up for." Two albums that are so much fun was the result.
Roy, George, and Tom have all left the stage now. Gone but never forgotten. RIP fellers and thanks for all the great music.
Dylan's on his last legs as well. He doesn't play guitar at his gigs much anymore.
In my culture, death is not the end.
They are still with us, as long as we do not forget them-T'Challa
My ex and my kids say this is the song to be played at my funeral. (I loved this album). Not sure about the implied planning there, but I'm good with it.
Perfect song. I'm thinking of using it too.
I want a Don Rickles album to be played.
Mutual respect and true friendship.. egos left outside..
Supergroups don’t get any better than that. Truly outstanding.
Great reaction video, as always, Beth! And your reaction to Roy Orbison's voice while the chair meant for him was rocking hit me, too. I started tearing up. But hey, he left us with a great legacy. (Same with George Harrison and Tom Petty, who also left us far too soon.) And this song reminds me of my dad...a lot! He passed away over five years ago, and this song reminds me of the life he lived, especially when Roy sang, which was another reason I was tearing up. (Oh, and my dad's birthday happens to be December 18. He would've been turning 69.) So with that being said, I believe the song means this: Remember to live a good life because it will be an example for others, especially your loved ones, when you have passed on.
Cheers, Beth!
Roy, George, and Tom: gone but never forgotten. Bittersweet, indeed.
Jim Keltner's train beat kept it all together! Best collaboration in music history right along with the Highwaymen!
When they did their first song, I was blown away that these awesome musicians got together. Amazing.
The drummer is Jim Keltner a total legend.
Thank you Beth. for bringing that song there's a lot of memories beautiful song beautiful voices en Great musician I sent you a big hug
I remember when that CD was released and Roy's subsequent passing. Dad was a huge Dylan and Beatles fan, so he was so stoked when it came out. The harmonies on the two Wilbury's releases are some of my all time favorites
My favourite song in the world. Thank you so much for listening to it xxx
Bias admission: this is one of my all time favourite songs.
Having said that, I don’t think it’s unfair to say that as good as any supergroup may be in the future, none of them will ever reach this level. Masterpiece!
This song takes me back to a road trip my family took through the piss backwater of Saskatchewan in the late 80s. This song came on the dinky FM radio, and I was mesmerized. I knew who none of these artists were, but I was entranced by the smooth lyrical tones and the folksy blues rock.
The ultimate supergroup...nothing but talent...no ego's...just mates jamming and it shines through....all hugely successful
I wish I could have shared my life with someone who understand how special this song was and who can lit up hearing it.
As a young child in the late 60's and very early 70's, I remember the striking image of Roy Orbison on one of my mom's albums. She loved his music, and thanks to her, so do I. I really got back into it when Black and White Night was released. Sadly, shortly after was when he passed. I had just started college. Now, I'm about to retire! Amazing, where HAS the time gone?
Greatest supergroup ever. Tom Petty was a huge Beatles fan and I'm sure working with George Harrison was one of the highlights of Petty's life.
The story goes, as spoken by Tom Petty, " We all wondered around the house marveling to each other that we were in a band with Roy freaking Orbison"
Bob in a band is the remarkable aspect to me
He’s the ultimate lone wolf
Yet he had to join this crew
@@earthsucks9555 Dylan joined because Roy was there,
@@michaellockhart554 he even wanted the group to be called "roys boys"
I never get tired of listening to them on my cell phone, in the car and on the bike. A wonderful project that when listening to them gives us a lot of joy, great singers who will be forever in the history of music.
The sheer talent involved with this supergroup. And too many of them gone from us now. Brilliant.
Both my grandmothers died 2 weeks apart back in 2009. A few days later I was getting in my car to go to work and this song came on the radio. Really picked me up.
One of, if not the best, super groups to come out.
I always cry when I see the chair where Roy would be. It was a great tribute how they had his picture and guitar there. Love this song!!
Aww, that little reaction to the little memorial for Roy was just so sweet. That's something that's always touched me about this video, too. I am so pleased to have grown up with the Wilburys because my parents loved them, and the individual artists.
Great review. Please don't overlook Jim Keltner. a great session drummer who played on 3 of the Beatles solo efforts as well as various other various artists.
Most people over look Jim but he is up there with the best
I absolutely Love this song and am so sad that so many of them are gone! We will never get the song writing or singing better than this group gave!!! 🤩
I was about 15 when I heard this on a golden oldies station and fell in love with it. Such an iconic collaboration
This is one of those “perfect songs”, well constructed, yet simple. Great harmonies.
If you want to hear the genius of these guys, you want to listen to "Dirty World". There's a point in the song where they all sing "she loves your..." then one of them will sing something that she loves. Then they will all sing "she loves your...", and the next guy will sing something else that she loves. They continue to do that and go around to all of them. According to the "making of the Wilberry's" video, they were all sitting around a coffee table. Dylan threw a bunch of magazines in the middle. They all grabbed a magazine. When they got to the "she loves your..." part, they each had to find something in the magazine that they could put in the song that would work lyrically and was phrased correctly. They were kind of plying a game with it, but the level of musicianship that you need to record that live is ridiculous. They are all musical and lyrical geniuses... it is a shame they played together so few times.
There's a lot of talent in that railroad car.
I always come back to this song. The men's voices are so sweet and beautiful.
Doesn’t get any better than that,
, One of my favorites
I lived this - Having been a fan of Roy Orbison since first hearing his "Only the Lonely" on the radio as a youngster, I was SO glad to see him appreciated and included by fellow musicians. And then...you know. Heartbreak. But consoled by the happiness he experienced in his last couple of years. Jeff Lynne can do a fair Roy impression, but maybe with less of his heart in his voice? Your reaction inspires me to make him and the others my day-long binge today. Thank you!
Roy Orbisons voice can make a grown Man cry , a legend if ever there was one !
The rocking chair with the guitar for Roy was always the most touching part of the video for me
We're all going to the end of the line. I remember when this song came out, epic part of my youth.
What a throwback! Awesome to see you reacting to this classic! 👍
🇨🇦 You are absolutely right. I remember recognising Georges voice instantly in the back seat of my car !
For those who didn’t grow up listening to these brilliant men, too bad.
This is the first time someone mentioned that Roy Orbison had passed away before the video, another great video to react to, is My Back Pages from the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary concert, six legendary singers performing the Bob Dylan song, including Dylan
Ah! Them Travelling Wilburys. They turned themselves into brothers even though none of them have the same surname. And brothers they were. Today, sadly, only two of them survive.
May they will always live on in all our hearts through their music and their videos.
Jim Keltner is still with us!
@@johnmisrahi9922 Well, I suppose we do have to take Jim Keltner in as a member, don't we? Yes, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Jim Keltner are thankfully still around.

Beth, so, so, so glad you adopted the music of this fantasted "super band" The Traveling Wilbury's !!!! superb choice and awesome music built from scratch by 5 best singer, song writers in history..... Well done lassy!!!
Don't know if this has been mentioned already - but the name Wilbury came from when George Harrison was recording "Cloud 9" with Jeff Lynne who was producing. George made a mistake during a recording, and Jeff said "don't worry, we'll bury it in the mix."
'Tweeter and the monkey man' was a soundtrack to my youth thanks to my Dad,this one also but the previous was my fav :)
What a pleasure to see how much you enjoyed this. To see your facial expressions at times you were enjoying it
It’s a great song, the key to it is the harmonics, and the rhythm, which is the underlying theme of the sound track, the individual characters, who go to make the band are as you say, have their unique, but distinctive voices. It has been arranged in such a way as give the members a prominence at different times throughout the track. It works, and works exceeding well. The arrangement was second to none. Overall I would say outstanding, top line! I loved it!
What’s really sad is that 3 members of this wonderful collaboration are no longer with us. George, Tom and Roy Wilbury are sorely missed.
The Supergroup of ALL supergroups! Roy definitely has one of THE most unmistakeable voices of all time - that vibrato, that pitch, the tone - you know it's him!! I can't think of a more perfect tribute to him than this video! The whole Wilbury's project allowed Roy to go out on top, and with good friends to boot. As sad and untimely as his early passing was (and given how much heartbreak he had in his life), I am eternally happy for him that this occurred...for him, and for all of them! Egos completely checked at the door - 5 absolute legends making good rock 'n roll - the whole album is great! If you haven't heard it, check out Roy's piece 'You're Not Alone' from Wilbury's Vol. 1 - his voice is ethereal.
Peace & Merry Christmas!
Heck, "You Got It" is practically a Wilbury song itself, being written by 3 of 'em, and prolly one of his biggest hits.
For me, the Beatles will always be the best musical group ever. That aside, if I were forced to pick a group that might be better, it would be the Traveling Wilburys. Not Queen or BeeGees or Steely Dan or Pink Floyd but these guys. Too bad they only made two albums.
@@jacksonmorganfroghin4815 Well, it did include a Beatle, two people who are known to have inspired the Beatles, and at least one person who called the Beatles a major inspiration, so... 😜
I love your comment about each person having a unique voice, never a boring one. That is a beautiful sentiment.
HI Beth, as well as all the wonderful things you brought to our attention about this beautiful video, I also love the obvious good vibe the band members had with each other. I notice a few occasions where there smiling at each other, because they're just loving the whole experience, all five absolute icons of music. 🙋♂
Roy Orbison was probably the best rock/pop singer of his generation. I believe he also was an established star years before anybody had ever heard of any of the other members of this group.
